Lots of wind and sun. Kicking the tube against the wind was a good workout, but it was still fun. Scott |

Fished Newport Harbor in the PM (the spot used for Father's day floats.) A lot of mullet jumping and plenty of bait in the water. The fishing was surprisingly slow. Only a couple of sand bass. I was lazily floating along dragging a clouser and a size 6 baitfish imitation. It was like the one I showed you last week, only much smaller. started stripping line in slowly when, POW. Line goes ripping out off the stripping apron. I let a large knot go up to the guides and held on to the line to keep the rod together. the hook broke at the bend and the fly looked nothing like when I cast it out. Moral of the story is to stretch your line prior to use. One moment of laziness cost me a good shot at.... I'll never know. Still had a lot of fun. Scott |

Hit Mission bay today and did well. Overcast sky, mild wind and not too many boaters in the water. Caught several spotties, sandies, herring and one potato chip halibut. Fly color and pattern didn't matter today. Slyfly, clouser, orange, olive, white, chartreuse...it just didn't matter. The bass hit them all. All the bigger bass were caught on larger patterns. No big bass on smaller flies. Caught fish on an outgoing tide, incoming tide and slack tide. If you can make the trip, the bay is fishing well right now. Scott |

Fished the Mammoth area on two trips Easter April 5 thru 8th and two weeks before. Fantastic fishing basically by ourselves on the East Walker which was running at 100 c.f.s. on Easter morning. Caught 25 fish + (plus) each both days, including a Brown at 22" and just thick and heavy likely close to 7 pounds plus others at/close to 20". Fished 6x tippet with small midge larva (cream UFO/Yong Special style 24, 26)and UV midge emergers in olive and black beauty in morning when fish were really slashing and chasing midge pupae. Later morning switched to specific baetis slender body baetis nymphs 22, 24, some w/ flash. Also, a fish or two on a Barr's caddis net spinner larva. When bite slowed with sun straight up we fished junk flies(bead head San Juan worms, scuds) and did real well. Just loved His and Her's bead head san juan worm in red...just a killer fly for Browns!!! Caught the monster brown on it. Seined river and found lots of small dark baetis nymphs which were hatching, also fairly large Hydropysche and Rhyacophilia caddis larvae (greenish olive color), cased caddis, and by the dam very small midge larvae & pupae in light olive and cream/goldish color. Lots of olive and gray scuds too. In evening got some nice hookups in toilet boil whirling large black wooly buggers on a sink tip. Picture of Brown Trout and others will be uploaded. Also, lower Owens was fantastic right below Pleasant Valley Reservoir to foot bridge on slender body small baetis nymphs 22's, small copper johns, and small midge dries in flat water. Also, had great dry action down at the two lower Owens river bridges on caddis dries/cripples as the caddis egg layers were going crazy in afternoon...as were the trout. Caddis were a size 14, 16 in a smoke color. Fish E/C caddis, Elk Hair, Hemingway Caddis and skate, twitch on surface. Mark |

Frank, I fished the sandbar for about 1 1/2 hours for no fish. The bait anglers were not catching anything either. Lots of baitfish in the water as well as the jetty crabs walking in the shallows. I skipped Bolsa Chica and fished Dana Harbor from the jetty from about 6:00 pm to about 7:30. Most of the people fishing were fishing the Doheney side. The trawler was dropping bait off to the bait barge. I thought it was a good sign. My first two casts were snagged on vegetation. My next three were queenfish on a rootbeer clouser tied skinny. I changed flies several times and proceeded to catch queenfish on all the flies I tied on. They were all trailing a 4/0 pearl slyfly (hoping a big halibut was there.) I also caught one croaker type fish I'm not familiar with that was about 12". |

| text: | I'm a 4 yr, novice in the sport flyfishing. Last spring i caught my largest calico yet, at 5 lbs. on a 8 wt. Now heres where, it seems to come togather. My observation from hoop netting and scuba diving. Grace and I have put our efforts in coming up with a fly to imitate baby lobster. And the calico rock fly was born. This pattren started working on the third cast, and continued to catch fish as well as plastics. Especially before dark, want details ask Grace. |

