http://rickieleejones.com/cover-vote.htm Good News! Rickie's next CD - Balm in Gilead - is due for release on October 20 and it sounds great! More info below.

Rickie is trying to decide between two cover art designs for the CD. She would like your help. Please go to

http://rickieleejones.com/cover-vote.htm

and vote for your favorite. Rickie needs to decide tomorrow so get your vote in now.

About Balm in Gilead:

This CD has already been described as Rickie's masterpiece. It is old school Rickie Lee with a voice that has grown deeper, yet is ageless. Some of the songs on the CD took two decades to finish and this is reflected in the depth of the lyrics as well as the style diversity. This heartbreaking yet rewarding compilation covers the full range from despair to innocent love.

I have one of those L-shaped sofas; tonight I had a cat on the back of each end!

Have tickets to see RLJ on 31 January and weather-permitting, will go six hours west to see her at a small club in Asheville, in the mountains, and a couple of other ladies will meet me there! I've found a yoga studio where I want to take a class. Also want to have lunch with a lady from work (we have offices there) who is my friend but I haven't met her yet. A little winter outing would be nice.

...and someone special sent me a card and I will cherish it forever.

Hi all! Happy Happy New Year!

My big ending of the old year was a grand 60th surprise birthday party for my Mom - She's a new years eve baby - So we invited her family and friends to Fat Matt's for BBQ and live music from my friends who graciously took time out on new years eve afternoon to play between gigs just for mom. She hadn't seen or heard me sing live for a long time. She was so completely over joyed over the whole affair and I was accused over and over of making my mama cry ;) (tears of joy of course). There was no way to top the afternoon so Steve and I went home and took a nap so we could make it to midnight and we sat quietly watching CNN's party coverage from Key West to New York.

I've got such a good feeling about this new year...for all of us.

Hi all... winding down (up?) to a new year! My holiday was peaceful, with my parents, drinking wine, eating pizza, watching movies... being lazy and yeah, quite spoiled. (blush) They're so much fun. At my age I'm really blessed to have them. I enjoy their company immensely. (Pizza on Christmas Eve, more traditional fare on Christmas...)

G., glad you had a nice holiday!! Cheers!

Steve is here for a couple of weeks! ...arrived last night. We're enjoying the most beautiful autumn weather and going to the mountains next week.

Wish I could have gone to Sellersville but as the old cop-out goes: "you can't be everywhere." What's a miracle is that I met you this summer, we had an amazing time on an exceptionally hot summer afternoon, and went to see Rickie Lee! ...and I left quickly, didn't I? My pregnant friend was having cramps. She had her baby girl a couple of weeks ago and Mother and baby are doing just fine. She amuses me with her comments about "motherhood is a full-time job!" Hi Zabic, thanks for dropping by, good to know you're ok. And congratulations on your new job. Math or music related? Does that mean the Little Lighthouse moved with you? Checked it the other day and it was still in the air... Spared from devastation but having to take care of many refugees can also weigh heavy on a place and its inhabitants. What happened in New Orleans should only have been a bad Hollywood movie, like we see on a weekly basis on tv. still. I just wish the industry will now not waste all that money on special effects and such and give to those who need it. Anyway, to see the beauty in people and life makes the pain and sadness for all things tragic somewhat bearable, but not less present in thoughts. It's a horrible thing from reality but so true and necessary too: Life Goes On.

Rickie Lee Jones, Birchmere, 7.25.05
In the full blossom of her life, Rickie Lee Jones now has the voice of 14 completely baked angels on an eternal hash-oil toot. She is so intense, so keyed, in her vocal delivery that sometimes she simply dispenses with consonants altogether and just makes do with vowels -- and yet even in these exalted moments her meaning, her dream-algebra, the holy truth of Woman-Mind, is clear as purest water.

This, my friends, is an Artist.

Last night at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Rickie Lee teetered on the edge of reason, moaning ecstatically her oneiric verses, hopscotching through Illusion, through Maya, like an acid waif through cornflowers, head-faking a slip over the edge into jibbering irrationality but never falling. Always recovering, a perfect high-wire act.

Looking dreamily out into the audience: "So many stories... So many stories in this room. And I know 'em all. It's hard work!" She giggles, gamine, knowing she's reminded us of who else thinks mere living is "hard work."

