Comments:In regards to your comments on Diane Vera's essay, I just read a horrifying account online of a multi-generational satanic cult whose leaders abused children and blackmailed prominent citizens of a town. This person's account belies what we think we know about the history of Satanism, because their philosophy was clearly gnostic and satanist, and yet they also worshipped the earth-mother Gaia, and were matriarchal. The family came from Scotland and England, but had been practicing in America for several generations. I know this is mind-boggling and maybe these were just deranged criminals who should not be related to either Wicca or Satanism as it exists today, but these stories came from a person who was abused in these rituals as a child in the mid '50s, in practices that were beyond horrible, and there is no reason to believe he was lying. It seems that they followed Crowley, as they studied all the same texts (including the Kabbalah and Eastern mysticism, but also Wicca and the Druids and MACHIAVELLI). So while I do believe that today there is little if any blending of these religions, there seem to have been some hybrids at least in the '50s. And their philosophy as stated seems to have come directly from the ideas of the medieval gnostics, other than their worship of the goddess. Make of this what you will, but I found it to be fascinating.

Comments:"This question really annoys me, as it displays how much the Christians have altered the word "Pagan" so that it is synonymous with the word "atheist."

Pagan means "non Christian" and is used in the Bible, which existed long before Wicca.

[I am sorry to inform you of this, Daniel, but the origin of the word "pagan" is from the Latin term paganus, which means "country dweller." It originaly had no derogatory intent, until the Christians modified it to do so. I never said anywhere on my site that the word "pagan" wasn't an ancient term with ancient origins.]

So you're annoyed by a false teaching of your own, and a sickeningly bigoted one at that.

[No false teachings here, Daniel. You need to read what I have written a bit more carefully.]

Further, you're a super idiot: "pagans" regularly speak as atheists and claim to be atheists when arguing against Christians. How you don't know that is incredible since it occurs regularly on Yahoo Answers, which has millions upon millions of members. You need to stop bullshitting and dwelling on your feelings all day.

[Um, Daniel, I have no idea what you have been reading all day on Yahoo Answers, but Pagans, including Wiccans, are not atheists. An atheist is someone who does not believe in any conception of Deity. Pagans, depending on their specific denomination, are polytheistic (believing in several deities) or in the case of Wicca, duotheistic (believing in a God and Goddess). Your ad hominems do not strengthen your arguments.]

Furthermore, why are you stereotyping all Christians?

[I never said that *all* Christians act this way. I said that many Christians do. The derogatory comments about Pagans are in the Bible, and all Christians read versions of the Bible and consider any deity that doesn't match the monotheistic worship that characterizes their religion as being *false.* Even one of the Ten Comandments makes such a statement. There are many liberal Christians who do not feel that way in practice, but what the Bible says is clear.]

Till I went to yahoo answers I thought of pagans as witches, but when the pagans refused to stop answering questions meant for atheists, and insisted in various ways that they were atheists, I stop thinking of them merely as witches.

[I had absolutely nothing to do with those so-called "pagans" who answered for the atheists on Yahoo Answers, and if you read what they were saying accurately, you should know that actual Pagans are not atheistic.]

As for Wicca being older than Christianity, are you are a super ultra moron? Why don't you look at the world-owned anti-Christian wikipedia or a site on the history of Wicca? It's a new religion you idiot. Read a history book on Wicca:

[Um, Daniel, I never said that Wicca was older than Christianity. I said it was based on tenets that are believed to precede Christianity, such as nature worship, i.e., pantheism, along with the concept of polytheism. Polytheism and pantheism were both around long before Christianity was around. Wicca itself is indeed a new religion born in the early 20th century, and I never said otherwise anywhere on my site. Please take note of this direct quote of mine that appears on the main page: "Wicca is a *modern*
Pagan
religion, and we are a growing alternative to Judeo-Christian dominance of Western theological thought and practice" (emphasis new). See what happens when you don't read carefully enough, Daniel? Are you sure it's me that looks like the fool? No offense, of course.
And as I said before, throwing insults and calling names doesn't make you sound any more accurate.]

http://sn.im/wicca

So, you think you're annoyed? You are sickeningly annoying.

[You would know, right, Daniel?]

