Comments:Thanks for the bio on POP Mechanix. I worked with them in Townsville Australia in the early 80's when they were know as NZ Pop.
The Ritz aired on Countdown and should have gone further.
The song Cockroaches was written after their experience in a house in Townsville

Comments:Can't wait, I went to see BRF at the Waikiwi tavern in Invercargill, was 1 of a crowd of 5, the others being 2 of my bro's, 1 of their girlfriends and a friend. We ended up drinking with the band between sets. I was about 16-17 at the time (gotta love big bro's that'll lend you their birth cert) and was blown away. After wearing out the 45 of Turn of the Century and Song of the Hairless Apes I never thought I'd ever get to hear them again so what a relief to stumble across Failsafe Records. Roll on June.

Comments:thanks for the positive reminders to get the BRF discs done. see the news section for an update on how this lot is coming along. Lots of work is being put into it to make it a bloody good disc (actually 2 cds now instead of the originally planned 3 discs). Fear not, and thanks for keeping on my case about this. estimated time of arrival is now mid september (fingers crossed)

Comments:Oh My God!!! I have been extolling the virtues of the simply transcendental 'BRF' to anyone who would listen for the last 25 years! PLEASE get this CD out as soon as is humanly or superhumanly possible. I live in California now. How do I purchase this CD and literally ANYTHING by the Birch brothers?!?!? I am 43 years old, but simply salivating over this news. Incidentally, I came to this website by googling 'BRF', so there you are. Please, please get back to me!!!!!!

the music is all mastered and ready to go for that and the 2 live discs. The gladstone disc is amazing and has a bunch of tracks that were never recorded.
The hold up is with the liner notes as I feel its really important that these discs represent the band accurately. Dan and jono are presently working on these as well as artwork.
sorry for the delay on this. we has ment to have it out a couple of months back but we also want it to be right. thanks for your interest, and keep pestering us.

Second Are there any plans to rerelease "Four stars" the Wellington various artists compilation from 1981 "Sausage records" - Life in the Fridge Exists, Beat Rhythm Fashion, Wallsockets and Naked Spots Dance?

Thanks in advance,
Steven

Comments:Hi Rob,

Every year or so I've rung up James at Jayrem records and given him some gentle hassle about getting hold of anything by Beat Rhythm Fashion, as he foolishly admitted to me once that he thought he had the original tapes kicking around somewhere. Every year, he's been too busy to do anything about it. So, while impotently trying to track down a contact for Nino Birch, imagine my surprise when your site comes up with the comment that you're cd-ifying their stuff! Couldn't believe it! Please let me know when you've got the albums ready to buy. I'd dearly love to get hold of Beings Rest Finally, now that I've finally got hold of Turn Of The Century (cheers for the download)... well done, and sterling effort on getting some of this classic New Zealand music out there again.

Question: I used to knock around with the NRA guys up in Auckland (and by extension, the Chicks) and the other (non-Rex-Visible) guitarist, Eddie Chambers, disappeared over to New York, and used to record along with Joost under the moniker of Nemesis Dub Systems... I was wondering if youz guys had any connections that might know what ever happened to young Eddiwardo...

Regards,

Thanks for the kind words.
to your questions - we were trying to do a live disc and a studio disc and had ok'd it with dylan at Flying nun. it was all go, just a matter of getting the masters from the archive.
then after 4 months of delays I got a mildly stern pull the plug email informing me that they felt those recordings were their ball to play with, and even though they did not want to play with them they didn't want anyone else to either. Both the band and myself are very unhappy with this attitude as all we want to do is bring the music to those who know, love and appreciate it. We shouldn't have been surprised though as Flying nun is nothing but the name of a once great record label, its merely a pawn in the rupert murdock empire now, ie no indie cred. That said we don't hold any grudges, we're just dissapointed.

We're really happy with the live recordings and that we could bring such a big collection of the bands work through. We did a gig in may and will be doing more. there are new recordings under way and new material in the pipe line. thanks for the msg and Keep that positive support going, it really helps.

Cheers

rob

Comments:Hi Failsafe,

I was up from Dunedin visiting Chch at Queens Birthday weekend and just about pissed my pants with excitement when I saw the Children's Hour cd in the window at Galaxy Records.
I couldn't bloody believe it - a Children's Hour cd! At last ! I presumed it was a FN comp of the stuff they did for them, but I was proved wrong.

CH's Flesh ep is probably the FN item I play the most and never thought I'd see a CH cd.
Also, I was too young to CH live, so the new cd works as a double treat - a comp of some truly classic, timeless songs and an idea of how good they must've been live.
Chris Matthews' sleeve notes are really good as well (though it was the Doublehappy's, Wayne Elsey's subsequent band, not The Stones that were on the Looney Tour with CH, The Chills and The Expendables).

Some questions:

Why were you not able to release the studio stuff ? (are FN not allowing you access ?)

Did Chris M and F/safe prefer the live stuff, instead ? What gives ?

Next time I spot Chris Matthews in town, I'll have to pat him on the back.
What a great cd, better late than never.

Cheers, Grant.

Comments:Hi Rob, Great site - well done. Man, thats a lot of ringing strings you've captured here!
Like the downloads too, I myself didn't have a copy of Tanker's (I'll need a RAT and a Hotcake for this) "Sinker", prior to stumbling across the domain, so ta for that. And the wonderful 147 Swordfish...ahhh
Hope you are well.
