Fixing the medicare prescription drug benefit coverage gap in 10 years appears a joke.

Comments:I wrote this immediately after Doreen notified me of my dear friend's last journey on March 18, 2005:

Our Don Quixote who battled so many windmills is gone forever. These are difficult times for most, but Herman would have kept on fighting. Throughout his life, he fought the establishment and spoke for the common man and the oppressed, underprivileged, and disenfranchised.

We have lost our General. The troops are too few, but valiently we fight on, each in our own way. You taught us how, Herman.

In sadness and tears,

susie

Comments:For the last 14 years I lived with Doreen and Herman, and while he and I had different ideas about many things and locked horns often, I know for a fact that Herman loved Doreen. He made mistakes as a father, but many of those I believe were made out of ignorance of how to raise a daughter without a woman's influence.

But last year when Doreen came too close to dying, I saw the sincere gratitude in his eyes when he thanked me for insisting that she let me take her to the hospital and being there daily to take care of her. I think with all the loss he had suffered, it may have killed him to lose her too.

He had good days and bad, but he frequently went out of his way to do some little thing to be nice. Even though he griped heartily about us and our belongings being underfoot, I think he secretly was glad for the company.

A few times I even caught him petting and talking to one of our cats. She seemed to think he was worth giving a chance ... you just had to look beyond the tarnished surface.

I owe Herman thanks for taking me into his home, and for adopting Doreen and taking care of her so that she and I could become friends when we grew up.

Now he can "cuss and discuss" politics with all the great thinkers of the past.

Comments:I have known Herman for over 20 years and he always fought for truth and justice and was there for the underdog of society. It's a very rare person these days that could even meet his humanism and caring for fellow human beings. We had long talks about politics, baseball and humerous topics. I will miss him very much.

Comments:TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO, MY WIFE, SUPATRA, AND I BEFRIENDED HERMAN. I WAS AN IDEALISTIC POLITICAL SCIENCE STUDENT. HERMAN WAS A MODERN-DAY DON QUIXOTE, TILTING AT EVERY INSINCERE WINDBAG POLITICIAN AND UNJUST CIVIL SERVANT TOO SLOW TO DODGE THE SHARP POINT OF HERMAN’S QUICK, ACERBIC WIT.

HERMAN’S INSIGHT WAS OFTEN FAR AHEAD OF MOST EVERYONE, AS WHEN HE DECLARED TO A FRENCH TELEVISION REPORTER, AT A DEMONSTRATION IN STUDIO CITY, THAT BUSH WAS LYING ABOUT THE JUSTIFICATION FOR THE CURRENT WAR IN IRAQ. THAT INTERVIEW WAS MONTHS BEFORE EVEN GEORGE BUSH DISCOVERED HE WAS LYING.

HERMAN WAS A GREAT AMERICAN CITIZEN AND A GOOD FRIEND TO ME AND SUPATRA. WE WILL MISS HIM. THE ABSENCE OF HERMAN’S OUTRAGE AT INJUSTICE WILL BE MISSED BY US ALL.

Comments:dearest herman - i didn't think i'd cry when you left us, boy, did i, haven't stopped yet. there are some people that you assume will always be there, no matter how old they get, you were one of those people. i never knew how big of an impact you had on my life, it was huge. you were a very complex man who did so many things in your lifetime. it was always amazing when someone would find out. i had the honor and priviledge to have known you for the past 30 years of my life. i will miss you very much and sure hope and pray that you get the peace, rest and respect you deserve now. but then again, i am really hoping there's all kinds of rallies everyweek up there for you to attend and give them hell, because that would really make you happy. god bless you, herman, and thank you for loving the little boy, who as an infant, the moment you saw him, you called "the boss", he really loved you. to him, you showed your kindness. he didn't know you as the famous activist, he knew you as doreen's daddy, and that was all he needed for him to adore you as he did. "goodnight sweet prince .. and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest", only you and sam get this one from me, so far. peace and love to you herman, forgive me for not coming sooner to see you before you left our physical world, that guilt will remain with me a very long time.
