| Something about you - geography; language; mood; as you like...: | Would I be correct to say that the Imp was initially conceived and designed without a specific engine in mind. And that several outsourced engines were considered. I recall as a mechanic, attending a course at the BL factory in 1970 and the Imp was discussed, I'm sure I recall it being mentioned that the very first engine used experimentally was a cut down A series Mini engine.
That is to say the Rootes engineers skilfully reduced the Mini engine from four to two cylinders literally by cutting the engine in half and modifying the fuel and spark delivery to suit. It was obviously not successful hence the eventual and inspired arrival at the Coventry Climax. You will be aware that the same Coventry Climax engine was used for years as a portable fire pump engine. What you may not know is that the engine was factory converted to diesel for the same purpose! I can say from experience that this was not quite as 'portable' as stated. I wonder if anyone has ever married the diesel engine with the car and what performance was acheived. Best wishes Malcolm Waterman |

| Why did you visit / what were you looking for ? Did you find it ?: | Dear Sir,
for a couple of months now I do some careful research about Michael Parkes and in the end - hopefully - there will be a biography about a very colourful and multi-faceted personality. In November I had a long rendezvous with Brenda Vernor, his former girlfriend. She still lives next to the Ferrari factory in Maranello and she gave me addreses of drivers, colleagues and journos. Since then I do interviews and I do get more and more "connected". MP`s formative years in England are so long gone that I find it almost impossible to trace his early career. Therefore I concentrate my research on this continental years when he drove / worked for Ferrari, Fiat and Lancia: Michael Parkes / "An Englishman Abroad" / The Italian Years 1963 - 1977" Now for my request (at last!): On your Imp Site / Mike Parkes there are some remarks from his brother John (23.02.2006). Would you please be so kind as to let me know if you can provide my with his address / mail-address / telephone number? Brenda Vernor told me that he is in Africa but she is no longer in touch with him. Mark Hughes / MotorSport Magazine passed on a telephone number which is of no use any longer (+44 208 969 3425). Maybe you can help? Your support would be highly appreciated!! Keep up your good work for the Imp Site and thank you so much for your kind understanding. Best regards, Andreas Hackbarth |

| Something about you - geography; language; mood; as you like...: | The information on the page linked below is incorrect. Erling Jensen bought my car that had been regularly beating him in previous years at the end of 1991. My car which is the one in the picture was the penultimate Maguire Stiletto built and was the last square tube car. Brian Cutting's car was the last car bulit and was a one off round tube chassis car. This car was bought from Brian by Paul Gardner of Bournemouth who raced it at Castle Combe but was never able to get anywhere near Brian's pace.
I am in the picture in the red overalls. After the Stiletto I continued to race in the Castle Combe GTs with a 4.5 litre Skoda Tiga. Erling did a fair bit of drilling and lightening of the car after he bought it from me and did get down into the 1:06 second laps. The best that I ever did was 1:07.09 but Erling was a good couple of stones lighter than me. The car weighed 427kgs ready to go without driver. The head and inlet manifold were specials by Ray Payne and on the rolling road at Sigma Engineering in Dorset, Ray was somewhat amazed to see 118bhp at the wheels from a 998! http://www.imps4ever.info/racing/races/jensen.html If you want any photos or more info, please let me know. Best regards, Phil Lomas. |

| Something about you - geography; language; mood; as you like...: | Hi Franka, I've enjoyed reading your Imp Site. It's very comprehensive, the sort of site we could do with for the Sunbeam Alpine. I was trying to find an article you once ran on Ernie Beck, who was main engine tuner for the Rootes Competitions Department but I got "Access denied" to www.imps4ever.info/tech/tuners_builders/rootes which was the address of the article. Copy was, I think, prepared by Ernie's son, Tony. My interest centres on accessing as much info on Rootes Comps as possible, to celebrate the 60th Anniversary this year of the founding of the Comps Dept. If you could put me in touch with Tony, I'd be very grateful. Also, I guess Andrew Millington, who is on your list of tuning parts suppliers, is related to Tim Millington, who worked at Chrysler/Peugeot Comps when Des O'Dell was Manager. Is this correct? I'd be very grateful for any help you can offer. I'm on SAOC Committee and an ARCC rep for that Club, but this request is my own. Incidentally I once tuned a 1971 Imp Husky with a 998cc engine. Didn't half move! But hopelessly front-light, therefore under-steered like crazy on loose surfaces and snow. I stick to a Series V Alpine these days but miss the Imp. Best wishes, Rod. |

| Something about you - geography; language; mood; as you like...: | Hi,
in the mid 1970's I built an Imp engined solo motorcycle. it used a wideline featherbed frame, an 875 imp engine, a norton clutch & gearbox & a variety of other bits. The engine was mounted symetrically for solo use & I used a countershaft supplied by a guy near bristol who called himself stoke gifford engineering. I registered it in 1977 reg was VPU4S. I rode it for two years both in UK & Europe & sold it in 1979. I never heard anything of it for many years then I was waiting for a ferry across the channel & there it was! I told the chap riding it I made it-he looked puzzled & off we went. Then some years later I was again at the docks & saw it again! Checking the DVLA website shows that it is still taxed & in use. 31 years - not bad for a homemade bike I still have photos of the machine if anyone is interested! |

I am building a F Junior replica and am mounting the transaxle backward, which means I will have 4 reverse gears and 1 forward. Can the crownwheel and pinion be rotated 180 degrees as in a VW box, if you modify the casing and has anyone done this? oris the only way out of this done by rotating the whole gerabox thru 180?

Just to let you know that the 3 Bond 875's in Colchester mentioned on your site were rescued by a friend and I some 4 years ago. One is in dailyish use by me for rallies/work etc the other two are still undergoing work as time permits. Regards Adrian Polley. PS The chap that owned them ( in his 80's ) has sadly passed away so it might be better if you could remove this mention from your site in respect of his widow who might be frightened of strangers still looking for them. Thanks |

My father owned a Sunbeam Imp Sport which I remember well, TWY 43F, the colour was "Brazil" or metallic bronze I believe. Although he has had many cars since but it was a car he really enjoyed and still I think is probably his favourite ever car. Is there somewhere in the UK where I could arrange for him to drive one again? Thanks if you can help? Regards Jon |
