I`m fascinated by the hardships and struggle our relatives had to go through just to survive. There is a site called "Funnell`s Wood" which has good links to family trees and interesting tit-bits.
Good Luck with the search, Jim.

p.s. I have been trying to get people to say Funn-ell for forty five years.

It was interesting to find so many Funnell's. I think most of the family Emigrated from England. Portsmouth I believe. The family Plot dates back to the early 1800's , with the owner buying the family plot for 6 pounds. We are in the Kingston area now. My grandfather was Charles Hugh Funnell , he was named after the man who purchased the plot Charles Hugh Linter. Who was an American and married Ann Funnell and they had a baby that died. Mr Linter ran a Grocery Store in Kingston. He immigrated fron Watertown Newe York which is 30 miles from Kingston. Super reading all the stories .

Thank You Bill Funnell

I have a data base on most of the Funnells born/married/died in England from 1760. My own family date from Rodmell/Rottingdean in Sussex. Mostly blacksmiths or agricultural workers a couple of shepherds and bad boys thrown, some of the ladies of our 'family' were not behind the door either at pushing themselves forward, long live the emancipated women she always leaves records for us to read. I would love to hear from any Funnells and would be happy to share information. I live in Seaford Sussex so am near enough to go look at the records office for thee too if required.

I am now 7 with a sister living in Australia. I never knew of my father's history but have now traced a birth certificate. Born 3rd April 1917 to an Ada Funnell who was a cook/domestic and resided at 12 South Street, Lewes. No father on the certificate!! I do remember my father saying his mother died when he was young (which may not be true) and he was brought up in an orpange in Lewes before joining the army at 14. Sadly dad died when only 50. Any small tips of help or how I might progress I would find really usefull.

Comments:Just an update on my search for R. S. Funnell - his name is Ronald Spencer Funnell, and I've now tracked down one of the two publications I mentioned in my earlier posting. I've also found another one called Surf-Riding on the Atlantic Coast, self-published in 1953. I think he might have had something to do with Newquay. He appears to be an early (and so far uncelebrated) pioneer of Cornish surfing! Does this ring any bells for any Funnells out there?

Comments:Hi,
I have just stumbled upon your interesting Funnell page. My Grandparents were William Ebenezer and Alice Funnell from England, who emigrated to Canada about 1910, living in various places before finally settling in the Okanagan Valley of BC - Canada's only little strip of semi-desert. Two of their five children were born in Canada.

I am distantly related to Ros Doig who posted earlier messages here and mention me.

My interest is in tracing the background of William Ebenezer. So far I have not found out where he was born, the location or date of the marriage to Alice Tucker, or exactly when they emigrated to Canada. I recently found out he is the son of another William Funnell from Sussex (I note many Funnells came from Sussex), who married Louisa ? (last name not known.) His birth year should be about 1856. In addition to William E., they had two other children, Edith and Albert J.

Anybody else out there have a connection?

Comments:Hi all, my mum's maiden name was Funnell.
I live in Nottingham UK, but my grandfather was a Brighton Funnell.

This is a message mainly for John Victor Funnell.
I spotted your reply mainly cos my girlfriend's a Melbourne girl - but if I'm right your Grandfather Frederick is my great Grandfather's brother.

My Frederick was one of about 10 kids of William Funnell the grocer and pork butcher, who's widow Elizabeth is in the 1851 census as head of the household at 21 Gardner St, Brighton. Frederick here is 24 and down as a Sailor.

The family tree my brother has compiled shows Frederick's occupation as Furniture Shop owner.

Now, in the 1901 Census, Frederick is down as a furniture dealer in Clyde rd, Brighton, married to Amelia with 9 children. Though 1901 is too early to mention Edward Victor, one of Frederick's son's is down as what looks like Iran, or Ivan, but it's difficult to make out. He's down as 2 years old.

I feel sure this is a genuine connection!

If so, you may be interested in knowing the tree my brother has compiled is complete to William Funnell of Chiddingly born around 1660.

As many of you have said, I too was amazed with the number
of Funnell's out there tracing down their family tree.
I have just started and have little to go on. However,
there are more than 100 Funnell households in New Zealand,
some originating from the same Charles Funnell b1830 who
emigrated from England in 1873 to NZ. I think that
Charles married twice; first to Emma (of who I know little
about except that she died in 1867), and secondly to Mary
Bashford in 1869 and they had nine children. Of those
children, Charles Triner Funnell b1870 was my great
grandfather. I am starting to work on this line and am
interested in any information!
My best wishes to all.

Comments:Big hello to all Funnells everywhere. My name is Martin
Harvey. I was born in Buckinghamshire (coincidentally
enough at the Royal Canadian Red Cross Hospital) in Taplow
in 1972. My mother is Carole Harvey (ne้ Funnell) born in
High Wycombe (where I grew up), but before that our Funnell
line is pure Sussex (my grandad, Ernest Charles Funnell
(not the same one mentioned by Andrew Funnell) was born in
Horsham, and his father, Ernest Funnell, was born in
Etchingham. Ernest's father and grandfather were both
called Charles, and the earlier Charles's father and
grandfather were both Edwards. At present we can trace the
Funnell line back to William Funnell, born in Chiddingly in
1668, married Mary Townset/Tomset in 1688. (None of this
was my own work - the research back to 1796 was conducted
by a distant cousin of mine, Wendy Russell (ne้ Funnell)
and that back to 1668 was obtained by Jeff Funnell (as yet
no proven relation)). I got hold of the information over a
very short period in August, and it has given me a
completely different perspective - all my life I'd thought
of my family as just those members I knew, but now I
realise that my family is huge and the members I knew just
a small branch.
If anyone thinks their tree may link into mine or can get
back earlier than 1668, I'd be glad to hear from them.
Maybe we can help each other.
Like the puns, Geoff! There's a lot to be said for the
corny joke.

the Funnells at Chiddingly enter my family during the

Marlow married her second husband George Richard Funnell

the Funnel family in Sussex, irrespective of place of birth
are all related even though it may well be way back. I
would appreciate your comments.
