I am an Aussie who has greatly admired your art work for many years now. I am 5o years of age notice I didn't say old! I remember my early school years rushing to the shop to pick up the latest issues of marvels best!

Thanks for the inspiration and years of fine art Gene. I ended up an artist myself and still have a large collection of marvel comics FORM THE 1960'S. Must have been the inspiration you at marvel set back then for us :)

I have worked here in Australia for Disney studios as an animator. I Love to draw and favour drawing the human form. I continue to learn each day and enjoy the company of other artists who meet at our local art gallery to draw sharing our experiences.

All the very best to you and your family Gene!
Thank you

Comments: Hi Gene,

I've been a fan of your work since I first read Marvel comics in the early 70s.

In England back then we rarely got imported US comicbooks, instead UK publishers reprinted black and white stories from the mid-sixties and I'm glad that's how I saw your artwork - as black and white sure looks closest to your original pencils, and looking at your artwork thrills me today as much as it did to me thirty five years ago.

Today I've just listened to the Comic Geek Speak interview for I think probably the fifth time since it was aired, a joy once again Sir to hear you talk about your experiences in the comicbook industry.

I've read the 'Secrets of the shadows' book recently and I was delighted so much seeing your pencils getting the credit they deserve.

The 'enjoy' t-shirts look great, but man, the logo should be emblazened right across the front of the shirt! I've a feeling the humble guy you seem to be is reason the logo is small and pocket-sized! Next time there's a new run on them listen to the fans and let's have 'Enjoy Gene Colan' proudly across our chests in huge letters!

Kind regards to you and Adrienne

Simon Knight (UK)

I have been a long time fan of yours and always had hoped that you, Marv and Tom would do a last Dracula story at some point. I can dream! Well ,you were most gracious at the mega con and I appreciated it! Tomb was my favorite that you worked on but I always liked your Cap, Daredevil, and Batman also. Best to you and your wife

You'll see Mr. Colan's work come to life, and believe me it is a treat. I think Gene's rendition is better than Kirby's, Buscema's and Everett's, and stands out even more so today!

Comments: Dear Gene,

I just wanted to thank you for so many years of outstanding work and unabated commitment to your art. I've loved comics since I was very young, and you have always been one of my favorite artists. You draw like nobody else; the sense of realism is incredible. I have to admit that I was a bit scared of your Tomb of Dracula comics when I was younger - that's how good they are - but now I can appreciate the macabre atmosphere and detail more fully. You have made so many thousands of people happy with your work over the years, and continue to do so. Best wishes to you and Adrienne, take care and thanks again!

Sincerely,

Comments: I just picked up the Iron Man Marvel Masterworks volume 77, which features all Gene Colan work! I HIGHLY recommend it for a great run on Iron Man, far superior to anything that is about to follow.

Also, I picked up the Dr. Strange Masterwork and immediately was transported back to those days of yesteryear, where Tom Palmer and Gene were first paired on the good doctor.

If only the Sub-Mariner volume had measured up as well. Now, I'm looking forward to the next Captain America Masterwork, as it should pick up with Gene's start on the good Captain's run.

And if I ever find a copy of the Captain Marvel Masterwork #50 in Variant cover, I'm going to enjoy his seminal work on the out-space hero as well... at least for the first six installments... the best by far!

Thank you Gene! (PS: I've got the order in for the DareDevil volume already... it should be in later this week!)

Thanks for giving us a hero we could count on to use his brain, as well as his repulsor rays.

(And of course, Beverly Switzler wasn't so bad, either.)

Well, you already know I admire your work so much. Sorry for the confusion.

Comments: I grew up admiring Gene's work, back in Lima, Peru. I even used to buy the comic books not anymore for the story but to collect his incredible style. I hope I don't sound too disrespectful for calling him just Gene, but for me, he is like an uncle I always admired since I was a kid. Every new comic book of his was like receiving news from "that uncle".
When I moved to the US I started to look more for the comic books he worked on. I was really shocked when last year I learned that he passed away. I guess, I was too involved with my work. It was as if a close relative of mine had departed. However, now that I am a Graphic Designer-Illustrator, I tend to -every once in a while- browse through my collection (that I use as a reference and for inspiration) and come to think that Gene is still among us. His work still tell stories without the need for words, and the stories that he still tells us, even through his Dracula Lives series, are always of good wining over evil. It is just fascinating to find that concept through his compositions and specially through his pencils.
Thanks, "uncle" Gene. You are still the best!

Comments: Back in the 1970's, when I was devouring Marvel Comics, I never wrote any fan letters. Lately, I've been rereading a lot of my collection, and believe it's not too late to send a note of appreciation to an artist that I admired very much "back in the day". (Wish I had thought of this a few years ago, when John Buscema was still with us). Your work on Howard the Duck, Dracula, and of course Daredevil was stunning, and I have a Black Widow story from Amazing Adventures that is simply beautiful. Of course, the Avengers was excellent, as was your Captain America, Conan, etc. etc. etc.

