Comments:I'm glad I found this place! My Mormon heritage goes back to 1870. I was a Mormon for 42 years in Iowa and my husband was a member for 32 years. We raised 4 kids in it. The one good thing that happened by being members was that we mainly researched our family histories and published and sold at our cost to relatives, 12 family history books with over 12,000 names. What happened to me was that in 1989 I had a vision of the Cross (which Mormons think is the murder weapon of Jesus Christ-you are not allowed to wear cross jewelry or have a cross in your home). It was in broad daylight and I just fell to my knees and cried and there was such a feeling of intense love for Jesus. Then in the Chicago Temple a month or two later I experienced the devil when someone started babbling in a strange voice "my new name, Elizabeth," over and over and I was so scared that I got dressed and ran out to our car and then I had a dream several months later where a man who appeared to be Jesus told me that "I came for the whole world; not just a "select" group of people." And then I wrote my resignation letter in 1993 and got out within a month. Two of our four children are still very active in it and I go with them now and then when they ask me to. My husband left his name of the books but he told the church people that he never believed in the Joseph Smith fairy tales but he wanted to go to church with our children and he liked the family history helps but that was it. We have 11 out of 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren very active in it still. We pray for our family that is inside this very controlling and RICH "cult"-like church everyday. If Jesus could come into my heart and save me out of Mormonism when I was so embroiled and caught up in it then He can save you, too, and also our family. God bless you each and every one!

Comments:I am being indoctrinated by elders from the LDS. It seems to have taken a life of its own. But I am not convinced about so many things, Like Jesus appearing before the American Indians or something like that. I just do not believe that. I have never heard of anything in their history that testifies to that. Ineed all the information I can get before I commit to anything that rigid. And it seems as if the elders are like robots (for lack of a better word). So thank you for your information

Comments:Ok I just read some of the things that people and wrote in your guestbook, mainly what Mormon's wrote. They sit there and say all of these nasty things about you and the information that you have but dosen't it say in their own teachings "Do not judge and ye shall not be judged!!!" Read your own books people!!! I was baptised into the church and my father and step mother are Mormon. Boy Oh boy I'm I glad I got out of there! My dad is currently a bishop. Not all mormon people are bad, true, but i dated a half black man once and my very own father told me I was going to burn in hell for all of eternity! Yeah great church that gets fathers to tell their daughters they're going to burn in hell. Me personaly don't belong to any church. I am a FREE thinker! Thank any god for that. So for all of you people that are saying all these nasty things about James David why don't you practice what the hell you preach, you know kindness! Oh and James I absolutely love your site. I am currently trying to get my name removed from the church records but for some strange reason they keep sending me back all of my letters! So to all you mormons reading this....Why can't I remove my names in peace with out having twenty million missionary's show up at my house telling me if I don't change and come back to the church I'm, yet again, Going to Hell! I acctually might like it there if you say James David is going to I would love an eternity of talking about the truth! Have a nice day all.

Comments:Hi my name is Jessi and I love your article about the facsimiles being altered! I've done a little research on them myself and when I found your site and read what you had it just spurred my will to research it even more. I laughed a few hundred time at the translations Joseph Smith did. My favorite one was for facsimile #2 for figure #11. He said "Ought not to be revealed at the present time. If the world can find out these numbers, so let it be. Amen." NUMBERS!!! Yeah he sure knew how to translate the texts! I don't know a whole lot about Egyptian Hieroglyphs but I know enough to know that those aren't numbers! Oh and Egyptians would not have made the mistake of the heads floating in air. The were very detailed in their drawings. I have looked at fac.#2 many times and I never noticed it before. Have you looked at the drawing of the woman on the right side of the cow? Egyptians always, well at least from what I've seen, drew people in the profile view. You can't even see her face, that is if its a woman. Any ways I love finding people that actually research thing on their own, instead of being a sheep and going with the crowd. E-mail me back sometime. I would love to hear more of your thoughts on things.

