| Comments: | I viewed you cookbook comments about the 'Hom Comfort Cookbook, by; The Wrought Iron Range Company founded in 1864. Well, going thru one of my friends cookbook collections; I came across one also. So, the question is when was it written? And how do I find out? Right?? Unfortunately, the front cover of this one is missing. But, it does have a considerable amount of information on the first couple of pages are quit explicit n the company it self. It say, 'It's been in business for over 80-year's. So, maybe this a later dated book? Great recipe's and other home remedies. It's in poor shape but, if I can be of help let me know and I'll see if I can get a copy made for you. sincerely, trish smith-(sorry-so-sloppy) |

| Comments: | My Great Grandfather, John Henry Schaumburg, came to the Alva, Woods Co., area from Bison, La Crosse, Rush Co., Ks. in 1894 to make the rush in the Cherokee Outlet. The home place was a mile south and six miles east of Alva. My granddad was born in a dugout Feb. 10th, 1895. My Uncle Lewis Schaumburg was born in Jan. 1915. Aunt Vivian, December of 1916 and my late mother, Marietta, February 1st, 1919. My cousin, once removed, William Schaumburg lived and farmed in the Alva area for many years. He was related to Brad Ferris (an early Chief of Police) in Alva. I still have names and addresses of all of my mother's friends (probaably all gone now) and the names of witnesses on the final papers for the home place. I'm sure glad I remembered all of the stories of early farming with mules, threshing crews, getting stuck in the Salt Fork of the Arkansas, etc. Mom graduated from high school in town in 1935, (the same year that Will Rogers and Wiley Post were killed in Alaska). |

| Comments: | It is so good to see some of the history of NW Ok. I was born and raised in Alva. My Grandfather Leory Hackler, owned Alva Roller Mills from the early sixties. I still have the keys. The building has fallen into county hands due to taxes. My grandfather tried to give it to them for years. Due to the asbestos cleanup costs the county has never done anything with it. Their is still some stuff from the old mill in the building. Vandels have been very hard on the old structure. I am in search of any old pictures of the structure Outside and inside. I find Alva's History very fascinating. Thank you for your time. Brian Wallis |

We also know that Charles Thompson and a brother in law, whom we do not know his name, were going to make the Land Run but Charles backed out. | Comments: | Thank you for an interesting site. Very tragic death of Mildred Reynolds... Speculation is of course a little false as decisive information may be known to law enforcement but not the public. Although certainly appearing suspicious, definite proof of murder, which one would expect to find, is missing; and proclaimed evidence - blows to her head and shoulders, "criminal" (or attempted) assault, tyre tracks of another vehicle forcing her off the road - remain unproven on further examination. Her actions strike me as more consistent with a freak accident than with murder. Mildred Reynolds could have been taken ill and attempted to turn back to Alva, making a 3-point turn far too fast - if she momentarily fainted her foot would be a dead weight on the accelerator. She could have resued her bag, bleeding a little from striking her face on the windscreen or steering wheel, lost a shoe, then treurned to her car as brake fluid exploded. Were there further developments in the following half century? |

| Comments: | I was facinated by the article on Pine Valley, Oklahoma. I was born in Pine Valley on July 24, 1932 to Cecil and Hazel Hinkle. My dad and grandfather worked for Dierks Lumber and Coal Company as did my mother's brothers. My grandad on my mother's side was Hugh (Pa)Harrison who served as the town marshall when I was young. I remember him letting us go inside the concrete jail house to see what it was like to be locked up. I started school at Pine Valley but our family moved to Honobia before going to Dierks Arkansas. My dad was a logger and operated a catapillar. We lived there until 1941 when we moved to Oregon. My grandad, Pa Harrison and Ma lived in the old post office when the town was shut down and oversaw some of the dismanteling operations. I remember some of the name listed in the article such a McAdams, Rabb, Woodell. The images of the hotel, movie theatre, Big Store, Ice Plant and Cracklin' building remain in my mind to this day. My uncle David Harrison worked in the Drug Store and my uncle Clarence Hinkle was the butcher in the meat department. Many other things and people are in my memory but I just wanted to respond. |

