I feel all your works are fascinating. Whoever said that your paintings are objectionable is the greatest fuck up of this millenium. Honestly, and from the deepest corner of my heart, your works Geisha has a profound meaning in it. It reflects your mind, character, belief, mood and warmth of your personality. In the beginning, when i entered your site, I felt its going to be a waste of time but i got pulled into it like quicksand. You are a wonderful personality in your paintings and sculpture. You are a very straight forward person. After seeing your work, I'd also like to share suggestions that might be of interest and help. 1. Take time to experiement with materials you've never used. 2. Talk to as many current artists as possible: meaning those who work steadily in their field and who are well known by the public. 3. Take a break from themes you're working with, and explore subjects that will stretch you intellectually. You'll come back to your subjects with a different twist. 4. Work big.... 5. Research what you normally wouldn't. 6. Talk to people who are honest with how they see your work. They are the ones who won't waste your time. 7. Pay attention to mistakes. You'll discover something new with the material if you allow for some accidents. 8. Art and business have a symbiotic relationship. You need knowledge of some business and advertising skills if you're going sell your work. 9. If you think you know how to write well, think again because you'll be writing artist's statements and proposals up the wall. Keep writing. 10. Make a series of work that relate to each other. 11. Walk away from what you know is safe and easy. 12. Know what you want to claim as a "Christian who happens to be working with art as a tool." Don't waver from those Biblical principals. You are being watched and held accountable. 13. If your work says something else to your audience you don't intend, rework it until you express what you mean in the first place. I know there will be times that you're just experiementing... 14. Think hard about the posts on here. "Oh that looks cool." "I like it, it's pretty." "This picture is so awesome." For the people that make those statements, ask them why and what is it specifically in your work that make them react that way. You'll soon come to find out that cool and nice just don't cut it when it comes to constructive comments. You won't learn enough to improve. 15. Best Wishes to you and keep working hard. |

I have come across your site from reading some of your posts on the Newgrounds BBS and felt I should throw in my two cents about it. Being an artist for over two and half decades myself, one of the most constructive things I felt any of my friends, family and/or professors could do for me was offer not only positive critism, but negative constructive critism as well. Looking over your website, my personal feeling is that your artwork shows great potential. There is definite acknowledgement of some understanding of human anatomy, as well as your unique display of iconography and color to express ideas. After struggling through art school with a BFA and having several bouts with my high school, art school professors/dean, and surrounding out-of-school critics with their brutal onslaught of remarks of my own work, I swore to myself I would never lie to anyone about my opinion of THEIR work. From one artist to another, I would like to say that what I see I feel needs some work. I have read your posts on the BBS and am aware of the mammoth appreciation you take... in yourself. All proper jargon aside, I would say you have a pretty big ego, am I right? I realize most artists have huge egos but my immediate reaction to this assumption is that it distracts from the overall process of making your work. My advice to you would be, lay off trying to put yourself on a pedastal and take some time to look deeper into what you are doing. Quit patting yourself on the back for a second to see your art for what it is and how someone else might read it. Now, you probably don't like me right now. If not, that's okay. Its not my job to be nice to you and make you like me. Its my job as a fellow critic and artist to tell you how I feel. Hopefully you can take some of this to heart when you make your future pieces. It all depends on how important you feel your art is to others when they see it. One of the most valuable things my professors at school told me was: "When you make art you have to make it as not only the artist, but the audience as well. Try to view what you are doing with as fresh and untainted of a glance as you can, doing whatever you can to achieve these means... ...The one thing that an art viewer will ask him/herself when they walk up to your work is 'Do I believe what you are trying to tell me?' Its not about the style of the work, but how confident you are in what you are trying to tell people through it." The features displayed in your artwork show resemblances (at times a little TOO closely) to the well-known artist H. R. Giger, who I see you are a fan of from your link. While influence on your creative license is okay, I would pay attention to when you think you've crossed over into artistic plagerism. The studies of the body need some sharpening also, that is if you are going for a more realistic look. If that is the case, I would try and study the curves and proportions of the body. Good books to start with would be "Dynamic Anatomy" by Burne Hogarth and "Anatomy for the Artist" by Jeno Barcsay, if you don't have them already. I would search a little deeper and try to get grips as to what you want to express for yourself. I think there is more there. I wouldn't have posted this otherwise if I hadn't seen your self-appreciative posts on the BBS. I feel that someone who is so proud of herself may not've had the proper level of input from her audience. I think it was Picasso who said, "In art, once you feel you have succeeded, you instantly fail." It has always helped me when someone gets in my face about the reality of things, that is why I chose to write this. Not to mention take the liberty to keep myself anonymous, so you won't know who I am. Thus, keeping the issue of names obsolete. Anyways, take this how you will. Hopefully it helps. You may be either planning how to take this post constructively, or some clever way to get back at me. Thats okay though. After all, that IS what art is all about. Isn't it? |