Comments:I was recently approached by two, very sweet, Mormon missionaries. I decided to meet with them and hear what they had to say about their beliefs. I am a strong Believer in the Christian faith, and I wanted to see how the Mormons beliefs met mine. I did some research and I have been finding so many contradictions to the Bible. None of the other prophets of the Old Testament ever spoke in contradiction to what God had laid out before them. I have found that the prophecies, however much some have taken from the Bible, contradict the very foundation of which they claim they love. I don't think I would ever want to follow a set of beliefs from someone who made up stories about a people that never existed and set forth doctrines that I could not question. This new acquistion of knowledge has left me astounded that such a religion could exist and prosper, and affirmed that I believe the truth.

Thank you for time you have put into your research. I believe that it shall bring the truth to the light.

Comments:Being I was raised by a mother who was fanatical, I can say, I am EXTREMELY intimately familiar with the teachings of the Mormon Church. Years and years of Sunday school, Sacrament meetings, Primary, then onto MIA. I have been baptized for the dead over 100 times, sealed to my parents in the temple, received at age 16 my blessing from a “Patriarch” and so on and so forth. Early on and for as long as I can remember, I never felt that strong conviction about this church everyone else seemed to have. I had many questions which needed to be answered because simple logic and these teachings were on a collision course. There were feelings deep inside of my soul which just kept telling me....something is very wrong with what I am hearing from these people. My feelings and questions were never answered. At no time was I able to engage any church official in a dialog where I could openly express these doubts or feelings through an open and frank question and answer period. All I ever received were readings from the Book of Mormon, Bible, or other church docterine. I was told these doubts were Satan trying to deceive me and lead me astray. And least I not forget the all too familiar, “you must not ask questions but live on faith then fast and pray for the answers." This was ALWAYS followed by having to listen to the testimony of the Church official telling me he knows for a fact this is the one true church......yadee yadee yadee.

Here lies the contradiction…..one learns from asking questions. Did not Joseph Smith through prayer ask the question which is the right church? And yet, this is the same church which discourages questions...it is ALL on faith. Asking questions or doubt can have you excommunicated.

So for many years I fasted and prayed but the answer was always the same: Leave this church as my own spirituality was being stifled. And at age 18 I cut off my affiliation with the Mormon Church. However, this church wasn’t about to leave me in peace. I felt like a fugitive from the legal system. And of course I received the threats of eternal damnation, no room for me in the Penthouse Suite, etc., etc., etc. And so I finally decided enough was enough and removed my name from the Church records.

HOWEVER, even with all of the questions and doubts I had and the failure of this church to have a sit down talk with me....the ONE major factor which embittered me most with the Mormon Church was how they looked upon the people of African heritage. The leaders during their talks or through written words openly spoke bigotry, spewing words of hatred towards these people. These words I found very uncomfortable, disconcerting and downright disgusting.

Would Jesus have said these words? And if one thinks about it logically...considering the geological area he was born...he had to be pretty dark himself...NOT the illision of him created by the European artists. He wasn't European!!

However, now comes the fun part. Science is now unraveling the science of DNA. Through years of research, it now seems that some 6 billion people inhabiting Planet Earth today can be linked back, through their DNA, to the Namibian Bushmen of Africa. In other words....we all descended from these Bushmen in Africa.....EVEN these Mormons spewing this bigotry It seems 50,000 years ago, even their ancestors WERE BLACK!!!! Oh boy!!!!

PBS’s “Journey of Man” hosted by Dr. Spencer Wells tell the story of the human species beginning approximately 50,000 years ago.

But of course, as always, the Mormon Church will have some sort of response in an attempt to discredit it.....always do!

But in the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson: “The religion that is afraid of science dishonors God and commits suicide.”

I left the Mormon church in 1986, when I was 26 years old. Even now, at 44, I find it painful and difficult to realize that I was duped. I am the only one of six children in an LDS family who has left the churct, and even to this day my siblings and parents believe that I have been
"so decieved." If only they could open their eyes and ears and see and hear the truth (and the lies propogated within the Mormon faith). But, I fear, that is too threatenting to their world view. If they allowed themselves to question, the whole house of cards would come tumbling down. Still, it is sometimes lonely being the sole "apostate."

As another of your commentors stated, in a christian church, if I sinned they would love me and help me, not throw me out the door. I can not get my mind around this concept.