Jesus Christ with an SM-58, that woman can sing the living shit out of a song! She's not particularly concerned with hitting notes on the head (although perfectly capable of it) but instead she's a sovereign interpreter, sliding into notes, risking blowing everything but supremely confident that nothing is irretrievable, squeezing every drop of meaning out of the lyric. Each line fraught. Pregnant. Loaded.

Music for adults.

There's nothing that has ever been
That isn't loved
By someone who waits
Toeeeeaaeeeiiin!
Exactly. Yes.

Near the end of the gig, Rickie began to introduce a song called Tell Somebody (Repeal The Patriot Act Now). In a perfect world, were yin and yang are in perfect balance, you'd be able at a moment's notice to drop out of hippie-waif mode and into incisive-pundit mode and hurl perfectly reasoned polemic at your tormentors -- only to slip back into your customary dreaminess when you're done.

But that's not Rickie Lee Jones. Her argument from the stage, such as it was, appealed to emotion rather than logic, intuition not facts. A woman's argument. A yin argument. An argument from Yoni.

This is not at all a knock against her. I wish fervently to find in my own mind the ability to summon a "woman's argument." If more of us had "woman's argument" inside us, the world would be a safer and saner place.

Rickie Lee stood on stage and argued as an artist. That is, the reason she is so utterly spellbindingly good as a singer is that she spends all her time in Artspace, where empathy and intuition and love and irrationality are the currency, a place where linearity and causality are banished. She sees the world through those eyes. Only those eyes.

And that was the world that spoke through her mouth when she spoke of the Patriot Act.

She irritated someone in the audience with her circularity, this Washington audience, this unreliably sympathetic Washington audience.

"Sing a song!"

It's like a boot to the chest. It's like a jackboot in the face. It's like watching a leather riding boot grinding down on a butterfly. What has just entered the room and crushed its cigar out on your heart is what it's like to live in George Bush's America. It feels like an axe on your neck.

"Sing a song!"

You know what the guy's thinking, right? (Of course it's a guy.) You know what battle this mouthbreather thinks he's fighting don't you? It's this one.

It's where all interaction between humans is reduced to an economic transaction. Where every man is either a pimp or a john, and every woman a whore. Where art is utterly meaningless, because the Customer Must Be Satisfied. I paid thirty-five fuckin' bucks to watch Rickie Lee Jones sing, and I don't want to hear a bunch of crap about love and peace and the fuckin' Patriot Act! Hey, jukebox! Hey, fuckin' Song Machine! I put my nickel in, now fuckin' SING!

I too try to live in Empathy-Land with Rickie Lee, and maybe that's my problem, but I fail utterly to understand Frother assholes who profess to love music. Are they so completely dense that they don't understand that the words in the songs they claim to love and understand are identical to the words they try to forbid Rickie Lee Jones from saying between the songs?

Rickie Lee, all 5'2" of her, all dreamy-hippie-waif-gamine of her, was boiling furious.

"I stood up here for an hour and a half singing for you, and now that I want to say something, that's what I get? Get the fuck out of here!"

No one moved. No one dared.

"I'm glad you decided to stick around, but don't you ever fuckin' tell me to shut up!"

We didn't get an encore.

Am just back from my fabulous trip to see RLJ; Teddy was so great with Rickie and Paul. The interplay between Paul/Rickie and Teddy was precious to see. ...and Rickie DOES smile when he sings. He's very good with those two. It’s obvious Rickie respects him very much.

Rickie had a fire in her spirit, her emotions were sharp and she looked absolutely beautiful, radiant; it was nice to see her spend so much time at the piano. Every now and then I'd look at Lisa and we'd both have that knowing-but-amazed look so common at her concerts; and I’d look at Brain and he’d be beaming with pleasure or meditating on the beauty of her sound.

