| Comments: | There is an ongoing Assyrian Heritage DNA Project which has these goals:
* To help all Assyrian and Syriac/Aramaic-Speaking men and women gain a better understanding of their ethnic identity and heritage. * To try to help Assyrians learn about the migration paths of their Assyrian and Syriac/Aramaic-Speaking ancestors during the diaspora after the fall of the Assyrian Empire in 612 B.C. * To try to learn more about both the ancient people who preceded the beginning of the Assyrian Empire and about the ancient Assyrians. * To help Assyrians who live in the USA and other western countries find relatives who are living in the West and/or in the Middle East. Men with matching or very similar 37 marker Y-DNA scores will have excellent evidence that they are related. They can then communicate with each other to try to determine who their common Assyrian ancestor was. This is an opportunity for all Assyrian and Syriac/Aramaic-Speaking men and women to order a DNA test kit and expand the Assyrian DNA database. By doing so, you will help to make sure that the genetic and historical past of Assyrians, which has been overlooked for too long, will begin to achieve its deserved recognition by the world. Participation in the Assyrian Heritage DNA Project by many Assyrians will raise our visibility as a significant Middle Eastern ethnic group that continues to thrive in the twenty-first century. The URL for the webpage which describes the Assyrian Heritage DNA Project in more detail and shows the DNA test results of the current participants is: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/AssyrianHeritageDNAProject/ You can place an order for your DNA test at: https://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=U31042&special=True I'll be glad to answer questions. Joel Elias and I, as co-administrators of the Assyrian Heritage DNA Project, will be available to assist you in the interpretation of your DNA test results. Mary Yonan yonan at fgi.net |

| Your Name: | Henri von KELAITA |
| Your E-mail address: | Counsellor@army.com |
| Comments: | This is on behalf of my late Grandfather Simon KELAITA
The name: "v o n K E L A I T A" In the years 1905/6 Simon, from the house of Kelaita, stayed some months with my parents, vicar Otto Wendt and Margarethe born Sack, in Lerbeck near Porta Westfalika. We had already known his brother Thoma before. He made us cling to the love work towards the Nestorian church in Kurdistan as an important missionary action. My father won gradually a great love for this action to the Kingdom of God. His eyes continued opening to the meaning of the old Nestorian church whose leaders requested help from German Christianity. In the vicarage of Lerbeck originated a centre for the thorough investigation of the relationship of the Orient and of the ecclesiastical historical questions concerning these remainders of the original Christian past. These researches were equally shared by very renowned specialists in Berlin, at various other universities, also in England, Sweden and Switzerland. A significant brochure by the Swedish bishop D.Dr.Ulmann contained the results of all these efforts. This brochure was at the same time a call to the European Christianity, of the original ancient Nestorian church, who preserved itself as an island within the nations of Islam, to assist them and to help them to reach a new blooming of their faith. With all these searches, the Nestorian patriarchate played a meaningful role. The relatives of the old patriarchal family bore their name with the addition "from the house of Kelaita". This designation played within the Nestorian nation a similar role as with old German prince families, the old families (von Habsburg, von Liechtenstein, etc.). The patriarch believed to be able to prove that his family tree reached back to the time of Nestorius, and that with the house of Kelaita it is a matter of bishopal succession, which should be compared to the papal suc¬cession which is believed to reach back to the apostle Peter. English scholars took these things far more seriously than did the Germans in the beginning. They knew that the name Kelaita was mentioned in the Bible already 430 B.C. (Ezra 10:23, Nehemiah 8:7 and 10:10). At that time the book "The Nestorians as descendants of the ten tribes of Israel", was published in England. English scholars discovered in Kurdistan i.e. in the patriarchal seat of Marbishu, an abundance of interesting proofs that this old church of the Orient in the mountains of Assyria in the first Christian century, could only be explained by descendants of the ten tribes of Israel, who had embraced there in the mountains the gospel and founded a Christian church. As per tradition, the leader of the Thomas Christians in India was respectively appointed and delegated by the Nestorian church in Kurdistan. A member of that patriarchate had to be a Kelaita. European Christendom was at that time deeply moved of these discoveries. They had