I can't remember the exact verse, but there is a verse in the Bible that states that any doctrine added to or removed from the bible is false...how can that be refutiated (sp?)?

Comments:First, I want to offer my condolences for the loss of your daughter. I can't imagine how difficult that would be and wish for you whatever solace there can ever be for that sort of tragedy.

As a descendant of the victims, I very much appreciate your relating the tale of the massacre. However, there are a couple of errors in your account which deserve mention. First, the Fancher party was from Arkansas (Carroll County) and not Missouri. This assertion is fully supported by readily available historical census information and survivor depositions
.

Also, the presence of "Missouri Wildcats" has never been documented. It appears that they were invented along with rumors of other misdeeds as an excuse or justification for the massacre. The historical accounts of same are based on heresay and are contradicted by depositions given by the survivors. Contemporary historians (except LDS apologists) have uniformly concluded that this was another myth spread to the LDS faithful to try and explain the inexplicable and obscure the truth. (See, e.g. Bagley, Denton, Krakauer). The myth has resurfaced from time to time. First Brigham blamed the Paiutes. When that was disproved, he blamed the victims. Both slanders endure to this day (evidence your account) despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. More recently, Hinckley blamed the pioneers of Southern Utah. (Salt Lake Tribune interview - 1999). The massacre is one of the most important footnotes to America's westward expansion. It is a story that deserves an honest telling.

Thanks for your interest in this tragic story. In particular, thanks for your apology to the families of the victims. Sadly, it is the only we are likely to ever receive.

Scott Fancher

Second, give me a source on his "polyandrous activities". And a reliable one, not ex-mormon rhetoric.
Third, polygamy wasn't against the chruch policy until well after Joseph Smith was martyred.

So with all due respect: Unless you know what you're talking about, don't talk at all.

Comments:I was raised in the Episcopal Church, and I continue to be a faithful Christian, very involved in my parish. I am also a trained historian with an MA in European history. I recently became interested in investigating Mormonism because I have a neighbor and acquaintance who is Mormon. She has talked a little to me about her church, and I was interested to learn more, basically as an intellectual exercise. I also wanted to figure out why the Mormons I have met have such an air of wide-eyed vapidity.

Well, I must say that I have gotten an interesting education the past few days. I am actually coming away from my investigations more faithful and devoted to God, the real God, than ever. I know that if I were to fall into "sin" by having an affair, or developing a drug dependency, for example, I know that I could go to my priest, or to any member of my congregation and find love, sympathy, encouragement, and someone who would hold my hand and pray with me. I would never find shame, pain, ostracism or rejection. I would be loved and forgiven by God and by those in my Christian community. I know that the rituals of my church have inherent meaning that relate to the life and ministry of Jesus (i.e. Holy Eucharist), rather than being a bunch of ripped-off Masonic secret handshakes that serve no purpose but to make those in the know feel superior to others.

I could go on and on...This web site is very interesting and complete. The historian in me is grateful to be able to look at primary sources, such as the pictures of the "Abraham Papyrus." I am looking forward to exploring it in more detail.

Comments:Hello David,
Thank you for the very informative website. The research you have done to help educate people on the dogma of the LDS history has been very helpful and inspiring to me.
Here are some reasons why I no longer believe in the LDS religion and its teachings.

• I cannot support any religion or institution whose goal is to control, or discriminate against someone because of their gender, ethnicity, I.Q., age, etc.
• I cannot support any religion who decides FOR me when I live or die, or what I can or cannot do with my own body.
• I don't want to be part of a religion that tells me that they're the only "right" one and non-believers must die, or won't get into heaven.
• I don't want to be part of anything I can't question or challenge, nor one in which I am not allowed to compose my own prayers or affirmations - communicate with God in my own way.
• I don't want to be part of a religion that preaches what they determine is "holy," but can't walk their talk.
• I don't believe there is only one symbol for God, or that God looks like any one individual.
In a nutshell, I trust in my personal connection and experiences with the Source (Higher Self, Nature, Goddess, God, All That Is, Cosmic Intelligence - whatever one wants to name It) within myself for spiritual guidance.
Thanks again for the educational and insightful site.
Have a wonderful day.

