I ADORE looking for shark teeth, but can never find anyone to go with me. I've been to Venice, Englewood, etc. but never to Peace River. Great article in the St. Petersburg Times today, which prompted me to visit your web site. My kids are grown now so I have more time to see if my interest in fossils is something that can turn into a hobby.

WoW!!!! Super job, excellent content, the fossil history of Florida was well written and over the top. The Screening section was fun to read, well done and fantastic.
Your whole site is excellent and it is a valuable insight to a part of Florida that is often missed by the folks who visit. Good work !!!!

Hi, nice web site! My family will be down the end of March so will miss all the activity either side of this date. I'm the former VP of the Grand Traverse Area Rock and Mineral Club in Traverse City, MI which some of you may have been to. Our club has grown to about 100 persons and has finally put together a web site http://www.tcrockhounds.com where you might find some information on our meetings and other activities including field trips and Keweenaw Week, a native copper and other mineral collecting event in the UP. We hope to have some luck on the Peace river while down so your web site has helped us with that. Good luck, Hollis

Were there any wooly rhinos in Florida? What about Saprokenias (? spelling....mom is typing this for him...he knows more than I do) or terror birds? We are both looking forward to many years of fossil fun and education. Thanks! Justin and his mom, Jennifer

http://www.tampabayfossilclub.com FOSSILFEST 2006 BRINGS the ICE AGE BACK to Florida!

TAMPA, FLORIDA, Jan. 19, 2006 - The ICE AGE returns to Florida when the Tampa Bay Fossil Club presents the 19th annual FossilFest! On March 11th and 12th, 2006 the Florida State Fairgrounds Special Events Center will go back in time to an era when mammoths, saber-toothed cats, giant wolves, sharks the size of school buses, and cavemen ruled Florida’s peninsula.

FossilFest features educational activities for both children and adults geared towards teaching the public about Florida’s wonderful prehistoric past. Vendors will be on hand to sell and trade fossils found here in Florida and from all over the world. Artifacts from Florida’s prehistoric people, gems, minerals, and shells will also be displayed.

“Our goal is to teach Floridians about the animals and prehistoric people that were here long before us,” says president Michael Searle. “These mammoths and lions and camels lived right here where we live today. Their fossil remains are everywhere in Florida.”

There will be presentations both Saturday and Sunday on Florida’s Ice Age and Florida’s cavemen, the prehistoric people. There will also be seminars on hunting for Florida fossils and collection, identification, and preservation techniques.

One of the highlights of FossilFest is the children’s “fossil mine.” Kids will have the opportunity to dig through a sand pit to recover authentic fossils donated by club members.

But it doesn’t end there, club members will then accompany the children to a “learning table” where they will have their fossils identified and bagged for the ride home. That’s right, the kids will get to keep everything they find! “It’s a wonderful learning experience for the children,” says Tampa Bay Fossil Club Director and Hillsborough County school teacher, Patrick McGirk. “You just can’t believe how excited these kids get over fossils.”

There will also be door prizes, raffle prizes, and a silent auction.

“So many people these days are hooked on the Discovery Channel and the History Channel and the Learning Channel. Well, that’s what we’re all about,” says Dr. Bob Sinibaldi, a former president of the Tampa Bay Fossil Club and Pinellas County school teacher. “FossilFest will appeal to anyone who frequents the Discovery Channel, loves science and nature, or has a penchant for history and adventure.”

The Tampa Bay Fossil Club is a family oriented organization focused on paleontology, archaeology, and the natural sciences. Meetings are held monthly at the University of South Florida and feature prominent speakers from many areas of science. The Tampa Bay Fossil Club awards two annual scholarships to University of South Florida students working in the field of paleontology and geology. The 19 year old club hosts numerous field trips and gatherings throughout the year.

FossilFest will host Florida Blood Services who will be on hand to accept donations for the community’s blood supply on Saturday, March 11th.

FossilFest hours are from 9AM until 6PM on Saturday, and 9AM until 4PM on Sunday. Admission is $5.00 for adults, children 12 and under are free.

The Tampa Bay Fossil Club brings the ICE AGE back to Florida!

http://www.OregonFossilGuy.com Greeting TBFC Members:

I'm a non-commercial collector seeking trades and possible field trip
assistance for legal fossil hunt between Jan 20-28.

Building a collection for donation to a museum which captures the fossil
record of our nation's two "west coasts" (e.g. Oregon and the Gulf).

