I only know My Sharona from the Knack but was just surfing the net. I started with looking into The Walled Lake Casino to see if I could find out if there was arson involved when it burned on Christmas 1965. Then I wandered onto a site on Detroit area bands and was reading about Sky. I noticed you are a bass player. As a musician (bass player) I think the world opened up for me with My Sharona. I was in Colorado Springs in the summer of 1980 and had been hanging out a Sir Sid's to hear disco bands. They we're all so technicaly proficient, you know, the bass players all slapping the strings? Disco was a nightmare for me because I played bass with a pick. Then suddenly this one polished band from somewhere in Kansas I think broke into an excellent verion of My Sharona. I wish I could think of the name of that band, but I know they loved Colorado so much they bought their own bar in Colorado Springs, moved there, and became the house band in '81. The customers at Sir Sid's really loved those guys and so became their social circle. Beautiful Girls. Wild. Anyway, at their own bar they did not cover any Disco Songs. The 80's had arrived. The next thing I heard was U2 at a party in my dorm in Boulder and the 80's we're born for me. But just this last summer I played bass for the first time in five years with some mates at The Moose Lodge in Fremont, MI. Big breakthrough for me as I since figured out how to play with my fingers!!! (over the recent years). So once this summer has been the only gig in my long life where I played bass with my fingers. It sounded and felt sooo good!! Some guy got up on stage and wanted to sing Ramblin' Gamblin Man, so I did that with my fingers and sang one of the harmonies. Everyone in the room seemed stunned, but it was probably the singer. I don't know. But it was really really strong. You have to use your fingers for Seger. Actually it took me until half way through the second set do put the pick down. I was a little nervous being a pick kind-of guy and playing for the first time in over five years. That turned out OK. Early on we had to play three-piece and did a great Message In A Bottle (which I think will remain a pick-bass song). But with the fingers and Seger I've come full circle from My Sharona, don't you think??. I could do Classic Rock now! Like Mel from Grand Funk? |

| Comments: | Loved The Knack back in the day... rediscovered you guys when I moved everything on to my iPod years ago. I listen to you regularly now, going through Knack phases periodically and always come to the same conclusion: Doug F. is one of the best songwriters I've ever heard, and the Knack plays the sh*t out of these tunes! Lots of changes to follow the song moods... guitar solos that *add* to the emotion, drums that sounded simple (until I tried to learn the parts), etc. Anyway, I hope you're very proud of your work and contributions to the world. You've accomplished more and given more than, stastically speaking, everyone.
So from a fan to the band, thank you for the great music. The Knack will always be an indelible link back to some of my best times ever, but the songs are resonating today today as well (and getting imprinted with new memories every year). | Comments: | I wore the grooves out of your first three albums! Although I still have a sealed copy of "Round Trip". It's great to be able to still listen to your songs today and they are fresh,powerful, and timeless. It's funny when you are young and you think you know what a song means. Ad some years and they take on a far better meaning! Also had a band of my own and you guys were a major influence on the style, lyrics and stage presence. (It worked for three albums). I even remember back in the day sending in for info on the "The Knack Fan Club" but I never heard back. I almost had the chance to see you twice.....once around '81......my mom found the single cover for My Sharona and nixed that idea.....I was maybe 10 at the time. Second attempt was Chicago in 2000 but of course didn't get to the show on time. Oh well. I was so happy to read about your guitar collection in Vintage Guitar magazine.
