My Uncle Wilfred Ketcheson was editor of the New Era, and my father Frederick Modeland worked there as well. My sister and I stayed with my grandmother Merle Modeland. We spent every summer in Melita, and they were the happiest days of my life in the fifties and erly sixties. My aunt Marian McLean lived in Melita as well and she and her husband Golden had a farm near there. These days were an important chapter in my life, which is why I am writing about them....if anyone has any photos of Melita during the fifties and sixties I would love to see them... |

Had such a great time in Melita last summer at the reunion - touching base with old friends and classmates. We got together at Oak Lake this summer for supper and a campfire at Merla's as result of that reunion. Thanks again to the organizers.... I've been married 25 years this summer to Mickey Adams and have just completed my 23rd year with the park's department in Moose Mountain Provincial Park (Kenosee). We have two daughters; one finishing an education degree and the other has graduated from SIAST college in Regina and is working with Farm Credit Corporation. | Comments: | Hello My family and I moved to Melita on a farm which used to be the Maclean farm in 1966. Our farm was about 7 miles north west of Melita. We went to school in Elva till grade six then went to Peirson from grade 7 to 12. We grew up with the Bloomers, Reddaways, Roblins, Deplats, Roblins, Pattersons and several other families.

| Comments: | Our 125 Celebrations had less than 200 guests preregistered by Friday July 31. By the time the smoke cleared we had over 1200 signed in by Sat. night. There will be a a fairly complete list of those attending posted on line once we get it compiled. Some verification has to be done first so it will take some time. Unfortunately quite a few people did not sign in so will not be included, even though you might know they attended. |

| Comments: | Carl and Ruth Swanson bought the Jim McCallum farm a half mile north of town in the fall of 1940.
They moved from Walchope Saskatchewan with their five children, Arnold-Gordon-Gloria-Arlene and Lauretta. They had the buttermilk route for a number of years, had two more children- Marlys and Ken. In 1953 Dad built our house in Brandon, and left Arnold and Gordon to run the farm. Dad passed away in 1970, Mom in 1987, Arnold in 1996 and Ken in 2007. |

In 1893 arriving on the ship 'City of Rome'May 22-1893 at Ellis Island,NY City from Glasgow via N.Ireland. Went to Melita. Records show in 1897 a Michael kerr having a 1/4 of land at Township 4, Range 27, section 35 which I beleive would be a bit south of Melita.Their first son Robert kerr born 1895 Sec 35-4-27 - died of croup Aug 25-1901 Physician was Dr McDonald.They where listed as presbyterians.My grandfather John (Jack) Kerr 1903-1946 , his sisters Ethel Kerr(Waddell), Ida Kerr(Livingstone), Una Kerr (Kidney) where all born in the Melita area.Wondering about cemetary history to locate where a Robert kerr is buried.Is their any local historians or cemetery records? The Naming of a Town - Melita by Rosemary Malaher Manitoba History, Number 19, Spring 1990 The story of the name of the town of Melita has particular interest for Melita L. O’Hara of Seattle, Washington. She admits to having a heated argument with the daughter of the first postmaster. That lady told of her father’s meeting with the founders of the town to fill in the post office contract. The gentlemen turned to the King James Version of the Bible, and found in Acts, Chapter 28: “After we had escaped, we then learned that the island was called Melita.” Rudnyckyj, in Manitoba Mosaic of Place Names, adds that this was the ancient name of the island of Malta. Mrs. O’Hara has another story. Her great uncle was Joseph Cauchon, Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba from 1877 to 1882. He is said to have named the town for his God-child and niece, Melita Roche of Quebec City. In the discussion with the postmaster’s daughter, Mrs. O’Hara offered the explanation that, since her great-uncle was Lieutenant-Governor, possibly the request for the name was channelled through his office. The chosen name being that of his young relative, it naturally would have met with his approval. Thereafter, each of the parties took credit for the naming of the town. As the reader might surmise, Mrs. O’Hara was given her mother’s name. |