My fourth trip to your region; flying through Tampa/St Pete, staying in
Venice. Unfortunately, local dive shop is not doing any charters the week
I'm there, so I'm looking for fellow diver to partner with as well as any
one interested in escorting a wayward Oregonian to legal collecting sites.
Especially interested in legal access to any Bone Valley locations.

Have appropriate permit and am a very responsible collector (e.g. legal
access, minimal impact, keep sites clean, no sale of found specimens,
compile Florida report). Also have full collection of Florida fossil
publications and good input on sites.

Have mobility most of the week and willing to chip in travel and meal
expenses. Additionally happy to bring along Oregon beach fossil specimens
for trade and/or troubles as well as to donations to your annual FossilFest
event.

Thank you, in advance, for your feedback and fossil assistance.

FLINT KNAPPING CLASS!
Over the past few years TBFC has hosted several flint-knappers at our meetings and FossilFest. Their presentations are always well received. One of the things I’ve heard a lot from you folks is that you’d like to learn how to make your own spear points and arrowheads. Well, now’s your chance. On January 21, 2006, TBFC will host its first flint knapping class. The class will include all the tools and stone you’ll need to get started. The class instructor will be flint-knapping artisan, Carl Dowell and his assistant Hugh McKenzie. The cost of the class will be $30 per person and will include a billet, leg pad, abrader, flint and 4 hours of instruction. The only items you’ll need to provide are safety glasses (mandatory) and comfortable leather gloves. Class size is limited, so register early! Contact Michael Searle at (813) 909-9358 or fossilnerd@msn.com for details.

Hello TBFC Members,

Our first meeting for the 2005 - 2006 season will be held on September 10th, 2005 at 7:30 PM. Please note, due to the Labor Day holiday we will be meeting on the second Saturday of the month. We will return to TBFC’s normal schedule of meeting on the first Saturday of the month for the remainder of the season. As usual we will meet in room BEH103 of the Behavioral Science Building (directions can be found on the inside cover of your Fossil Chronicles).

Our speaker for September is Avocational Paleontologist and author, Mark Renz. Mark will discuss a half-million year old Florida riverbed and dozens of partial skeletons he discovered. The fossils from the site include Mammoths, mastodons, llamas, deer, horse, capybaras, sloths peccaries, jaguars, saber cats, wolves, snakes and alligators. Mark’s presentation will ponder the question of what killed so many animals at one site. Mark’s presentation will also touch on the ethics of fossil collecting and the four books he has written on Florida paleontology.

Mark will have his newest book, Giants in the Storm for sale and will be signing copies for those interested. Come early for a good seat. We always have a full-house for Mark’s presentations.

TBFC meetings are free and open to the public. If you have any questions or need help with directions, feel free to contact me at anytime.

Good Hunting,

FOSSILFEST 2005 BRINGS the ICE AGE BACK to TAMPA

TAMPA, FLORIDA, FEBRUARY 6, 2005 - The Ice Age returns to the Florida State Fairgrounds Special Events Center on March 12th and 13th when the Tampa Bay Fossil Club presents the 18th annual FossilFest 2005! Mammoths, lions, saber toothed-tigers, bears, sloths, rhinos, camels and sharks the size of a school bus, will be just some of Florida’s prehistoric beasts brought back to life during this annual event. Tampa Bay Fossil Club members will display museum quality specimens found right here in Florida’s abundant fossil record. Admission is $4.00 for adults, children 12 and under are free.

The mission of FossilFest is to introduce to the public Florida’s prehistory and the wealth of fossils that our state has to offer. Seminars will be conducted on Saturday and Sunday when fossil club members will teach how and where to legally hunt for fossils and artifacts, and how to identify them and prepare them for display. One of the highlights of FossilFest is the children’s fossil mine. Kids will have the opportunity to dig through a sand pit and recover authentic fossils donated by club members. Which USF campus is your meeting place?I would like to come to one of your meetings. I am a micropaleontologist, specializing in foraminifera. I work about half of each year as a consultant in Bakersfield, CA. I would like to help you reconstruct ancient marine environments for your fossil localities using planktic and benthic foraminifera. However, I don't know how to extract the forams from limestone without dissolving them. I have no experience identifying them in thin section. If there are clay lenses, I might be able to help. THE ICE AGE RETURNS!
FOSSILFEST 2004!