…so Lisa came from Pensacola, FL, I took a bit of a journey, as did Brain, and we all had a wonderful time. We’ve all heard the advice to “live each day as though it were your last.†Yesterday was one of those days. I am elated, overjoyed and grateful to everyone who was a part of this experience.

http://www.mizar5.net This is an email from ON THE ROAD, Rickie Lee Jones and her guitarist Teddy Kumpel on their way to Camden:

"I am so thrilled to play with Rickie as I’ve been listening to her music since high school. I wore out both the first records and Pirates and had to buy new copies. My good friend Paul Nowinski has played with Rickie quite a bit over the last 5 years or so and I ran into him at Iridium for the Eddie Gomez presents Andy Ezrin show. He said simply, “Hey Teddy, do you know any guitar players who would like to go on the road with Rickie Lee Jones?” I tried not to drool and said, “ya, me".

Then we got in touch with her management and set it up. I didn’t get to talk with her personally until the day before we left. She said, “do you know my music?” I said “you bet". Then she said, “it’s hot here, my AC broke".

No rehearsals. No set lists. Just intuition. This is what it’s like to play real spontaneous music.

We’re getting along great. She is really encouraging me to sing backgrounds for her. At first I was reluctant because I just love her voice so much, but it makes her smile when I sing, so I do it. This is the most pleasurable background singing experience I have ever been in. Both with guitar playing and singing it seems that the only way to play with her, make her happy and keep the gig is to follow her like a shadow. I thankfully have a lot of practice following people. When I was a kid I used to make my Mom and sister laugh by saying what they were saying at the same time they were saying it.

My good friends Tony Scherr and Kenny Wollesen played with her on “The Evening Of My Best Day” with Bill Frisell and they toured Germany with her so I had a lot of good advice on what to expect… or more so what expectations to leave behind.”
-Teddy Kumpel

Hey guys... ah, when i saw those lyrics in here (thanks Arlean) i just had to spin the old vinyl...

A lot has happened, good stuff, bad stuff in London...

If you click the link, it takes ya to Bospop Weert, i had to go there for work, the publishing company i work releases these books about cities and regions.. we're doing Weert now, so i was sent to Bospop, the festival. Ha. Sure didn't mind that one! Anyway, We did an interview with Steve Lukather for Mizar5 a while ago, Steely Dan related. But he was also in on RLJ's Pirates... i did ask him about those days, but i asked a lot of questions at the time and it was just too much. Maybe i'll try again some day :-)
I also met his webmaster and associate backstage and well, if you scroll down you'll see for yourself :-)

"Pirates" will remain my fav album if even though Magazines and the most recent ones also ring in their own charm... It's the overall feel i remember from listening then... Her debut album was stunning and i just couldn't believe it when i heard Pirates. The lyrics, those stories, the orchestration of the music, the musicians involved! It was perfection. Literature. I still feel it's her naked creative essence, as well as a very POSITIVE one. The purity of it all.

"Oh Wild, and the Only ones, tell me where you are"...

Hi Brain, I cannot decide about July 25 and VA. Do I want what's behind door #1? ...buy an airline ticket, book a room, take time off work and have fun; door #2? ...go work in Falls Church VA (ugh) for a week and thus have my lodging and travel paid but have to pay pet-sitting. The other lady who will be working in F. Church probably would love having a traveling partner; would probably love Rickie Lee.

It's about time for me to decide or just say "no." It's a significant trip for me, either way.

Feel free to call if you want to discuss. Thanks... d.

I say this was no game of chicken
You were aiming your best friend
That you wear like a switchblade on a chain around your neck
I think you picked this up in Mexico from your dad
Now its daddy on the booze
And Brando on the ice
Now it's Dean in the doorway
With one more way he can't play this scene twice
So you drug her down every
drag of this forbidden fit of love
And you told her to stand tall when you
kissed her
But that's not where you were thinking...
How could a Natalie Wood not get sucked into a scene so custom tucked?
But now look who shows up
In the same place
In this case
I think it's better
To face it ---
We belong together
We belong together

Once Johnny the King made a spit ring
And all the skid kids saw a very, very proud man
And he entwined her in his finger
And she lay there like a baby in his hand
And climb upon the rooftop docks lookin' out on the cross-town seas
And he wraps his jacket across her shoulders
And he falls and hugs and holds her on his knees
But a sailor just takes a broad down to the dark end of the fair
To turn her into a tattoo
That will whisper
Into the back of Johnny's black hair
And now Johnny the King walks these streets without her in the rain
Lookin' for a leather jacket
And a girl who wrote her name forever
A promise that ---
We belong together
We belong together