Fished Dana Harbor late afternoon until about an hour after dark on an incoming tide. I launched from the baby beach and headed to the flats. A real low tide and nothing there. I hit a few boat slips for real slow fishing. I started getting the bites more often dredging the bottom of the channel. The Bass were hit and miss, but, when I found one I could usually catch a couple more. Caught most on a pearl slyfly. Frank, I did get a couple of tugs on the ponytail, but, I had a trailer so I don't know what they were really hitting. I had the fish overgunned with my birthday rod, but, it was fun especially when the wind was blowing. That thing is a cannon. I may be tubing with it for a while because it is fun to cast. Todd, thanks for setting my rig up in the shop. Scott |

3 other people out fishing besides myself. Many sea lions out ruining the fishing. I had a few strikes and one huge pull that sawed off my fly. Tried all the colors and combinations with no luck. I think I will try again next weekend, hopefuly no sea lions |

Reeled it in and took the hook out of it's beak. Great day, hardly no wind. Fisherman Von picked up two or three Croaker. |

| text: | Had been in the Mammoth area for a week. Decided to take a drive up to take a look at Lake Ellery (fist lake on the tioga pass turn off of 395) when we got there the lake had been drained (we heard to try and eliminate a non native fish that had taken hold) the inlet stream that feeds the lake was now running on the bottom of what used to be the lake. We took our rods down and gave it a try. All the fish in the lake must have been "super concentrated" in the stream because the fishing was wide open all day for everyone and there was no fly that would not work. One of those 50+ fish days that rarely come around. |

Fished the upper Owens on the 20th of Oct. and the flows were good. Small cadis were abundant, fishing was great, it was a very productive day. Fished both the Walker and the Carson the next two days, we had great luck both days. The fish ranged from 10" to 14" taking both nimphs and drys. |

Thanks for setting up the float trip at Newport Harbor. It is great having a Fly Shop take the time to fish with the customers. A little fun and a little learning. I head to the Sierras next week and can't wait to use your flies, and as usual I'm sure you will be 100 percent correct. Scott |

I had a great time at the Father's Day float on Newport Harbor. Several people hooked into big bat rays with at least two landed. I was one of the lucky ones to bring in a 20 - 25lb bat ray. Used the pearl slyfly and held on for the ride. My first time in a float tube and my hardest pull on a fly rod. As always Frank you give me nice pearls of wisdom every time I see you. I learned alot today. Thanks, Scott |

| text: | Last Tuesday my son showed me a picture of a 20 plus inch trout, just caught around Mammoth Lakes. I said, "I want to catch one of those." I then said, "let's go see Frank and see if he can put us on fish that size." Frank sent us to 3 different locations at Mammoth with several different setups. The first day we started catching 14 inch plus fish, (I mean all day long, at the end of the day you are so tired you can hardly standup, but you will never stop fishing). The second day, the SAME THING,however we only fished 18 inch plus fish because is rig set up was so...(I am at a loss for words), INCREDIBLE. We ended up with me catching a 21 inch rainbow trout and my son catching a 20 inch rainbow trout. GO SEE FRANK! |

Just arrived back from Tahiti on the island of Moorea. I stopped in at His & Hers before I left and Frank hooked me up with a little selection. I had already tied up several patterns myself and just needed Franks expert help. Frank, the Blue Slider was the fly of choice. I also used my White Charlie and Bonefish slider that I tied. I caught a variety of reef fishes. I did not see or catch any bones. The fish of choice are the Jacks. I caught several Yellow and Blue Jacks. Sizes from 1lb-5lbs. I later learned to fish at night for these fish. During the night these guys come into the flats and crash baitfish. Then it's game-on. I could not see a thing, just aim for the sound. Strip as fast as you can. I think a white popper about two inches would kill-it there. Side note: If you don't bring it then you don't have it. There are no fly shops and very few fishing supply shops. The whole place is only 39 miles round. I went all around it twice and only found one. It was closed. The set-up I used was my bonefish rig. Had a blast with Frank Selby on the 2/7. What a very nice guy to come fishing with me, show this surf rookie the spots the set up and techniques. Got me into perch and what an education. Still have the smile on my face. Did not expect to fish with an ICON of the sport I have loved for over 30 years. Could never repay the experience. If you are checking this out for the first time give Frank and his very nice staff a call. As a guide I can highly recomend the nice folks at HIS HERS FLYFISHING SHOP for all your ff needs. Hope to have you in CO one day Frank, we'll go stick big bows, browns and cuts. Many thanks!!!!! |