The Ice Age invades the Florida State Fairgrounds on March 13th and 14th, 2004 when the Tampa Bay Fossil Club presents the 17th annual FossilFest 2004!

Lions and tiger and bears, and SHARKS, will be just some of the fossilized remains on display during the annual event. Prehistoric sharks will be the featured fossil at FossilFest. FossilFest will present lectures by Dr. Gordon Hubble from the Discovery Channel’s, Shark Week and other prominent shark experts. Club members will display museum quality specimens found right here in Florida’s abundant fossil record. There will be vendors from all over the world on hand to display and sell fossils as well. Artifacts from Florida’s prehistoric Indians will be on also be on display. The highlight of FossilFest is always the children’s fossil mine where kids get the opportunity to dig for their very own fossils! There will be free hourly door prizes, raffle prizes, and a silent auction. Florida Blood Services will also be on hand to take donations.

Dr. Gordon Hubble is considered to be one of the countries leading authorities on prehistoric and modern sharks and will lecture on both Saturday and Sunday. Dr. Hubble has been featured in three editions of the Discovery Channels, Shark Week. The children’s sand mine and discovery table are always a hit. For a nominal fee, children can dig for their very own fossils. Club members will be on hand to help children identify their treasures and bag them up for the trip home. That’s right, the kids get to keep what they find! Displays by club members will feature fossils found right here in Florida. Artifacts from Florida’s prehistoric people are always a big hit too. FossilFest hours are: 9 AM until 6 PM on Saturday and 9 AM until 4 PM on Sunday. Admission is: Adults $4.00, Children 12 and under are FREE with paying adult. FossilFest will be held in the Special Events Center at the Florida State Fairgrounds located at the intersection of US 301 and Interstate 4, just east of Tampa.

Great information on your website, (do I recognize many of the pictures and illustrations from Mark Renz's book?) Makes me wish I were a bit closer to your area so I could share in your outings especially to the Peace River and the Leisy shell pit. I want to find a Meg tooth too! My outings haven't gone so well, (high water from all of the rain, major road and bridge construction at 10 Mile Creek and fenced off roads that were formerly open), but I've only just started!

I Just finished reading "Fossiling in Florida," which was a very helpful book, but still isn't quite what I'm needing. It did however refer me to your club.
I presently live in Seffner Fl. and have in my possesion numerous fossils as to which I have no idea what they are or how to date them. There are NO BOOKS anywhere that have some of what I have found!,,,,,, (grrrrrrrrrrr)
I am hoping to find a "club," or "society," that I may become a part of or even work for with my new found passion and knack for finding fossils. Any help or response would be sooooooo greatly appreciated!!! (A little frustrated here, LOL, can't you tell?)
I love finding fossils, I am a certified diver, an animal lover, and an earth conservationist.
My belief is that I belong to this planet, it does NOT belong to me, and would love to teach the world my, "our", findings and mabey it will help to ever prevent more extinctions of animals and humans.
The past has always intrigued me to no end, whether it deals with human life or the animal species. Now that I have started uncovering fossils, well you might say that I instantly became addicted! LOL
I have found a new inner drive in my self which at this time is revolving around fossils. I hope to find a group that also shares the same passion! The passion of searching, finding, and obtaining a great reward........ and that is..... KNOWLEDGE :)
Hope to hear from you real, REAL soon. Thanks for letting me ramble.

Sincerely,

Jami Zotz

I am trying to buy a copy of vertebrate fossils: a neophytes guide by Frank A Kocsis. I was told by Mark Renz that your club may still sell this book. Please advise. I have been looking everywhere, but its no longer being printed. Thank you very much, Rebecca Sloan

I would appreciate any suggestions as to easily accessible fossil collection sites that I could take my 12 year old son to, preferably in Southern Hillsborough County. Shark teeth (megalodon if we are lucky) or any vertebrate sites would be wonderful for a few hours of weekend collecting. I hate to just start wandering around looking for fossils when I know that there are particular geological sites where they are much more concentrated, but I do not have a clue where to begin. Any and all specific sites that you could suggest are very welcome. Thanks!!!

Hello,
I am a member of TBFC but have never attended a meeting as I live in Louisiana. Would like to know when the December 2001 meeting will be and the location, also directions to the meeting location. I went on the Caloosa dig this past summer and had a great time.
Thank you,
Andy
