Way I see it is we're evolving. Becoming more aware and educated on health issues, including the effects of 2nd hand smoke. The smokers who say non-smokers shouldn't go into facilities where smoking is allowed isn't really fair. Or smoking in the work place, we should just quit? How would you like it if the scent of a co-worker's perfume make you ill? Say you were stuck in a small cubicle with no ventilation, and she kept spraying this foul odor all over the place, including you? Burns your eyes, gives you a headache, nauseated. And you had to go home everyday with the smell lingering on your clothes? It's the same for us. I had to quit my last job because they ignored the no-smoking law and let people smoke anyway. My allergies were so bad I was taking pills non-stop. Soon I had severe sinus infections and earaches. I did quit working there because I couldn't take it anymore. I don't think it's right, but that doesn't really matter. I have no voice and I give up.

//http://webpages.charter.net/imstillalive/

Hello My Name is Mitchell, I just found out back in March that I have Emphysema, a irreversible degenerative condition. Unfortunately I found out a little late and my case is very severe. Back on the 25th of March, I went to the hospital with complaints of pain and shortness of breath. Thankfully they treated me like a cardiac patient and rushed me in. Come to find out, I had pneumonia real bad and they had to drain 3 gallons of fluid from my lungs, 2 of which had to be removed by the doctors hand because the fluid was so thick it would not drain thru the hose. After or during, I'm not sure, removing the fluid they found I had 6 different lung infections. I was in bad shape and at the end of it all. They rushed me into surgery and removed the rotten lung portion from my body, but couldn't remove the entire lung without a replacement. I smoked for 35 years of my life and now I only have a little time left because of smoking! I can't go back in time and save myself but I sure could pass with comfort if I could help some of you quit the habit and save your lives. I made a little website for the public to see, nothing special, just a little info there about me and my illness and the affects of smoking. I'm trying to start up a little club of non smokers. Just 2 of us in the club so far! :) told you it was small. Anyway I originally made the site so I could keep track of how long I quit, how much money I saved, and how much time of my life I saved by quitting smoking. If you would like me to make you a counter just come talk to me. Maybe we can help each other live a little longer so we can help some people worse off than us. If you have time come see me at http://webpages.charter.net/imstillalive/ - If you don't, thats ok, just please don't smoke! God Bless You All!

http://www.illinoissmokersrights.com/ update:

In Loving Memory Of Garnet Dawn

Garnet passed away very peacefully during a nap on Monday, April 20, 2009. It was sudden, very peaceful, and completely unexpected.
Garnet has been a warrior in this battle for a very long time and took it seriously enough to actually fight through the red tape and bureaucracy needed to make Illinois Smokers Rights a non-profit group.
It was largely through Garnet's efforts that many of the individual yahoo rights groups for a number of different states were set up, and she took on the role of moderator for many of them in their infancy - making sure that spammers didn't fill them with ads.
Garnet put a lot of thought and work into promoting our efforts with Heartland, a Libertarian organization that has come to recognize the importance of the Free Choice in Property Rights movement as an important symbol of individual freedoms being under attack.
Garnet was a Midwest Regional Director of The Smoker's Club, and Citizens Freedom Alliance, Inc. Her many interviews in the media ranged from foreign magazines to college newspapers. They were in print, on the radio, and on television. She was instrumental in many local and national Club projects, and she served on the Action Committee for The Smokers Rights Newsletter.
Garnet was a Midwestern beacon of light for our movement and will be sorely missed. The best thing we can do in her memory is to continue the fight that she was so dedicated to and work to bring Illinois and the rest of the states and countries suffering under the Antis' yoke back to some semblance of freedom.
- Michael J. McFadden

We are stunned and saddened. Garnet was so instrumental in helping our hawaii movement get off the ground in such a powerful manner.
Our trademark daily "drop-offs" were fueled by all the daily info that we garnered off of her Illinois smoker rights site and the many members who daily provided various links, stats, and info to everyone.
That crucial information was our main source of TRUTH AMMUNITION during those first critical 2 months of our battle in '07.
Thank you Garnet, for all you have done for the movement,we will miss you and we will carry on and take that baton forward, and we will win for you.
Aloha,

I wanted her to be there when IL softens it's ban....
When the NV legislature overturns it's ban...
When she and I could ride on an airplane and smoke sitting next to each other.
She's not really gone, you know...
because there was a time we could do those things...
and that time still exists in our memories...
and there will be a time again.

The admin of the specified site asked me twice if I can add a link to www.cigreviews.com on here, since he's trying to give his site more exposure on smokers rights sites in particular. But this is the closest thang I can do in terms of adding a link period on this great site.

