It was at one of your friend's house where he had an old time movie theatre set up in his basement .. with popcorn and all. That trip left quite an impression with me ... thank you. Comments:Hi Mr. Smith! I am Chris' friend from Westfield, IN. We have been long time friends and I love your daughter dearly! She is a lifetime pal! I will never forget the day that she told me that "you were the guy" that hosted a show that I grew up watching! When movies were movies, was a regular thing for me and my mother. We SO enjoyed that. There will never be another show like it and my fondest movie memories were watching that with mom. I wish they would do it again and re-run it. I think it would get a HUGE audience! many of us would appreciate that "blast form the past" and all of those wonderful movies! There will never be movies like the ones that we all enjoyed as much as we did, will there Mr. Smith? My personal favorite was "The Heiress" with Olivia de Havilland. The BEST! Thank you for your contribution to some of the best times of my life Carolyn Earl Gentner

I thought it was also on in the late 1960s, but you said you started it in 1971. The show played the classics of the 1930s and 1940s. Did the show originate in Indiana with you? The "series" had a great opening theme song, that I never learned the name of. Could you please send me an email with the name of that theme song? There were no words. It was an upbeat tune with classical instruments, and may have been a semi-march. Thanks. I recently suggested to MeTV that they should re-invent that very show.

Comments:I've just discovered your website.... My story is a long one...but here goes as short a possible.. I've collected Movie Music for 35 years...I'm now 80 years old.. Donated my collection to San Diego State University 12 years ago... I'm working on getting it, plus other donations, into working order... we hope to have it all listed soon.... There must be 10,000 sheets, possibly more, in the Movie Music and Silent Movie Collection ... There are holes in the collection, but now that I've found you maybe you will be able to fill in some of those holes..... I have also worked on the UCLA collection in the 1980's with Dr. David Morton.... I hope that I hear from you..... The reason why I started to collect Sheet Music is to keep the music of my Parents, Grandparents and the Music of my time period, together so that all that wonderful music wouldn't be forgotten..... I loved going to the "Pictures" in England, when I was a youngster during WW2, it was such a joy to sit there and watch those Wonderful musicals with that wonderful, singable, music... Those were the days.... Vince If you would care to read about me, SDSU gave me a site...just put in my Name..Vince Meades...

Comments:Dave Smith: Many years ago you got me started in broadcasting at WISH-TV in that wonderful year of 1960. Beginning as a part-time floorman I worked my way up to become the arms of Selwyn's "Handy Devine," with special thanks also to Ray Sparenberg. From then on I knew I was on the way up. Soon becoming a cameraman, and finally with your support, the first producer-director of the evening news in the new building up the street from the old piano store studios in the Reddick Building. Winning the CASPER award for a documentary you set me up with I was hired away by WLW-I TV where I directed the Don Melvoin Show, then their evening news. From there, with the help of Greg Bowler, I went to work for WOSU-TV in Columbus, worked on my PH.D. at Ohio State, taught at the University of Georgia, then spent some twenty years teaching video & film at Ohio State. And to think it all began with Handy Devine & Dave Smith . . . a belated but heartfelt thanks (and special regards to Handy.

Best of luck on any writing with Garbo, Rathbone, Herbert Marshall and "classical cinema". Sincerly, Scott Lord

He spoke in my town, Columbus, Indiana last week at the library. Besides the embarrasing techincal snafu by the library staff trying to set up the Power Point, it was a very enjoyable talk by Mr. Smith about Hoosiers in Hollywood. He knows hows to tell interesting stories about actors and it's obvious he has done his research. I sure learned some new things!

They are all about special effects now, not about the story.

It's not a photo, it's actually a coloured sketch or painting. Either way, it says TV Guide Cover Portrait and is stamped as such on the back with 1985 on it. Would you have any idea what it's worth? It's in very good condition. Thank you very much. Your collection is nice. :)

I'm from Northwest In, or as we like to call it "The Region". I absolutely love James Dean, but it was cool to see who else was from here. I was really surprised to see learn Steve McQueen was too. In the movie section though, the movie Now & Then (1995) was based in the town of Shelby, Indiana and was not included. I'm not sure where it was filmed, however.

I grew up in Naptown (remember when people used to call it that?), and even as a kid I knew there was something special going on with the programming at WISH. Didn't know until much later that you were to thank for airing those great films, although you made a personal impression as the host for "When Movies were Movies". Your extra commentary lifted each film even higher, but lord the late showtimes turned me into a lifelong nightowl. Congratulations for converting a young impressionable mind into a certifiable movie geek. (What kid today would get a dose of the brief career of LaIrD cReGaR?!) A few of those movies have proved to be impossible to find ever since I saw them lo so many years ago on Channel 8. Sorry I had to miss your book signing yesterday. Thanks again.

