| Comments: | 1st Lt./Capt. William Porter Smyth (Smith is a common misspelling) Company G 35th Illinois Regiment. William P. Smyth was my great great grandfather on my mother's side of the family and I am trying to see what records might exist in Vandalia in relation to him both in civilian and military service. So far I have tracked down some information on him online from the muster records, the NPS Civil War Soldier System, and a few sites focused on the 35th with a segment on his specific service in the Civil War. I am a history major so my interest in genealogy and the military history of my family greatly interest me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

| Comments: | Salutations to all who search for their yesturyears! Isn't it exciting to stand on ground that you know your ancestors settled in years gone by. I was on the very ground that my ancestors, Hicks,Donaldson and Matthews; settled in 1829. Behind Little Hickory Church where many of my family members remember attending church sits Little Hickory Cemetary. How exciting it was to see the frame of the church still standing. Even more exciting was the cemetary that is cleared and well taken care of. We thank you most graciously for keeping the cemetary mowed. |

| Comments: | Jonathan W. Rogers married Caroline Klinsman on 5 Nov 1868, according to the Fayette County record on file at the County Court house in Vandalia. I have searched for both of them AFTER their marriage, using census reports, death records, etc. at Ancestry.com, and so far have come up empty handed. Caroline was listed as age 2 in the 1850 census for Brush Valley, Indiana County, PA living with her parents William and Salina (Esch) Klinsman. In the 1860 census for La Clede, Fayette Co, Illinois, she is listed as age 12, living with her parents and 4 siblings: Louisa, Jacob, Salina and William. But I have not found Caroline or her husband in any CENSUS record after 1860. If you have any clues on them after 1868, I would be very grateful. |

| Comments: | So glad to have found this site, thanks! I am trying to find information for my gr-gr-grandparents who lived in Ramsey, Il. abt. 1840-1850. They were George W. Hovey b. 1805 and his wife Nancy Pierce abt. 1820. I found them in the 1850 Fayette Co. census with their 5 children, but can't figure out what happened to them after that. Nancy was born in Illinois, so I am hoping to maybe locate her parents. Geo. and Nancy were married in 1841 in Shelby Co. So I am guessing she may be from that area. Any help would be deeply appreciated. Thank you! |

| Comments: | Heather Family: Hi, I'm looking for info about my great-grandmother, Lomey Heather (later married Rufus Glover). She was born in Vandalia, Illinois, in 1863 or 1864. She's in the 1880 census, with her family, in Mountain Township, Crawford Co., Arkansas. Her father is listed there as W.H. Heather (middle initial might be something besides "H"), born about 1830 in Indiana; mother is Harriet, born about 1835 in Illinois; children are Lomey, Thomas (born abt 1867), John (b abt 1871), Sarah (b abt 1873), and James (b abt 1879). All the children were born in Ill., except the youngest, who was born in Ark. There are two "boarders" living with them, of whom the husband was also born in Ill. (abt 1835), listed as "A. Browing" (could be Browning or Brown). Lomey's father, W.H(?)'s parents are listed as having been born in Tenn. (his father) and Kentucky (his mother). Lomey's mother's parents are listed as both born in Ill. Lomey married and had all her children in Ark., before her Glover family moved to Oklahoma (she died in 1936). I don't know what became of her parents or siblings, or who her parents' parents were. I hope someone knows more about them, and I'm glad I found this site. |
