Until I found this site I didn’t know that Dracotologists existed. A few years back I found a picture of a semi-evolved Troedon (a dinosaur) in a textbook. It was the only one of it’s kind ever found. Troedons have the largest brains in the dinosaur kingdom, and this one was standing upright like a Neanderthal and I wonder if this could have been some kind of ancestor to these mythical beasts. |

| Comments: | I have to disagree about your theory on firebreathing. Mine is more along the lines of a natural breathing technique. A dragon has two types of lungs, one to pull in air, and one to expel. The intake lung absorbs what it needs, carbon dioxide (like a tree) and expels what it doesn't (oxygen), to the "fire lung". The oxygen can be stored in the lung, and expelled at will. The reason it becomes fire is because a dragon's vocal chords are coated with carbon, or interlaced with it. When the dragon roars, these fibers rub against eachother and create a small spark, which ignites the oxygen, which is then expelled out due to escaping gasses. The dragon's mouth and lungs are all flame-retardant, so of course, the flames don't hurt it.
Also, as to the thought of flying dragons, perhaps they are simply mystical? A better, and more scientifically sound idea is that, like dinosaurs, they aren't lizards, but more related to warm-blooded birds. They have extremely strong, hollow bones. Thus, they don't weigh much, and have a wingspan to compensate the wieght they have. So, essentially, they're hyper-intelligent birds with scales, and a fire lung. Granted, no one's ever seen an animal with such a fire lung, nor has anyone seen one which breathes carbon dioxide, but hey, stranger things have happened. I personally think they're simply an elder race of protectors who have mastered the art of magic, but then, I am big on fantasy, and believe they very well could exist in some form or another. |
