| Comments: | Hi there, my name is Kathleen Dufresne and I live in Valdosta GA. I got interested in CPS through a counselor at a group I was attending 4x a week. I have already attended the 3 day seminar held in St. Simons last year and turned in my project "Walking Miracle". I was invited back this year as a speaker on my project which I will be attending at St. Simons on August 24, 25 & 26. I have been involved here in Valdosts in running a DTR group. My ambition is to get a scholarship to attend the classes in late November and early December and then take my certification test. I am looking for a job in the Atlanta area so that I may be active in the field. My backround consists of working five years in "The Manors" located in Tarpon Spring, FL. I was hired on as a unit secretary and after seeing the repore I had with the clients, was asked to become a Mental Health Tech. I tried it and loved it! I ran groups did ADLS with certain clients, assisted the nurses, took the clients out shopping and pic nics. After that I took the job as staffing supervisor for the entire hospital (120 beds)
The hospital closed and I took a job for a few years working with Alzheimers patients, they were awsome and just needed an ear and a shower (ha) mostly. I was certified in Alzheimer level I & II care. MARS care, First Aid and CPR. Since I had a knack for dealing well with both clients and their families, I was moved right up to top aide. I have a dual diagnosis of depression/substance abuse and have been continuously sober since April 2008. I have no ties and able to relocate should the job require it. I hope that some one out there will read this and be able to help me out. I was on unemployment, but thats a done deal now. I have also had diversity and client confidentially training.... I am hoping that a first step would be to establish peer specialist training. I plan to share what I've read at our next meeting. As a consumer who has serious doubts about the changes to the county mental health delivery system in recent years, I'm trying to be proactive by making the most of advocacy opportunities. | Comments: | I grew up in an Alcholic home. I attended CO-Anon weekly meetings for over 4 years- my step-son is my qualifier. I've been attending weekly ACA meetings since Feb of this year. I was diagnosed with depression in June 2008 and initially prescribed 300 mg/day of Wellbutrin XL. I am now taking 150mg every other day and doing quite well. To assit in my recovery I am meditating at least twice a day. I now exercise daily. I am on a gluten free diet. If I am accepted I will begin CPS training in August. |

Working with "PEERS" that know what you're experiencing, what you have experienced, and what IS possible for your future, is an amazing practice!! PEERS are often not able to gain the education needed to be given the opportunity to work with others now where they have been before. Aquiring a Masters degree is almost impossible for the mentally ill, but this program opens the door for those able to teach from their experiences. BRAVO!! I have been in and out of AA for over 20 years and struggled with relapse several times until 6 years ago; when because of addiction and depression I lost a 24 year marriage and fell off a fourth floor hotel balcony. After 5 weeks in a drug induced coma, 6 more weeks in the hospital and 12 weeks in a wheel chair a finally came to grips with the implications of my addiction and have totally overcome the desire to use drugs to avoid strong emotions. Having used since I was 7 years old the last 6 years has been a difficult learning experience that is quite possibly the best thing to happen in my life. I now feel others could benefit from the understanding and perspective that I have gained on this difficult journey.
I hope to attend the fall training and look forward to being a Certified Peer Specialist. |
