The fact that you have been gone for 18 years now is inconceivable. I still remember the last time I saw you, sitting in your kitchen, wearing your blue suit. It seems like only months ago. I'LL NEVER FORGET THAT NIGHT. I MISS AND LOVE YOU SAMMY! I wish we could go for another spin on the bumper cars at the pier or run into each other on Ventura Blvd. Like back in the day. THE GOOD, OLD DAYS. Nothing's the same since you've been gone.

Comments:Here's a side to Sam that most folks have forgotten. Sam and Annie became my friends less than one minute after we were introduced on the slopes of Mt. St. Helens where I was directing one of my American Yeti Expeditions. We had scientists and trackers of all sorts among of teams and the Melvilles fit in with them all in a heartbeat. They had come at the behest of their close, close friend, Eliza Moorman-Wright (see the film Eliza's Horoscope) who was one of our very best field researchers. Sam was with us when a huge forest fire closed us down. He appears in our final scene with Eliza and me. Miss him? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah! The Native Americans have a special term that applies to Sam, to Annie, and to Eliza. They are all True Human Beings. And I am all the better for knowing folks like those three exist. Being Buddhist, I know Sam is not that far away even as I write.

Comments:What a great site! A wonderful tribute to a wonderful actor. I loved Sam as Mike Danko on The Rookies, he was my favorite and Kate and him made a great couple on the show. I was so happy to see him play her ex on Scarecrow and Mrs. King. He was so handsome. I was very saddened by his untimely death and he is very much missed. I really hope The Rookies comes to DVD. I have a lot of the episodes with Kate and Sam that I've bought over the years on VHS. What a great loss but he'll always be remembered with many happy memories. It was a real treat to find your site... Keep up the good work and God Bless!

Comments:Dear Mrs. Melville, I was truly shocked to hear about Sam's death in 1989. I always wondered what happened to him when the Rookies went off the air. I started watching the show when I was seven years old. I had a good friend who lived next door and she also loved the Rookies! We would walk to school the next day and talk about the episode the night before! We even wrote the show one time and asked to be on an episode with Sam! How crazy kids are! My friend just died this August of 2004 at the age of 39. She had a massive brain hemorage. I was thinking of her tonight and it made me think of the Rookies and I looked the show up on the internet and found out about Sam. As other people have stated, I didn't even know him and feel like I have known him all my life. Thank you for sharing him with his many fans! Thank you for letting me go down memory lane! God Bless you and family. Patty Hartman Worcester, Massachusetts

Comments:Dear Mrs. Melville, I wrote in Mr. Melville's guestbook a few years ago. I really only knew of him through watching The Rookies. I still can't believe that he is gone. I very much enjoyed watching the show and wish it would be aired againor at least start seasons of it on DVD. The original cast made quite a team. They had the right chemistry. Mrs. Melville what happened to the badge Mr. Melville wore during the series? It would be nice to view on his home page.

Comments:The first TV hero I had was Mike Danko from the Rookies. I never missed an episode. It has been just recently that I discovered the magic of the internet and connections to The Rookies and other Rookies Fans. I somehow missed announcements that Sam had passed away, I was busy being a nurse, in part from the admiration I had for Jill Danko. I do wish that there would be a reunion movie someday so that we can put some closure to the relationships we with our friends in the 70's. Here's to you Sam--you had a positive impact on many of us! Love, Bridget

