I am not a Basnett but I am trying to find out about a Dr. Henry Basnett who practiced in Texas for 30 years, and was the son of a Major D.J. Basnett.He belonged to the Masons in Good Standing. Very uncommon name, so I'm sure most of us are related somewhere down the line. When growing up in Toronto, all Basnett's in the phone book were uncles or cousins. From some research that I have down (which is very little) I have noted that many Basnetts immigrated to Western Canada in the late 1800's and to various parts of the US as early as the 1700's such as Missouri, Deleware and West Virginia. As a matter of fact, there is a small town in West Virginia named Basnettville. Cool Eh! |

I'm doing research for a story about a woman named Betsy Bazinette, a free black woman who lived in Hanover County, Virginia in 1837. She was involved in a surprising court case in which she sued five white men (all last name Tinsley) who were conspiring to kidnap and sell her. She was successful in her petition and I'm looking for any information on where her family (her mother and grandmother were both also free blacks) might have come from. She appears to have had some relation to the Tinsley family, and the Bazinette name is not only uncommon, it is unique, in the Hanover area. I was unaware until finding this site that the spelling might be a corruption of Basnett (or for that matter a half-dozen other spelling possibilities).

He married Elizabeth Chalmley and had 4 children( George 1901, Frederick 1903(?), Joseph William 1903, May 1909)- I believe they would all have been born in either Mold or Chester. Joseph William Basnett had 2 children, David John Basnett 1946 and myself, Gillian Margaret Basnett 1952 - both born in Newmarket, Suffolk. I also lived in Lebanon, Missouri, US (Basnett reunion location) and was shocked to see seven or eight Basnetts in the telephone book when I moved there. Later met Charlene Bassnett Schoonover who worked so hard on the US Bassnett geneology. My ancesters came from Birkenhead but my grandfather Watson Bassnett was born in the Barrow-in-Furness area in the 1880s. His father William was a shipbuilder and his grandfather, also William was married to Kitty O'Shea in the RC church in Birkenhead. That's as much as we know. Loved the story about the boys being farmed out by their mother. Perhaps he was one and that's why we can't find any more information. |

| Comments: | Apparently there are 2 Bassnett family lines in the UK: there was a Mayor of Coventry called Bassnett during the English Civil war in the C17th so there is a Misdlands branch and there are lots of Bassnetts/Basnetts from around south lancashire/Cheshire/North Wales. One of my great-aunts used to say her father was one of 5 illegitimate sons born to a Sarah Bassnett who farmed her boys out around the Cheshire-Liverpool-Manchester region and they grew up not knowing she was their mother or that they had brothers. My greatgrandfather was one of the boys. Has anyone out there come across this story or is it just legend? |

| Comments: | Born not far from where my grandfather William arrived in 1636; oldest family line in US. Many of us are still here in the same general area, the Outer Banks of NE NC and SW VA. Our name changed abt 1770 to "Basnight". Here's a tip..most Missori/Kansas Basnetts come from this line:
William>Robert>Robert>Issac>etc... Its ironic that most of us who stayed in the same area that William settled had our name change, while those who left stayed Basnetts or Bassnetts. We just attended a Basnett reunion in Lebanon, Missouri, USA last month and many Basnett members were there.