the same effect as archaeological excavations in Egypt or in Mesopotamia. Strangely enough the adherents of the Nestorian church rejected with unimaginable passion to be of Jewish descent. They called themselves proudly Assyrians or "Assyrian Christians", and were filled with an invincible hate against Jews, and against the imputation that accord¬ing to blood they were Jews. The discussions of these archaeological, national and church histori¬cal questions did not come to a conclusion, since the first world war had drawn momentarily an inexorable line under all these things. When Simon from the house of Kelaita was married to my sister Elisabeth Wendt of the Lerbeck's vicarage, on April 26th, 1906, my fa¬ther requested of the Lerbeck's registrar that his future son in law be registered as Simon von Kelaita. The registrar declined. Equally the competent bailiff in Hausberge at the Porta Westfalika. My father turned to the president of the Government in Minden who requested for his part the necessary documents to fulfil this wish. Gradually all the required documents mentioned in enclosure 1 were made available. Decisive were the conclusion results of the research of both, then generally known orientalists D.Dr.Hilgenfeld of Jena and D. von Orelli of Basel. The former explained in his opinion, the name "from the house of Kelaita" or french "de Kelaita" or Syrian "d'Kelaita" should be rendered in German with the German title of nobility "von". By means of these opinions and by order of the president of the government, the name "Simon von Kelaita" was subsequently written in the register of the registrar's office. Simon von Kelaita came to Germany during the first world war on September 1st, 1915, accompanied by his wife and his three children. From the foreign office and from the highest military offices, he received a very significant political assignment, he was sent as plenipotentiary by the German empire's foreign office for a secret mission in the Orient (in October 1915) and there, was appointed from the general field'-marshal-Pasha, von der Goltz-Pasha, as military and diplomatic co-worker on a decisive position of the entire world war front (see form 2). The letters, von der Goltz sent through the foreign office to vicar Otto Wendt in Lerbeck, who was personally known to him, in which he expressed how important the co-work of Simon von Kelaita has been to him, have been destroyed. The only thing remain¬ing is a personal hand written card by the general fieldmarshal. Why did all these documents disappear ? Father had written a brochure in which he noted the frightening events in the Orient which he experienced through his son in law. The foreign office could only authorize the printing of this brochure if the emperor's head quarters gave its consent. Upper Court Preacher D. Dryander presented my father's compiled brochure to emperor William II, who only made the short remark: "Temporarily we are not yet on friendly terms with Turkey. About our ally nothing disadvantageous should be made public." This important piece of German history and world history has then disappeared. Father had all motives to be silent over all this matter. The issue of the first world war made it anyway completely impossible to say anything openly about the conditions in the Orient. 2nd part The old German empire did not deem it necessary to object to the German nobility title in front of the name Kelaita. The Hitler government thought differently about these things. The matter became actual when the widow Elisabeth von Kelaita returned to Germany. Until then she was like her husband a Persian subject. Now she tried for herself and her children, who, to one exception, were all born in Germany, to obtain her civic rights. The president of the government of Arnsberg demanded from this Persian woman proof, from where originated the German nobility title, with this perhaps not at all Aryan woman. He was informed that the president of the government of Minden had then so decided. But in Minden the documents could not be found (probably they were sent at that time to the responsible home office). Consequently the Nazi authorities decreed that Mrs Kelaita and her children had no claim on the "von" as they were not in position to produce a German nobility letter. At that time it was not a matter of nobility or not nobility, but the life of an alleged not Aryan woman and her children was at stake. As the undersigned suspected the rising danger for his sister and her children, through continual contacts with the proceedings in Berlin, he turned to a ministry adviser in the home office of the Reich, whom he knew since years and who had fol¬lowed since years the work of the Nestorians with great interest. As this man who was in the past plenipotentiary of the high commissioner of the Baltic lands, is still alive, I would not like to acquaint the records with his name. Several times, when the mentioned was in Berlin, he endeavoured to ob¬tain from the