I am in my 50's no wrinkles, hardly sick have no breathing problems, and my lungs are clear. It depends on the person and cancer is in everyone.Second hand smoke is not the killer, the government is the killer. We have no rights any more, or did we ever?? We need to stand up for these rights. Check out all the states and see for yourself on business closings due to the law, and now more people out of work, pretty soon all the homes will be foreclosed on, Open a non smoking bar next to a smoking and you see what happens, the smoking bar makes all the money and the non smokers cry, so the government says well lets make it so there is no competition. We need to fix this, but how and who????

Great web site you have. illinoissomokersrights.com. One part I found very interesting was an article that stated 22.8 or 28.2 per cent of ill residents are smokers leaving 70+ per cent non smokers.

Sounds as if the smokers are infact OUTNUMBERED so to speak. But numbers being what they are (numbers) I think it would be interesting to look at those numbers without the religious sector included.

I have nothing against religion, in fact in have strong religious beliefs. But I have yet to see a preacher bring his flock into the local watering hole and setup bussiness. And I'm certinly not going to get a bunch of my buddys and run down to the chruch and fire one up.

But take that put of the numbers out and lets see how much we are outnumbered then

YOU ARE DOING GREAT

the smoking ban is wrong in so many ways,.it has nothing to do with smoking or not smoking! it is wrong because it is the government telling private citizens what they can and can't do in their own property, if it is a public place that is tax funded (ie a library) than fine! i agree that governement has jurisdiction, but to tell me what i can and can't do in my business is just another example of how special interest groups work to forward their own interests by stripping citizens of their rights. when will it end? Case in point , restaurants and Bars are private property, owned by private citizens or corporate entities. NOT by the governement. what is next? martial law?

My lungs are clear. I've been smoking 20 plus years. Guess what? I got radon poisoning and carbon monoxide poisoning from my own home. Gee, after all these years I find out radon comes from the soil, most homes have it, and it causes lung cancer. How many people do you think have unjustly had their death certificates labeled lung cancer due to smoking when it might actually be due to radon exposure? I suppose this would be a bad thing to do more research on since the government might have to admit it may be our own homes killing us and not smokers. Mass panic?

I'm glad you're here. As a person of well-above-average intelligence, I do not automatically accept new information, regardless of how convincing it may seem. On the matter of these ridiculous intrusions into personal freedom which we call smoking bans, I have to say a few things.
1. What frightens me most is that so many people in the world (not just the U.S.A.) are so lacking in common sense intelligence, they just accept these statistics offered as "proof" and say, "oh, well, I guess I can't argue."

2. As an employee of a bar in the city of Chicago, I place more creedence on the opinions of the patrons of that bar than on media reports of what the "general public wants." What these customers are telling me (and I have definitely been initiating conversations with them on the issue of smoking bans) is that they do not support them.

3. Anyone who is able to make their own decisions about what activities and lifestyles they cultivate within the law, whenever presented with information challenging the propriety of those activities and lifestyles, will place the burden of proof upon the challenger. I have seen that smoking has been challenged, smoking bans have spread like a cancer, and yet, I'm still waiting for the proof.

4. I'm 37 years old, which means that, barring the unforseen, I can reasonably expect to live another 40+ years. I have begun to see how one by one, personal freedoms are becoming casualities. We (especially in the U.S.A.) are asked to accept these sacrifices in the interests of national security, public safety, and health, etc. When I face those 40+ years, I'm filled with dread at the coming succession of sacrifices I'll be forced to make. What horrible losses of freedom of choice are lined up behind the currently fashionable ones?

Hi,

I am conducting clinical research in Chicago with investigational treatments for current or ex-smokers suffering from emphysema or chronic bronchitis (COPD). I am really interested in any suggestions anyone might have in helping to inform and locate current or ex-smokers who might be interested in participating. The research is not pro or anti-smoking. We are evaluating medications to help improve the daily lives of people who have developed lung problems from smoking. Again, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey Garnet,

Your site overall is amazing! I'm surprised it took me this long to discover the site's guestbook.

You certainly do a good job as an activist in the smoking battle. This site is great for resources on several tobacco/smoking issues. Almost like an Midwest FORCES site so to speak...that's how good the site is in my eyes.

Well, no need for me to say more, at least I can't think of things I never said before about yourself and your site. I don't wanna sound like a broken record in here. But thought I'd drop you a line in your guestbook after viewing it.

But instead of saying keep up the good work in fighting, I'll say you certainly make a good director for the Midwest region of the Smokers Club Inc. They made the right choice in that sense.

Just found your site this afternoon. You have done a wonderful job here. I commend you on your efforts.