Stop pretending to have the truth when you're clearly a loser and a moron.

[Ad hominems again? Nice, Daniel. You certainly know how to make your case convincingly.]

Here is more of the truth: http://sn.im/key2life

[I will check those sites out soon. Thank you for leaving them, and if they are filled with insults and inaccuracies about Wicca and Paganism, I will likely add a section of my site which deals with each claim point by point. I thank you for bringing these sites to my attention.]

Are you going to erase my entry and pretend all Christians are the same again? If you do, you will know that you a liar and can't stand Christians that don't fit your stereotype.

[No, I am not going to erase your guest book entry. I am not afraid to take criticism, even if it largely consists of ad hominem attacks. If you feel that I insulted all Christians, rather than just those who are bigoted, then I apologize despite your name-calling. It was not my intention to insult all Christians, but as I said up above, the Bible is filled with attacks on Pagans. I do acknowledge that there are many liberal Christians that question certain interpretations in the Bible, including the attitude expressed towards Paganism. --CN]

Comments:I'd cry, if I wasn't laughing so hard. Like Wicca, and the rest of the neo-pagan movement, it is clear that facts and the truth were not considerd when this was developed.

Wicca and neo-paganism has nothing what so ever to do with anthing that predates the early 20th century, when Gerald Gardner and his cronies started the whole thing.

[Um, Chazz...are you aware of the neolithic cave paintings depicting men dressed as the Horned God in hunting rituals? Gardner and his "cronies" started Wicca as we know it today, but they certainly didn't invent the idea of a nature-friendly religion that wasn't monotheistic or male-centric.]

While this may be a bona fide "religion",

[This displays your bias against religion right there, and this has obviously colored your response.]

it is only by virtue of so many people being fooled by your ignorance and out right lies, and you people bitch about Christians. At least Christians have history to back up their perspective.

[Chazz, there are numerous different denominations of Christians who argue about numerous historical details...so I'm not sure what aspect of 'history' you're talking about. Before Gardner, the idea of a non-Christian fertility religion appeared in books like THE WITCH CULT IN ANCIENT EUROPE and GOD OF THE WITCHES by Margaret Murray...this was decades before Gardner came on the scene, and though some of her conclusions were called into question, she was able to trace fertility religions (not Wicca, of course, as it's a 20th century religion) back into the ancient past. You give advice on education without doing enough research of your own.]

For the truth about many of the aspects of Wicca you list here, go to:

http://home.comcast.net/~uberrod/text4.html

and start your education.

[I've read many anti-Wiccan sites...some of them bring up good points, some of them exaggerate certain claims of Wiccans, and others engage in...yup, ignorance and outright lies. In time, I will compose an essay dealing with the incorrect assertions on that site on a point by point basis.]

As a practicing shaman for over 30 years, I laugh at all religions, but you guys take the cake.

[I'm sure, Charles, you will claim that I said Wicca goes back centuries, a common accusation against Wicca...I did nothing of the such, instead pointing out the ancient tenets that Wicca is based on, but making it very clear throughout my writings that Wicca is a 20th century religion. Hence, you are seeing what you want to see when you utter these criticisms, and I see many anti-Wiccan sites doing this very thing--CN]

Comments:When I was growing up my mother never raised us a certain religion, but I was curious so attended many churches, never finding a religion that suited me or my beliefs. Now that I have a child, and am married to a very open minded catholic, I am again desperately struggling to find a religion or belief to teach my daughter (that is far from the Catholic religion).

I just recently finished reading a book called The DiVinci code, which focuses on religions of paganism. When I finished I realized for the second time in my life that this truly may be the religion for me.

My first experiences paganism (I think) were when I was in high school and I started having dreams that would surprisingly happen. After much thought, I discussed it with my mother who revealed to me that my grandmother was born with what was called a veil over her face. It was said that who ever was born with these would have visions, and she did, many and they would all happen. I was told that it was believed that that this "gift" would be passed down to other generations. Has anyone heard of this? I found this to be exciting and interesting so my grandmother bought me some tarot cards that I used frequently and began doing research on witchcraft. For some reason I stopped doing research, but would now like to learn more about the different forms of pagan religions.