Shall we weigh along these streets
Young lions on the lam?
Are the signs you hid deep in your heart
All left on neon for them?
Who are foolish
Who are victim
Of the sailors and the ducky boys who would
Move into your eyes and lips and
Every tear
That falls down on the neighborhood now
I said "Bird, we just gotta tell them"
And they turn and ignore us
And the only heroes we got left
Are written right before us
And the only angel who sees us now
Watches through each other's eyes
And I can hear him
In every footstep's passing sigh
He goes crazy these nights
Watching heartbeats go by...
And they whisper ---
We belong together
We belong together

thanks brain.............

snakes. did you know that mature snakes save their venom? they don't want to bite. young poisonous snakes are most dangerous (US varieties) because they tend to bite and inject (wasting) too much venom.

most people who are bitten (most, not all!) don't take the advice of "leave the snake alone."

i believe it... the stats about honeybee deaths vs. poisonous snakes.

was always interested in the cultures that celebrate the cobra... going out each year and putting them in baskets... taking them into villages to do what they do with them, to "honor" the cobra... and later taking them back to the surrounding wilds.

i have a picture to show ya. i don't know how to insert one, though.

yes, the truest friendships come from heaven or our brains. and brain is a true friend. because walking with marcus and i he understood the ghetto is filled with waterfalls and a sense of belonging and community investment.

i am going to share something. brain touched me as we walked over to mindy's, the one with the over priced organic tomatoe plants, that one could never put into words exactly what this place is like. that was kind.

we want to live on the shore. or in the mountains. a lake. but this is something that you make. any where you live, is where it can come, this peace. we all have that.

but no matter where it is, where you choose to live is perfect. you make it that way.

always trust a two legged frog they say, with polka dots.

i think november in nyc would be the place and the time. but the summer is always long and things can happen. if you make them happen.

come on, come on, get me out of the house!

White Lies and Black Outs

Happens so, the artist Mary Hatch is also in Michigan...

Zabic, you looking for a job in Baton Rouge or also considering leaving there? Saw "Southern Comfort" again the other day, Keith Carradine, Powers Boothe, Fred Ward and others... about some national guards in the swamps and messing with some Cajuns... i saw it years ago and the atmosphere of the swamps and forest somehow kept ringing in my mind... the same for the movie "Deliverance" with Burt Reynolds. That scene with the banjo-player is great... and again strangers in an environment they know nothing about, people they know nothing about... Anyway, hope you'll find a good job, either in Baton Rouge or elsewhere...

Back to work me goes, it's a Sunnyday bit it's fine...

Merci(y) ...Here in Michigan we are getting ready for another snow storm. ...I will not say more.

Here is a little snippit for y'all to ponder. Peace G&co.

"There will be,
in the next generation or so,
a pharmacological
method of making people love their servitude,
and producing dictatorship without tears,
so to speak,
producing a kind of painless concentration camp
for entire societies,
so that people will in fact
have their liberties taken away from them,
but will rather enjoy it, because they will be distracted from any desire to rebel by propaganda or BRAINwashing,
or BRAINwashing enhanced by pharmacological methods.
And this seems to be the final revolution."

Hey. Zabic, Brain and others. Hope you're all well, realtime life's busy.
Heard Last Chance Texaco on radio past Sunday, it was a listener's request and she had a nice tale to share. I was back in 1979 for a few minutes :-)

Great news! I heard about a Job opening up on at the White House in a few years. ...it will be a day of great opportunity for us all. Hang in there M'on.

Thanks G.
Looking forward to spring has a simular feel in Politics these dAzE. All I see is white-ness around me...and its so cold out there. I think someone asked Gandi what he thought of western Civilization and he responded with something like "I think it would be a good Idea"

Peace.

G! Sorry I'm so silent these days. I keep coming over here to read every now and then, but I usually don't post. I'm ultra busy working onmy thesis. I'm looking for a job too. I still haven't found anything and it scares the sh*t out of me. But I'll be fine.

"Spring this year,
has got me feeling,
Like a horse that never left the post..."

Good heavens that woman can sing so fine!

