Comments:I just discovered this site today. I was born and brought up in Roslyn Street, just off the Woodstock Road. My surname then was Martin and I lived there until 1972. It was a great place to grow up in the 50's and 60's, but sadly it has changed beyond all recognition now. I hope that through this site I will hear from people who lived in the area the same time as me and also learn a wee bit of the old history of east Belfast.

Comments:I came across this website, by accident.

I was born in Belfast in 1935 - lived on Dunraven Crescent and later moved to Nevis Avenue.

Then in 1952 my mother and sisters came to Toronto where we still reside.

We had a wonderful childhood, even though times were hard, during the war, but everybody was in the same boat, but we were happy, as we had good parents. My father died in Belfast in 1947 and is buried in Dundonald. My mother died in Toronto in 1985.

I attended Elmgrove School; left there as we were evacuated Derrygarve, Castledawson - those school days were not happy days as one teacher was VERY cruel to me - as well as to all the children from Belfast.

When I returned from the country, I then attended Strandtown School - those memories were much happier.

If anyone reading this wishes to say "hello" it would be nice to hear from you.

Take care!

Comments:I found this reference to Norwood Tower which may be of interest:-

Commander Oscar Henderson (1891-1969)

James and Martha's third child was named Oscar, and he was born
on the 7th October 1891. Oscar was educated at Bradfield,
Osborn, and the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth. He married
Alicia Mary Henry on the 4th August 1921.

Commander Oscar Henderson served in a destroyer during World War
1 and he was second in command of H.M.S Iris at the famous
Battle of Zeebrugge, on the 23rd April 1918,when a British force
Blocked the Mole by sinking a ship across the entrance. Oscar
took command when the Captain was killed and was awarded a D.S.O
for his part in this epic. Oscar became Comptroller and Private

9

Secretary to the Duke of Abercorn, the first Governor of
Northern Ireland. He was awarded a C.V.O and a C.B.E for his
services.

During the 1800's the Hendersons lived at Norwood Tower Co.
Down, a fine castellated residence in its own grounds.

It was assumed that this house or it's Dower House, Clonaver,
would pass to Oscar when Florence Elizabeth, his aunt, died but
she decided to leave both together with a majority holding in
Belfast News Letter shares to the Musgrave side of the family.
It was a bitter blow to Oscar and his family. They could do
nothing about the houses but they did succeed in buying back the
News Letter shares.

Comments:I am presently involved in researching the history of East Belfast/Dundonald. I have been given the period 1960/1965 to investigate and I would imagine this was of particular significance to the development of Dundonald and the housing estates. Can anyone provide information regarding this period in general, the early days in Ballybeen or Tullycarnet estates or the movement from the inner cities to the estates?
Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Comments:Just came across this fantastic site. I used to live at 121 Church Street East just off of the Newtownards Road, in the 1960’s. My maiden name is Jeanette Cameron; the memories this site created brought a happy tear or two. Like meeting my dad at the Iron Steps I believe on Fraser Street on Friday nights when he was coming home from H&W. Going to the Templemore Avenue swimming baths with my chums (later on going to the Templemore Avenue Bar). Long summer days and evenings playing rounders with friends on the street, and watching the big boy’s playing cards on the corners. Eating bread and butter/jam sandwiches (where did that little girl go) I hung around with Jean Lyttle (Church Street East) and Wilma McIntyre. My father’s name is Frank Cameron used to live on Saunders Street, and my mother was the late Margaret Cameron nee Thompson from Church Street East. I Attended Mersey St Elementary School then Ashfield Girls. I left Belfast in 1975, went to London, Emigrated to Canada, Transferred to USA, Houston Texas now living in Chicago Illinois. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me.
Thinking of you all in Belfast:

Comments:I'm just back from a week in Belfast, researching my father's history - his name was William John Coates, and was born at 153, Newtownards Rd, in 1895. His father was a grocer there, his name was George Coates, and his wife Margaret Ellen Coates. Later, about 1905, the family moved to Earlswood Villa, Kincora Avenue.

There were at least three other daughters: Maggie, Mary Ellen, and Annie, and another boy, George (jnr)living at the Newtownards Rd address census return in 1901. It's likely there were other, older children who had left home - I'd love to trace any other Coates relatives who may still be in Belfast, and to know whether there are any links to the Victor Coates Foundry family.

The Lower Ravenhill has changed, with changes in housing and estates.

I used to remember in the 50's, my big adventure, walking to Fraser Street Bridge to meet my father coming out of the Shipyard at 4.30 on a Friday - payday and walking home with him up Bryson St, along Beechfield and Madrid St, past the Tramway Station at Mountpottinger and the Picture house (was it called the Picturedrome) and across the Albertbridge Road and along Mount Street to home at My Lady's Road holding his hand and skipping along telling him my adventures of the day, those were the days.