Reichs-ministry of interior a clarification, that Mrs von Kelaita carried her name legitimately. The Reichs-ministry of interior explained then also to the under¬signed, it is understood that the governor of Arnsberg could not re¬voke a decision of the president of the govern¬ment of Minden. It is especially now the most inconvenient time to verify the old decision of the president of government of Minden. He is convinced that the family Kelaita belonged to the orien¬tal nobil¬ity, and that Nestorians are to be looked upon as Aryans. He also knows about the merits which Simon von Kelaita earned for Germany. He is however of the opinion, that only in calm times it could be decided if the German-Reich recognizes or declines the german¬izing of a foreign nobility. In any case it was achieved that also the Nazi-Government na¬tionalized Mrs von Kelaita and her children and naturalized them as Aryans. With this result one could be at that time satisfied, as which fate would have ensued to a family coming from the Orient and not recognized as Aryans, was only too clear for us. Nevertheless, I have insisted, Kelaitas should not be willing to give up the "von" out of fear, as they have a right to keep it after the decision of imperial Germany, even if the Nazi government denies it. 3rd Part After the end of world war two and the sinking of the Nazi-government, it would be interesting to know, how the competent authorities of today's Germany stand to this question. With the objective answer I could make a juristic doctoral thesis. One could prove without difficulty that in eastern Germany the German nobility title is considered as the worst stain, with which a person could be brought under suspicion, to belong to the former young noble men. Equally one could prove that in the west the marks of honour which originated from the time of Hitler, or even of the emperors epoch, still mean something. But for the question of the "von" Kelaita, the decisions of the authorities in the east or west are meaningless. After that three German governments did not succeed to forbid to some members of the family Kelaita, the translation of their very ancient father's name with the "von", it will also be indifferent in the future how this question will be solved in America, or in the Orient, or in Germany. Should in some future time a reinforced Germany legally decree, that only old German noble families could carry the "von", then the members of the family von Kelaita who live on German soil, should accommodate or emigrate and call themselves "de Kelaita" or else. However that is still a good while away. Of all these small conditional questions, caused by the changing governments, only one remains of importance. The name Kelaita points out to a very ancient origin and means, that the eternal God has enjoined a holy responsibility upon the bearers of this name, as His blessings go up from generation to generation to the thousandth member of those who fear Him. Upon these blessings no earthly rulers, nor archaeologically taught scholars dispose. Blumberg/Casekow Superintendent K.E. | Comments: | I read the article on Assyrians in Turlock. My grandparents lived there and I grew up hearing a lot about the Assyrians and especially the Houbyars. My mother, Ethel Brier, loved them and spoke very highly of the family. One day in the late 1950's, a family car stopped in front of our house. The car had a flat tire. We went out to help. It turned out these were friends or family (I don't remember) of the Houbyars! My mother and the family talked and talked. They returned to our house about one week later with shoeboxes for each of us children filled with a delicare baklava which I remember to this day. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who knew of all of these people in Turlock, as I have no one to ask about this history or, in fact, about my own. |

And searching for "estrangelo" brought up a font used of different languages. I cannot believe how coincidental all of this is. |

| Comments: | Hello to all Assyrians, I am an Assyrian from Australia. Married to an Australian who loves the Assyrian people and music. I love chatting to other Assyrians from all over and keeping in touch. I was born in Iraq, Kirkuk. We emigrated to Australia in 1967. I'm very glad to have found this web site, I enjoy reading about Assyrians - what they're doing in their part of the Word, history, music...just about everything!
God bless you all. |

| Comments: | Greetings from the State of Georgia in the USA.
I am 44 years old, married to a man from Iran, and I have three teenagers. I was raised in Alaska, the oldest of seven children. I am college educated and have traveled in Europe & Asia. I am interested in writing to other women to share our differences/commonalities with. The world is indeed getting smaller but communication will make the differences easier as we move forward. If you would be interested in sharing your life stories, please e mail me. |