Does anyone know where I can learn more about different types? Do people who belong to these religions attend churches (If so, how would I go about finding one?)? Any thoughts or help would be very much appreciated!

I loved this web-site, very educating!

[Thank you, Annette, for your thoughtful post and your kind words. The best place to go online to research numerous different religions would be Religious Tolerence, the URL for which appears in my Links section on this site. Their data base on every religion known to humanity is quite extensive. --Chris N]

Comments:I saw the Wicca history and was surprised to see Robert E. Howard referenced. I wrote a page about Howard's god Mitra (
http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix/mitrahyb.htm).

Anyway, as I recall, in a letter Howard stated that he did not intend his Kull/Conan/Thurian/Hyborian Age stories to represent how he thought history actually took place, but they just served as the framework for his storylines.

Also, his Mitra was obviously taken from the Hindu god Mitra.

Thanks for the helpful page.

[And you're welcome, John, and thank you for your guestbook entry :) As you noted, Robert E. Howard's Conan, Kull, and Red Sonja's historical era, the Hyborian Age, is indeed fictitous, based upon rumors of an alleged "lost" age existing prior to the first human civilization accepted as real by modern archeologists, i.e., ancient Sumeria, which existed about 8,000 years ago. According to legend, which Howard built on quite creatively, the "lost" era that he called the Hyborian Age was based upon scattered rumors of many barbarian civilizations predating the rise of the ancient Greek civilization, as well as a few scattered remnants of unexplainable but very old artifacts found here and there, which could not be accounted for anywhere else in the historical era (which may mean something, and which also may mean absolutely nothing, of course). There have long been rumors of the ancient monotheistic male deity/supreme being known as Mitra (or "Mithra") who predated recorded history, and I noted this legendary status when mentioning it in my History section. The name may indeed have been borrowed from the Hindu deity much as fantasy writer H.P. Lovecraft created his equally popular and marvelous fictional dark gods (often called the "Cthulu Mythos," the former name taken from perhaps the most popular of all of those 'dark gods') by bastardizing the names and attributes of many of the ancient Sumerian deities (and yes Howard also created the fictional tome of evil magick called the Necronomicon). Further, the primordial serpent god Set, who also may have come from records prior to the accepted start of recorded history, was likewise adopted in both name and symbolic phenotype (the serpent) by the Egyptians as their god of evil, Seth (whose name is often spelled simply "Set," with no phonetic attempt to diffrentiate from the promordial serpent god of evil, but the etymology is quite clear in either case). In fact, there is a spin-off sect of Satanism known as the Church of Set, who have adopted the name of the most ancient interpretation of a being representing evil as a metaphor for their religion, since Set far predates the Judeo-Christian "Satan," who didn't even first appear until the New Testament.

Hence, Mitra, like Set, is one of those legendary interpretations of a certain aspect of the universe who is legendary, but who likely have a grain of truth, since it's now believed by modern theologians of an open-minded slant that monotheism certainly didn't begin with Zorostrianism, Judaism, Islam, or Christianity, but rather rose and fell during different periods of human history, due to different social, political, and economic factors. Unlike Set, however, Mitra appears to be considered much more legendary, and Howard appears to have built upon this monotheistic creator-deity in order to fit Him into his fictional Hyborian Age as the single Deity worshipped by the Cimmerians. --Chris N]

[Since real witches do not fly outside of their etheric or astral bodies, Lynn, I'm afraid that I...nor any other Wiccan on this planet...can help you there :) Should you choose to take up astral projection, which will enable you to fly (and without a broom, albeit not in your physical body), there are many different books that will provide you with the necessary lessons (though I have yet to master them myself). In fact, for a Wiccan training course on astral projection, you may want to try FLYING WITHOUT A BROOMSTICK by D.J. Conway. To all of my visitors:

Just a minor point here...as all of you who have been here before can plainly see, today I have just made a major overhaul of my guestbook, as the last one belonged to my former site partner, and was thus no longer accessible to me for management. I have re-entered most of the old entries from the original guestbook, but since they will all be recorded by the guestbook clock as having today's date, I placed all of the original times and dates in the body of each entry made before this entry by me. I have also deleted any e-mail addresses which I know for a fact to no longer be valid. All entries in the guestbook from this one onwards will have accurate times and dates recorded in the guestbook clock (Eastern standard time), and will not appear in the body of the entry.