Comments:Thank you for making this information available. It has helped through my difficult journey of leaving the Mormon Church. I have been a member of the Church for three years, and was working very hard to convert my husband. My goal was to convert him so we and our two young children could be an Eternal family. My husband was very bothered by my baptism. We have endure the roughest three years of our marriage.
My prespective has been changed so much. I still care about the friends I made in the Church, but I can't handle the phone calls, cards, and all the visits any more. They feel bad for me. I know they feel I am being led away my the world or Satan. I was there, I felt the same about other members who stopped coming. I would love to move away and change my phone number. I am working on a letter to the Bishop to have my name removed from the records. I know they're all brainwahed, I was too. I don't want to hurt them with the truth. Thanks for letting me share this, I don't know anyone going through this so I can't really talk to anyone about it.

Comments:I am a member of the church but have decided to leave. I was baptized 8 years ago. the missionaries came to me at a very low time in my life. I don't want to get into that now but i will tell you this, it was so easy to convince myself that they were sent by GOD to help me recover from the situation. They were very understanding and loving and supporting towards me. I was asked to pray to know if the church was true. And here is the shocker, I didn't recieve that warm fuzzy feeling that was promised by a verse in the book of mormon. I remember asking the missionaries if there were some people who would not recieve an answer? They replied that only the unworthy would be unable to recieve answers direct from GOD. But I was worthy,I was reading and praying and going to church I stopped smoking and having sex. I even srated having family home evenings with my 3 year old. So why didn't I know the church was true? Well was to ashamed to tell them I did not recieve the answer cause according to them that would make me unworthy, so I went ahead and got baptized. I stopped going two years later.

During the time I was not attending the church I met my soul mate. The baby came before the wedding but the wedding was planned. When my daughter was 2 I started searching for GOD again. I went on the LDS.org site and gave my name and address to recieve daily news about the church. Two weeks later the sister missionaries were at my door. Yes they were told to visit me and were given information from the web site. I went back to church and right away they started saying that I needed to marry my daughters father or I need to as my bishop put it "TAKE THE TRASH TO THE CURB!" I should of lefted then but I didn't. I wanted them to see my boyfriend the way
i saw him. He was not trash but the best thing that ever happended to me and I loved him mormon or not.
So to make a long story short I decided to pray to know if the church was true again. AND THIS TIME I GOT THE ANSWER! The funny thing is it was just like they said it would be. My answer was so clear. But this time it was that the church of jesus christ was not true. I now believe that when I was praying asking god to tell me that the church was true,he did not answer me because GOD WILL NOT LIE TO HIS BELOVED CHILDREN.

I hope that I was able to help someone else out there who may be in a situation like mine.

Thank you
Mary

Comments:Thank you for your website and Dreambook. Having been raised in Kirtland, Ohio, I was baptised in the RLDS church when 10 years of age. I spent wonderful years attending the Temple there. I was the only one in my family to be baptised into the church. Ad childen in that community we were taught not to argue about the different religions. When a teenager, my parents let me know that my brothers and I were decendents of the Young family. my ggGrandmother was daughter to John Young and Theodocia Kimball. John Young was brother to Brigham. As I entered my late teens, I felt I no longer wanted to stay in the church because of some of the beliefs. I was fortunate to have a wonderful family who continually reminded me to pray for God's leadership in my life. I found that the thoughts that came to me were not "seeds of doubt" but God guiding me. As a result I left the church in Kirtland and attended other churches in my lifetime. You see, I am now 71 years, in 2001 I felt led by God to join the LDS church, where I now reside in the Southwestern, Us. I have been diligent in my studies, but because of my knowledge of what took place in the church down through the years, rituals, polygamy, and other practices I once again am leaving the church, but loving the people. My gggGrandfather had 11 wives, and I have had the opportunity to be in touch with many of his decendents down through the years. I pray someday that the church will erase this practice from their history books. I also do not receive any special peace when I read of the rituals performed in the Temples. I keep God, and Jesus Christ as the comforters in my life. Please dear folks, do not argue about doctrines in the chruches of world. What a waste of time. Love one another no matter what church you attend. Thank you for this wonderful site. Lets KEEP GOD ON THE THRONE AND IN OUR HEARTS.