| Comments: | I grew up in Mt. Pine, AR in the '50s. Mr. Woodell was still the store manager and used to give me a nickel every time my Mom took me to the store. One of the families that lived in the really "big" houses was the Hopsons. My next door neighbor was Ruben Smith, a sawyer. My Dad was a draftsman/engineer type and I got to go to the mill with him a lot. Watching the carriage go back and forth with a guy riding it was a highlight. When I was 18 and 19 I had summer jobs in the rework plant. I pulled sticks out of the lumber stack as the machine operator fed the boards into the saw that cut off the excess on the sides of the boards. This article brought back a lot of memories. BTW, I am now an Okie in OKC. |

| Comments: | My Grandmother (Ollie Allen) moved to Pine Valley about 1924-25. She moved there so her son (Leonard Allen) could work in the saw mill. Her husband abandend them with no means of support. She had three children, the youngest of which was my Dad (Franklin Allen). My Dad was born in 1920. He only went to the third grade (at Pine Valley) and quit due to a nervous stuttering problem he had. He spent most of his time with dogs hunting for rabbits, squirrels, or anything else he could find to put meat on the table. They were very poor. My Dad finally hitched a train when he was 11, and when to Oklahoma City to work in the glass business with his uncles. While the times were hard, my Dad always talked about the good times they had at Pine Valley. It was one of the special things he talked about when I was growing up. |

| Comments: | I need to find the grave of Lester Smith. He was the brother of my grandfather Charlie Eugene Smith. His father was named Thomas Byron Smith, married to Alma Ester Handy, and may have been involved in the Cherokee Strip land run. Their children were Charlie, George, Floyd, Sidney, Lester, Clarence, Inez and Elsie. Lester died in Agusta, OK January 24, 1902 and is buried in Eagle Chief cemetery. I'm thinking or hoping there may be land claims filed by Thomas Smith in Alva or Enid for land around Carmen/Agusta. They all lived mainly in Waugegan, IL all their lives, but around 1900 they can to western OK until Lester died, then they all moved back to IL. Maybe these "city folk" couldn't handle teh rough land. Like to find land records of where they lived exactly around Carmen or Agusta, any newspaper obit, paper trails and what caused Lester's death. Any info from anyone about this Smith family will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

| Comments: | I am hoping that some of the people you mentioned, may be related to me. Ted White (if it is the same family) had 2 or 3 other brothers; Elbert, James, and maybe John? Their father worked in sawmills. Ted's father, they called General. Ted's mother was Naomi Maddox/White who later remarried. Two of the Graham brothers married into our family. Does this sound familiar? If this is the same family, do you have any additional information on what happened to General White (Ted's father) or Ted's little brother James Wesley White? |

| Comments: | My grandmother Laura "Ted" Neihart was born and raised in Beaver co. before moving to Missouri. My great-grandfather was Wallace "Emory" Neihart. I am very interested in my family history, and the history of Beaver co. If anyone has any information on the Neihart or Brown families I would greatly appreciate it. Grandma is gone now as are all of her siblings and my father. I always loved as a child visiting Oklahoma and her old home place, which I believe is now owned by the bar-b ranch. The stories I heard about places such as Slapout and Ivanhoe are precious memories to me, and I would love to know more. I do have one volume of the history of beaver county but I do not have both. Are there any other books available? Please Help if you can. Sincerely, Carolyn Barker Loane ElDorado Springs, Mo |

In that book they frequently mentioned "The Castle On The Hill" so I went to the Internet and found your web site. May I have permission to place in my Beagley family history book the two pictures of the Castle before and after the fire that were on your web site? Also the paragraph beginning with "It concerns the burning of "The Castle on the Hill"...... Also, the paragraph: "[The following information is from the book Alva, Oklahoma First 100-years....etc. and "Sleeping Students Trapped in Room...." Thank you |

| Comments: | Hi, Are you still running this site? I need to talk to someone about early OK history. My grandparents were married in CA in 1880, but somehow ended up in OK prior to 1897, when my mother was born in "Garfield County", maybe Alva..her brother was born in 1900 in Major, OK. Her sister, married to a Shroyer was in Alva. My mother along with her mother returned to CA by the 1910 census were back in Sonoma County, where a lot of my ancestors were located. Mymother was orphaned in 1914 and returned to OK to live with her sisters family. These are the family members and what I know from Census info, etc. Charles Bruncley Nelson Virginia Catherine Smith (Nelson)b: 1860, IL m: Charles Nelson 1880 in CA (Charles & Virginia are my maternal grandparents)1900 census had family in Crowlly Woods, OK with 3 childred, including Ema(sic)Clarence born after census. Emma Bernice Nelson b: 14 Apr.1897 Wilcox, Garfield Co.,OK d: Fresno, CA 1992 (MY MOTHER) Emma Bernice married Ira Floyd, maybe in Anthoney, KS abt 1917, They had a son Johnny in abt 1918. By 1920 Emma was in Co, and so were the Floyd grandparents, no sign of Ira. It can be assumed that se left Johnny with grandparents and returned to CA, where she married George Huxtable 7 Sept 1921. Son Born Dec 1921 wasprob. Floyd, but raided as George Robert Huxtable. I was born 12 years later. Clarence Oscar Nelson Brother of Emma) Henry Oscar Shroyer Buelah Marie Nelson (Shroyer)10 Apr. 1884-3 Set 1950,d: Dayville,OR Alva, OK has also been mentioned, so I know they were there, why? How did they get there from CA? How did Emma, Clarence and their mother get back to CA? So many counties were renamed that I am lost. Can you recommend a book on OK history ca 1897-1910? Point me in a direction, please. Land records have not helped me. |

He traveled with a group of salesmen and their wives throughout the New England States selling the stoves to farm folks. It was a very successful two years. Dad sold a grea many of the ranges. They had a small model the carried about along with one of the iron stove lids that was reputed to be unbreakable and indeed it was. A big swede challanged him one day and said he could break it if given the chance. Dad told him to go ahead and try. The man placed it on a heavy chopping block and came down on it with a big post maul. It flipped way up in the air, spun around and never broke. The man bought one immediately and paid cash;. There are many good stories relating to the WIRC |

| Comments: | I would very much appreciate any assistance you can offer in regard to the Heuett family, members of which received land patents in Woodward County, Oklahoma in 1910 and 1911. The family apparently lived there only a brief period as they are found in Lamar County, Colorado census records in 1920. Could you shed light on why they came to the county and why they moved? The father was Edwin Wilson Heuett B 1844 in Virginia. He (and his wife, Maria Elizabeth Page, b 1852, Iowa,) received Woodward Land Patent #10811 on June 29, 1911. The 1910 census reflects their residence as Texas County, Oklahoma. Their son Arthur b. 1885 in Missouri also lived in Texas County in 1910 and married his wife Sarah Ella Hargrove b. 1891 Indiana, in Texas County in 1908. His Land Patent in Woodward County #20613 is dated June 12, 1911. Another son, Aden b. 1883, Missouri, lived in Driftwood, Woods County, in 1910, with his wife Nellie Allice Appel b. 1885 in Kansas. Aden’s Land Patent was Woodward #10809 dated February 7, 1910. Hiram b 1878 in Missouri and his wife Bertha Crist b. 1884 in Missouri lived in Driftwood in 1910 and their patent was Woodward #10994. The 1910 census reflects that Claude b 1887 in Missouri lived in Frizlin Township (his wife Gail Majors lived with her parents in Driftwood also in 1910). 1910 census also lists Edwin and Marie’s daughters: Mable b 1890, Rose b. 1893, and Irene b 1896, who were all born in Missouri, living together in a separate residence in Driftwood. Finally, another daughter, Elsie b. 1881 in Missouri, lived with her husband Joseph Vanwey. |

| Comments: | I'm Jeanne Winn, formerly Vincent, from Freedom, OK. I was born in the Freedom hospital 8-7-1944. My parents are Loyd Vincent & Ina (Culver) Vincent. They were born & raised in the Freedom community too. We lived on the Shadid farm east of Freedom until I was about 10 years old. Then we moved to town. I have a sister, Sherry Beagley, that was born 7-7-1942. We both attended & graduated from Freedom High School. My maternal grandparents were Clarence & Jennie (Arndt) Culver & paternal were Garret Ray & Goldie (Clothier) Vincent. Maternal great grandparents were Dave & Pearl (Smith) Arndt. Since retiring, I now live North of HW 64 on Cora road near the Whitehorse Cemetery with husband Dudley. It's great to be back in the country after careers in Enid, OKC & Tulsa. I enjoyed your site & will continue to visit. |
