Mort's Dock & RV Campground

Hello from Mort at Mort's Dock & RV Campground. Here's what is happening with fishing in my neck of the woods!

...

Sunday pm July 5 2009
The holiday weekend is about over but
what a weekend it was! The weather was
about as good as one could ask for with
mid to upper 70's and winds that stayed
from "walleye chop" to dead calm. The
walleye bite continued to improve as the
waters cleared up after last weeks blow.
While the action may not be like May-June
it is very good for July fishing on URL.
Some fish are still shallow (especially in
the evening) but many are being found a
little deeper. Trolling, drifting in 7-11'
or working structure like center bar, "the
rock" to the NE and in particular the rock
pile to the west were turning good numbers
of keeeper fish. We will see how long the
wind will continue to cooperate?! Fish on!!

* * * *

Friday am July 3 2009
The winds calmed a little more yesterday
and the fishing began to improve. While
the waters were still churned up people
were finding some active fish. Some got
limits in 8-9' water others found a bite
just outside the reeds in 5-6' depths. A
jig and minnow still working, but more
were trolling bright colors. If the wind
can cooperate the bite should continue
to pick up through the weekend. HAVE A
GREAT 4TH AND BE SAFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

* * * *

Thursday am July 2 2009
Yesterday was the first fishable day
around here after a four day blow! Of
course with the water churned up the
fishing was less than stellar. There
were a few boats that did ok but most
struggled to get enough for the fry
pan. If the forecast is correct for
some sunny days and the winds can stay
moderate through the upcoming weekend
the bite should pick up. Have a great
holiday weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

* * * *

Sunday am June 28 2009
SURF'S UP!!! The forecast for strong winds
was correct. Saturday am was fishable but
by noon the west winds started kicking up
and by mid afternoon were howling at 30 to
40+ mph. Same story for today but they may
start to go down a little by tonight then
10 to 20 mph forecast for Monday. The lake
surely will be stirred up so it will be
interesting to see how long it will take
for the walleye bite to pick back up!?!?
Before the storm fishing was slowing a bit
but many were having good luck with leeches
starting to out perform minnows. Keep an eye
on upcoming weather conditions and keep a
tight line!!

* * * *

Friday mid-day June 26 2009
The walleye bite remains strong out front
here on the south shore with many boats
already gone with limits. We had a windier
day yesterday which made fishing a little
tougher but today is very nice. Tomorrow
the winds may kick up again, we will see!
Fishermen are reporting having to sort out
quite a few smaller "eyes" to get their
keepers but that is a good problem to have.
We all know Mother Nature will take over
and the walleye will move deeper soon thus
making for slower action. We are still in
the 4-8 or 9' depths with a lot of fish
just outside the reeds especially in the
evenings. Have a great weekend and keep a
tight line!!!!

* * * *

Wednesday June 24 2009
Not much has changed since my report on
Sunday. The walleye bite remains very
strong here on the south shore. It is
still in 4 to 8-9' water or less. The
action off our dock (just 3+') yesterday
evening was very good. While there have
been a lot of 8 to 12-13" fish fishermen
are reporting limits of 14 to 19" "eyes".
It is nice to see a healthy population
of "up & comers" and with the new slot
(20-26" protected) it has taken pressure
off the smaller fish. Except for a rare
squall to chase fishermen off, the weather
has been holding very well. Fish on!!!!!!!

* * * *

Sunday June 21 2009
Happy Fathers's Day to all the Dad's out
there! The weather and the fishing just
doesn't get much better than the last 10
to 12 days here on Upper Redlake. "Crazy,
unbeleivable, insane, fantastic" are just
some of the adjectives fishermen have been
using to describe the walleye action right
out front here on the South shore. The bite
is still in 4 to 8-9' water. A couple slabs
here & there, some nice pike with a 42" the
largest reported. The south winds and warm
temps to stay a while longer, Fish On!!!!!!

