| Comments: | Hello,
My father, Thomas Heller, was a ball turret gunner on" Dianne Darling" which was shot down on I believe March 6th, 1944 over Germany near Berlin. He ended up in Stalag Luftwaffe #6. He rarely spoke of any of his experiences and of course, now that he is no longer here to ask I am left wishing I had. If any one has any information to share with me I would really appreciate it. Also, I have a really nice photo of his plane and crew I could email to people connected to the "Dianne Darling." Thanks! Kem |

| Comments: | i have just recently had rekindled interest in my dad's war years. He passed away in 1987 so I can't ask him questions...thank goodness for the computer age. My dad was William Greenhaw from Roswell,NM. He was a waist gunner, part of Peder Larsen's crew who often flew the B17 number 338777 W. Their name was Peder's Parade, and this website has a photo of the pilot Larsen's painted bomber jacket which is on display at the museum at the former Snetterton Heath airfield. My dad was an artist and he painted this jacket as well as many others, including his own. In fact, he painted enough bomber jackets that earned enough money for the down payment on his first house after the war. I have his original bombing mission diary as well as world war two photos. His three fellow crew that I knew he maintained contact with throughout his life were Peder Larsen, Marion Eakes, and Hugh Ashford. |

He was in the 813 BS/482nd Bomber Group. My father died in 1969 at the age of 49. He was always proud of his service in the Mighty 8th. My brothers and I have some letters he wrote and a few mementos & are trying to answer some questions we have now that we didn't ask when he was still alive. We have a cloth patch with a picture of a helmeted firefly dropping a bomb. Has anyone seen or do you know the significance of this insignia?
Also, the list of my father's missions have the initials "SPR" in front of them. Do you know what this stands for? Another website (USAAF.com/8thaf/bomber/482bg) mentions "pickling sorties." What were those? Thanks very much for any information you can provide |

He flew on the "Bashful Marion" B-24 and then on a B-17 which had nose art involving "Rivets". I did go to a "487" Reunion in Buffalo in 1992...it was great. |

On a recent visit to the 8th AF Museum I couldn't find a record of him in the log or on the memorial so did some digging. Your site and Ancestry.com filled in a number of gaps and gave the details of his 4th mission as a tail gunner when his B-17, Winged Fury was lost. He was the only fatality of that msiion to Augsburg. I will try to have the museum make proper note of his duty and sacrifice. Thanks for the details on my namesake. Jim Alderdice, Former Sgt USAF |

| Comments: | My father joined the USAAF bomber command at a base near Wool Fox Lodge, England after serving three and 1/2 years with the RAF. He enlisted in the RAF in Feb. 1940 and transferred to the USForces Aug 3, 1943. The Might 8th had bases in Norfolk and Suffolk, but I only have readable records for the RAF and the NPRC cannot find his U.S.records. My father was born in Dublin, Ireland so I have half brother who has a scrap of information. John Joseph Judge was an aerial gunner who flew 10 bombing missions in the USAAF ET in 1944. Honorably Discharged June 1945 in New York. I do not know the bomber group or airfield where he was stationed, but he flew missions over Germany and was also a Lead Aircraft Mechanic and parachute Rigger in the RAF. He told my mother his unit received a special medal from the president for one of the dangerous missions. I never knew my father. My parents were divorced when I was five years old and he left New York and returned to Ireland. Before he passed away in 1996, he sent me three letters. I have done a lot of research on his military records. The RAF sent me his records and three medals he received from 1940-1943, but it's harder to get info from his US service. I believe he was in the 2nd Bombardment Division because the air bases were very close to where he was discharged form the RAF on Aug 2nd and he enlisted in the USAAF on Aug. 3rd. That narrows the group to possibily the 93rd Bombardment Group - Does this sound reasonable? |

She joined the RAF when the war broke out and was in photo recon. They have both passed away now, my mum in 2005 and dad in 2007. I have been looking through some items & pics I found as I prepare for a family reunion. I know he flew 30 missions some of them on the Nevada Avenger. His rank was T/Sgt. and was a radio man. He passed away Feb. 8th, 2004 at the age of 81 2 months shy of his 60th wedding aniversary (Mom passed away in Nov. 2006). I know there are more pics of the planes & crew & I will be looking for them. Dad never talked much about his service and unfortunately I never pursued him about it. He did earn the DFC & Bronze Star. I actually found his "Individual Flight Records"dating from his training in Kingman, AZ in Dec. 1943 through his wartime flights from Grafton, England ending in Feb., 1945. He married my mom in Ardmore, OK and after he was released from the service settled in Alexandria, LA and raised 4 children. Our Scout Group had acquired the hut to become their new HQ. It's still there were it was re-erected to this day. I can send a photo if it would be of interest. |

| Comments: | Hi,
I don't think I'm at the right place because I didn't find my husbands cousin's Fighter Group or squadron listed, but I was wondering if anyone knew Capt. James Howell Jones? He was a P-47 pilot with the 325th Fighter Group: 319th Squadron. He was downed on or about July 20, 1944 and presumed MIA. My husband was trying to find info on him and his other cousin Brigadier General Billy Sunday Jones who died Mar. 1969 in Florida. My husband Charles Foy Babb retired from the military in 1994 after 28 years as a corpsman with the USN, FMF in Vietnam and USCG. He died unexpectedly in Aug. 2007. After my grief, I decided to try and finish his mission and do it for his memory book and his genealogy. Thank you for your kind attention to my request and have a blessed day. |

| Comments: | Several years ago I visited Lavenham, war time home of the 487th Bombardment Group. The local folks were friendly and most helpful to a couple of wandering Yanks. I have no connection other than an interest in WW II history and the sacrifices of the "greatest generation". One of my favorite movies is "Twelve O'clock High" - - so I had to visit Lavenham when the oportunity came along. A child hood friend was killed in the 8th, and is buried near Cambridge. I love England and hope I can go back some day.

