Comments:Thank you so much for all your wonderful advice. You have spent a great deal of time in preparing this website and the info is great for those of us who never hunted elk.

The elk hunting trip that I am planning is quite special, too. It will be with my son after he returns from Iraq. We've not done anything like this before and I am excited by the prospect of being able to do this very "American" thing with my son. While I've done some bird hunting over the recent few years, I haven't hunted anything like elk. It was 40 years ago that I hunted whitetail in Pennsylvania as a boy with my father. Your advice will help make my experience with my son so much better.

We are planing a trip to Idaho in October 09. None of us have been hunting abroad before so it will be a challenge. Hunting in Denmark - Sweden - Poland - Scotland - and in South Africa has been tested, so now we are ready to try the Rocky Mountains. We still need a lot of information about how your tag system and other practical stuff works but there`s time to find out.
Hope you all have had a great season. Thank`s for all the great tips etc. Keep it up. :-)
Hunter greetings from Denmark.

Your tips and information will help us out lots. I must say that i read that you didn't care too much for diaphram calls but i'll tell you what, I think if you want to imitate the bull you can sound like more elk if you use a combination of both a hand held call and a mouth call. I recomend the primos mouth call because of that little sonic dome, keep trying, i know i swallowed mine a few times tryin. Any recomendation for early season bow?

Comments:Well, here I am, 62 years old, retired after 30 years in the Army, and am undertaking my first elk hunt in Arizona. I drew a cow tag, and hope to get my first elk. Having killed many whitetails, I am fully aware of just how different elk are. I'm trying to educate myself about habits, hunting, field dressing and skinning which are similar to deer, but on a much larger scale. I'll have to let you know how things turn out. Thanks, Pappy

Comments:This is a great sight...wish I had found it sooner. I've been on 3 sucessful hunts, 2 in Co. and 1 in NM. The hunts in Co. were a little deceving due to the territory. The highest elevation was about 7500 ft and all was easy to get to with a 4 wheeler. (Not complaining) Then reality struck with a trip to New Mexico, elevation started out at 7200 ft and got nuthing but higher. I'm from Mississippi and our elevation is about 150 to 200 ft. just a little difference. I've always thought of myself in shape but in most of the cases, having this thought, I could breathe freely. I really did not know how much I took oxygen for granted. The hike was only about 1 mile (I struggled) then the kill (that was easy) then the field dressing and quartering...(difficult due to no trees around to help tie off legs) thats kind of a funny story in itself. Then the packing out(almost ruined my entire hunt) I was lookin to hire someone, anyone with a mule, strong back, a bad child. That was the hardest I've ever work physically in my entire life. and at 40yrs old it aged me 10 yrs that single day. So now I have taken a year off to get in shape for my next hunt...I was told by a local, the week before I come back I should, to duct tape a drinking straw in my mouth and put a laundry pin on my nose...this should get me used to the lack of oxygen. So, If youre in mississippi and see someone with a staw and a laundry pin hanging off there face...just say hello. Its probably me Robert.

Comments:Thanks for the great site. I as a boy hunted with my father and brother for deer in eastern Montana. We live in Minnesota, and I remember the trips out west to hunt. I am now 35 and have always wanted to Elk Hunt, and generally just get back into hunting. This past year my sister and brother in law moved back to Montana where he was from. This year I am going on my 1st elk hunt, and I have been to your site often. I have used it to look up just about all basic infomraiton I could find to included helping determine my gun choice. I was pretty sure I wanted a 7mm Magnum, but wanted to make sure I had a gun that was very versitle. Once I started shooting it, I fell in love with it. I purchased in Montana this past July a Rugger M77 Hawkeye 7MM Magnum. I have been shooting the Remington 150 grain express core lockt bullets, and have them grouped under 1" at 100 yards. this weekend I now plan to move out to 200 and 300 yards to see how my rifle actually responds as far as rise / drop with this particular grain bullet. I did of course read your article about sighting in, and understand I should be about 4" high at 200 yards, and zeroed at 300 yards. I have set a limit to not shoot farther than 300 yards this year, but next year if the conditions arrise may push that out a little further. I have 12 years experence in the Army where my career began as an infantry men, so I have pushed plenty of rounds out at 300 yards. Now, the biggest thing I can do is put as many rounds down range prior to our trip to get as used to the rifle as possible, illiminating all jerk I can from the trigger squeeze. I feel very confindent I will be able to group at 300 yards within 8" to 12". Most of my shooting at ranges of this far have been in the prone position, so if I have to use sticks, I will bring that in to shoot no more than 250 yards.