* * * *

Thursday June 18 2009
I'm not used to seeing Upper Redlake this
calm for this long, I like it! The nice
weather has made for good fishing conditions
the last week now and the walleye continue
to cooperate. The bite has been strong on
the SE and south shores in particular in
6 to 9' water, many fish still being caught
in 4' or less also especially in the evening.
Jigging or trolling doesn't matter as most
all baits are working and the new slot is
helping people limit in short order!

* * * *

Tuesday am June 16 2009
It was a busy place here yesterday as
D-Day for the 17 to under 20" walleye
arrived with the new slot for Upper
Redlake. Most fishermen came in with
limits in one to two hours or less &
others caught-released many fish just
to enjoy the great fishing day (sunny,
warm w/light winds again). Sounds like
chances of rain later today but the SE
winds are to continue for a while.

* * * *

Monday am June 15 2009
Today the slot on walleye moves to 20-26"
so people are exited to be able to keep a
few 18 & 19" fish for a change. "The best
couple days of fishing we've ever had" &
"I don't think fishing could be any better"
were just some of the comments we heard as
people came off the lake this weekend. The
walleye were cooperating very well, some
nice pike and a few crappies were caught
along with an active "drum" bite made for
a lot of action. Looks like another great
day ahead today, then chances of rain on &
off Tu-We but temps staying in the 70's to
near 80 most all week-it's about time!!!!!

* * * *

Saturday am June 13 2009
The weather has been pretty nice the last
couple days and the winds have been light
at least managable. This has allowed most
fishermen to get out and enjoy a strong
walleye bite in 4-8' of water. Jigs or
trolling spinners w/minnow and even crank
baits all working. A few crappie coming in
but we need steady south winds for a few
days to pick up the bite here on this side.
Sounds like we may get that starting on
Sunday, we will see!

* * * *

Thursday am June 11 2009
The "light winds" forecast the last couple
days have been 10 to 15 mph out of the WNW
most of the time. This has made the fishing
a little more difficult. While some have
had good luck others are finding sheephead
more than walleye. The temps are to warm up
for the weekend so hopefully that means SW
winds will take over??!! While there have
been a few good crappie reports from the
north shore and even the south "rock humps"
the cool water temps have made for a quite
inconsistent bite pattern. We are running
out of time soon but if warmer days are in
store we may have a week or two for the
slabbers to be active. Most of the fish are
still shallow 4-8' and in the evening we
are still catching walleye and occaisionally
crappie off our dock in three feet or less!!

* * * *

Monday am June 8 2009
Guess you can't say wind from the east-
fishing the least on Upper Redlake this
time of year! The winds stayed light to
manageable out of the east all weekend
and the fishing was very good for most.
While some had trouble getting "keeper"
size fish the action on 12 to 20+ inch
"eyes" kept everyone happy. The bite on
the S to SE shores was from 4-9'. Jigs
or spinners w/minnow, even cranks were
working. The crappie were just one here
and there for most as the water stays
on the cool side. Just ONE WEEK from
today when the slot on walleye moves up
to 20-26" so people are excited!!

* * * *

Thursday June 4 2009
Same old story on the weather! One nice
day followed by a windy day. Same sort
of forecast for the next few days. The
weather Wednesday was great and so was
the fishing. While the morning started
slow (typical) the afternoon-evening
walleye bite took off on the SE and S
shores in 4-8' water. We fished off the
dock in the evening (3+' water) and had
plenty of action. First cast delivered
a 15" crappie, then walleyes and fresh
water drum (ok sheephead) all in all it
was fun! This shows that shallow is good.
Also the crappie have not all spawned yet
so should bite a while as water temps
slowly rise (58-60 degrees now). The rock
piles should produce if winds cooperate!!