| Comments: | Great site! My father was a tail gunner on a B-17 named "Mag the Hag, 2nd". His aircraft was shot down over Merseburg, Ger. on 13 Sept. 1944. He, along with all but one of his fellow crew were KIA. The pilot was named Harry Eck. I would appreciate any information available.

| Comments: | The Following is My Great Uncle's Story
Harry Warren Bachus I was attending Auburn University, back when it was known as Alabama Polytechnic Institute when recruiters from the Army Air Corps came to the school to recruit for candidates for pilot training. I eagerly signed on for training and attended bomber pilot school in Columbus, Mississippi. Nine of us graduated with the distinction of twin engine fighter pilot. The Army Air Corps told us we received that rating because we didn't like to fly straight and level, instead preferring rolls and upside down flying. During this phase of World War II (1942-1943) a significant number of our bombers were getting shot down so our whole squadron was sent to Salt Lake City where they were building a pool of pilots and crew members. This was where I first met our six crew members and we were transferred to a B-17 bomber training school in Ardmore, Oklahoma where we met the remaining three officers in our crew. After training a few months, we transferred to England to the 95th Bomb Group and the 336 Bomb Squadron. On the mission we got shot down, our target was in Leipzig, Germany. We were shot down by flak. We had two engines shot out and the bomb bay was damaged. We released our remaining bombs after two passes over the target in an attempt to stay airborne. We slowly made our way back to Holland at 7,700 feet at 110 miles per hour but we ran out of fuel before we could reach a friendly destination. Interestingly, we had some remaining fuel but our fuel transfer system was blown out of our plane along with the bomb bay. After I bailed out and once on the ground, I evaded for a short time in the underground. However, I was captured wearing civilian clothes by the Gestopo and SS and, as a result, was put in the Belsen Concentration Camp (now know as Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp). A German pilot came in with Hopwood, our radio operator who was still in his uniform and injured. Hopwood identified me as his pilot so the German Pilot reached down, while I lay beaten on the dirt floor, and patted me on the back and said, "Everything will be alright. I'm going to get you two out of here." I passed out after that, but I feel certain that he never allowed anyone else to beat me again. We could hear him shouting from downstairs and I later asked him what he was saying. I was told that he told my guards that they had better fix us a bed to lie down on and that we were his prisoners, not theirs. Either that same day or the next, we were put on a train with the German pilot and were taken to Frankfort, where he told us we would be interrogated. He told us that the Geneva Convention required only that we respond with our name, rank and serial number. Of course, we were already aware of that requirement. He told us the Gestapo told him that up to that point I had, in fact, only provided my name, rank and serial number. After the interrogation I lost track of Hopwood and never knew where they sent him. After nearly a week on bread and water, I was sent from Stalag Luft III on the other side of Berlin in Sagan, Germany (East-Southeast of Berlin), to the Center Compound where we were later joined by General Vanaman. General Vanaman was the Air Attache to Germany before the War so all the senior German Officers knew him. General Goehring and a few other high level Nazis came to visit him but he would only ask them to leave. After a few months there, the Russian Army got close so the Germans marched us across Germany to Stalag 7 at Mooseburg, Germany. After a few months we were liberated by General Patton's 3rd Army. This is the same prison camp mentioned in the story written in Stars and Stripes about the Candy Bomber, with me having dropped candy after the Berlin Airlift (Vittles Operation). There was a book written a few years ago with one individual claiming to be the 'Candy Bomber' but in reality, there were several of us. This was after my transfer to US Airforce Europe (USAFE) Headquarters, Weisbaden, Germany. I was stationed at Fasburg, Germany in North part of the country not too far from where the Belsen Concentration Camp was located, and rather than returning to the US like everyone else, I was requested to be transferred to Weisbaden. The reason I came back to Germany is that, following the end of the war, I became a test pilot and volunteered to go back to Germany and fly during the Berlin Airlift. - Back to Top |

I am interested in contacting anyone who may have flown with or knew my grandfather. One of my favorite pieces of memoralbilia is a certificate he recieved after completing his 35th mission officially inducting him into "The Lucky Bastards Club"! Im sure there many of you Lucky Bastards out there, but who could be luckier than the families and descendants of these men who wouldnt be here today if it werent for not only there survival but also there sacrifice. |

| Comments: | My husband was in WWII, he was in the 448th Bomb Group 714th Sq. and station in England. We made two trips to
England for WWII Reunions and the people there were so wonderful, made us feel right at home, I will never forget it. He will be 88 years old in Dec. and can you about each and every mission he made. It is only him and Benjamin (Jazz) Franklin left in his group. He lost Frank Gibson and Julius Rebels and R.T.Collins. Have lots of WWII pictures if any one is interested. A great site, keep up the great work. |
