| Comments: | i was just searching the net, about info about scratching, and doing harm to your own body. and came across this. while i was reading this i felt the same way. i'm not good at expressing my emotions, i'm the type of person, who to other people looks happy and go lucky. who always looks on the brighter things in life, but to me, its just a front. of course i like being happy around people, but i'm afraid to show any other emotions around them. i never get mad, disappointed yes, but angry no. and i never cry, the odd time yes, but never infront of anyone, i tend to take it out on my body, to me its a stress reliever. but i never used any razors or needles. i just scracth, till i break skin, and then let it heal. i sort of liek the feeling of it, and the sensation of reopening wounds. i have gotten quite a few tattoos, i like tattoos, but i mostly got them for i love the sensation of getting them. i mostly scratch my legs, which are really bad. but the last 3 years, i have moved to my stomach. which now looks really bad. and i know this, but i can't help but do it, for i love it. i've been doing physical harm to myself for 20+years now (27 now) and i doupt that i will ever stop. i have always day dreamed, of getting kidnapped and tortured, but for it to happen in real life i wouldn't want that, (accept if i had a lover and it was a mutual thing). i have always wantted a broken arm or leg, but too scared to actually do it to myself to that extent, and the last 5 years, when i've been driving with someone the thought of getting into a car accident have always crossed my mind. i was when i was younger sexually assaulted by my sister more then once, but now when i look back, it feels more like a dream then reality. i sometimes wonder if that was the cause of me doing harm to myself, or actually allowing myself to be close to anyone. but i must say after reading this, and seeing how close this story resembles my feelings, i feel at ease that there is at least one person, along the same lines as me. if i hear back via email from this, i will be in shock but happy, that someone actually read this. but i have to go. so see ya!! |

| Comments: | My best friend used to cut herself.Thankfully, I got her to stop, and she hasn't done it in about 8 months. Now, I feel like a total hypocrite becaus I'm bulimic. It's like "how can i tell her not to cut herself when I'm hurting myself, too?" I love her very much, though. I'm so happy she stopped. Sometomes ,though, I get really nervous because there's always a chance she could start doing it again. Oh yeah, sorry for rambling. I have done some research and taking her tools away isnt going to make her stop it will just piss her off and she will use something else. I first sent her to a psych hospital because her and her sister were fighting all the time and I think she really learned about self injury there from some of the other girls. At first I blamed the hospital, but then realized she wouldnt do it if she didnt feel the need to do it. If you have any suggestions for me I would be greatful. |

| Comments: | I think how you have handled the whole situation is amazing. I am a self harmerand have been since i was 14, i'm now 17. I understand completely what it feels like, wanting to stop but not wanting the sudden rush of calm and release of tension to stop. Does that make sense? People need to learn that self harmers don't want attention, why do they think we try to hide it. Nobody knows that i cut myself and i don't think i'd be able to face telling people. I will one day. I need to find another way of coping with my feelings, but until i find a way to do that, cutting myself will be the only thing that will keep me going. |

im glad there are sites out there. tonight i have felt very depressed and have been reading many accounts of self harm. generally they have just made me feel worse and indulged my desire to cut, but on the good side they have definately made me feel more normal and more comfortable. i have never ever talked to anybody in detail about what i do or what i use or where. i have physcologists and physcotherapists and i havent even told them. i dont let them see my arm and i dont talk about it. these accounts however have just made me feel that its not so bad. the people i have read have bared their souls to the whole world on a web page, which i find very brave. i really have been helped by doing this tonight. i have always known that "im not the only one". but i didnt know i was the only sane one! i suppose i have had very close-minded views of other self injurers. thanks for opening my eyes rose xxxx |

I just wanted to say, that it's nice to know there's someone out there whose scars are not an accident. I'm 22, and I first cut myself on my 20 birthday. It was my left forearm. I was just really depressed and at the moment of doing that I was just crying and didn't know what was going on. Then after 2 week I did it again. My scars are almost gone after 2 years. I didn't want to do it again to avoid people asking what was wrong with my arms. But I did it again... and they keep asking. I'm from central-eastern Europe, here things are much different than in US. I always say: "no, are you kidding me? I'm normal, I'm not some kind of paranoid"... but hell... it's not that easy... Take care!!! |

I'm not totally your classic stereotype, I haven't been raped, or abused in any way, I've suffered no real traumas. I'm a young woman, and I used to have real problems at school, that's when I started self harming. On the worst occasion (I was fourteen) I was in an ambulance and needed seven stitches. The only problem is my relationship with my husband suffers because of my self harm. |

(I use kitchen knives). I read a stat...0.75% of the pop.SI's. I guess that's higher than I thought....as NO ONE I HAVE EVER MET SI's. Stereotypically, I am not what you think of when you think of mentally or emotionally unstable...although I am somewhat depressed (scrap the emotionally unstable I guess). GT and academically driven, maintain my appearance and cleanliness i.e. I've gotten to the stage were I've ALMOST broken bones. I don't use fire however. |

I am a cutter like your self. Both of my upper arms are scared and I am working on my rib cages. I find that its harder to cut my rib cages. I know its a lot more sensitive, but its almost psychological. I know what you mean by wanting to get at least one good cut. It just doesn't seem worth it other wise. and I have not been diagnosed as depressed (have not gone to a doctor), but I KNOW that I am. It started with finger nail cuts and progressed to kitchen knifes with ragged edges.