Comments:I think I might have come across this website a long time ago because it looks familiar. At the time I was researching the church (Mormon) as I have been a member all my life but had become inactive. I was considering returning to church but wasn't sure if it was the mormon church I wanted to return to. I had many church publication, including The History of the Church, but I had never read them (I had just inherited them from my parents). I remember, then, reading on some of the subjects you represent on this page and finding it all there, just as you say. I WAS surprised. You are correct in saying that Mormons do NOT know a lot about the real history of the church - even though it is readily available.

I remember being told in church one Sunday, by a Stake President, how Joseph Smith decided at a very young age not to drink alcohol...etc... and that he never did... What a shock to find out the truth.

Anyway, that was a few years ago and I did not go back to church. But last year I ran into two missionaries, struck up a conversation and ending up giving them my contact information. Of course, they starting giving me the "discussions" and bringing other members over to home. I specifically told them that I would take the discussions but I did not want to be pressured into going to church, I was not ready for that... the pressure started right away.... STRONG!!

They told me to start reading... I wanted to read the Bible (I wanted to find a testimony of Christ - before I ever considered having a testimony of Joseph Smith... and I made this very clear from the beginning). They discouraged me from reading the Bible, they said I "needed" to read the Book of Mormon.

To make a long story... a bit shorter... I started to read the Bible for the first time in my life (not that I hadn't read bits and pieces - out of context and not from start to finish). I was shocked at how many of the scriptures - when read in context - contradict the teachings of the mormon church... and how they take them OUT of context and twist the meaning to support the teachings of the church. I won't go into a list of examples and clog up your guestbook any more than I already have, but I was astonished... Not only did my efforts put the mormon church in a whole new light for me (the only religions I had really ever known) it brought be to Christ. To CHRIST... NOT Joseph Smith.

I have not gotten through all of your pages, but I will be back to explore further.

Mormonism, slams traditional Christianty more than Mormonism.
So thanks, since what they say is true about Mormon's, I decided
to also read what they say about Christianity, now I have been
set free by the truth, and now know that Jesus also was a fraud
and a myth, just like Joseph Smith. I guess its true to know one
is to be one. Again thanks for the info.

Comments:Well my friend, it looks like you studied yourself right out of the chruch. That is why we are cautions not to get to deep in gospel hobbies. It makes people think that they know more than the leaders of the chruch, and then they go astray. As for me, I think that it is important to stay with the basics of the chruch, the centeral teachings of Jesus Christ and his attonement. How we need to live our lives so that we can be with him again. The scriptures are there to help us in this area. If you look for mistakes of people in the chruch, you will find them since none of us are perfect. But the things that will help memebers of the chruch the most and others as well, is to work on their faith and testimony of Christ, that is where the key is. We all need to strengthen our relationalship with Christ. And then as we do and live our lives rightously we will be opened to recieve personal revelations to no for ourselves. Don't get caught up in the history and mistakes of men. Focus on the teachings and living them. Be all that you can be in the gospel of Jesus Christ, this is the time to prepare to meet God. Pray about the things you learn and let the sprit teach you. That is how I gained my own testimony of the Book of Mormon by reading it carefully and praying about it. Then after the trial of my faith, the spirit bore withness to me that it is true. It is saddening to me to read or hear of people that lose there faith and leave the chruch. It goes to show that we can't rely on barrowed light, we all have to sometime gain our own testimony. I am so greatful that I have.

Some great LDS sites on what we believe, not second hand information are LDS.org, and great LDS apologetic sites www.fairlds.com, www.farms.byu.edu, www.jefflindsay.com, www.shields.com and many, many more!! Instead of people coming into this website and hearing only half-truth attacks on what we believe, why not hear the rebuttals for these lies, and then learn what we are truly about.

Comments:Let me begin by saying that I am a member of the LDS church. I believe and practice much of what the church has taught me: Keeping the commandments, daily scripture study, keeping a journal, and date nights have had a very strong influence in my life for good.

