| Comments: | Well done! Think how much more backward we would be now if O'Neill and O'Donnell and their patrimony were still ruling Ireland?
The flight was a blessing, and note that it was called the Flight of the (English-appointed) earls and not of the (Gaelic-elected) kings. You left out one thing; the earls offered the crown of Ireland to Philip II of Spain in 1595, so they weren't looking for Irish independence as such. He turned them down. |

| Comments: | Previous generations on my father's side came from the south-western shore of Lough Neagh. Descendants are still there, as well like me in Canada, spread around the world. I just spent the first week of June touring in Ireland, very conscious of the 400th anniversary of the Flight of the Earls. Very happy to spend an hour literally in the fields of Athenry.
At the end of the trip made it to Rome for the first time. Three days ago made my way to San Pietro de Montorio and was able to get a gentleman in the church, somewhat reluctantly I felt, to pull back the blue carpet and let me view the tombstones of the Baron of Dungannon and the Earl of Tyrconnell. A wedding was scheduled within the hour in the church so I didn't actually see the marker for the Earl of Tyrone. The feeling of being able to visit that church, see the O'Neill family crest still with its bright red colour in the floor, and read those tombstones exactly 400 years after a major event in Irish history, was truly profound. It was sad however, to see that some of the inside walls of the church are not in great shape, nor was there anywhere to make a small donation towards upkeep of the church. I look forward to thoroughly exploring your website. Thank you. |

My G.G.Grandad was exiled to Tasmania 1850; I am sure his descendants here know very little of the trials and tribulations of the Irish. We learned nothing of this in Aust. schools.I believe my G'Dad must have experienced all the feelings of Hugh and his associates, and spoke little of it but loved "the old country".Congratulations to you and your team.Kerrie J. |

I reside in Australia and William came to Australia early to mid 1800s. My son's Michael and Shaun will hopefully pass down the Name when they have sons. I hope one day to find our link to these high lords of Ireland. Proud to be a Neil. Regards Jeff Neil |

| Comments: | Hello John,
We,in Historic Ballyshannon,Co. Donegal, are keen to be associated with the celebrations in 2007. We have noted in some works, including Eleanor Hull`s article on the Earls`departure (click her name on the net..circa 1931), that Rory O Donnell was based in Ballyshannon when Bath brought news that the ship was waiting in Rathmullen. O`Neill then speedily made his way to Donegal to join O Donnell and the others. Can this be confirmed? Any advice or help would be appreciated. Regards, Billy Finn, Historic Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal. |

| Comments: | What a wonderful discovery your website is to me.I am descended from Irish O'Neills and trying desperately to find relatives from Waterford where my G.G'Father was transported from as a convict to Tasmania in 1845.He was freed on arrival in Hobart and later two sons joined him, leaving family in W'ford. It would be wonderful to know the links to the Great O'Neill, and so sorry my Dad is no longer here to learn with me.Congratulations on the way your website is organized. | Comments: | Well done! Thank you for a clear, informative presentation. I am descended from some Hart ancestors in Ulster (not the Earls, just the tenants, no doubt!). Samuel Hart was likely from Cavan Townland in Co. Armagh, and he married Rebecca Kelly in Clare Presbyterian Church in Co. Armagh on March 15, 1840. Shortly after, they went to Canada and I am one result, five generations later. So I am trying to learn as much as possible about them and their lives. Thank you! |

| Comments: | Thanks for this very useful site. I have had a life long interest in the history of the Nine Years War and particularly in the career of Hugh O Neill. I am making my first visit to Rome in March (06) and top of my to see list after the Vatican will be to visit the church of San Pietro de Montorio. I would also like to find where the exiles live in Rome. I know they stayed at the Palazzio de Penitenzieri when they arrived but not sure where they lived thereafter??? Would be grateful for any information. I was fascinated by the reputed portrait of O Neill as an old man. Where is this? Are there other portraits of O Neill that can be seen in Rome?
Thanks Sean |

| Comments: | Hi John,
The Rare Book reading room holds (99) scholars; and is now running at peak capacity. George Ellery Hale said the Huntington should be a institution of pure scholarship. It currently reminds me of my 24 Hour Fitness Gymnasium. The work is getting done and we are opening up two large new area's fitted with compact shelving. It is the best thing since the Mega lottery. The Art Gallery (The Original Family Home) is getting retro-fitted thanks to a grant from Rose Hills Memorial Parks Foundation. Ironically the City of San Marino has out-lawed cemetaries since its incorparation. (Sounds like a kick back.) We are to make a major rare book collections move in September. It will take about 3 weeks. I'm gonna get buffed. We will move all 1830 to 1875 "Americana", newly acquired collections like the Lasker Horse Racing, the William Morris, The Isherwood, L.A.County medical Coll. This is a nice group of books if one takes ill. You still can come into work instead having to seek treatmnet elsewhere. I have an opportunity to visit Ireland at Christmas with my partner in crime Sean O'Dougherty. His Da' passed recenlty and he's taking his mom. I need pay only my passage. I will keep in touch. I read these pages with much interest and appreciation. We descendants of the diaspora of the once mighty Gael must tell the story of the reaving of the first land dedicated to the BVM, lest it happen again when we and those we love and those we like can prevent it. The pain and suffering are a gift, through which, we can gain reconciliation, and prevent the suffering of so many others in sad places such as Venezuela, Sudan, Bolivia, Somalia, the Hindu Kush...too many places, the world wide plundering of the gifts of God and the trampling of His meek and mild should inspire us to prayer and White Exile, to a man! The pen, the tongue, and the life of truth will be the undoing of the unshriven knaves who turned our beloved Fodla into a naked trembling bloody sod, with help from God! But be prepared to do your shift, as well, since weakness in the face of a mortal challenge is only folly, not turning the cheek, especially if the innocent need protection from the assailant. Too many names in this tale are in my family tree...Cahir O'Docertaigh, Brian na-Murtha O'Ruairc, O'Leary, and too many of my father's O'hAodha family from Muskerry of the Eoghaineacht, stock of Aillil Ollum, who became guardsmen in Spain, then in Cuba, Venezuela. Some irony, there, since our Milesian ancestors fled drought and Roman incursion on the Plain of Stars following the Starry Plough and the Dog Star to Eriu the green hope... and the sad and sorry way to survival once again led back along the same path past the nine waves off Youghal....or more likely, Bantry... By hardened hearts is our true blood shed, Stock of a strong but forgiving race, No revenge do we seek to make, Forbearance, patience and prompt decision to put the truth to false authorities lies, In deed, in thought, and in word make craven tyrants in their leaking boots quake, before sound character leavened with the flash of Grace the better half of valor's game, to God's work we dedicate the Faith of our Dead, and the future hope of the downtrodden human race. |

| Comments: | Hi John,
I know how much reproductions of photos and maps and prints can cost a scholar.(see book review.) I ordered Europeon Sports Channel for my satelite dish. Great Rugby and Soccer Games on this week. The Britsh and Irish Lions bite hard, as the kids would say. The reading room is not too hectic for the summer time. Cheers TC |

My heart is aching that my father, John (Johnnie Neddan) O'Donnell is not alive to see your work. He was an avid student of the history of the O'Donnell family, and a faithful member of the O'Donnell Clan Association. He would have been delighted with your work, as I am myself. I will do everything in my power to promote your debut in Belfast. With much admiration, Mary Ellen Sweeney |