Still this frozen tundra chokes the darling buds below our sights. Inside and all around however, "Pop Pop" is blasting with hopes that these epic tones will melt all the snow from my window. Nothing is as silent as a country under snow.
PS. Here is one of my favorate Hafizez...

WHERE DOLPHINS DANCE
Again
The work starts
As soon as you open your eyes in the
Morning

Hopefully you got
Some good rest last night.

Why go into the city or the fields
Without first kissing
The friend

Who always stands at your door?
It only takes a second

Habits are human nature-
Why not create some that will mint
Gold.

Your arms are violin bows
Always moving.

I have become very conscious upon
whom we all play.

Thus my eyes have filled with warm
Soft oceans of divine music.

Where jeweled dolphins dance
Then leap into this
world.

-Hafiz

(I wonder if Steely Dan ever thought to write "You Never Gonna Do It Without Hafiz On. . . Oh No!")

Happy and Mary Mint to you all !

sunday would be good. i will keep my phone on vibrate for you. in my back pocket, where it belongs.

why did hunter end it all? he wanted to go out the way he wanted to go out. hip pain, getting old, ya know that wasn't about him. and only he could get away with it. i hear the family is going to blast his ashes out of a cannon or fireworks all over woody creek.

i went fly fishing there once, in woody creek, and the guy upstream told me if we went to the tavern around two hunter s. thompson would be there on his fifth c.r.

i was too afraid of him to go. and don henley was there that morning this guy said.

hey the guy got out there for kerry, for a change, and that was great. and i just think he saw growing old right around the bend and said fuck that shit.

i never understood his love of guns or the nra, but i loved his words.

he made you laugh and think and get really pissed off.

some heros. only in america.

i have a cat named pixel. she is my favorite. her khol lined eyes or the way she talks to me in the way she does. she does talk to me, back to me.

but pixel, the name of a cat that walks between walks and dreams, backward and forward in time.........a fairy tale, a story. always a story. i think my pixel has lived up to it.

since lulu died, pixel lays next to the dog as lulu did before she died. and goes up to her in walk and curls around the world the dog walks at that moment.

girls do that.

i wish brain would call me because i kind of lost his number when i changed cell phones. got i shiney flip up that i can't figure out with ducks on it.

Brain! Yes, abour friendship, the mind, those etherian worlds. You know, there's so much poetry in the past, the past of the early PLP days and such ... Arlean writes like words are the pixels of a photograph, each word a pixel, so detailed and providing this vivid image of it all.
In a way it's all amazing, right ... I like the PLP what it is now, nice people in there, lots of warmth. The FFTP is heavy sometimes, but that's okay too.
And i browsed the photo section of the PLP the other day, a picture book.

Listening to singer-songwriters a lot and discovering new music each day!

snow is in flurries tonight and coldness returns to it's bitter roots, but i looked around my garden today none the less. it will return.

snow drops, a small white flower came last week and it was the first sign that winter is still here but it will be going soon.

what an odd winter, 60 on monday and 10 today. such changes.

what an odd winter, people leaving, others coming into the world. it's always moving. and then the cat stops still. lays down and turns harden from life.

what an odd life.

no gina, i did not watch the snl gig. i own it on vhs. getting some more clippings and will gather them up with the ones from last year and will have about twenty rare photos to share.

been listening to so much music of late. i would call it mostly american roots with a slip of the tounge and a twang and subtle messages. so glad that green day and steve earle won those grammys for what they had to say. and ben harper also with those blind boys of alabama.

it's a good year thus far i feel. i think the garden is going to be very colorful once again.

Tack, Marge! Yep, it was i and there's no real hurry so take your time. all the M5 interviews are my work, so is the entire website actually :-)
but if you have the time and went to see some nice music and such, feel free to write, like you used to do for that magazine when we first met :-)
perhaps you can rekindle that passion of yours again :-)

A nice interview! Did you do it?

Hi Marge!!
Your email bounced back sometimes, so i'm glad you're in here and doing fine. The interview in Mizar5 is indeed the one that could be translated, if you can find the time for it. Plus i'd be interested in a little something more about his project for children, because that's really cool, to explain music to little ones :-)

Ok, gotto go now but laters again!

Hi everybody! ...long time no see... Anyways, I hope that you are all well. Are ya?

