| Something about you - geography; language; mood; as you like...: | Contrary to the info on your Web page, Mr. Gay was not involved with the formation of the Scuderia Stiletto. Major George Esser and myself collaborated on the construction and design of the Stiltetto F-Micro. I have pictures to substantiate the fabrication of George's concept car. It featured a Goggomobile/trans axel engine -used exclusively by myself and another Air Force Sgt. Arlan Edwards. We both won the European Micro Midget Championships -Arlon won the Class-A and I won the Class-B event. Later, I won the first ever, Micro midget road race event at Hann Air Base.
Major Esser was never involved with my Emery GT-P car, other than an ardent supporter of our mutually developed "Scuderia Stiletto" Team. George and I went to the London Race car show appreciably to meet with John Cooper to solicit consulting advice for the design of the suspension on the F-Micro under development [I have a photo of George making measurements on John's newly developed F-3 at the London Show. Bill Vanderford, mentioned in the info, was in fact a member of the International Sports Car Club in Kaiserslutern and competed in the majority of the AvD sponsored events with us -but was not initially a part of the Stiletto Rennsport enterprise. George and I formed a Company together to fabricate the prototype F-Micro car, but unfortunate I was sent back to JPL in California and Major Esser [as best as I know] was sent back to California with the USAF. From my best recollection, Bill Vanderford inherited the F-Micro project from Major Esser, and apparently also took over what was left of the Scuderia Stiletto assets. I never received any remuneration from my initial investment with the Steletto Rennsport enterprise and have had not hadfurther contract with Major Esser since my departure in 1964. Through the years I have continued to campaign a variety of race cars and motorcycle racing efforts with my Son under the banner of "Suceria Stiletto" and subsequently, the "Reiter Racing Team" and "Fiero Sud Racing". I would very much appreciate any information whatsoever concerning how the Emery has changed hands in California, and the whereabouts of Bill Vanderford. Bill Reiter, Tel. 252-633-1280 |

I bought it from Paul Emery at the London Race Car Show and raced in Germany before taking it back to So. California. I raced it at Santa Barbra, and Riverside before losing my job at JPL. I left the car with Bob Boggio, who I had invested some $$$ in his RCA F-Vee Kit Car enterprise. I had to leave the car with Bob when moving to NC, and never heard from him since. As far as I'm concerned: This is a STOLEN Car! |

he competed for 5 or 6 seasons as i remember, all except one in the 8500cc special saloons(one season at 1 litre). Wendy Wools, Triplex? and a finance company or bank sponsored a series too, although i cant remember the name. Mike had most success in 850, with a non space framed imp, originally White with a red stripe, sponsored by Automania, then he went to Yellow with a black stripe and from memory finshed racing in jet black. he was a front runner at most races but as a private entrant, preparing his own car and engine in his garage was lacking funds for tyres and new technological bits. I remember the arrival of the 5 speed gearbox (KNIGHTs?????) with the little string for selecting reverse. The most memorable race in his career had to be in the 1 litre category in around 1973 (give or take a year or two) at Silverstone. From memory 4 cars qualified with the same time and the race was hair raising with imps and minis 4 abreast coming down the old hangar straight to cross the start and finish line....i believe mike came second but i was only around 12 at the time, so i may remember this through rose tinted glasses!!! im desperate to find some pics of Mikes Imp so please let me know if you have any. thanks |

I found this site because I was telling my son about a strange Imp based car that I thought was made on St Kitts So.. now I know that the Hustler was made in Antigua. For the record, I can tell you that there were three or four in Montserrat when I was a VSO there in 1978-80. I think that one of the hire car companies had one or two. There was some pride that they were "local" Also, when I was at Loughborough Universtity in 73-78 the Transport Technology Department were building a hovercraft using an Imp engine (low profile, easy to mount, light) Regards Lewis |

| Why did you visit / what were you looking for ? Did you find it ?: | i found one Sunbeam Stiletto near my house to restore. it was all normal until the men said that it as a 998cc engine.
My questions: - did sunbeam produced the stiletto with 998cc engine? or only with 875cc? - have the stiletto rally engine? - i read that sunbeam produced some cars to homologue the rally cars. Where can i read about that? was the chassis numbers differences than the others? - how can i see on the car (chassis number, engine number,...) if it is all origin? |