Anyways, thanks for all the years of entertainment. If Marvel had a Mt. Rushmore for artists, Kirby, J. Buscema and yourself would be my first three picks.

Comments: I really wanted to get a chance to thank Gene. When I was about 11 or 12 I would email him and ask him for advice on artwork and comics. I would expect me to have been at least a little bit annoying, and while most guys would have given a quick answer and brushed it off, Gene would provide several genuine pieces of advice. Being that young and just having a chance to have a little conversation with someone I really admired meant alot. I'm in high school now, and I wanted to get a chance to show my gratitude.

Thanks Gene.

Comments: Mr. Colan, I just wanted to say I have loved your work since the 70s, when the Tomb of Dracula was one of the comics I most anticipated every month. You brought so much mood and drama to the series that waiting for a new issue every month was torture! But those long waits simply made the days when the comic arrived that much sweeter. When all the comics were re-released in the three "Essential Tomb of Dracula" volumes, I found that the series had lost none of its luster after all these years. You are truly one of the greats.

I would love to commission a Dracula vs. Dr. Strange piece from you if you had the time in a couple of months. My budget won't allow for it before July or so, but a piece of your art in my home would be a treasure to me forever. I really enjoy visiting you Web site, also. Your art has brought me pleasure for decades.

My son and I will be coming over from England to the NY Comic Con in Feb 07 and we are really looking forward to meeting you. The trip was my Christmas present from my wife and was inspired when she saw (during a search to buy me "yet another peice of Colan artwork") that you were attending. It will great to thank you in person for your art, as it was my love of Tomb of Dracula that got me back into comics at the age of 35. Comments: I just want to say thank you to Gene. I was around 11 years old in 1964 when I began to read Marvel Comics, and I literally remember about 70% of the artwork. Gene was special among comic artists to me, his shadowing and fluid lines so unique to comic book pages. My wife bought me "Marvel" By Mr. Daniels for this Christmas (2006), and I have never held a book in my hands that brought me such joy. I was a fat little boy who dreamed of being a superhero because I felt so powerless in this sometimes cruel world. As I get older I find myself wanting to say thanks to those who have entertained and enthralled me, before it is too late. Thanks Gene.

Comments: Just take the Iron Man story in Tales Of Suspense issue number 91 for example entitled "The Uncanny Challenge Of The Crusher." There's more going on, more action in those twelve pages than the 5 or 6 books it takes for many of the comic creators of today to write or draw. That's the sign of strong storytelling at it's best, and that is to be admired. These days, it's hard to stay interested in many of the titles' story arcs, because they just don't have the same intensity that your books always had. And that is why your work is so much more memorable. Your's truly, B.

Your characters always had so much more personality, a sort of spark-of-life in their expressions. Gene Colan drawings always looked like they could pop out of the page at you, the people looked real!

And there was so much whimsy (not just in the faces, but the layouts, too) Gene Colan books were FUN to read, and they inspired some great laugh-out-loud dialog from Stan Lee.

Thanks for all the unforgettable entertainment and inspiration. God bless you, Gene. You're the greatest.

I've known and loved your work from the mid-60s onwards - for me, your versions of Dr Strange, Iron Man, Daredevil and the Sub-Mariner are the definitive ones, so I was delighted a few years ago to splash out on two adjoining pages of Iron Man vs the Titanium Man from Tales of Suspense.

Your work has been part of my life for over 40 years, and what amazes me to this day is the movement in your artwork - nobody captures motion the way you do. Just as I think of Kirby in terms of blocks, I think of you in terms of curves.

Your work has always been unmistakable to me - long may it, and you, continue.

With best wishes,

Artists like Big John Buscema RIP, Joe Sinnott, John Romita, Al Buscema and definitely you made a great job by turning my childhood into heaven. I didn't know your names then but I definitely appreciated your efforts. Those new comic books unfortunately appear no more than computer-generated highly-coloured crap to me which are no comparison to old masters' work ( perhaps I am getting old living through the " good old days " syndrome ). I'm writing from the UK with a query and a heads up. It might interest you all to know that I've recently been seeing a lot of Gene's stuff reappearing over here.
I've noticed Marvel UK ( such as it is ) using the classic Lee/Colan Daredevil in both their hardback annuals and a weekly Spidey book. The weird thing is, everything else in these books seems to be new stuff.
I wonder if Gene gets any kind of reprint money for these, or if he even knows about it.
A belated thanks, by the way, to the man himself for the great shots of DD & The Widow I recieved before Xmas, and hopefully retirement doesn't mean the end of one of the best artist's sites on the web ( along with Joe Sinnott's! )
All the best

Comments: I know everyone raves about the all the Marvel characters you've had a hand in over the years,( and deservedly so!)but I've gone on a hunt of the Gene Colan Batman ( my favorite comic hero of all time!) and so doing, have aquired a copy of Detective Comics issue #543, and was imeadiately impressed with how you just seemed to capture the very essense of the Batman, in the spirit in which he was originally intended, in those first several dark and moody stories, that launched him into fame. The haunting imagery, the menace, it's all there! I think Bob Kane himself would have been very proud of these covers and the great interior art you contributed for his Dark Knight.

