Congratulations on your long overdue honor. You have been the driving force in many a quilters. When I attended your Silver Lake Retreat, I was a novice amoung the greatest quilters but you treated me as if I were their equal. I am still quilting and hope to do more when I retire. You are the greatest!!!!! |

| Comments: | Thank you so much for sharing some of your life and insights with me. I have been an ardent admirer since I read your first column. I am so happy to know, since I came to quilting so late, that being older dosen't mean a thing. Your quilts keep getting better and hopefully mine will also. Of course not being able to operate a machine until I was 55 is a bit of a handicap but I'm getting better. Making quilts is the greatest joy, next to my family and reading your words just reinforces my feelings. Thank you so much for inspiring me so many times;; Sincerely, Christina from a small village in Newfoundland Canada, miles from towns or quilt shops [but you'd love my stash which I will top up on my visit to Missouri in June to get a new grandson] |

I have given all my quilts to others and I am (or was!) in a frenzy thinking that I would not have many more nimble thimble days in me!! I now have such a sense of joy and eagerness to continue learning without the fear of running out of time! I am a grandmother too.. and have made my babies a few quilts each. I have never made any thing quite as involved as you yet, but, Helen, I know I won't stop until I do some beautiful art quilts that are deep inside ready to become a gift!! Thank you so much! I so enjoyed viewing your galleries and thank you for sharing. There was mention about the length of time from idea to completion of one of your quilt. Also, this month your column encouraged me to take moments "here and there" to fuel my creative soul. I am still wondering how and when you do all your art? Besides using your microwave, where oh where do you find the time?! Any further suggestions are welcome. All the best to you and thank you again for inspiring me |

| Comments: | Dear Helen,
I am still enjoying your book, Every Quilt Tells a Story. I knew from your writing that you are a remarkable lady, but now that I see some of your quilts here, WOW!!! When I read the chapter in your book about Wagon Wheels, I could so relate. I don't make the artistic quilts you do, and probably never will. Applique is not my thing. But I do love the geometric blocks. I know the computer programs out there are perfectly suited for them, but many's the time I got out my trusty pencil and graph paper and sketched out a block, coloring it in with colored pencils. My next step is to sketch the whole quilt (on a smaller scale) on the graph paper. I was fortunate enough to find a pad of 11 X 14" graph last fall at the office supply store. Love it, love it, love it! This helps me not only to visualize the whole quilt, including borders, but it helps me to calculate my fabric yardage. And I refer to that sketch many times as I layout my blocks. Most times I make changes as I go, sometimes even making an extra block or two because when I stand back and look at it, I feel it needs a lighter colored block here or a blue one there. Here's the funny part. I'm a computer programmer by day. Single mom, seamstress, and quilter by night. That's when I am happiest. When I am with my kids and when I'm sewing or quilting. Keep up the great writing! We all love it! |

| Comments: | Dear Helen,
I began teaching myself to quilt in January 2006. Everything I have ever made has been a gift for someone. I was finally successful at getting my best friend Stacy interested in quilting. This year for my birthday, she sent me your book, Every Quilt Tells A Story. The words she wrote were "I don't know why, but this book made me think of you the second I saw it!" Well, Helen, she was right. The minute I received it, I fell in love with it. I have felt such a connection to you with these stories. I have never had a family member teach me anything about quilting, but you remind me so much of me and so I guess in a way, it feels like I am with family when I read your stories. What a treasure! And, speaking of treasures... you are one! I am very proud of your accomplishments and what you offer to the quilting world. It is people like you who keep me inspired, even when I have a twinge of doubt about my abilities. Speaking of birthdays, Happy belated! Your writings always make me smile, but this one made me cry. Tears of joy rolled themselves into my heart as I went back in time and celebrated your birth when your dear husband Bill honored you in the most loving and romantic way on your 80th birthday. You two are surely bonded by threads no one can ever break. How lovely! Well, I just wanted to tell you how special you are for bringing so much joy into people's lives. I have lost 22 loved ones in the past two and a half years and I told God I needed joy back in my life. Well, Helen, you have helped provide that for me. Whenever I need a little joy, I pick up your book, read, smile and feel connected. I was thrilled to attend the Houston International Quilt Festival again this year with my friend(I told her we had to make this a tradition, as last year when we went, it was the first and only time I had taken a vacation in the last 3 years when a loved one did not die). I was on the hunt for your book Joy of Quilting. I walked into the book booth, looked up, and right there in front of me just after stating I wish I could find your book, was YOUR BOOK. The lone copy waited for me to find it. The last copy in the booth was meant for me and I was happy to purchase it at a QUILT FESTIVAL. Thanks again Helen for all that you share and all that you bring to others' lives just by being you. You are a true blessing and a wonderful intrument of God. You have helped patch up a grieving, broken heart and mend it with warm joy. Sincerely, Shannon Nay Austin, Texas |