I also loved the detailed entry Mr. Smith gave for actress Joyce DeWitt, whom I have had a crush on since I was only a 14 year old boy! (Of interest--Joyce DeWitt's former BSU roommate, Deborah Hightshue, was my English and French teacher at Edinburgh Community High School in Edinburgh, Indiana!) I was recently diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome and would be interested in writing a Broadway play about Joyce DeWitt.

Greenfield resident John Kleiman wrote the screenplay and produced the movie. A collector's edition DVD is currently being sold to help raise money for the renovation of the Village Theatre in downtown Greenfield, which opened in 1946 as the Weil Theater. The Hancock County Visitors Bureau hopes to reopen the theater in October, 2005, as an arts and cultural center.

Comments:Hello, I as a member of the Industry for over 27 years can appreciate this site. I is the truth in those days you had producers , directors and writers that put all of the heart and soul into what they were creating. Today it is about a quick buck and that's about it in the percentage of HollyWood. The actors, some if you want to relate to them as stars are very plastic people. Money is theonly thing that matters not quality or respect of the parts. Just give me my 20 Million and 15 body gaurds and some nose candy, and ignorance and arrogance, that's a star today. It is a disgrace. That's why public opinion and respect for the industry is collapsing, a little at a time. You have no decent people in the top spots any more , either inherited or related not talent or quality. Just crank them out and load my pockets. Sad, there still may be hope, someday. You have a great day.

Favorite Actors include Gary Cooper, Clark Gable and John Barrymore and Actresses would be Barbara Stanwyck, Clara Bow, Greta Garbo, Jean Harlow, Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. Now, these folks had some class and knew how to ACT! Not like the drivel being produced today! Please keep me in mind for any Cooper or Stanwyck items from the early days, late 20's to 30's and for anything at all on John Barrymore!

Comments:Thank You. Thank You. Thank You. I am taking a graduate-level film studies class at Univesity of Indianapolis where I will complete the usual 12-page scholarly paper and a 5-minute oral report. Being a Hoosier through and through, my first interest was to report on Hoosier Directors. I'm a Franklin College grad, and I've had the wondeful opportunity to attend the Heartland Film Festival events for the past four years where I've dined next to Robert Wise, Angelo Pizzo, and other Hoosiers in the film world. This year I attended a great session with William and Scott Bindley where the talked about their grand adventures making Madison. But, when I began my research on Indiana directors...no one knew where I could find anything for weeks. Each likely suspect in Indiana I called was a dead end except to say that if I completed my paper they would love to have access to it. I was a little excited as an English student and thought I might turn this paper into a book for Indiana, but I'm always a big proponent of "There's nothing new under the sun." So, am glad to have found your Web site--will open the eyes of my fellow students and professor with wonderful and properly cited information from your Web site--and hope that as soon as you get your Hoosiers in Hollywood book completed that you share it with several places in Indiana. I will be happy to share the list of organizations I've contacted with you if you are interested. Again, THANKS

She went to Northside High School in Muncie and graduated from Ball State in about 1990 or so. She has been in Spike Lee's MO BETTER BLUES, TALES OF THE CITY, and I have seen her in Vanity Fair Magazine as well. She certainly should be included in that section. Thanks . Brad Rickel

Comments:I really enjoy seeing and reading about the old movies as well as what is new and exciting. I was born in 1938 and my early memories are my great Mom and Dad, always young at heart and in love, listening to the music and radio shows. Then it was off to the Marines for my Dad, in early 1943 to San Diego, Mom soon followed, got a job in a bomber factory. She soon came back for me and we listened to the radio and sang all the way, in our 38 Ford. The movies became my baby- sitter, since they kept me entertained while Mom and Dad could spend some precious moments together. Thus became the movies as my second love. Thanks for bringing back the memories again. Thanks, Phil

Thanks to it (and you) I was introduced to a really great era in movie-making. I was born in 1956 in Anderson and missed the "Golden Age Of Movies," but thanks to you and my late parents, I was treated to literally hundreds of great movies. My favorite genre are the "Cops 'N Robbers" movies, like: "Where The Sidewalk Ends," "The Petrified Forest," "Invisible Stripes," etc. Anyway, thanks for a great website.