You probably hear this all the time but you have no idea how much impact your art has had on me. Starting in around 1974 as a 12 year old schoolboy picking up the Marvel UK weekly b\w repints of your colour Tomb of Dracula work. I was hooked then and (at 43) I'm still hooked now. Then seeing your pure pencil work on Ragamuffins and that colour DC PI series (the name of which alludes me) but there were too series. Loved them all. Not to mention those framing, Slow Glass bits in Unknown Worlds Of Science Ficition.

Thanks for making my childhood so rich and my adulthood too.

I always loved your Artwork on every Hero or Antihero like Dracula. From Daredevil trough Submariner i just loved your "interpetation" of Matt Murdock. With Magazins like "Alter Ego" or "Comic Book Artist" i was totally blown away by your pnecils. I wish we could see more of your Work in Comicpages today, but sans inking.
It was sad, to read what Marvel had done to you, and thankfully whit the help of Adrienne, you survived. And at last your Artwork is better than ever.
Mayby next Year i buye e little Drawing (Matt of curse).

Seek it out, even on ebay, it's that good!

Second, The Daredevil work from about issue #20 through 40!

Third, the Iron Man from Tales of Suspense circa #70 through Iron Man #1 or so. Can't be beat!

Thank you Gene for so many great childhood memories!

It's seems they started doing their best work at the point you started turning in so many memorable pages, and maybe you brought it to the next level. Have a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.

Gene's Art Work was distinctive. It was like a move coming to life. I loved his work on IRON MAN, Tony Stark was never more real then when Gene worked on that series. Marvel made a lonely boy, who couldn't engage in relationships very happy - there was 'humanity' in Marvel comic 'Super Heroes' who had an inate Goodness in them, and Gene Colan was one of the many people who brought characters to life in an almost in 3D effect.

I started reading comic books voraciously in 1983, before that I read them when I got them from my mother, which was regular enough, but in high school with lunch money (most of it went into comics) i could buy whatever I wanted.

I've always been and still am a DC nut, on average I will purchase 35 books (comics and magazines) and out of all of that I get 3 Marvel titles regularly (DD, Black Panther and Captain America) so I only knew Gene Colan from ....

BATMAN

He was doing Batman and then switched over to Detective Comics swapping with Don Newton, so I was getting Newton who I adored and Gene Colan who I didnt outright love at first, but had a serious fascination with. I later realised that he had a long career at Marvel in the late 60s early 70s, but I never really went out of my way to get his earlier work.

I though the two series that he did with Don McGregor was great (Nathinel Dusk I and II)

and yes, I will be picking up The Tomb of Dracula Essentials pretty soon, I want to savour Gene's work without colour.

and before I sign off, let me just say "Happy 79th Birthday Gene", hope you are around to see many more.

Thanks for using your exceptional talent to give me years of pleasure.

Comments: To Gene Colan:
I thought of being a cinematographer or comic book artist in college, but decided to become and actor instead. Which is crazier, who knows. Anyway... After 20 years of not even looking at my old comic books, I recently got them all out (1,278 Silver Age Marvels) and have begun to catalogue them in earnest. And I noticed something... I began buying comics in 1967 when I was 8 yrs old. Iron Man and Sub-Mariner (Suspense and Astonish) were the ones that first hooked me, then Capt Marvel and Daredevil. What I've noticed is that all the characters I was first attracted to - were illustrated by you! Without even realizing it, my youthful eyes had found extraordinary appeal in your work, and I became a Gene Colan collector. Today, at 45 (a successful actor), I am still awed by the unrivaled elegance, power, and emotional impact of your art. I travel all over the country with my career and would enjoy nothing more than to meet you in person someday.
Thank you for your gift, and for continuing to share it with such endless creativity.

I began with Captain America TB Vol. 2, then came the Daredevil TB Vol. 2, shortly thereafter I read all 3 Tomb of Dracula, and am currently enjoying the Iron Man TB Vol. 2. (Not to mention a few Dr. Strange issues I own as well.)I regret I haven't seen much of the Batman comics that was given the Colan touch, (I love the Dark Night also)because these pencils are so compelling and are every bit as fresh as when they were first published. Most newer artists today simply cannot match Mr. Eisner or Gene Colan in the way they could tell a story, and bring it to life with such stark imagery. Every panel stands out, and makes for a dynamic visual experience. This is such fascinating artwork, that one never tires to look at it, ever. Thanks.

