After 5 weeks in a drug induced coma, 6 more weeks in the hospital and 12 weeks in a wheel chair a finally came to grips with the implications of my addiction and have totally overcome the desire to use drugs to avoid strong emotions. Having used since I was 7 years old the last 6 years has been a difficult learning experience that is quite possibly the best thing to happen in my life. I now feel others could benefit from the understanding and perspective that I have gained on this difficult journey.

I take all of my classes online, and it has been a long and rough road. My major is in the Humanities, and my minor is in Psychology. I do not really feel that I am ready for the work force just yet because I do not know what to expect, but I am really looking forward to it. I am considering the Georgia Peer Specialist Institute to help me find employment or at least point me in the right direction. | Comments: | I am so moved reading the personal accounts of my peers. I have spent so many years in hiding, ashamed of the stigma of a mental disorder/illness. The havoc that has been wrecked in my life due to my pitiful attempts to self medicate has made me want to reach out and help another mother, daughter, sister shake the shacles of despair. I now feel free to advocate and be a voice for all those that don't even know that someone is finally listening.
I believe that in my lifetime it may even be possible for me to stand up for myself, I have to if I am to stand up for anyone else. I worked as a house manager at a well known homeless shelter that as part of the intake process a mental health screening had to be done, not in an attempt to provide help or counseling, but to exclude admittance to the shelter, how ironic that I the shelter staff person was on some of the same medication that deemed another woman unfit to be admitted. Out of fear and ignorance I was lead to believe that for the safety of staff and other residents that this person just could not be trusted to not act out. Like a coward and from years of practice on lying about my own issues, I did not speak out and take a stand, I had the opportunity to make a difference in the life of a peer and for that I am so sorry. I kept quiet out of fear for my job and what people would think if they knew. I look forward to the chance to become a peer specialist, certified to finally make a difference and open my mouth and speak out. |

| Comments: | I and 18 other peers here in Virginia graduated as the first recovery trained Peer Support Specialist class on Feb 9,2007! Chris Martin of META Services of Phoenix AZ did a great job of teaching. Most of us had a job waiting at the end of the training.
Eight of us graduates work here at the Harrisonburg - Rockingham County Community Services Board (HR CSB) in various positions. I work on the newly formed Moible Unit Team that fills the gap between standard case mgmt and the emergency room visit. So when peers start feeling symptoms kicking in, we get a call and help them cope and get stable again. In addition, I work as the local hospital visiting Specialist for peers either in the Psych unit or the medical unit. Still learning both jobs, getting my feet wet but it is exciting and the CSB staff is curious and supportive of all of us. The agency here has given us our own double room as a home base of operations - office furniture, computers, voice mailboxes, official name badges and lots of training. We feel like we are valued members of the overall team! Just got back from a conference where 3 of our colleagues from Charlottesville spoke to the 150 guest crowd about Recovery principles. Got a picture with them outside near the gazebo. So we see our future as bright here in the Old (and Proud) Dominion sharing your southern hospitality with peers no matter where they are from originally. Any words of wisdom for us as we begin this journey and career? Aren't you guys involved in a possible national alliance or registry of Peer Specialists? How is that coming? Mike |

I am a support group facilitator for NAMI Gwinnett and I have alot of interest in dual diagnosis and am currently working to get a dual diagnosis group started through NAMI.
