I first met Si several years ago when he came to Judson Memorial Church and the Left Forum in New York City. I'm currently a Ph.D. student at Union Institute & University in Cincinnati, OH. One of my professors mentioned the book "How People Get Power." She thought the book was out of print, so I referred her to this site. I've also put the book on my list of books to buy.

I have been a fan of yours since back in the late 70's when I bought your album Home and learned how to play the wonderful song "Seeds of Children". I used to play with a folk/bluegrass band and we would play that song. My old album has long since worn out so I was wondering if there are any plans to re-release any of the older albums on cd or by download in itunes. I would love to listen to you singing that song again.

I am hoping your retirement does not mean you will not be active in the 2012 Presidential race because I foresee this being perhaps America's last opportunity to take our country back from Corporate Fascism. The two monopoly parties are sure to nominate again corporatist candidates who will never represent the people's interests. Will you join a coalition of Libertarian Republicans and Progressives, call it TeaProgs or whatever, and challenge Romney and Obama for President? Ron Paul for Pres/Russ Feingold for VP. Let's take back our country by forcing the withdrawl from all 3 wars in the Mideast, and reform Medicare, Soc Security, the Tax Code, and Campaign Finance. Let's do this to express our love of country and love of God.

Just saw Silver Spoon in Cambridge this week. I really enjoyed it, and loved the songs. Terrific work - very creative. How does one get the "soundtrack" for such a thing? Will it become available? I especially liked People Like Us, and I Never Thought I'd Fall in Love. Thanks for all your hard work and for portraying the meeting of two people from different backgrounds.

Dear Si,
Geoff Bartley from the Cantab here... you'll know me right off... ponytail... soul patch... a hunted look... ha! I'm very much looking forward to meeting you and am excited about our MonMay23 show! You've been in the Cantab, so you know the layout. Sound equipment will all be mine and songwriter PJ Shapiro will take care w/ your stage and room mixes. There will be enuff mic setups to accommodate three or four additional players if you invite. Kari has run the schedule by you and me, but here it is again.
8:15 to 8:45 I play
9:00 to 10:15 you play
10:30 cake
10:45 open mic starts... this is still a Mystery Area, but My Plan is to ask 4 or 5 open mic regulars to play two songs each. You and yours are invited to participate... event will go right up to 12:45 closing... do what's right for you. The road is tough even if you have nice hotels and good food. From Kari, I'll plan on saying good night to you a little before 11:00.
Again, I'm really looking forward to meeting you and am pleased to be doing this event w/ professionals like you and Kari.

I'm listening to your CD "Courage," but not the copy you handed me at JFREJ's Marshall Meyer Risk-Taker Awards--I'm hearing it on Oscar Brand's "Folksong Festival." He just played "Washington Square." Yesterday I went to the rally/commemoration of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, right outside the building where it happened. At the awards, I told you you'd made me cry when you sang "The Lady of the Harbor," & you answered that you *helped* me cry. Well, as I listened to "Washington Square" the day after the 100th anniversary of the fire, you just helped me cry again.

I also want to mention that I had a look at your autobiography page on this site & was surprised to see that we went to the same high school! Good ol' BCC.

Small world story...I have enjoyed your songs for years, but learned only today that you were a fellow alum of B-CC in Bethesda, MD (from B-CC page in Wikipedia) . That led me to your Wikipedia page, where I see that you are the son of Rabbi Ben Kahn, who I had the honor to lead High Holiday services with at Ohr Kodesh in Chevy Chase back in the 1970s (he was the Rabbi, I was the cantor). I also sang in a choir during college in Boston with your cousin, Jackie Kahn. I knew that Rabbi Kahn was his uncle, but somehow never made the connection to you. it's good to close the loop 30+ years later, thanks to the Internet.

Si... have loved your music ever since John McCutcheon introduced us to it in Cordova, Alaska, during the Exxon Valdez. You are one of my all-time favorite song writers. We need someone of your caliber to write a song about the Pebble Mine threat to Bristol Bay. It would be the largest open pit mine in the world, and it threatens the biggest wild salmon run in the world. If you are interested, we can probably find funding for flying you up here and educating you about the whole thing. September is the best month. Please let me know if you are interested. Keep on pickin'!

We were classmates in both elementary school (I believe) and high school (before your family moved out of PA). I just wanted to tell you how wonderful it is to see all you've accomplished (particularly in the Southern Rights Movement) and with your music. I was working at PSU Libraries several yrs. ago and must have come across a book you wrote. I e-mailed you, I believe. Anyway, I remember what a bright and friendly boy you always were. I am SO PROUD of you!!! Are you coming to our reunion next yr. (2011)?
I'd be honored to be able to visit w/you, if so.

I would love to order one of your song books for my daughter. She is taking piano lessons again as an adult and really enjoying playing.

What does retirement mean for a songwriter and rabble rouser anyway?