* * * *

Wednesday am June 3 2009
It looks like nice day today after a
big blow from the north yesterday. We
can not seem to get two nice days in a
row without the wind howling. Tuesday
was a great day on the lake and the
walleye cooperated very well on the SE
and south shores in 4 to 8' water with
jig & minnow or trolling. Did not see
anyone hitting the rock humps for slabs
as people chased "eyes" exclusively. It
sounds like similar weather patterns on
the way for this weekend.

* * * *

Monday am June 1 2009
The winds were not kind to fishermen on
Upper Redlake this weekend keeping them
or chasing them off the lake Friday and
Saturday. Those willing to take a beating
out past the mouth of the Tamarac had good
action with a low percentage of "keeper"
size fish. When the winds did allow people
out here on the south end the bite was not
too bad with a higher "keeper" rate being
in the lake. Jig & minnow or spinnner rigs
with minnows working well, some gave the
edge to shiners but fatheads, even crawlers
were working as long as you were over fish.
With cool water temps the bite is still in
the 4 to 8 or 9' levels. We are still able
to catch "eyes" off our dock in three feet!
As the water temps slowly climb to about 60
degrees we are starting to see a few crappies
come off the rock humps out here, this may
yet improve if we get some warmer days to
get water temps near 65, guess we will see!!

* * * *

Saturday am May 30 2009
It sounds like most if not all of today
is going to be a blowout with strong NW
winds pounding whitecaps at us. The wind
held off much of yesterday so some were
able to get after the fish. With the lake
being churned up after Thursdays wind the
walleye bite was ok but not hot. It seems
the wind should switch to SE tonight so
most of the lake should be fishable by
Sunday. Guess we will see??!!

* * * *

Thursday May 28 2009
The weather has been up & down this week
thus so has the fishing. When winds can
cooperate the walleye are biting in 4 to
9' water. Still a couple crappies coming
in, some warmer days with light winds
would help for both "eyes" and "slabbers".
The weekend forecast sounds pretty good,
just a matter of what the winds will be
doing??!!

* * * *

Monday May 25 2009
HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY!!! While today looks
to be damp & dreary we had pretty nice
weather for much of Memorial Weekend.
While Sunday's walleye action was not
quite as good as Saturday's (at least
early in the day) the evening bite made
up for it. Many had good action along
the south shore especially Sat & Sun
evenings in 4 to 8' water. Trolling,
drifting or anchored with jigs or some
spinner baits tipped w/minnow were all
working it seemed. We saw a few crappie
coming in and quite a few pike of various
sizes. With warmer temps forecast next
weekend I think the south side here will
give up plenty of walleye and a few more
crappies may also show up. So let's hope
the winds can cooperate for a few days?!!

* * * *

Sunday am May 24 2009
It looks like a great day in store with
temps in the 70's, sunny & light winds.
The cool, windy start to yesterday made
for a slow bite early but then it began
to pick up nicely later in the day with
many limits of walleye coming in. Most
methods were working from trolling to
drift fishing in 4 to 9' feet out front
here to the SE shore. While today sounds
like the best day of the weekend it may
start getting wet by Monday so get out
and enjoy today!!!

UPPER REDLAKE FISHING REPORT

* * * *

Thursday May 21 2009
The weather has been up & down all week
and the winds cannot seem to lay down
for more than a half a day. This hasn't
made for the best of fishing, but when
the winds cooperate a little the walleye
have been biting. The forecast for this
Memorial Weekend doesn't sound too bad
so hopefully the winds can stay calmer
and allow people a good chance at having
a "fish fry". A calmer Upper Redlake may
produce some crappies also. Have a great
weekend a be sure to STAY SAFE!!!!!!!!!!

* * * *

Monday May 18 2009
The sun was out all day yesterday and
the winds stayed down so a lot of boats
headed out. The lake was quite churned
up after the hard blow Fr-Sa so the bite
was not as good as before the storm. It
seemed some boats had a slow bite while
others did fairly well. The walleye were
not cooperating great out front but some
hitting the SE shore had better luck. A
jig or spinner & minnow working best in
5 to 7 feet. Sounds like an up & down
weather pattern mid-week but the long
range sounds good for the Memorial!!!!!

