| Comments: | This site is impressive in its wide variety of family history materials available for St Joseph Island families and descendants. I have found several of my ancestors amongst the different areas. Thank you Garry and the other members of the group for the hard work you have done.
I am interested in the family members of William Van Steinburg and Mary McAlpine. Several of their children came to SJI as young adults and stayed. William and Mary seem to have been on the island for a period, and Mary died there in 1906/7. William had returned to south eastern Ontario and died at Morewood in 1905. It is stated in the Steinburg stories here that William was born in Germany. I have been looking for his place of birth and I would like confirmation of this fact. Does anyone know whether there is documentary proof of his birth in Germany? I am happy to share my part of the Steinburg family history (William was my great grandfather, his son Urias was my grandfather, and my father was Kenneth Robert Steinburgh. He and his brothers and sisters aren't listed on the large Steinburgh family tree). Best wishes to all, Jane |

This web site is marvelous. Visited the island in 1984 and found Lorne Brownlee(89) whose father was Wm. B. and his mother was 'Kitty'Rains. I have heard since that he lived to be 102. I especially enjoyed the museum there and the questionaire that was passed around in 1932 or '36. |

I remember a little of St Joes Island as a small child my parents would take us there to pick crabb apples-at the time I did not know that is where my father's family came from=my father died when I was 10 yrs old and we have had no contact with this family and I would really like to see what and they look like and who they were. | Comments: | I have been researching Adeline Quesnel. I found out alot about her. There was story that was told and then written on this site about Bampford's Creek. Hector Nelson refers to his "Grandmother White, (La Blanc)", I found that she was sister to my Great Grandmother Adeline Quesnel. Mr. Crowder says in the clipping that a Mr. Bampford cleared land for a farm, but instead took an offer of a job on a boat. My grandfather came to the US by way of boat, I wonder if this was my grandfather that he was referring to. It would be interesting to know if any of Mr. Nelson's family is still around.

I could not find my grandfather, John Edward Brownlee in the 1871 census, although he is shown in land holdings. I believe he was a son of James & Ann Jane, born 1869. In 1905, he joined brother Donald in Graminia, AB, where they married Sutherland sisters, Margaret & Elizabeth. John died in 1945, age 76, and is buried in the Pioneer Cemetery, Spruce Grove, AB.