Over time however, I found that I could no longer simply rubber stamp everything that the leaders were teaching. More and more of it are at odds with what I have been reading in the scriptures. I finally had to conclude that, if Jesus was right, that we could indeed know people by their works. After much prayerful consideration, I had to admit that the truth was no longer in the church. While all good comes from God, truth seldom comes from leaders interested in keeping their pension plans funded... did not Jesus teach that we could "knock and receive"? I feel sure that a Christian leadership, certainly one that professes to hold a higher priesthood that the Levites, should be able to have the promised "abundance in all things that [they] stood in need of." This was over two years ago.

By way of understanding jus how far off track modern church beliefs are, just last week I was also lead to ponder 3 Nephi 16:10:

"And thus commandeth the Father that I should say unto you: At that day when the Gentiles shall sin against my gospel, and shall reject the fulness of my gospel, and shall be lifted up in the pride of their hearts above all nations, and above all the people of the whole earth, and shall be filled with all manner of lyings, and of deceits, and of mischiefs, and all manner of hypocrisy, and murders, and priestcrafts, and whoredoms, and of secret abominations; and if they shall do all those things, and shall reject the fulness of my gospel, behold, saith the Father, I will bring the fulness of my gospel from among them."

According to LDS belief, Joseph Smith began turning the gentiles into the seed of Abraham. I think that any knowledgeable LDS scholar would agree that the brief time that the Saints "had all things in common" is probably the only time that anyone could possibly say that the gentiles had ever "received the fullness of the Gospel." Why? Because just like the Apostles in Jerusalem, as well as the Apostles the Americas, living as Jesus does marks that the fullness of Jesus is present.

It is easy to understand how only a constant commitment to supporting your fellow beings, without money and without price, in accordance with the very way that Jesus lives, allows even the routinely ordained leaders to do the mighty works more abundantly. Indeed, even if Jospeh Smith had bothered to name his prophetic successor before his death, only someone living in this way could "not be permitted to lead the church astray." It seems obvious that this is why God was working through him to set up the church in Missouri. They had to receive the fullness of the gospel, their works bearing witness.

By the time of his martyrdom however, Joseph knew that the people had been reject. He also knew what he had done. After he detected that even his "life was of no value to his friends" (official church doctrine), he went to die.

After reading D&C 110 - 112 this morning, I wanted to know what ever happened to Thomas B. Marsh. I went to google, typed in his name, and was lead to his affidavit on your web site. After pondering this affidavit, I know that it is also true. Moreover, I believe that the acts he describes therein testify to that which is document in 3 Nephi. When this testimony is combined with passages such as D&C 101:6, theses sworn accounts confirm what has been both what has been written in the LDS scriptures, as well as fit the pattern for the observed works of a fallen people (paid leadership, etc.)

I would like to add my voice to the other LDS members in support of what you have presented on this site. The sanitized record presented by the LDS church omits the fact that the LDS people have been rejected... Just like the Jews of old. But there is still a lot of good advice in the organization. Just as the advice that Jesus gave to His "fellow members" at one time during His ministry, members should feel free to select and do "after the manner of" those things that they teach, not necessarily "after the manner of" what they do.

So what's next? According to 3 Nephi 16 (and a few others), the fullness is supposed to come unto what the world would be able to identify as the "House of Israel", next. I strongly believe that I, the people in the church, as well as our paid leadership, need to be looking to the Jews. After all, you need to have a FULLNESS of the gospel to build up a temple in Jerusalem, or for the abomination of desolation to fire the starting shot that leads to the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ!

There is much good in the cultural aspects of Mormonism. The emphasis on the family is to be commended. It is my prayer that one day a well known apologist for the Mormon Church will denounce Mormonism. Thank you for your web site.

I urge the honest seeker of both mind and heart to check out the following site which explores in detail how Joseph Smith created the Book of Abraham and what proof there is to support its authenticity. Comments:Hi,
I'm an LDS member myself. Sure your site is great if you want to cut the church apart. What about doing a similar job with the lutheran or catholic church, that would be like watching a splatter movie.

