As a follow-up to my current book "Hell Hawks!" about a P-47 Thunderbolt fighter group in Europe, I'm working on a book about the American bombing campaign over Europe. The February 26, 1945 mission of special importance to me. If you can help, contact me or, better yet, ring me on the phone.

Comments:Please let me introduce myself. I am secretary of the Dutch foundation called WO2GO.
The recently established foundation WO2GO (Dutch abbreviation for The Second World War on Goeree-Overflakkee) has the isle Goeree-Overflakkee in the southwest of the Netherlands as its target area. We aim to collect, restore and display local historical objects from the years 1940-1945 and register and re-tell the memories of the people who suffered during these dark days. We try to solve question that still exit on many events e.g. lost airmen and aircraft. We will give information, offer help on special occasions, erect monuments to honour those who lost their lives in the fight for our freedom, we will advice , give lectures and publish documents. To reach the youth we present much of our information digital by means of our website www.wo2go.nl. In doing so we try to keep to preserve the heritage of WW2 on our isle.

At this moment we are doing research on the crash of the B-17 s/n 43-38103. The plane went down on april 5th 1945 on our ilse, nearby the village where I live.
I saw on your website that your father's crew used this aircraft. On the fatal day it was under command of 1st Lt C.W. Bates.

We were hoping that you might have some additional information or photos of this plane from your fathers archive. And if so, are you willing to share them with us and may we use them in the article on our website, on our calender (on which we try to make artists impressions of 12 events in the air during WW2. I’m doing the watercolour paintings myself). And also in the book we plan to write in 2009.

Best wishes from Holland,
Kees stoutjesdijk

Comments:Hello,

I have been researching my uncle who flew with the 8th army air force during the war. As it turns out, he was a tailgunner on a B-17 in the 850th. Even more interresting, he actually was the tailgunner on one of the planes you father was on (Serial #43-38701) after your father was on it. His plane was shot down on April 19th over Aussig on the same mission your father was on. I would love to know any information your father has about it, or especially any recolection about the mission over Aussig, one of the last mission he probably flew. I have much more information, please email me if you would like to share anything! Thanks

Comments:I wish I had found your website before. My mother has just died, she would have loved to see the photos of Eye as she lived across the road from the airfield, thats where I was born in 1946. My Mother and father knew the aircrews as they used to go drinking in the local pubs together and my older brother and sister were given sweets etc by the crews. I have been clearing out my mothers house and I came across an cigarette lighter with the name Theodore Jr Hicks, inscribed on it. I remember my mother telling me years ago that it was given to her by someone on the 'drome' (or droom with a Suffolk accent), where she sometimes worked. The planes taking off from the runway used to take off our chimney pots !! Is there anyone out there who was at Eye? Best wishes Christine. FkuQI

Lace has been deceased for several years. As we began to corroborate factual information concerning Mr. Lace's spoken history, in the absence of photographs and other documentation, we discovered that he did not reach a rank above First Lieutenant, and he was not a pilot, but a bombardier, perhaps replacement bombardier, serving under Pilot Larry Moore.A further check of Mr. Lace's flight log indicates that missions and dates (dates on which no such mission took place) do not match the extant historical records. We have not further interest in Mr. Lace's history. We would, however, welcome any information from surviving crew members whose names are: David E. Currie, Charles D. Keeling, Doyle S. Adams, George J. Harageones, James H. barkley, Mauritz N. Nelson, and William C. Todd.

The B-17s flew so high there'd be freezing temperatures inside the cabin. The German flak was so thick during bombing runs, that he thought you could step out of the cockpit and walk on it. There was a curfew and lights out on the ground, so they put a blanket across the door, to keep in the light. My father said they were pretty rambunctious on the base. One airman whose cot had been soiled by a British cat grabbed the animal by the tail and flung it thru the blanket and out the door. I am proud of my Dad, who defeated Hitler.

I am trying to find out as much as I can about my Uncle, Newton B. Parker. He was a tail gunner in a B-17 with the 490th Bombardment Group. He was shot down over Prague on the 157th mission on April 19th, 1945. He survived the war but was not able to tell us much about it because he would suffer terrible nightmares afterwards. He is now deceased I am searching for any info about him or his group that I can. The Pilot of his plane was 1st Lt. Robert A. Norvell. I do not know if he is alive or not. If you happen to know anything about this I would greatly appreciate it. All I know about his last mission is that they were to bomb the marshalling yard at Aussig and that 6 or 8 Me 262's came out of the clouds and shot down 4 B-17's before they knew what hit them. My Uncle bailed out and survived the war.

Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you.

I have the same photo of the flight crew in my hand as I write this. That picture and others were all part of a WWII Aerial Warfare 8th grade class report I did back in 1968.

I'll be interested to hear what my dad has to say as he views your site. He never really talked about those days much. But I will could send you a story he wrote on March 23rd, 1945 detailing one particular mission when the plane was badly crippled by gunfire. But, as the story proudly concludes, "My crew has now been officially credited with shooting down a German jet. We are the first and only crew to ever shoot down a ME 262 in my Squadron Group and entire wing."

Another note: I, too, visited the DuPage Airport that weekend in 1995 to see a real, operational B-17. I shot quite a bit of footage of the exterior and interior and sent it to dad. Who knew your dad was there as well?

Thanks for your web site. Kudos.

He left a detailed diary of his transit from Hunter Field in GA to Stone, England, each one of his missions; target, altitude, duration, type & bomb load etc. I am currently attempting to ID his crew, aircraft & transcribing what he wrote into MS Word. I am also interested in flying in a B-17 (I'm a private pilot) to get a better feel for his narrative.....He describes in vivid detail an attack,(4-19-45 S. of Dresden), by 5 or more ME-262's that pass within 75 yards of his A/C, & wreak havoc among the group. (I think he shot one down) He was a very modest individual, (I think all of them were) He became a highly decorated member of the NYC Police Department's Emergency Services Division after WW II
