I remember when I met this man. I walked down the street on a summer afternoon that lead to the playground in BSK 3rd Stage and he was there with his team waiting at the playground to take on our team. I headed and joined my team mates. We were slated to play 16 over a side cricket match (with tennis ball) that day. It was 1991, we were 16 years old, and this man stood out as he was the coolest of the cool. I remember how he looked. Short but proportionately built, thick black hair, Tee shirt open at the neck, jeans clinging on to him. He was a cross between an angry young man and a super cool dude. I wondered "Who Is this guy?" I soon found out. They said he is Dobby, he is the captain of that team and he gets that name after the dog breed Doberman because of his anger and short temper. I smiled. There are some people you meet that are special, that instantly become part of your life. It was like that with Dobby. Soon after we met, we became inseparable. We clicked. For the rest of his life, Dobby was a part of my life. We did a lot together. We hitch hiked together, we laughed and laughed together- sometimes for reasons only we knew, we made endless fun of others together. Dobby was there when I met Satya and Cheeku. Together all four of us went to same college and spent years together. We used to meet even after joining different companies for work every evening and laughed at silly things. Dobby was there every time my Father was hospitalized and he was there when my Father died. Dobby was there when I met a girl named Sri, who later became my wife. He was there through the worst times and the best times I had. There are few people that know you as well as those friends you grew up with. I remember then, when we were very young, how much I loved his company. In fact, a few times, we sneaked out of our homes in the night, and we walked and roamed around all night, until the wee hours, just shooting the breeze and enjoying each other’s company. Our poor parents must have wondered what we were up to, but the truth is, we were causing absolutely no trouble, even as a young teenager, causing trouble was simply not in Dobby's character. I soon discovered how much more there was to Dobby than cool. He was brilliant. He loved Cricket. Especially playing. This was something I shared with Dobby, and we spent countless hours discussing the character of Sachin Tendulkar, Steve Waugh, Brian Lara etc or dissecting the famous past matches. Dobby knew about a lot of things. He educated himself on the sport, and he did a pretty good job of it. Dobby was a disciplinarian. He woke up early everyday and seldom missed his nets. He used it to express his feelings about his friends, his life and his family. He amazed his club “Jayanagar Colts”, excelled as a cricketer and his club team treasured him. I can't say we agreed on music. When he was young, Dobby’s taste ran and was limited to old Hindi classics to Kannada songs. Mine ran from Pink Floyd to Led Zeppelin to Guns n Roses. We spent a lot of time at my parent's house, and I played Zepplin One over and over and over again. Dobby couldn't stand it, and suddenly I couldn't find my album. It had disappeared. The mystery was solved suddenly when, by accident, I found the missing album tucked carefully under the carpet by the stereo. I had no doubt who the culprit was.....and from then we said music we didn't like belonged "under the carpet". Dobby had wonderful sense of humor. He looked at things with a slightly different eye. He was perhaps, a little cynical, but never, never petty or vicious. Like him, his humour was gentle. He saw the humour in almost anything especially with me or Satya or Cheeku or all three of us around. I remember him bursting out each time the counter man at the SLV canteen said “Aah one single”! Cheeku and I often used to tease Dobby and challenge him sometimes. We gathered to celebrate New Year at resort outskirts of city and after the whole night of celebration on whisky and sodas, Cheeku challenged him to jump into the swimming pool with his cloths on that chilly December night/ January Morning for just Rs.100. He just plunged into the pool and swam one lap and came back and asked us for that 100 rupee note. Dobby didn't mind, in fact he knew it was fun and he loved it. Later he walked around with his chest stuck out all morning. Dobby’s life wasn't easy though. There was something in him that would not leave him at peace. He had a great heart for people but that very heart was weak. He had two cardiac arrests. That shook all of us and his family was shaken the most. He battled both times, and never lost the fight within his own mind. I can't begin to imagine what he had to deal with. All three of us, I, Cheeku and Satya watched as he slipped into despair and paranoia both times. We could do nothing. His family could do nothing.