Also, please note that this guestbook accepts HTML tags, so everyone familiar with HTML can use those tags to format your guestbook entry.

Thank you for visiting and supporting my site for the past two years, and I look forward to the next several years of maintaining this site for all interested in Wicca :)

Comments:You know in 1989 I became a Witch with Freya as my personal
Goddess, at that time not knowing about the Aesir-Vanir
dichotomy. Afterwards, through readings over the years I
have since discovered a lot of the logic that I unknowingly
built into it, includung a runebind I took as an oath that
happens to represent the Vanic 'hostage' trade. Anyway, I
was so pleased to find a Norse Wicca page that honored Freya
as prime deity. I'd be very interested in sharing
information with you, particularly since Chris N has a
literary background. There is not much out there on the
Vanic worship (at least in English). The subject fascinates
me. The recent movie "13th Warror" made an allusion (even
if unflattering) to what I always have believed, the Vanic
gods were from a different ethnic group altogether.
We have hints at a very strange ethnic group from
Celtic mythology, more African than European, then
there is an interesting possibility for a Mongolian
influence in Scandinavia, still noticable in Finland.
Anyway, feel free to e-mail me if you read this. The other
thing I was going to point out was something in your pages
about the Norse pantheon. Historically, Tyr and Odin are
probably one in the same. As religions get more complex
(with society) the gods split as 'all purpose gods' become
spread too thin. Tyr probably existed first as a war god,
but then had Odin split off. There is precedence for this in
other Mythologies, the war god is king, then falls to a
lesser position replaced with the god of writing. The place
'king of the gods' still held Tyr-War influences, but that
mantle was taken on by the god of writing. On the other
side Tyr becomes a god of justice, through the act of giving
his hand to Fenris, before that he really didn't have much
place anymore. In that society war was concurrently having
less of a prominant position. So it's fitting that the
remnants of the personification of violence becomes
associated with justice instead of rulership. Thus, in the
end we don't have a confusion about Tyr-Garm and
Odin-Fenris, Fenris killing Odin is the remnant of Fenris
killing Tyr and when someone asked about the wolf that ate
Tyr, poor Garm gets thrown in as a best guess because he's
the only one that fits the description. Isn't there some
correlation between this and a one handed god in Celtic
mythology? It seems like Lugh had one hand and was a god of
nothing, then he showed that he was good at everything but
not significantly better at anything to be a God of it but
eventually I think he became a god of Chess. Maybe I'm
getting this all mixed up, but it seems like there was a
myth about a one handed god who seems reminiscent of this
outdated war-god motif we see in Tyr.

Zolda'a

[Wow! Thank you, Zoldaa...this guestbook entry was practically an essay all in itself...and quite an incredible addition to my site. The possible connection between Tyr and Odin in the distant past, possibly as divergent outgrowths of the same god-form, has also been discussed by Norse scholar, author and mystic Freya Aswynn. Further, it has also been suggested by her, and enumerated by myself in the section on Norse Wicca on this site, that Garm was possibly confused with Fenris in the final conflict sequence with Tyr during Ragnarok, and was likely an error on the part of the Christian scribes who reinterpreted the Norse mythos when they wrote down their versions of the pantheon's exploits a few centuries ago...it was quite likely that in the original story, now lost forever, that it was indeed Fenris, and not Garm, that went mono-a-mono with Tyr during the last battle of the gods...and this is assuming that Ragnarok as originally written was actually interpreted by the Norse as the Pagan equivalent of armageddon, since unlike the Christians, Pagans tend to have a cyclical, and not linear, interpretation of the nature of things, and even the reinterpreted myth of Ragnarok does indeed herald a new beginning after the universe ended, which had strong cyclical undertones. Thank you very much for taking the time to share these insights with my visitors and I!--Chris N]

is in a group that teaches you how to use what nature gives
you. He showed me something one day he had learned he
layed his hand on my arm and it got hot I freaked at first.
He explained what it was and now I want to learn as much as
I can. All I can say is that you must have a great respect
for this stuff you learn.
