| Comments: | Quite a surprise to find so many fans of Astaire. In an age before VHS, AMC, DVDs, my mother told me about the way Astaire and Rogers carried her and her friends through the Depression. She couldn't wait for the next picture. She remembered the breadlines and the despair of the time and the way the effortless perfection of their dancing carried her away for a few moments during those times. A dime a dance girl in a dance hall during World War I in Santa Catalina, she knew life and was forever captivated by their dancing. She passed on her emotion to me and I never tire of seeing Fred and Ginger's near perfection sliding and gliding across the screen. I can't help but see my mother and her sly smile as we watched them on late night movies. There is nothing quite like them. "They Can't Take That Away From Me." |

Watching Fred Astaire films just makes me feel good. He has that effect on me. Always he brightens up the screen. I would love to have a poster of the "Smoke gets in your Eyes" dance number with Ginger. Can anyone help? Cannot find anything on the internet from that scene. |

Fred Astaire brings back wonderful memories to me..Those lovely films with Ginger and others. One of my favourites is Easter Parade (it only happens when I dance with you). I watch it over and over again on my dvd player. Such a happy film - there is no-one quite like Fred Astaire! |

My father flew as a Navigator on Sunderlands in the Battle of the Atlantic and was decorated twice. He always though the USAmericans used the war to replace Britain as the primary World power, the lend-lease deal bleeding Britain dry of her resources, giving us, for example, out of date ships and Sherman tanks that were no match for the German Panzers ,and leading to our having to give our bases over to the USAmericans. The 'hands across the ocean' were into our back pockets. The World Bank and the IMF are doing the same thing today in the Third World and especially Africa. |