| Comments: | Dear, Dear Helen, The extra "dear" comes from affection, not awe at your great age. This is a much delayed Thank You for your class at the John Campbell Folk School this August. Although I was far from your best student in term of production, I learned so much about how to view nature, color, and light, and how to bring them to a quilt. They are things that will stay with me even when my fingers no longer can cut, piece and sew. Again, thank you.
Love, Louise |

By the way, I was so blessed to have met you when your presented a program and class at Kaw Valley Quilt Guild in Lawrence, KS a number of years ago. Thank you for sharing your super cake and celebration. Christine Hile |

| Comments: | i have been a fan of your column and have read every one for the last 21years. i recently read you column re: your 80th bd and the cake. you sound like such a wonderful wonderful person. that is why i have read your column all these years. your humor and your talents...i have snipped pics of your quilts and saved your published quilt designs too over the years. anyway, when i read that latest column re: your bd 'bash' :) and the cake your husband oredered for you and your way of sharing it with your q group. needless to say the end of the column became a soggy mess as my eyes filled with tears at the thought of the joyful time you had..and in remembrance of all the columns i have saved and read over and over again, the ones i chuckled over as i read with cup of tea in hand, the ones that described the aura of a sewing room with a window to view the birds and see the gardens or trees or whatever. as i had in my last sewing room [i don't have one now and it will be a long time till i do, my focus is on house/yard repair and quilting has been set aside for the time being]. anyway dear lady, thank you for all the stories, helps, quilts and all the years...thankyou and a belated happy birthday...and i hope to be reading and sharing views of your life and your world of quilting for many more years to come. |

Yes, I agree that there is a lot of angst when designing and making a quilt. I sometimes work on a quilt and put it away for a while and come back several more times before the idea is just right. I love your unique approach to quilting and ability to get it just right. The quilts you make are very artistic. |

| Comments: | Dear Helen I have been reading QNM for some time, albeit with a break when the American dollar was high, and yours was always the first article that I would turn to for uplifting ideas and ways of looking at the world. No snow here in Auckland New Zealand, too temperate, and as a result not so much differentiation between the seasons and colours around us, more difference between winter and summer. Thank you for a glimpse into your world, it has been wonderful. Quilting was started to be altruistic towards a friend who was inundated with small children, but it quickly became very personal. Thank you for your work. |

| Comments: | Helen: I read and re-read your columns enjoying your philosophy and joy of life. I made my first quilt, piecing on my grandmother's treadle machine, while in my teens in the 60's and have worked mostly by myself, reading magazines and books for inspiration. I have made abt 125 quilts to date giving most away to family, friends and charity. With so many art quilts I have often dispaired at my inability to create something so beautiful.I seem to lack the "eye" that is necessary for the design of such quilts. Your column has often revitalized me and brought back the pure pleasure of laying out my fabrics, running my fingers over them and dreaming of what can be.Thank you |

I am one of a group of church quilters that also donates quilts that we make and when we quilt for others, spend that income on mission projects. I too love hand work, applique and hand quilting. I know machine quilting has become very popular. So many of the young women I know will buy a mq item as part of their "decor" and when they change colors, out goes the quilt and in comes another. Handquilted quilts are keepsakes. Love your articles and will have to become a regular website user too. |

You are one of those rare people who embrace life & people with both arms wide open and ready for whatever. Your postcard quilts are fantastic - I'll bet you've never heard that before!! Thanks again for an enjoyable evening. By the way, I don't do birthday math either - so, will you be my Mom???? |

| Comments: | I enjoyed visiting your site, Helen. I'm a Wisconsin native now transplated to Oregon State. I'm not a quilter but some of my best friends are! I do write novels that have quilts as part of the story. I mostly write books based on the lives of real women. My current title is about a woman who quilted and some of her quilts remain in the museum that commenorates the colony she lived in, in Aurora, Oregon. It's just nice to read your gentle words and how quilts weave their way through your days. Warmly, Jane |

What a pleasure to see your beautiful works of art. I have something to which to aspire. |