Comments:Doreen, With over 100s of channels on satelite, I ran into an old program that reminded me of the Rookies. I did a search and was saddened to learn Sam had passed. I am 35 and my Dad and I would watch this show together when I was a young kid. It's amazing as I was four to seven when the show was on. Everything is larger than life at that age. I saw Sam's information and made the connection instantly with the Melville and Mulvill. I looked through your site and it took me back. My parents divorced when I was in first grade but I can always remember my Dad and I watching our favorite show, the "Rookies." Emergency 51 and the Rookies, those were our two favorite shows. I was going through the phase of wanting to be a cop or fireman like all five and six year olds. My Dad always guessed the endings and I thought he was so smart. Now, I teach my kids how to figure out the plot. My Dad did not teach me, he wanted me to think he was smart and not question him. Ha ha! I watch some of these old shows and it amazes me. I get to see people driving a car that gets 12 mpg, eating at diners, sitting at desks with no computers, driving down streets with no Mc Donalds or Starbucks..... Thanks for taking the time to give people a place to visit the past. I am sure Sam is looking down on you with a smile for allowing his memory to live on. I search on actors occasionally. I was watching Dog Day Afternoon with Al Pacino. I remembered his partner and thought what ever happened to that guy. I did a seach and sure enough he passed away back in the 70s. I saw a program on Aaron Spelling as well and wondered what happened to Sam. It's funny how you see something and it triggers a memory of the Rookies. I always loved Kate Jackson and remember seeing Sam as Mr. King as well.

Comments:Dear Mrs. Melville I grew up watching the Rookies. Here I was in the 7th grade thinking, Im going to grow up to marry Sam Melville. Here I am with a 15 year old daughter who asked me about the kind of shows that I watched as a kid. I explained the Rookies and then we looked it up on the internet. I guess becuase I ws in the military in 89 I wasn't up to following actors and their lives,. But today my heart felt such a lose for a person that in reality I never met. So here I am with 5 chldren married to a NYC cop and somehow the irony of it all makes me smile. Anne, it's great to love someone as you have after all these years he is gone but your memory of him and his love has never left you. Such a love is so hard to find. I wish you well always....a endless great memories for a lifetime. Love Liz

Comments:March 10, 2004...I just wanted to write a quick e-mail to let you know how much I enjoyed growing up watching "The Rookies." I am 35 years old and it (along with Adam-12) are the first police shows I watched as a young child; my parents always told me it was my favorite, and that's exactly how I remember it. It was the first of many police shows I grew to love (followed by SWAT, Charlie's Angels, Starsky & Hutch, Emergency, and so on to Third Watch today). At the age of 18 I began working for a local police department, worked my way through the state level, and am now a proud federal law enforcement employee. Actors sometimes hold a great deal of power, the power of influence. Those early police dramas I watched as a child -- especially "The Rookies" -- truly inspired me, and Sam Melville's character was a significant part of that. Thank you!

Comments:Hi there, I've been a loyal fan of "THE ROOKIES" & that of the late MR. MELVILLE. Currently, I've been knocking myself about trying to put onto paper the script for ROOKIES tv reunion movie. Now in the movie JILL DANKO becomes widowed when MIKE is shot by former FBI agent CARL HANRATTY on orders from ALEXIS COLBY of "DYNASTY" (another one of AARON SPELLING'S masterpieces) because MIKE uncovered a plot in which ALEXIS (as played by JOAN COLLINS) to bribe various members of L.A.'S D.A.'S office, including JOHN MORETTI. So when HANRATTY pulls the trigger he also shoots LT.RYKER in the process. Then the DANKOS son MIKE, JR. goes on a vengence path against ALEXIS and her oil company called COLBYCO. It's therefore up to TERRY WEBSTER & WILLIE GILLIS to save the day before police officers of the CALIFORNIA state-run law enforcement agency called SCAT (SPECIAL CRIMES ACTION TEAM) tries to send him to the grave as well. So with the help of STARSKY & HUTCH, S.W.A.T., & SCAT's enemy B./J. (BILLIE JOE) McKAY they save the day while T.J. HOOKER manages to sneak into the main COLBYCO office building in DENVER and beat up on ALEXIS' son ADAM CARRINGTON just for kicks!? Finally, realizing his future as a private detective will just have to wait when he decides to save until after he retires from S.C.P.D. & becomes part of the new generation of police officers & properly honoring his father's memory. Further details on the stories to follow at a later date in time (possibly in fanfiction, maybe)!? Thank you very much & I shall return!