* * * *

Saturday May 16 2009
Today looks like an all day blow from
the NW at 20-30+ mph. It will be mostly
river fishing perhaps a few out on the
far NE shore? Lake fishing was pretty
good yesterday until the rain and wind
moved in. Tomorrow sounds like offshore
winds here, also sunny & warmer so some
will get out before having to head home.
After this hard blow the am fishing may
not be as good as the afternoon? With
high water and hard NW winds it looks
like a few "adjustments" will be in order
on the docks early Sunday!!

* * * *

Thursday May 14 2009
The strong west winds showed up a 1/2
day later than forecast, so of course
they are sticking around longer also.
Winds are now supposed to start going
down mid-day today and hopefully warm
up from 32 degrees this am. It's to
be better tomorrow but Saturday sounds
suspect?! Fishing was good Mo-Tu but
no lake fishing yesterday or much today
the way it looks so hopefully fishermen
get a chance on the lake Friday am. The
river fishing should continue to be very
good for a while yet. They may be the
best opportunity for most the next couple
days?!

* * * *

Tuesday May 12 2009
With offshore winds and warmer temps
the walleye bite really picked up on
the south shore yesterday. Jigs or
spinners w/minnow in 5-6' water was
working. The SE shore was also doing
well on walleye, didn't here much on
crappie. It is to be offshore winds
today with some rain moving in, then
windy out of the west tomorrow before
maybe warming back up by the weekend.

UPPER REDLAKE FISHING REPORT

* * * *

Monday May 11 2009
The opener started cool & windy then
ever so slowly began to improve until
we had great weather by later Sunday.
The NW winds and cooler water temps
did not make for good fishing on the
south shore in general but most here
in camp had pretty good fishing this
weekend. While the smaller rivers did
not provide the walleye bite quite as
expected the Tamarac area was good &
some decent action out from the mouth
of Shotley Brook at times. Those with
the best lake action traveled the 4-5
miles finding plenty of walleye from
Sunny Beach to "the popples". Crappie
were hard to come by for most with a
couple here & there. Sounds like a
little warmer much of the week so hope
the winds can stay down a while now!!

* * * *

Friday May 8 2009
BRRRR- it looks like another chilly
opener. Hopefully no snow but we are
not ruling it out! The NW winds will
send most anglers to the north shore
or river fishing. The rivers should
be a good option with plenty of post
spawn walleye still there. The cool,
windy conditions have not made for
great crappie fishing but a few being
caught. GOOD LUCK this weekend, most
of all STAY SAFE!!!!

UPPER REDLAKE FISHING REPORTS

* * * *

Tuesday am May 5 2009
We are just four days away from the
2009 walleye opener. We hope that the
weather can cooperate, at least the
wind, if so the fishing should be very
good. It sounds as if the rivers will
all be open to fishing as the spawn is
winding down. Sucker fishing was just
so-so this past weekend, we think they
will still run heavier as the waters
warm up. Have heard of a few crappies
being caught, warmer water temps should
help that bite also. We are about set
here, dock is in with just a few items
left in the campground, then fill the
bait tanks probably on Thursday and we
are ready for Saturday!!

UPPER REDLAKE FISHING REPORT

* * * *

Friday May 1 2009
I have already seen some traffic this
am as people start chasing suckers up
& down the creeks. Wednesday was the
last day we could see any remnants of
the ice pack here on Red. The lake is
at a higher level than most years, it
is higher than we need with shorelines
taking a beating. It will be good for
boats getting in & out though. Fishing
should be good for opener, just a matter
of how the weather & winds treat us!

* * * *

Monday am April 27 2009
The strong east winds yesterday took
a toll on the main ice pack. Most of
the lake is now open with some piles
along shore and floating around here
and there. The weather has been up &
down, nice one day then cold-rainy
the next. Sounds better mid-week, not
sure what this weekend will be like
as the sucker season opens on May 1st.
Here we are hoping for some nice days
to ready for "the opener" just a week
from Saturday!

