Comments:Dear Bill and family,
I am a knitter, not a quilter, but something drew me to purchase a copy of Helen's "Joy of Quilting" while on vacation last week. I sat on a park bench in the dappled sunlight (while my husband continued to browse in the bookstore) and started reading and immediately fell in love with Helen, and her family, too. When I arrived home today, I looked her up on the internet and felt a surprisingly strong sense of shock and sorrow to hear of her passing. It was like meeting a new friend, only to immediately lose her. I hope you are comforted to know that even after her passing, Helen is still inspiring and connecting with "new" friends.I look forward to reading her other books, and will continue to be inspired by her meticulous, beautiful work. Please accept my late, but very heartfelt condolances.

Comments:I recently found out about Helen's passing, and I feel a deep sense of loss and sadness, as I know thousands of others all around the world feel as well.
Helen was an amazing generous woman, talented storyteller and wonderful quilter. The quilting world and QNM will never be the same without her. Her column in QNM was a huge influence on me, she is always on my mind when binding a quilt. She made us all feel her humanity as she was only to ready to write about her mistakes, which we all make, so much more than a name on a page. I have cut out many years of Loose Threads, as well as both her books. They encourage me when I feel low as I lost my mother just over 12 months ago, and now have no one to talk to about patchwork and quilting, Helen was always there in print for a chat.
My thoughts and prayers are with Helen's family and friends, and especially Bill whom we all came to know through her column. I'm sure she's off teaching the angels quilting with an endless stash and threads of gold!

Comments:I am the least of all quilters. Not at all perfect, always a little unsure and very intimidated by all the talent I see in Quilters' Newsletter. I always read Helen's column first, Always. She always wrote from her heart and always made me feel that whatever I attempted to make was just fine. That whatever mistakes my quilts would have, whatever imperfections, they were just fine, and gave that quilt it's personality and uniqueness. I felt brave enough to try, and proud enough to give my quilt away. Thank you for your precious, humorous, human insight into the life of a quilter. You have touched my life like no other, and I will always remember you Helen. Bless you ! My prayers of comfort to you, Family. Your loss is great but take comfort in the fact that you will be united again with Helen. She's up there now, making beautiful quilts Of sunrises, rainbows, and sunsets to comfort you when you arrive.

I have bought old (old old) copies of Quilter's Newsletter, and that is my favorite parts. I know it must make you happy to know that so many people felt like she was an old friend.

Comments:I always have a few "Quilter's Newsletter" magazines in a pile ... unread until a few leisure moments present themselves. Often I pick them up "out of order". I decided to fill out the survey and was puzzled when "Loose Threads" was not included in the selections of "What Do I Turn To First". It is/was what I always read first when I opened a new magazine. I've read Helen's books, her columns and have even had an email response from her when I had one of those stupid "user-error" rotary cutter incidents when I sliced off a bit of my finger! There was also a "6 degrees of separation" connection discovered when I mentioned to my daughter that a person whom I admired (being a writer and a quilter)lived in Minneapolis. My daughter, who lives in Minneapolis, said she had a co-worker whose mother was "someone famous". Lo and behold, that "famous someone" was my Helen Kelley. I must admit that I had always hoped to have enough courage to ask Helen "out to lunch" on one of my visits to MN. Sadly, that never happened. I will miss her column. Her family should take solace in the fact that so much of Helen is left for the world to enjoy through her words and I am sure through the many quilts in her body of work. Not many people leave such a tangible legacy. My sympathy to all of the family.

Comments:Today I am cleaning up the pile of past Quilting Newsletters by the side of my bed. I have been disappointed in the magazine lately, and going through the old issues, I was trying to pinpoint when things had changed, and decided it was in 2008. Quilting Newletter is not that same as it used to be, and I miss Helen's touch. Thankfully it is still there, I just have to go back in time to meet her.

Comments:Helen touched my life in such a wonderful way. As a new quilter 9 years ago I was introduced to Helen by her writings. I was self taught while I was living and working in the countryside in New York state. I knew no other quilters for most of the time and had to drive many miles to get to a fabric quilting store. Helen's humor and timing warmed my heart and made me feel very close to her even though we had never met.
She has enhanced my life and my quilting world.
Thank you Helen you will be greatly missed.

Comments:I was looking into the possibility of buying a membership to Quilter's Newsletter (I've not had one in a while.), when I saw that Helen had died. Over the years, I have enjoyed her columns more than any other in the quilting world. Every time I got the magazine, I always went to her articles first. I believe that she is having a ball being creative in heaven, but even in small ways, I know that she will be missed here.

Would you please consider compiling her articles and other writings into a book, or books? Also please don't limit the sale of them via the Quilter's Newsletter world, if QN will agree. The quilt world at large needs access to her insight and wisdom. One great venue would be the American Quilter's Society.

Thank you for considering this.

She started us off on a brodrie purse project which I had never heard of before, but I dutifully dived in. I still have the unfinished Tree of Life in my stash. I have read her monthly column in QNL since its beginning and enjoyed her soft touch and humor. My condolences.

Comments:I've been reading Helen's articles as long as I've been quilting - Has she really been my favorite journalist for 25 years? That long? Just seems like yesterday that she became a friend in my reading life. Helen's articles have always reflected something recently on my mind, expressed a thought I shared or gave me fresh ideas, inspiriation and always motivation. She was the quilting/life mentor that a mother or grandmother might have been had the mother been interested or had the grandmothers been younger. So, when I heard she was gone, I felt like I'd lost someone really important in my life. Thanks, Helen and thanks to your family for sharing her with me all those years.