Comments: Wow! What can one say about an artist like Gene that hasn't been said before. I grew up in the 60's reading Gene's art with Daredevil and of course followed his work through Dracula and more. I have to disagree with Gene on one point he made on his website in the fan art contest. When Gene pencils something, it is always recognizable as Gene Colan art! Many people can copy artists like Gene or Jack Kirby or even John Buscema, et al. But Gene's work has a uniqueness to my eye that no cheap imitator can duplicate. His pencils breath life into the parchment that resonate forward no matter who inks or colors his work. I will admitt Tom Palmer is the best inker to finish Gene's work other than Gene himself. Like so many other things in my life I would not care to know what my world would have been like growing up without Gene's imagination jumping from his mind through his hand to my eyes and into my imagination. Thanks Gene for all the great adventures!

Comments: My family moved from California to Puerto Rico in 1969, when I was five years old, and comics and baseball cards were among my connections to the mainland and home. I was fascinated with Daredevil and Captain America in the very early 70's, as I cut and pasted the magnificently depicted figures to the walls of my room. My mother interpreted this as abuse and comic buying went on hold for a few years. Then, in 1975, I picked up DD #124 at the age of eleven, having been lured back in by Mr. Colan's exciting cover. I enjoyed the issue en route to my new home in Venezuela and gave it much better treatment. Looking back, I realized that it was Gene's art which prompted me to display Cap and DD in my room, and it was Gene's art which brought me back into the world of comics again, providing some of the most peaceful solitude that I can recall (reading Marvel of course), in an already great childhood.

Needless to say, I appreciate Gene's art and impact on me immensely. DD #124 hangs in my office, as does Captain America #122, serving as reinforcement in so many different ways, as I pave my way through corporate America, and they reminding me of those unparalleled feelings and great emotions I experienced in the 1970's.

Highest regards,
John Lucio

Comments: This site is a tremendous tribute to Mr.Colan's work. We only had time to see a small part of it today. I had a chance to meet him at a convention in about 1977 when I was just starting. We're delighted to see so much recent work. Thank you very much.

Comments: Hello! Thank you for this opportunity to say "THANK YOU" for the years of enjoyment your skill and talent have given me. Ol' Hornhead vs. the Jester: he may have been a weak villian but I thought he was great, in a pathetic, psychotic way.Doc Strange: You did the "blue mask" Issues. AWESOME. 'nuff said. Dracula: what can I say that hasn't been commented on already? How about, you made him hungry. the way he should be. Howard? Loved Brunner and how could you possibly match that? You made him your own and it was spectacular "BONG". Finally, maybe my favorite, Silverblade. I STILL take out my set and read it every couple of months. It was/is cinematic storytelling at it's graphic best. I've emailed 3 artists to tell them thank you: Chuck Jones, Neal Adams and Gene Colan. These words may sound a bit weak, but they are heartfelt: THANK YOU for enriching my life. Best, Chuck

Comments: Hi Gene,
I wanted to thank you for many glorious hours of entertainment. When I think of Daredevil or Dracula the name Colan is associated with both. You are one of the finest illustrators I've had the pleasure of meeting and your name is in my opinion is linked with comic's greatest (Williamson, Ditko, Schultz, Frazetta, Wrightson, Stevens, Kirby...etc).
Thanks for everything.

Comments: Hello, Gene,

I have always admired your artwork, since I was a child and I read Tomb of Dracula. Not only did you capture the ferocity and intensity of the character, your artwork was cinematic and expressionist, and it always seemed more like I was watching a silent film rather than reading a comic book.

Your artwork transcends the medium, and reveals the potential for greatness that was always there in comic book art.

Best wishes, Tim Aymar

Comments: Hello Gene,Adrienne and family
Thank you for inspirations and the escapes
Thanks for the realistic sketches of humanity
There is a joy and an honesty in your work
I've been a fan since the early 70's
For a young boy growing up in smalltown Canada, comics were an entry into larger realities. They opened up the world to me. Your work left a lasting impression on me.
Tomb of Dracula,Howard the Duck and Daredevil remain part of my oft' cluttered psyche. A cherished part.
I found your website while I was living and teaching in Indonesia. Now I'm in Northern China with my family. I manage a small English school here. I still like to read comics when possible.
We also use superheroes(Marvel,DC and ones we create ourselves) in the class. superheroes are great for lessons on Can and Can't,Conditionals and Modals.
Thank you
Hope you and your family are well
All the best,Wayne Duplessis