I remember my father reading unsafe at any speed and being horrified. In fact before the Imp was launced word had got back that there was a problem with the Corvair and my father wanted to try one and evaluate it. Two models were ordered and sent to COventry. My father never tested them. Before he had a chance to drive them experienced Rootes test drivers had crashed both - they were lethal - and that did I think lead to some revaluation on the Imp rear suspension - no risks were taken and it became the car that Ayrton Senna loved. |

www.imps4ever.info/racing/rallies/ in your section "Alfabetical (sic) list of Rallying Impers", you don't seem to mention John Evans (from Oxford), who regularly did 60's home & international rallies in Imps (&, before that, in Tigers). http://www.imps4ever.info/racing/rallies/malkin.html In the first lines, it says "Barrie used to autocross". Much more than that - inter alia, Barrie finished 16th(?) and last finisher without fails on a Targa Rusticana (1968?) in "his wife's" standard Austin Maxi 1500 with a scratch navigator (Jim Crawford?) he'd found at the start, with no visible damage to the car. I consider this a brilliant performance by both crew members. I can look up my records to refine this if necessary. cheers /Chris Baron (this all looks rather too complicated for me) |

Congratulations on a Brillant site. I am currently in the process of putting the history of the Emery's; George the father and his two sons; Paul and Peter, all three who designed and built racing car individually or in collaboration with one another over the years. Paul and Peter are brothers. some ten years apart in age and its a common misconception that they are Father and son, a result I believe of an incorrect article back in period. I am in contact with Peter Emery who is alive and well in Devon, UK and have considerable history and photos of the Emery family in the early years, up till @1961. Much of this information up on the web hosted by The Historic Racing and Sports Car Club (HRSCC) here in New Zealand. http://www.hrscc.co.nz/emerysons.html At the moment I am working on the post 1961 years, however Peter and Paul became estranged after 1961 and had little contact with each other so any history I have of Pauls exploits with Imps after this time is limited. Looking for information on his Imp years lead me to this site. I am hoping that you can give me permission to use some of the information and excellent photos of Paul and his IMP years, on the THE HISTORY OF THE EMERYSONS web site. Full credit for the information and a link to the IMP site will be included. Kind regards Nigel Russell Auckland New Zealand |

I am currently rebuilding an old Drag Car that I am told used Imp front stub axles and king pins. In my ignorance i ordered a new set of pins but found they are not the correct size. The pins remove from the car are 18mm dia and 112mm long. I've had a chat with a cuople of people and they think it might be a Mark 1 stub axle. I'd take a photo and post it if i could, but there is no email address for you. A couple of things to point out on the stub axle is that it has a symetrical 4 bolt fixing location for what what I assume would be backplate for a drum brake installation, rather than what i've found on yours and other sites whch look like an asymetrical three bolt fixing. there i also a casting number on th stub axle which is P29061A. If you can shed any light on the origins I'd be greatful Regards Jim PS if you send me your email address I'd happily send you a picture of the hub and stub axle assembly. Thankyou |

Thankyou |

| Something about you - geography; language; mood; as you like...: | Hi Franka.
Sorry if this is not the normal way of getting in contact with you, but I could not find an email address to you... First of all, who am I?? Well, I bought Gary Hardings' lilac / mauve 1973 Sunbeam Imp Sport back in 2001 while I was studying in Oxford. The car was MOT'ed and running, but did nonetheless need som serious tlc. Accordingly I stripped the car to bare-metal and with the help of Imptechnics had the car totally restored to its former glory. Everything was kept original with the exception of 12" Minilites (not replicas) and a leather Motolita steering wheel - both being period upgrades. Anyway, in 2002 I brought my little Imp back to Denmark (where I come from), planning to register her there. I even sent the engine and box Malcom Anderson for a complete overhaul to original spec. A lot of money was spent and the result stunning!! The little Imp Sport was now exactly like I wanted it - looking flawless inside and outside and delivering a just as impressive drive. However lack of work - and therefore money - meant I was unfortunately forced to sell my Imp in 2004 which was certainly not part of the original plan. She went to a good friend of mine living in southern Denmark who still has her in his garage next to a mint Karmann Ghia and a Morris 1000 Super. However he has never registered the car and therefore also never driven it. I have tried several times to convince him to let me buy it back, but without much luck... :-( So I have now decided to look for a new Imp! And considering how well informed you seem to be about Imps and the whole Imp community, I was wondering if you would be so kind to help me out?? I have decided that if I can not have my beloved lilac Sport back, then my next Imp must be lefthand drive, as this makes more sense in Denmark - obviously you know as well as me how scarce these lefthand drive Imps are today... Furthermore - just to make the search even more of a challenge - I am only intersted in either a Stiletto or an original Imp Sport. And I would prefer the car to be fairly original and unmolested both visually and mechanically. Do you know of any such cars being for sale at this time?? Perhaps in Holland?? I hope you are willing to help me and to hear from you soon. Even if you just have some contacts for me rather than actual cars for sale, this would also be of interest... All the best, Anders Bilidt. |