I am so very proud to be the owner of all her books and a wall hanging that she made for me. I have not yet received my QN but here in England it takes a little more time to arrive. All my good wishes go to you from myself and family and also the groups I represent. On the lighter side Helen will still be seen regularly, as when she demonstrated at Kisko Factory in Leicester we took photos and these along with many other visitors are on the walls in the ladies cloakroom. I will make sure a notice goes into some of the english publications. All my love to you and the family, Jeanne Gentry, Whetstone, Leicester.xxxxxxxxxxxx

Comments:Dear Family of Helen,

I just received QNM yesterday and as always the first I read is Helen's column.
Always so good to read, just as if she was sitting next to me ........ .
And now I opened the issue and the first I saw was
"In Memory of Helen"
and I was shocked.

I wrote her several times and she always found the time to write back to me.
She was so talented and she was so inspiring and she still wanted to do so much .......... .

****

I do not have the right words to comfort you,
these words should only disturb the quietness,
through which you cannot hear the emptyness
Helen left behind.

I wish you all the love that is needed to work up this loss.

****

I so enjoyed reading her column and, of course, read it the first thing when my Quilter's Newsletter arrived. I once wrote Helen and told her that I new she was a very busy lady, but I just HAD to tell her how much I enjoyed reading her articles about her adventures and of Bill! I actually received an answer the next morning! It thrilled me so much to know that she wasn't too busy to answer me! She will be missed! My love and prayers to her family!

Comments:I feel like I have lost a friend. I have enjoyed Helen's writing for many years.................relating to what she was saying so many times as we are of the same generation. Her wit, the humor she found in so many quilting situations, that we all could relate to.....that is what I am going to miss.

Especially her comments in the November Quilters Newsletter on eyelid surgery which I now find I must have after my cataracts are removed. She seemed to find topics that touched us all in one way or another.

May she find a stash in heaven that will be organized, contain every color she wants and all the beautiful fabrics that any quilter could desire, her favorite sewing machine, patterns, embellishments and friends to sit and sew with.

Someday we will join you but for now, happy stitching and know that you will be missed Helen.

Sincerely, Marilyn

You have been carrying your loss for over two months now, and as so many of us just recently received our Quilter's Newsletter magazine, we begin to mourn with you. I never corresponded with Helen, but I always felt that whatever I was struggling with, Helen would have understood.

She went very far and earned many great awards in the quilting world, but it was her ability to connect with others that got her there gracefully. I'll miss her columns. My condolences to you on your loss.

Comments:Dear Bill and Kelley Family,
I was so saddened to learn of Helen's passing on the AQS website today. I am a long-time subscriber of Quilter's Newsletter and Helen's column was the first thing I read every time I received an issue in the mail. Although I never met her in person, we had a brief email exchange a number of years ago and she had such kind words for me. I have two of her books, and am honored to have had one of them signed by Helen, thanks to a friend who lived in Houston and took the book to the Quilt Festival when Helen was there. Helen will be greatly missed by the quilting community, but she lives on in our hearts. I know she is having a "glorious" time in heaven, dreaming of new quilts and remembering her family and friends. My sincere sympathy to you and your family...may you be ever comforted by fond memories of that great lady.
Regards,
Lil Koster

Comments:I am so sorry for your loss. I just read about Helen in the Stephens College newsletter, The Ideal Connection. I wanted to tell her that I graduated from Stephens in 1969, am Norwegian, enjoy quilting, own a Singer Featherweight, and enjoy photography. She had an amazing way with words and I was hoping we could establish a long, happy friendship. I visited the website and am absolutely astounded by the beautiful work she did. I wish I could have taken a class with her. I can only hope to learn to quilt half as well as she did. Her journaling is a pleasure to read and is filled with interesting insights. I know you miss her. Best wishes, Donna

Comments:From the first time I saw Helen Kelley's postage stamp Mother Goose quilt eons and eons ago until this very sad day, I have been on a journey with her. Through the years, her books, stories, and columns have taught me, delighted me, and opened my eyes and heart to all the possibilities of quilting. (For sure, I had never even envisioned a quilt with pieces the size of postage stamps until I saw that awesome, wonderful quilt!) Somehow, I thought that she would always be with me. Somehow, I never said thank you--till now. Thank you to you her family, I feel like I've met you all along the way. I'm tremendously sorry for your loss.

Comments:Please accept my sympathies on your loss. We've all lost someone special with Helen's passing. I loved reading Helen's columns -- hers was always the first article I read through when my issue of Quilter's Newsletter arrived, and I always read them at least a second time when I read the rest of the magazine. I loved hearing about her sources of inspiration. One of my favorites was about the squirrels frolicking. I shall miss her. May God grant you comfort during this time. Yours, Robin

Comments:I just found out about Helen's passing, and I feel a profound sense of loss and sadness, as I'm sure thousands of others feel as well. Helen was an amazing woman -- a gifted storyteller and quilter -- and the world will never be the same without her. I had the extreme privilege to meet her in person some years ago when she was lecturing at a quilt show in Williamsburg, VA. Her column in QNM was a huge influence on me and when my book was published in 2005, I sent her a copy. She replied with a handwritten note which I cherish dearly and have kept on my desk since that time.
God bless Helen's family and friends, and especially Bill whom we all came to know fondly through her writings. I'm sure she's off quilting with the angels somewhere stitching with threads of gold!