The anti-smoking establishment is out of control. The real poison is not cigarette smoke. It is the falsified propaganda put out by said establishment in an effort to dehumanize and criminalize people that have made a personal choice. The politicians then seize on that panic to make a fast buck. It is shameful.

My best to you on your site. You provide a lot of good information. It is my hope that it opens more than a few eyes.

//Larry

Poor Larry,

You have answered your own question as to the purpose of this website. You appear to have spent considerable time and effort exploring Illinois Smokers Rights and composing an antismoking message. As a smoker and believing in others' rights to express themselves, I will leave your lengthy post in tact. You have defeated your own purpose by regurgitating overused "sheeple" dogma, without taking the initiative to supply any creative ideas of your own.

Garnet Dawn - Webmaster 04-24-06

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Interesting site. However, why would intelligent people waste their time in creating and maintaining such a site? Is the one word answer to that 'addict'?

Smokers' Rights, by definition, is an oxymoron. Let me qualify that. To the best of my knowledge, and I will admit my knowledge is limited to only a small part of the world, smokers have no claim to any rights which all other people in their same jurisdiction also have. I believe under various constitutions, etc., such would be illegal.

Therefore any rights which smokers may or may not have are also the rights of all other citizens, subject to laws regarding minors, etc. Thus smokers have the same and identical rights that all people of the same age categories have. Therefore we have a fair and equal system.

Back to my oxymoron remark then. Smokers' Rights is an oxymoron because there are no rights granted to smokers that are not also available to everyone else. Conversely, smokers do not and cannot have rights that exclude non-smokers, or simply there is not or cannot be any specific right called smokers' rights.

Many jurisdictions in the world have now decided and legislated that all people have the right to enter any place where people gather without the necessity or fear of breathing tobacco smoke. Most jurisdictions in the world who have not yet reached that point are at various levels of pursuing that legislation, with a very few exceptions. To date several countries in the world have enacted country-wide legislation which prohibits smoking in any publicly accessible place. It appears that this will eventually spread through most countries in the world or at least in those countries that we might consider the free world. There are also some 3rd world countries that have or are enacting smoking legislation.

Because health and science people all over the world have discovered that indoor smoking is dangerous to the health of everyone indoors where there is tobacco smoke, it is therefore world widely accepted that smoking indoors is not acceptable nor a right of anyone, smoker or non-smoker. Hence smokers have no rights regarding smoking indoors because there are no rights to smoke indoors. Technology, knowledge, science are changing everyday, and at a much more rapid pace than it has ever done before in the history of man, at least as far as we are aware of man's history.

I think no one here will dispute that smokers have all the same rights not related to smoking that all other people have, so that there is no discrimination. I will qualify that also, because I know of situations where the rights of smokers do differ. An example is life insurance. For many decades, most, if not all life insurance companies have charged a higher rate for premiums on life insurance if the purchaser is a smoker. This also applies to certain other forms of activities in which the insurance industry considers that their risk is higher than that of the general public. Same also applies with automobile insurance when less experienced young drivers and/or drivers with a history of claims against their insurance are charged a higher rate to be insured than the general public. While smokers might argue against the higher premiums they must pay, I don't think they can argue against the rationale of the insurance industry to place higher rates on known higher risk situations. One can argue that many smokers outlive many non-smokers, and this is true, but overall, smokers as a groups have a much lower life expectancy than non-smokers, and smoking is still rated as one of the highest, if not the highest of all preventable causes of death in the world.

Therefore, in my opinion, your site serves no useful purpose whatsoever.

in the fight for freedom, you can be assured we are a
silent (majority?) standing solidly behind you. Thanks,
again!

My theory ... Live and Let Live! If all the "Do Gooders" would just leave everyone else alone and keep their noses on their faces where they belong instead of sticking them where they don't, the world would be a much better place!
I am very proud of what Garnet (Big Sis) did with this site and her ongoing fight against the establishment! She's worked diligently for smoker's rights and equal rights in general!!

P.S. By the way, P.M. (Party Mouse), made us sign a contract that we would not divulge anything of his personal history (shhhhhh ... drinking problem) in order to use his picture. What a sweet guy though!!

I am firmly convinced the most serious threat to freedom in America today is not from foreigners such as the Al Queada, North Korea, China, Or Iran. Our military takes care of that threat and then some. The most serious threat is unquestionably from tyrants within, like the Anti Tobacco Establishment.
Garnet, your relentless fight against these wackos is much appreciated! We have Honor, Freedom, and Truth on our side, and in the end, we will triumph!

Jim

Prohibition of a legal product strikes a blow at the Heart of Democracy.

The objection to 'Crusaders' is not that they try to make us think as they do, but they try to make us do as they think!