Comments: I began watching the Rookies when I was a young kid. While other kids wanted to be Johnny Bench or Hank Aaron or "Mean Joe Green", I wanted to be Mike Danko. I loved his character. The character was the nicest man I had ever "met" on television, and I am glad to read that a lot of the character was based on Sam himself. He must have been a great man to those who knew and loved him and feel the loss on a daily basis, but know this: visiting this website just made me realize how important Sam and his fellow cast members were in my life. The writing on The Rookies left no doubt in a young boy's mind that these police officers were of the highest integrity and their honor was beyond reproach. To this day...many, many years later, I live by that same impression, and I am now a Lieutenant with a major metro Atanta police department. One never knows how far their influence reaches. Thank you for putting this site together for your friend. It brought back some GREAT memories of playing "The Rookies"....

Comments:I love all things Mike Danko/Sam Melville. I just found out yesterday of Sam's passing and have been sort of in shock ever since. Mike and Jill were my favorite characters and favorite couple. Sam and Kate Jackson had excellent chemistry. Thank you for helping me relive Mr. and Mrs. Danko's wonderful marriage and love story. It was all about them for me on The Rookies. What an awesome site! Your fellow Sam Melville lover, Tammy

I understand that The Rookies is no longer on TV Land as of today (Labor Day) and I really am going to miss it. I'm glad I taped a bunch of them, but not all of them. I was very sad to learn of Sam's death. This is a great tribute to him and one I will visit often. Thanks for the memories!

I went into the hospital when I was little and my mom tells me that I asked the nurse if Mrs. Danko was working :). I was so happy to see that TVLand was showing the series, and so I did a search on imdb.com to see what had happened to the stars of the show. I was very sad to see that Sam had passed away, and so young too. Thank you for creating such a wonderful place for us to cherish Sam's memory!

I became so hooked with the show, my friend in grade school Samuel Ashby and I used to play the Rookies in school and pretend to be the characters on the show, lol. If I'm not mistaken, Sam also made a guest appearence on "Gunsmoke", as well. He be truly missed. I also thought that the theme of "the Rookies" by Elmer Bernstein was great too. Thank God for Tv Land. Now I'm able to see one of my all time favorite cop shows that I haven't seen in over 20 years ! Thanks Sam for the great television memories and God bless you and your family. Comments:I was absolutely in shock when I read Mr. Melville had passed away. I remember watching "The Rookies" as a kid . it made me feel closer to my father who was the local Chief of Police. For the passed several years I have been a police officer and still like the show and thought a lot of Mr. Melville. HE, Mr. Brown, Mr. Ontkean, Ms. Jackson and the man who played Lt. Riker, really made the show. I recently made a contact and started purchasing "The Rookies" episodes. I felt the television people should get together and make a reunion episode and maybe get the show started again. That is when I recently read about Mr. Melville.

Comments:Well Sammy ... Bear ... : ) First off, it astounds me how many people come here and see this great site that Doreen built for you with all her love! It was like (I think it was) today, 10 years ago that David, Doreen and I went up and hung out at Pismo Beach and the Oceano Sand Dunes .... visited the Halcyon Store .... Santa Maria .... all the time still mourning the loss of you .... when low and behold we found out (mostly by my nausea!!) that our Sam was on the way. There was NEVER a doubt that he would be named for you, in my religion you name after the dead so they are never forgotten (not that you ever would or could have been) but so that the good traits of that person be a part of your child. Sam is wonderful. You'd love him. He still dreams of you. I believe him 'cuz if anyone's gonna come to him in a dream it's you!! He has scored in the top 3% of the NATION in his schools recent testing .... you'd be proud ... yeah .. you probably helped ..since he does a lot of that famous daydreaming ... he's handsome too, with wonderful eyes, not blue like you, but special like yours. I miss you ... went up with David to the house and hung out in the kitchen (yeah where else!!) with Anne ... she was in your chair ... I can still feel you, wish you were here with us and miss you as if it were yesterday. Thanks, Dad .... We love you .... bunches and bunches .... Hope (aka ....Romaine .... he he he) p.s. Wasn't Chris 'N Pitts fun?? : ) (Huh, Doreen??!!)