You a probably right about many of your points (many lack some serious evidence), but whats the point? I'm living a normal life with my family, friends (many non-mormon), job and interest, oh yeah, and then I'm a mormon. What about it ? Is it worse than being a Lutheran, catholic, jew or muslim ? Any religion may be used to do good or bad, and we all have the freedom to choose what it will be.

So for those who read this site and decided not to become a member or to leave the church, ask yourself, is it going to make my life better? If the answer is yes, then follow that answer and be happy. Leave or do not make a new appointment with the missionaries. Are we still friends ?

"Actual originals should be in some archive and be used to support reports such as this." or "Artistic licence should not have been used to make the facsmiles look more like originals." In either case, the author should be asked his oppion of the graphics as he may not have been asked to approve them.

In "History of Joseph Smith" by Lucy Mach Smith pages 279-83. Hyrum reports giving 40 names to be witnesses then another 20 to a puppet court that arrested first one group then the next. Having still no witnesses they see a man on the street who can testify. He soon is fleeing for his life. My question is: Do you allow this as evidence that Joseph could not see the trap and was looking out for number one. or Do you suppress the story because it put the government in a bad light? Please be balanced.

Comments:I was just passing through trying to find information on the Kinderhook Plates. The church makes the claim that Journals in that era were written in the first person and thus it was not Joseph Smith speaking when the Times and Seasons article. I have never encountered that peculiar writing style before. Very well put together site. My only suggestion would be that quite a bit of information (polygamy was illegal in Illinois for instance) is repeated unnecessarily.

To become a Mason, one has to do so of ones' own free will...also to 'seriously declare, on your honour....uninfluenced by mercenary motives...'. Mr Smith was an obvious liar, and to later break his obligations a somewhat dishonest and forgetful one, too.

Comments:I am a Mormon convert, and it amazing to me the amount of time you have put in to dogging this religion. The missionaries told me not to ask them if it's true or not but to pray and ask God. They never pressured me. They were adamant at not baptizing me if I wasn't ready. I know the church is true. I don't care who believes it or not.
Men/women are fallible. They make mistakes. They succumb to temptation. The Word of Wisdom is just a guide to live by. It basically states that everything should be taken in moderation. I don't beat myself up if I cheat and have a latte. It's progress not perfection. So Joseph Smith had some drinks on occaision. It only shows me that he was human and made mistakes too. Only Christ was perfect.
As for the polygamy thing. Sure, it was instituted for awhile. I accept their reasoning. That's not to say that some people have run away with it. Some of the families despised having to do that. Some (men) fought tooth and nail to keep it. Some still practice it today claiming to be members of the church although, they are not recognized.
As for all the other crap you've got on this site, who cares? All these people who go on here to look for ammunition to throw at the church or their "Mormon friends"...I pity them. That time could be better spent helping others.
I have studied many religions. Buddism, Hinduism, Daoism, Christianity, Catholocisim etc. I've been aethiest, agnostic- you name it. But this is the only one that felt right in my soul. Much to my shock. I am an artsy fartsy...self described alternative chick..who smoked avidly, lived for lattes and much more.
I still retain my individuality. I love the gospel and my brothers and sisters at church. None of us are perfect and that comforts me.
One of the things I love about them is you rarely hear someone from church talk smack about other religions. Unlike other religions when it comes to "Mormons!" lol
This site and others like it are a perfect example. If anything it has only served to strengthen my testimony. If I ever waver in my testimony, I am certainly not going to rely on propaganda like this that was created by a fallible man. I will go straight to the Boss. lol...my higher power...whom I also choose to call Heavenly Father and pray for guidance that the truth may be manifested in me.
peace