Any general advice you can give to someone going on there very first Elk hunt? It will be the 1st week on November in the Dillion Montana area.

thanks!

Mike

We are planning to hunt in Colorado just below Hayden, Co. in GMU 13. We are not sure if we need to have written permission from land owners in that unit, still looking. Wyoming sure looks like God's country but our funds aren't the richest but we both have dreamed of this for years! Anyway thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience!!! I live in Oregon and have been hunting elk since 12 years of age, like you say elk evolve as we do when it comes to hunting and we have to stay on our toes. I have made a lot of mistakes on many bulls that cost me opportunities to put down some trophy's, but i've learned after the years and have been pretty successful. A couple of weeks from now i'll be out in the brush trying to get one in range. Bill you have some useful info on here that can save a novice elk hunter a lot of heart ache. Good luck to you this season, Kenny

Comments:Planing an elk hunt in Montana for 09 due to the draw , this is a first for me and I found your sight very informative. I plan to hunt with a jap 7.7 = to 30-06 but hadn't thought about taking a back-up till I read your hunt gear list, better take the 8mm mouser for back-up. Thanks a lot, hope I can gleam enough advise between now and the hunt to make it a sucsesfull one. Better get into shape too, live in Georgia but was raised in S. Dak. so can deal with the weather. Is a 175 gr. bullet from these guns good to 300 yds. for elk?

Comments:Nice page. Made some real pleasant memories come back. I lived in Wyoming for 16 years, Green River & Big Piney. I retired from the Post Office (Postmaster)in Piney in 2000. As I was looking at your pictures I could almost see myself there. Lots of good info on your site. You guys visiting this site, pay attention to what this man has to say about elk hunting!!!

Comments:Thanks for all the info on the web site. I moved to Oregon about 2 1/2 years ago and plan to start hunting here. I'm orignaly from Upper Michigan and love to white tail hunt. A friend from work (who's new to hunting) and I put in for Spring Bear tags. We plan to hunt the Starkey Unit in the Blue Mnts. Your site will be refered to him so that he can learn some of the in's and out's of hunting. He knows that I am a serious hunter and he should be able to learn a lot from your site. In the spring we will go and recon our area to learn the lay of the land. We will also do some elk hunting and I know that if I can get a lot of input from your site, that he surely will.
I look forward to a successfull year of hunting and will refer to your site in the future. Thank you.

I will be hunting once again next season .I had a double lung transplant July 2006 and am looking forward to many days of steelhead fishing and elk hunting. I will be spending much time getting into condition hiking and pre season scouting. I will enjoy those four seasons once again. I will be living in NE Oregon in Wallowa . Yippe I am a lucky guy!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Take care of the earth and it will take care of you!

Comments:I really appreciate you taking the time to help out the novice.
I grew up in a great hunting area in Oregon on the east side and never hunted a day in my life. Now still living in the Northwest and on the west side of Washington I still have this opportunity. I have recently bought a 30.06 Tikka T-3 with a Leupold LR 3-9 Scope. The shop bore-sited the scope and My good friend has assisted me in getting it sited in at 100yards. (Got a wiffleball at 100yds 2x's in a row) feeling pretty good about this start. I was glad to run across your website with info that I could understand. I really appreciate it! Thanks...

The terain ain't the same here in tennessee, but they are going to have a elk draw as early as 08'. Can't wait I've already bought everything that I think I might need. I AM PUMPED!! thanks for all your help.

Comments:I've read though all of your articles on elk hunting, and found it very interesting. I wish I could find more articles on the net on other animals like moose, black bear etc like this one. I have never hunted elk yet but am thinking about going for either elk or moose in 2007, I have not hunted moose yet either. I'm from Manitoba Canada and we do have both. Personally I can't afford a guided hunt here or anywhere else for that matter, so I will be hunting with my partner(hunting partner). Anyway, your article helped me think alot more about our scouting plans and some of the obstacles we may encounter.
Cudos to you and your article, I'll send feedback and pictures of our scouting/hunting if infact we go.
thank you. Carlos Winnipeg M.B.

Comments:I've only read through the info on your write up on the different calibers. The info was pretty helpful as I'm in the market for my second big game rifle. I've got a .30-30 Winchester saddle rife with a lever action, but I wanted to get something that would be a bit more powerful and something practical for mounting a scope. I've curious to know the differences between a .30-06 and a 7mm. You're input gave me a good base knowledge to start making my choices. I'm anxious to read the rest of your sight, hoping to go Elk hunting some day. Until then I'll have to settle for the challenges of California deer hunting.

Best regards, merry Christmas, and happy hunting,

Danny - Bakersfield, CA