Comments:Hello and thank you for the site. Nice work. I was digging through an envelope of old photographs which was the only thing my mother left me when she died over two decades ago. I came across a personalized-autographed B/W 1970's photo of Mr. Sam Melville and for some reason couldn't remember who he was. After looking through your website I now vaguely remember the show (I was quite young) and can now put a face to a name of a photograph that I have carried with me for years. THANK YOU! I am not sure how or where my mother crossed paths with Mr. Melville but it could have been when she was "friends" with actor Mr. Jim Backus since I have a photo of my Mom with Mr. Backus in Vegas in 1973 in the same envelope. Hmmm. Part of the mystery solved! Thanks again and my sympathy goes out to Mr. Melville's family. I know how difficult it is to deal with loss but it must help knowing how loved he was.

Comments:The Rookies was one of my favorite shows when I was growing up (I'm 33 now) and when it was in was in re-runs on local TV (when I was old enough to appreciate what a great show it was,) and while I never got to be Sam when my friends and I would play the Rookies (I was stuck being the guy who had the chalk line drawn around his body) and being a love- stuck 7-9 year old my favorite character was always Kate Jackson, I'm saddened to hear of his playing away. Comments:I loved The Rookies, it was one of (if not THE) finest police drama ever aired on TV. Sam's character was definitely my favorite, but I thought the entire cast was wonderful ... it's so sad that Sam is gone and there's no hope of a reunion show, but your excellent website was a great way to revisit those fond memories. Keep up the wonderful work you're doing for all us old 70s TV fans, I for one, am very happy to have found this site, I bet lots of other people feel the same way. God Bless, Tim Tyrell

Comments:Doreen: The site is looking great. Keep up the good work. I love the Rookies. It was my favorite show as a child and still is to this day. Always will be. My favorites are Mike and Jill. Sure wish it would be shown on TV again or released to video. Hopefully someday soon it will. I currently have 46 episodes of the series and am looking for more. Any fellow Rookies fans with information on how to obtain more episodes would be greatly appreciated. Always willing to trade.

Comments:I remember watching "The Rookies" when I was a little girl- and we all loved Sam Melville- then seeing him when I was in college, playing Kate Jackson's ex- husband- we all thought it was neat that he played that role- considering they played marrieds on "The Rookies." I really enjoyed this webpage, and am so sorry for your loss... I had not realized he had passed away. Know that he gave many people pleasure watching his acting. Sincerely, Suzanne

Comments:Doreen and other fellow Rookies fans: Received an e-mail from another fellow Rookies fans who talked to someone at Columbia House Home Video who told her that if they get enough requests for The Rookies on home video, that they will try to buy the rights to the series. Columbia's phone number is 1-800-457-0866. Maybe if we bombard these people, they'll buy the rights. After all, I was looking at Sam Goody/Suncoast Videos and could not believe the series that are already out on video. Just thought I would put this out here for anyone who checks the site. Keep up the great work on the site. Cindy Wylie

Comments:I am so glad to finally found a site about Sam Melville and the cast of one of my old favorate tv shows. I found this site by accident. I am really amazed at all the information you have. I did not know that Mr. Melville was dead. I am so sorry. I was reallly hoping for The Rookies cast to reunite for a reunion show. The Rookies was my favorite tv show when I was younger. I tried not to miss it. I have not seen it on any channel listing for years. I wish one of the channels would air it, and I also wish that it would come out on video. I would love to have the episodes so I could watch them again. I especially liked the ones with Mike and Jill. Thank you again for putting this site together.

Comments:The Rookies has been one of my favorite shows since I was just a little kid.In fact I have the Fall Preview issue of TV Guide introducing this show for the new season in 1972,it has a really nice picture and description of the show.I also have a 1975 TV Guide with The rookies on the cover, the picture on that cover looks like it was done in watercolor and the article in the back was done on Gerald S. O'loughlin.I have 11 episodes on video and certainly wish I had more of them but to my knowledge it is not yet out on video.I'm glad I ran into this web page it's super nice.