I am, have been a bit crowded here, and have a cold but apart from that things are fine. Work is progressing but of course I wish I was two things would go much faster. The kids are growing, body and soul. Martin is doing a space special at school, so he's asking a lot about white dwarfs and black holes and such. Tuva talks about how we will go out for walks with her babies when she's older and I'm a grandma.

Was trying to catch up a bit below, and I couldn't really find the interview w Jojje, but I found a link to something at Mizar5!? I could translate, but it depends on the size of the interview. I think. He's great! We saw him in concert - with the kids - the Zzzoppa tour. Great fun to hear him explain music and musical terms to the children!

We just talked about him the other day, someone recommended "Made in England" by his group Made in Sweden. How do people come up with these names? :-)

Take care, time to start the workday...

Hugs!!

hi Arlean. Those are real beautiful, i saw something about it on TV the other day, this is litterally putting things into perspective!
Will you watch the old Saturday Night Live episode with RLJ?
Whenever i listen to the 1982 recordings, it amazes me how the mood and feel of that year/time rings through ...

Hey!
Traffic's very slow in this hidden corner of the cyber universe, right? Makes no difference, it's still here, floating in space.
Been working a lot lately on the new Mizar 5 and it's a wonderful thing to do, to discover new and interesting websites. There are so many voices out there :-)
Okay, hoping everyone is doing fine and like me perhaps, waiting for Spring to shower with optimism ..

Welcoming 2005... I wish you health and happiness.

There are good things in this old world, too, and we have to stay positive to keep those positive efforts and situations moving along. The unspeakable losses in Asia serve to show us how much more we can do for our fellow countries. ...how much more we can do, at all.

I think Marg is returning from a trip about now, and her mailbox may be full. She's been traveling a lot since the start of the holidays.

Gina, I think of you every time I visit my kitchen (often! many times daily!) when I see a 1950's vintage cannister that holds my teabags. ...and of course, there are the two bears. They are happy and content on the Victorian loveseat.

In 2005 I want to keep a slower, steady pace and do more yoga; avoid negative stress, listen to more music. I guess it's about learning from life's lessons.

Gina, I enjoy your other websites too!

Imagine what could be.

hey Brain!!

Ah, may 2005 bring you a very warm and GOOD year too. And yes, we'll keep this little den open, this silent corner from where we can look at the past and present or simply 'be' some.
A lot happened in the world recently, bad things, but there's also a lot of positive things going on. Maybe it's essential now to BE positive ourselves and not let things get us down.

Margareta, i was preparing an interview with Georg Wadenius for Mizar 5 and it's so very nice to be talking about the Swedish jazz, like Rigmor Gustafsson and her boyfriend Magnus Lindgren. I found an article and they mention Jonas Kulhammar, ha, the cd you sent me. Perhaps it's nice if you would like to translate the interview with Georg in Swedish? Anyway, i'll let you know. But i sent you an email and it bounced ... So that's why i'm writing it in here!
Ok, everyone be safe and well

Worldwide Christmas greetings!

Diana Krall's interesting. She has a lot of energy and puts so much soul and maturity into performance. She's a performer of few words but when she speaks, her words say a lot. When she dedicates something "to my husband," it's really sweet. Man, she doesn't look 38. When I first saw her a few years ago, I thought "25."

She knows the art of subtlety. ...and plays with great backup artists. ...and treats them with such deep respect. She's humble.

Nice, dry wit. Sometimes she can seem nervous. She's natural, I like that.

It's a wonderful time for music and it's great to see so many females in the business and doing well. When Rickie Lee first became known, remember how few females were into musical performance?

Merry Christmas to you in many languages, but mostly the language of the heart. xx

Hi Arlean! Merry X-Mas & A Happy New Year to you too.
Yes you are right, there's only one Diana Krall. But i was speaking in terms of a certain style of vocalists and she's no exception to that 'rule'.
I listen to her as well, but it took me a while and yes, she plays the piano wonderfully. Have you ever heard her sing Island Palace? It's pianist Geof Keezer's cd Turn Up The Quiet and Diana sings a few songs, among which this Island Palace. I prefer this to some of her other work. It's a matter of taste i guess :-)
