| Comments: | Hi Richard,
I'm just getting started in this research stuff. I'm wondering, just how many countries does the "Ewing" name originate from? My dad, Kenneth R. Ewing Sr. said he thinks his family is from Ireland. I contacted the "Historical Research Center" and paid for a crest that is supposed to be for the Ewing clan, but it say's the Ewing's are from Scotland. The crest is "A Demi lion rampant holding in his Dexter paw a mullet gules".(Whatever that means) The Motto: "AudaciberZ" (which means Audacity) Anyway, this crest and history that I have shows the Ewing name goiong back to April 6, 1574 to a Alexander Ewin, son of Andro. It also says the Ewing name is a form of the Gaelic surname Mac Eoghain. What do you think? Do I have a fake? Thanks. Love your web site. |

| Comments: | I have done some searching for origins of my family in
Scotland, which came here just before the turn of the century from Glasgow. Grandfather——James; Grandmother—— Matilda (nee Gilmore). They had 13 children (four in Scotland), my father, Charles, being the youngest. Only the grandchildren and their decendents survive. James came here with a brother, David, but I don’t know where David settled. James and Matilda went to Pennsylvania. He had been a coal miner in Scotland and eventually became a mine engineer in the coal belt here. |

more information on the Ewing Clan. The question are Ewing's MacEwan's a sept of MacLaulin's? or are Ewing's septs of Campbell's? and really no relation to MacEwans? The Book "Ewing our Family Heritage" seems to say we have no highland clan affiliation. So, here I am. Enjoyed it. Thanks! and Audaciter! -J.C. -> Henry of Chester, PA -> James of Inch Island. |

| Comments: | I am A Ewing from my birth mother line. R.Ewing Watts.
I found one time the Ewing name came from Eagle Wing due to the fact a child had been capture by an eagle and was taken off on the eagle wings to the nest. The child lived by using the wings to slide to freedom. Also I found at one time that one of the Ewings who came to America was capture by the Indians and lived with them taking an Indian wife who was a daughter of the cheif. He escape later and lived with his first wife till she died and then return back to his Indian bride. He and the Indian bride had a lot of children as well as his first wife. So the Indian blood runs in some veins. Any way I am searching for the informaiton on this line and all information here is beyond scope for a first timer. Thank you |

| Comments: | Hi,
Came across your site when researching something else. Ewings originally came from Ireland, emigrating to Scotland (Argylshire) in the 1500s. It's a bit downhill from there. The Euan Clan had a small wooden castle and were soon subsumed by their neighbours the MacLachlans, who had a nice big stone castle a couple of miles further up Loch Fyne. In 1745, the MacLachlans (and Ewings) joined the Jacobite revolution on the side of the rebels and came down to Derby with Prince Charlie. When they retreated north after the skirmish at Swarkestone Bridge (which I cross every morning on the way to work, and which holds a reenactment the first weekend in December) there were some who decided that it was better to assimilate into English life than to rturn to Argyle and pay dues to the MacLachlan Laird. That's where I come from. The then Laird, Lachlan MacLachlan was fatally shot at the battle of Culloden and the failure of the message he was carrying to reach its destination was a small part of the defeat of the Clans. In the clearances (ethnic cleansing) of the Highlands, many Ewings were murdered and many more were deported to America and the Caribbean as slaves. That's probably where you come from. Best wishes cousin, Malcolm. |

| Comments: | Hi Richard
I got the T shirt in respect of the 'Ewing' clan. This might not hit the spot but here goes. As I have read in the "Gathering of the clans " website and other searches. The name originated in Ireland in around the 4th century AD, (Pre-Christianity). It came from the O'neil family (The Old Kings of Ireland, O'Neil means in Gaelic, Of Nine, because he had 9 son's the eldest of which was Eoghain (scotish derviation) or Eoglhain (Irish) the various regional dialects pronounce it in many various ways so it is unclear. But, Owen, (of Ewen) is a most used deritive. Hence County Tyrone, in Ireland , County Of 'Owen' I could go on for hours. but I can save you the trouble of looking for a tartan, the Irish had a clan weave of sorts, as Tartan did'nt come into significance untill the 1750's the union of the galic clans to the british union, ( The union Jack and all that.) Forget " MacEwan " the name means son of Ewan or Ewen probably a decendant of our Ewing in Scotland. although they do have a apt Tartan. But No, that was'nt good enough for me. I reserched the O'Neil Tartan. to say the least it was a crude weave, being the 4th-5th Centurys. I could not forsee any of my family looking good in it, It resembled a cheap Mexican blanket, without any colour. It composed of a Karki Beige, washed out green and a obsquere blue in 3-4 inch band widths. that was how it was presented on my computer. Suitably Gutted, I opted for a "MacEwan Tie to wear at my freinds wedding in Scotland. Well the Ewing clan in Scotland had lands ajacent to the Campbell lands. As with all scotish Clans they were allways fighting each other, robbing each other cattle and general Badarse activitys. Well in one such fight two warring factions were asking for soldiers to fight on their side as it were , one of them were the English. Conseqently, by choosin the wrong side they lost their lands. The Cambbells sent men to both sides, explaining that the losing Campbell men, were clan outlaws. I think at this point, a lot of the remaining Ewings emigrated. I think it was around the early to mid 1600's possibly later. Old Name most certainly, there is a Tombstone from the 5th century in scotland, I cannot say where though. I hope this helps, If not it's a goood laugh specially the tartan. Regards Mal. M J Ewing Hastings UK |