Comments:I enjoyed checking out your website. I was not sure whether you are a Mormon, or someone that had been a Mormon before. Whatever the case is, I noticed that in the history of Joseph Smith, you state that he was a polygamist, had been to jail and escaped, and was a heavy drinker. I was wanting to know where you obtained this information. I am a research analyst in communication and find that many of the "facts" stated in the webpage have no referenced notation. I am not criticizing your work, just questioning where you obtained that information. My parents became Mormons about 6 months ago and were baptized in the church, as well as my younger sisters (8 and 12 years.)Although they have started going to LDS church, my parents have never imposed the religion or their beliefs in me or my older brother and sister.Recently, by chance I was approached by two Mormon elders as I went to go get something to eat. It seemed almost like fate that I encountered them that day being that my mother and father had become Mormons recently. I have never in my life been approached by someone from Mormon church. I am not Mormon but have studied with them a bit. I have always been confused on religion but I do note that the missionaries that teach are very young (almost my age 24 or younger. They are sent out to preach but notice that many of them do not know specifics, including things from the Bible. The missionaries that come by my home have been very insistent of me being baptized.I have a 4 year old daughter from a previous relationship but my current boyfriend has been her father since she was born. I have been living with my boyfriend already for almost 3 years and they have tried to convince me that living apart or getting married should be done if i want to get baptized, which the law of chastity comes into play. I felt very lost. I am not at a point in my life where I want to get married, but because of my financial situation and my studies in college I cannot live and make it on my own. The missionaries kept insisting that I choose to live on my own or get married. They told me that if one of us didnt move out, i had to get married before baptismal. And if i got married, God would bless me so much more. I became upset at the fact that they came to a determination to tell me that if i get married just to get baptized, my relationship with my boyfriend/husband would be right in the eyes of God and that he would help me. I couldnt beleive that these missionaries who are younger, some much younger, and most of them not ever having a romatic relationship in their lives could understand what its like to have a relationship and think about getting married. They certainly could not step in my shoes. What made me angry though was the fact that after they told me that I would be blessed in getting married to live the law of chastity, one elder said to me " How would you feel if your daughter grew up and realized that the person who raised her as his daughter was never married to her mother?" I then told them that I felt very pressured to make decisions that I was not ready to make and that it gave me negative feelings about studying with them. Its been 3 weeks since that evening that we had that conversation and they havent come back since. I agreed to an extent their teachings but I am skeptical about their "prophets" and Joseph Smith. All I would like to know is what is the meaning of life for me and what is my purpose to be in this world, and where do we go from here after we die. Thats all i would like to know. God and Jesus know who I am. I would just like to make it through life knowing the truth.....

In case you're wondering I'm not mormon, I just think that people like you are pathetic as hell.

Comments:Excellent reading. I have "removed" my name from the rolls of the Mormon Church - however not without help from a lawyer with the bishop, counselors, etc., to block my wishes. This experience reminded me of what my girlfriend had to endure to hide her grandmother from the James Jones cult!!!

If I had more room, I could relay a recent story about the death of my mother, and how the mormon church assisted in robbing the "gift" of inheritance from her children.

I am WOMAN....and have the right to be heard, to think for myself and NOT be a slave to ANY MALE!!!

We have too few people like you in America, let alone the world. Hear that? It is me clapping and telling everyone I know about your site. I swear, I wrote it down inside of my daybook to share! If you ever come to California, and more specifically, the Central Coast, please look us up. We are the only 'Nolen' listed in Paso Robles, CA. It also helped me to compare the Bible with the book of mormon and other doctrine that the mormons were teaching there unsuspecting prey.
I know that I sound bitter, but I try to live by the old adage "Hate the sin, love the sinner. My only hope is that more from the mormon church, come to read your site and come to know God as I now know he is. He is in paraphrase God in the flesh, that came by way of the virgin Mary. He died on the cross for ALL of our sins, not just some, And he rose again, asseneded into heaven. Some day to return in all of his glory. Jesus gave us a gift that we could not buy with works of any kind. GOD BLESS

Comments:I read Steven E. Farley's book on the "MORMON MOUNTAIN MEADOWS MASSACRE" and I must say, that this is, without a doubt an unusual collection of events that occurred on the Western Frontier, in the volatile years of 1857-58. There are uniquely interesting and highly detailed accounts of a most pertinent and intimate nature regarding the condition in Utah and the West in 1857-58, that up to this time, haves never, to the best of my knowledge, been seen by the general public. Through his book, you will witness secret Mormon rituals, and the dark side of the 19th century Mormon doctrion, like polygamy's vicious bite, forcing women both Mormon and non-Mormon to marry against their will, and so much more on the Mountain Meadows Massacre as never before told. This book his a must for the historian.