UPPER REDLAKE FISHING REPORTS

Thursday April 23 2009
We are starting to see some open water
out front here and the ice pack really
is looking gray and weak. With 70's &
gusty SW winds forecast today it should
loosen up a little more. The temps are
to drop off quite a bit for the weekend
so we will have ice for a while yet. We
should be in good shape for opener just
over two weeks out now. Plenty of fish
moving in the creeks of late!

* * * *

UPPER REDLAKE FISHING REPORT

* * * *

Sunday April 19 2009
Our temps have slipped back to the 30's
& 40's after a nice streak of 60's to
near 70 degrees. The warm winds really
softened the shorelines and made a dent
in the main ice pack. While we will have
ice for another week and half or two it
is definately more like spring around
here. The pike are running heavy, the
walleye and even a few suckers are now
starting up the creeks also. This is the
first weekend we did not have anyone try
their luck ice fishing, this is about
right with just three weeks 'til opener!!

* * * *

UPPER REDLAKE FISHING REPORTS

* * * *

Tuesday April 14 2009
Finally some springlike weather over
the Easter weekend. Temps pushed +60
degrees and more warm days forecast
for much of the week. This should
begin to soften up the ice pack on
Red but travel via snowmobile or ATV
will be possible for days yet. Those
trying their luck are C&Ring lots of
walleye but crappie have been tough
for the most part. The ditches and
creeks are flowing freely again and
the pike are moving upstream. These
are welcome signs of spring!!

* * * *

Friday April 10 2009
The main ice pack is holding up as the
shoreline begins to soften up slowly
as temps move from 40's to 50's for the
daytime highs. While travel is still a
possibility on Red most fishermen that
are out in northern MN are hitting the
Rainy for it's last few days of early
spring angling. We here are hoping for
some 60 degree days to begin clearing
the big lake for opener just a month
away now! Happy Easter everyone!!!!!!!!

* * * *

Monday April 6 2009
We have 15 degrees this am and the ice
has been holding up. We are to have 40
above during the week then 50's by the
weekend so the shoreline is going to
get very spongy. While we're officially
closed, unofficially we had a couple
pickups still going out this weekend
(ATV's or snowmobiles much safer) and
while the C&R walleye were biting real
well the crappie were a tough bite. We
will continue to give you updates on
current fishing & conditions!!

* * * *

Friday April 3 2009
We ended up getting around three inches
of new snow Tue-Wed and with cool daytime
temps it is hanging around. The ice also
holding it's own so a few pickups getting
out, but ATV's and snowmobiles are a safer
bet. Very few trying crappie fishing with
just the occaisional slab caught here and
there. Personally I am ready for warmer
days to shrink the snow and ice so we can
ready for spring fishing. Think spring!!!

* * * *

UPPER REDLAKE FISHING REPORTS

* * * *

Tuesday am March 31 2009
Winter still hanging on here Up North
as we are to get 2 to 6 plus inches
of new snow today. The cooler temps
has allowed the ditches and creeks to
go down from high levels of last week.
Not too many venturing out on ice of
late, while the ice has been holding
it has been difficult to catch crappie
with walleye action gaining momentum.
We are now into "Think Spring" mode!!

* * * *

UPPER REDLAKE FISHING REPORTS

* * * *

Friday am March 27 2009
We now have winter back with an inch
or two of new snow and around 10 above
zero this am. The ditches started to
break into the lake earlier this week
so some shoreline areas are breaking
up, otherwise travel on ice should be
pretty good by ATV or snowmobile. We
have closed but I think a couple access
points are allowing traffic. The crappie
bite is very scattered, as are the perch.
Of course the best bite is on fish that
are in a closed season now! Have a good
weekend everyone!!