Comments:As a child, I'd sit on my Grandfathers lap and watch the Rookies. I did not know the actors by name. I grew up. My Grandfather passed on. I became a man with a family of my own. On Christmas 1999, I had the chance to happen upon the Sam Melville site. Although the news of Sam not being with us anymore was sad, it was rewarding to see an old "familiar face" for which I did not know the name. Thank you for the site and for allowing me to "go back and sit on my Grandfathers lap once again." The best Christmas gift I received this year. Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

Comments:Well Eenie, (Doreen!) Great job on your updates! I am sitting here with tears running down my face, wishing, oh so much, that Sam was still here with us. As I look at the pictures and listen to his voice, I feel how much his loss has effected me, and I know it has effected so many other people that he knew and loved. He was there for me from the time I was 11 until that awful day, March 9th, 1989. For 18 years I was blessed with having Sam in my life, and am thankful to still have his beloved wife Anne as a loving friend. With Sam, I laughed a lot, cried a lot, loved a lot, but most of all, LEARNED a lot. I know he'd love this site! Thanks for making this site, where I can go to smile :) and cry! Most of all, thank you for being such a wonderful friend. I love you.

Comments:Dear Doreen, Thank you for doing such a wonderful job with Sam's page. This was obviously a labor of love & I thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing this for Sam. To all of you who have read these pages and expressed such kind thoughts, I thank you on his behalf. It makes me feel so good to know he is remembered with such warmth by people who didn't even know him personally. He was a unique man...a man of honor, love and great humor. I think I miss his laughter more than anything else. Thank you all for still caring. Anne Melville

I was a big fan of the Rookies and will always think of Sam as Bear from the movie Big Wednesday. I remember the last time I saw him on TV was when he was interviewed during the fires in the canyons near Los Angeles where he lived. He was a fine actor and gentleman. He will be missed.

Comments:I was just surfing around and stumbled onto this marvelous site! As a kid, I absolutely LOVED "THE ROOKIES", and made sure I was firmly planted in front of the tv set every Monday night at 8. Sam was just incredible. Strong. Handsome. And he had that wonderfully reedy voice. I wanted to grow up to be just like him. I was very saddened to hear that he had passed away at such a young age. BTW, you should also note that Sam appeared in the 1968 film THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR. It's a small role, but the movie's great. If anyone out there has the ROOKIES episode where Jill and Mike lose their unborn baby, please e-mail me. I'd love a copy. I've got one episode with original commercials, and I've got Sam and Kate's appearance on the final episode of PASSWORD from June 1975. Keep up the great work!

I know he's looking down on all this with that rascalish big grin thinking.. hey yeah that's real cool...thanks! You know that! The 10 year anniversary is coming upon us all too fast, it seems like yesterday.... oh how time flies. You did a wonderful thing for a wonderful person. You should put a picture of you and my Sammy on the page to show that he has a cutie named for him! Love you both for your time and effort and most of all LOVE. Hope

Comments:Hey, great site you have here--my friend Mark Lungo clued me in to this site and I just had to check it out!! Yeah, Sam was great in The Rookies--I grew up watching him on TV, so when he passed a few years ago it was truly a loss. Some other shows that Sam has appeared on include The Big Valley (episode "Teacher of Outlaws"), Hawaii Five-O (three episodes: "Tiger By the Tail", "Most Likely to Murder", and "For a Million--Why Not?"), That Girl, and Cimarron Strip. I have submitted credits on a number of TV actors for the Actors Television Credits reference books by James Robert Parish and Vincent Terrace (including those of Georg Stanford Brown and Sam's friend Marc Singer) and truly believe that Sam's credits belong in that book!! I'll probably write to Jim Parish sooner or later and try to sell him on this!