I hope to goodness that you'll at least continue to write - I'm not sure how you could stop. Just know that your music has been important to me as a means of clarifying or expressing how I feel about those who would misunderstand and abuse power. I love the by-line for your last book - "...Quiet Lovers of Justice" - and quiet does not mean unspoken! Thank you for your work, and thank you for your supportive response to a couple of my emails as I adapted one of your songs and when I shared a song of mine. Your work, and you, are a treasure.

As soon as your most recent book is available online expect a plentiful order via the internet.

I met Si at the very first Stan Roger's folk festival. My son was a very young 15 year old fiddler whos bluegrass band had the fortune to be chosen to perform with greats like Si Khan. My son Chris Leslie was impressed by the relaxed and open presence of Si towards the crowds and other musicians. This changed Chris' attitude towards his admirers and allowed him to continue to enjoy his music. fYI Chris has gone on to become a 2 time Eastern Canadian Bluegrass fiddler of the year, released 7 country CD's with his band Country Generations, written many songs and toured as far away as Australia. He has never looked at music as a job but as a enjoyment. I thank you for being an unknowing influence in a young man who had the chance to go in so many wrong directions. Chris is 29 now and living in Edmonton Alberta Canada, still writing and playing. Especially enjoyed your childrens cassette, the glass of water song still rings in my head
Thanks again

We are playing on Sept 21st at the Charlotte Folk Society's "Music In The Park". If you're in town, stop by and play one with us. We would be honored. Thanks again for all your great music.

It was an honor and privilege playing and singing with you last week at the Carter Family Fold. I have been a die-hard fan since I first heard your music in the late 70's. Your songs mean more to me than you will ever know. Keep up the good work and know that there are many of us who draw strength from your music every day.

Happy birthday, Si. I turned 61 a month ago, so I am a little ahead of you. When I was a folk show host in State College, I played Luray Women and Aragon Mill over WPSU-FM. I wish you a pleasant and productive next decade followed by many more.

I was strumming away at my guitar just now and a half-forgotten song drifted into my mind: Andy Irvine's version of your 'Aragon Mill'. A powerful song. I checked up on the email and there was the website of a person after my own heart: union songs, civil rights songs, songs of hope and peace and justice. I also liked listening to your song, 'When the war was done' and will get hold of some of your music.
I'll be at a big union rally in Melbourne tomorrow, called in protest against the repressive anti-union laws of our awful government.
Wish us luck because we need it!

Definitely like the sound. Even though they're differenet genres, i kind of think of that nyc band hunting bigfoot. there's a paul rowan - johnny rolfe thing going there. if you think i'm crazy then go to http://www.huntingbigfoot.com then tell me otherwise.

I'm looking forward to hearing more.

We miss you. It's been 9 long years since your last appearance at the Vancouver Folk Fest. Thrilled to see your book "How Privatization Threatens Democracy". I left Brooklyn NY in 75. Now it saddens & frightens me to see Canada heading down the same ideological road as the US

Thanks Man!

Si,
It's people like you who keep on working for civil rights, worker's rights and singing about them who give me hope that perhaps justice can be done.
I lived in North Carolina for fifteen years, and I understand Aragon Mills are closing all over the state as the greedy ship the jobs to China where they can underpay desperate people and in some cases work them to death.
Your music gives me hope.

As far as the guy who thinks socialism is slavery, he doesn't know history. It's Feudal Lords that are the older version of corporate boards who owned everything and the commoners work for them as slaves or indentured servants if their own businesses failed. Private orporations should not dominate because we have no control of what they and we don't elect them or impeach them.

Government should not be dominent either because as in the past kings and princes and dictators issued decrees and executive orders claiming they are representatives of God. The result was people suffered.

Our constitution with written rights, checks and balances and voting rights, representives of the people are there to regulate those that govern and government regulates private industry so no one is abused in theory. It not perfect, but a more informed electorate should help keep power between private and public from going too far inot a wealthy feudal lord or corporate fascistic rule or too far to a government dictatorship.

Hello Si,
I grew up in Scott County Va and spent a lot of time with the Carter Family. I played with you one night in Gate City in a little beer joint about 25 years ago. I played claw-hammer banjo and still do but mostly fiddle. I have lived here in Charlotte for 18 years and just recently was told you live here. Love your music.

Hi Si! I had the pleasure of hearing you at the Pit at Merlefest last weekend. There are a lot of performers I like, but most are enjoyable at a surface level. There are very few that can make me laugh and cry. In fact, at the moment I can think of only two, Fred Eaglesmith and you. You bring humanity, something we need more of. Best wishes!

I got the new 'we're still here'album a couple of weeks ago. It hasn't left my CD-player yet and it won't for some time. Si has made one of his most sincere and outspoken albums of the last couple of years. Indeed, in these troubled times we need people like Si to shake up our thoughts - people who actually force to examine our own thoughts about the issues we are forced to face these days. Don't be suprised if you won't find any wishy-washy songs on this album... Superb production! I was there at the recording session (which was great also), but the quality of the finished product totally took me by suprise! Great job!
