| Comments: | This week's National Post had a front-page article about your shul. It reminded me of the wonderful time we spent in your community many years ago when I took my family to the Maritimes. My wife's first name is Toby, so you can imagine how surprised I was when I saw a store on Main Street with the name Toby & Ein. We visited Mr. Ellie Marshall in his clothing store and he was very hospitable. The community isn't near a hotel, so they put my family up in a bed and breakfast near the shul and even paid for half the cost! Shul on Shabbos was wonderful. It seems they didn't often get visitors and they called everyone in the community to come to the shul. I lead the services and was pleasantly surprised that the congregation knew the tunes I used and joined in gustily. When the congregation found out that my late Uncle Joe Silver's sister was a former member of the shul, they took me under their wings and considered me an adopted member of their community. I truly felt at home. Before we left, one of the members, a fisherman, came to our bed and breakfast with a large haul of cod (which by the way was under a quota). I am studying to be a cantor, and was honored last summer to lead services in Sydney at Temple Sons of Israel. As part of my cantorial program, I am doing an internship at Temple Emanu-el in Providence, RI. Next week, I will be sharing Cape Breton Jewish history with the shul's Leisure Club. Though my time in Cape Breton has been limited to periodic visits, I feel a deep connection to the place - I thank my mother Anita Schick for sharing her love of the Mira with her daughters. |

| Comments: | While researching my roots I discovered that my Aunt Sarah Grace Sheppard married Augustus(Gus)Feder and lived in Stephenville, Newfoundland. When Gus died in 1950 his remains were sent to the Jewish cemetery in Sydney, Nova Scotia. He was buried there with other members of his Feder family who settled in Cape Breton after arriving from Russia in the early 1920's. I am interested in finding the location of the Jewish Cemetery and if possible have a volunteer send me a picture of Gus's headstone. |

I’m sure it will prove to be an excellent research site for those interested in their Cape Breton Jewish roots, or, for those who have historical interests. If I may, I would like to comment on the Shul pictures. The inside pictures are great. However, the winter picture of the outside of the synagogue is a bit uninviting __too cold looking.
