Comments:Hello: I have been researching the travels of my family on the old Cumberland Trail. With help from relatives, it has been determined that I am related to the Olmstead line that traveled originally from New York state, and eventually settled in the Illinois counties of Coles, Cumberland, Christian, Bond, and Fayette. There is some mystery as to why my surname became Donaldson, so I need to do some research for both the Olmstead and Donaldson names in Fayette County to see what possible connections they may have.

Smyth was my great great grandfather on my mother's side of the family and I am trying to see what records might exist in Vandalia in relation to him both in civilian and military service. So far I have tracked down some information on him online from the muster records, the NPS Civil War Soldier System, and a few sites focused on the 35th with a segment on his specific service in the Civil War. I am a history major so my interest in genealogy and the military history of my family greatly interest me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Anna remarried 18 August 1859, St. Clair Co., IL, James Hill, Sr. When did Anna Arder Thompson Hill die, and where is she buried? She may be buried by her son:

Robert W. Thompson married Susan Caroline Varner, 23 Mar. 1867, St. Clair Co., IL. They lived in 1870, Kaskaskia Twp., Fayette Co., IL. They were in Pope Twp., Fayette Co. in 1880. Robert W. Thompson was a Civil War Veteran; he died 6 Feb. 1886, at the age of 38yrs. in Fayette Co., IL. Where is Robert W. Thompson buried; is his mother buried here also?

Robert's children: Anna, James Harvey, Mary Edna, Charles Hugh, Frederick G. & George/(Garfield?) Wendell Thompson.

Robert's wife, Susan Carolina Varner Thompson remarried to Francis "Frank" Brown, 7 April 1887, Fayette Co., IL; they had three children: Effie, John William, & Barbara A. Brown. Francis "Frank" Brown died 1 Sept. 1936 near Patoka, IL, but we do not know when Susan Caroline died, or where. When, and where, did Susan Caroline die,and where is she buried? Any information on these families will be appreciated. Thank you! Catherine Hill, spntosprno@clearwave.com

I was on the very ground that my ancestors, Hicks,Donaldson and Matthews; settled in 1829. Behind Little Hickory Church where many of my family members remember attending church sits Little Hickory Cemetary. How exciting it was to see the frame of the church still standing. Even more exciting was the cemetary that is cleared and well taken care of. We thank you most graciously for keeping the cemetary mowed.

Comments:Jonathan W. Rogers married Caroline Klinsman on 5 Nov 1868, according to the Fayette County record on file at the County Court house in Vandalia. I have searched for both of them AFTER their marriage, using census reports, death records, etc. at Ancestry.com, and so far have come up empty handed. Caroline was listed as age 2 in the 1850 census for Brush Valley, Indiana County, PA living with her parents William and Salina (Esch) Klinsman. In the 1860 census for La Clede, Fayette Co, Illinois, she is listed as age 12, living with her parents and 4 siblings: Louisa, Jacob, Salina and William. But I have not found Caroline or her husband in any CENSUS record after 1860. If you have any clues on them after 1868, I would be very grateful.

Nancy was born in Illinois, so I am hoping to maybe locate her parents. Geo. and Nancy were married in 1841 in Shelby Co. So I am guessing she may be from that area.
