Hello, I am pleased to have found your site. I live in Western Australia & have been trying to source origins of our name. A lady (whom I knew of through an Aunt), went to England in the late 80'-early 90's & traced our name through the British National Archives & Church records to find that the variations of our name all appear to stem from a Qua(r)terma(i)n(e)whom went to England to serve as a Knight under King Richard I. The name apparently is an evolution of a French word meaning 4 (Quarter/Quarta)hands (main). This lady also found that in Medieval France people's illiteracy gave rise to several spellings of this with the oldest variation being "Katryman". I am trying to discover any links to any variations of our name in France preceeding King Richard I. When/if I manage to locate this lady I hope to be able to obtain as much info as possible from her studies. As our name has been traced back about 900 years it would be great to follow back even further into the French side. | |