I`ve visited your site several times in recent years, but until now hadn`t noticed that you state in the Sunbeam Imp Sport section, early models have a stainless `steel and black badge on the front and back`. My car is a 67 in Lincoln Green Metallic, black stitched seat interior, number plate light in the pod on the engine lid, which has a black & steel badge, but the front has `Sunbeam` script, like a Stiletto on the bottom left of the panel, along with the round centre-lock badge and the two shortened trim strips either side? I was asked by Des O'Dell to drive in the second world cup Rally for the Antigua team when one of their drivers dropped out because of family problems, but my licence was only a International Speed Licence and Bernard Unett's licence was a International Racing Licence, so he talked his way into the job. They only got as far as Portugal, when they hit a lorry in the mountains nr Lisbon. | Something about you - geography; language; mood; as you like...: | from about 1962 to about 1971 I was a fitter tester for the Rootes Group, later Chrysler UK
in about 1964- 65 I bought a ex test Stilleto, I 14 think, and built a Autocross car in which I competed quite successfully, the car was a 998cc. In 1968 I rebuilt the car as a Rallycross car fitted with 195 x13 front wheels & 8in x 13 rear , I had a long through crankshaft & shorter conrods which I bought from the works scrap-yard,the few and not many were made, that were not sent to scrap were given to Des O'Dell at the Comp Dept. ( the long blocks were never sent for scrap ) I think only about 6 or 8 were ever made. with a STD block I fitted a 21/32nd dural plate onto the top of the block ,the block was then machined to take wet liners that I had had made, 998cc Dia X 21/32nd longer = 1142 cc, the liners were a press fit in the block at the top and bottom I this gave the block stability, also in the sump there was a stainless steel plate that located the main bearings to the sump bolts, this made the bottom end rigid, every bolt & stud hole was helicoiled for easy stripping and rebuilding. The head was machined and polished and fitted with Cooper S valves, shorten stem, re machine grove for collets & stelite tipped, the wedge shaped combustion chamber was undercut at sides to accommodate the larger valves, Wills rings were used and a R21 or R23 cam with 40 DCOE's. A Jack Knight box with high First STD second low third & top, and a Jack Knight LTD slip diff The driveshafts which were 7/8 for the 875cc & 1 in for 998 comp cars and you could twist them like a corkscrew in competition, I had 2in tube with Triumph Dolomite donuts at the box end. All machining was done for me by Andy Chessman, and he was paid in lou with parts for a 1142cc motor for his hydroplane. The design was done by Andy & Myself. I also gave Des O'Dell 4 sets of liners, timing chains and other parts for use on Peter Harper's car, when you order parts to be made many firms will not make just one or one set, they will make many, when I ordered the liners they made me 12 sets for the same price. In I think 1969 Des O'Dell asked to borrow my engine to put on the test bed, to test against Peter Harper's engine, Peters had 132BHP at the flywheel, my motor had 135BHP ,needles to say I was a very happy man When I first ran the 1142cc in competition I would rev the motor up to 10,000 RPM, the max. reading on the rev-counter, I could not get another one reading higher, but after a few races when the needle reached the max. I would count up to 6 then change gear, it never blew up. Many names I have forgotten, Jim McBride was our Forman, Grant Gibson, Bernard Harris, Colin Mack I worked together for a few years when he joined out test group, I also remember Andy Dawson John Foden, I think it was John that gave me a chance to enter Rallypoint's , at Long Marston. One morning early, about 4 or 5 am I was driving a test car back through the village of Chipping Norton, I saw a shadow at the side of the road on a bridge, I new by the size and shape of the person who it was, It was Bernard Harris hand lineing for trout in the local Lord's river. by the way Reg Hargrave built a circuit car for Allex Clapper, I built the transaxle, I think Alex went out in the first race with this car and broke the lap record for 998cc at Croft. |

| Something about you - geography; language; mood; as you like...: | Would I be correct to say that the Imp was initially conceived and designed without a specific engine in mind. And that several outsourced engines were considered. I recall as a mechanic, attending a course at the BL factory in 1970 and the Imp was discussed, I'm sure I recall it being mentioned that the very first engine used experimentally was a cut down A series Mini engine.
That is to say the Rootes engineers skilfully reduced the Mini engine from four to two cylinders literally by cutting the engine in half and modifying the fuel and spark delivery to suit. It was obviously not successful hence the eventual and inspired arrival at the Coventry Climax. You will be aware that the same Coventry Climax engine was used for years as a portable fire pump engine. What you may not know is that the engine was factory converted to diesel for the same purpose! I can say from experience that this was not quite as 'portable' as stated. I wonder if anyone has ever married the diesel engine with the car and what performance was acheived. Best wishes Malcolm Waterman |

| Why did you visit / what were you looking for ? Did you find it ?: | Dear Sir,
for a couple of months now I do some careful research about Michael Parkes and in the end - hopefully - there will be a biography about a very colourful and multi-faceted personality. In November I had a long rendezvous with Brenda Vernor, his former girlfriend. She still lives next to the Ferrari factory in Maranello and she gave me addreses of drivers, colleagues and journos. Since then I do interviews and I do get more and more "connected". MP`s formative years in England are so long gone that I find it almost impossible to trace his early career. Therefore I concentrate my research on this continental years when he drove / worked for Ferrari, Fiat and Lancia: Michael Parkes / "An Englishman Abroad" / The Italian Years 1963 - 1977" Now for my request (at last!): On your Imp Site / Mike Parkes there are some remarks from his brother John (23.02.2006). Would you please be so kind as to let me know if you can provide my with his address / mail-address / telephone number? Brenda Vernor told me that he is in Africa but she is no longer in touch with him. Mark Hughes / MotorSport Magazine passed on a telephone number which is of no use any longer (+44 208 969 3425). Maybe you can help? Your support would be highly appreciated!! Keep up your good work for the Imp Site and thank you so much for your kind understanding. Best regards, Andreas Hackbarth |

Erling Jensen bought my car that had been regularly beating him in previous years at the end of 1991. My car which is the one in the picture was the penultimate Maguire Stiletto built and was the last square tube car. Brian Cutting's car was the last car bulit and was a one off round tube chassis car. This car was bought from Brian by Paul Gardner of Bournemouth who raced it at Castle Combe but was never able to get anywhere near Brian's pace.
I am in the picture in the red overalls. After the Stiletto I continued to race in the Castle Combe GTs with a 4.5 litre Skoda Tiga. Erling did a fair bit of drilling and lightening of the car after he bought it from me and did get down into the 1:06 second laps. The best that I ever did was 1:07.09 but Erling was a good couple of stones lighter than me. The car weighed 427kgs ready to go without driver. The head and inlet manifold were specials by Ray Payne and on the rolling road at Sigma Engineering in Dorset, Ray was somewhat amazed to see 118bhp at the wheels from a 998! http://www.imps4ever.info/racing/races/jensen.html If you want any photos or more info, please let me know. I was trying to find an article you once ran on Ernie Beck, who was main engine tuner for the Rootes Competitions Department but I got "Access denied" to www.imps4ever.info/tech/tuners_builders/rootes which was the address of the article. Copy was, I think, prepared by Ernie's son, Tony. My interest centres on accessing as much info on Rootes Comps as possible, to celebrate the 60th Anniversary this year of the founding of the Comps Dept. If you could put me in touch with Tony, I'd be very grateful. Also, I guess Andrew Millington, who is on your list of tuning parts suppliers, is related to Tim Millington, who worked at Chrysler/Peugeot Comps when Des O'Dell was Manager. Is this correct? I'd be very grateful for any help you can offer. I'm on SAOC Committee and an ARCC rep for that Club, but this request is my own. Incidentally I once tuned a 1971 Imp Husky with a 998cc engine. Didn't half move! But hopelessly front-light, therefore under-steered like crazy on loose surfaces and snow. I stick to a Series V Alpine these days but miss the Imp. Best wishes, Rod. |

in the mid 1970's I built an Imp engined solo motorcycle. it used a wideline featherbed frame, an 875 imp engine, a norton clutch & gearbox & a variety of other bits. The engine was mounted symetrically for solo use & I used a countershaft supplied by a guy near bristol who called himself stoke gifford engineering. I registered it in 1977 reg was VPU4S. I rode it for two years both in UK & Europe & sold it in 1979. I never heard anything of it for many years then I was waiting for a ferry across the channel & there it was! I told the chap riding it I made it-he looked puzzled & off we went. Then some years later I was again at the docks & saw it again! Checking the DVLA website shows that it is still taxed & in use. 31 years - not bad for a homemade bike I still have photos of the machine if anyone is interested! |
