| Comments: | There is an artical in the Bournemouth Daily Echo dated Saturday December 15: 2007 'Secret of a Victorian door' a restorer found concealed on the door the following names and dated 1868 G Dorey,Old Newton, John Frampton, Robert Golton, G Summers, W Roff and Mr Eli Cosser. One had signed Mr G Britton, pugilist boxer prize fighter Bournemouth Hants 1868. It is believed Mr Golton employed John Frampton who himself was an important man in the building and development of Highcliffe.
Hope this is of interest. Pete |

| Comments: | My grandmother was Florence May Golton, born in Wistow, Yorks in 1896, daughter of James Golton and Sarah Ann, nee Durham.
She married George Henry Thompson, of Stockbridge Farm, Ryther and died in her 40s. My mother was her eldest child, Mary. I have only a couple of photos of her, and also some unidentified ones from that side of the family, around WW1 - one of the unknown girls in the picture is wearing a brooch that my mum inherited, and I now have, is how I'm sure the photo is of Goltons. |

| Comments: | stories from relatives Gloria Kuzyk(Canada) 3June04 and Chris Upton 6Feb04 told of Sam Golton being packed off to Canada but we did not know exactly when. At last, from the "www.findmypast.com" shipping passenger list data (1890-1926 so far) I found:
Mr S Golton age 26 left London on 29th March 1906 onboard the Pomeranian bound for Halifax. N.B. Over many years my cousin Audrey and I have accumulated all B/M/D entries from the London registers from 1837 to ~1930 and will be happy to email the small GO/GOU and GA/GAU text files to anyone interested; they have been well checked. |

| Comments: | Hi- I noticed that you have a birth of one Quarton Houlden Golton to Thomas James Golton and Annie Elizabeth Houlden in your list. I've been researching the Houlden family. My wife is a gg granddaughter of Quarton Houlden of Leyland. Given the recurrence of the first name of Quarton I feel sure there must be a relationship. BTW: Quarton is a family name from Barmby Moor, ER of Yorkshire. There were intermarriages between the Quartons and Houldens (also from Barmby Moor). It would be great if you have any further details to help identify the connection. Cheers. |

| Comments: | Both My Grandfather and father seemed sure that our name was previously Goolton, from the town of Goole which is up the river from Grimsby in Yorkshire.
This was verified when I could not go back very far when doing my family tree. The Mormon records show that a Goolton had a son called Goulton, all subsequent relatives of mine became Goultons, Perhaps a scribe changed the birth certificate. There is some logic to this theory when one researches Grimsby and My grandfather. |

A couple of days ago, we saw a couple of Goltons on the war memorial in Kelfield (In the normally locked Village Institute), so we're wonderin which side of the Ouse our branch of the Goltons came from, as we'd always assumed they were the Cawood/Ryther side but it now looks possible they could have been from the very village where we now live. We have a lot of information on the Thompsons, but as Florence died quite young, know nothing of the Goltons yet except that they were a farming family. If anyone has come across Florence May as a sibling maybe of one of 'their' Goltons, please email us to set us off in the right direction! |

| Comments: | I've recently discovered that my gt-gt-grandmother was Maria Elizabeth Galton, born to Francis Galton (a jeweller) and Maria at St Pancras, London, November 21 1825. She married John George Edwards, a cabinet maker (b. 1816 at Dockhead, Horsleydown, London) at Hoxton, London, on September 25, 1849. There seem to have been very few Galtons in London at that time. More important than her relationship to me is the fact that she was the great-grandmother of Sir George Edwards OM CBE, the aircraft designer, former Chairman of the British Aircraft Corporation and head (on the British side) of the Concorde project. He died in 2003 at the age of 94 and will be remembered, among other things, for the Vickers Viscount, the Valiant (Britain's first V-bomber) and VC10.
If anyone has information about Francis Galton's ancestors, I should be interested to know. Best of luck with this website! |

| Comments: | Dear Gloria,
Thanks for your entry in the Golton Guestbook. As it happens I do have a more or less complete family tree (not yet added to the website due to lack of time recently) for your branch of the Golton's. Furthermore I was recently in contact with Chris Upton who not only added more family tree information in this area but also supplied a copy of a photograph that included your missing relatives. His note to me implied that your Grandfather Sam 'was sent to Canada following a fight'. Chris's Grandmother was Edith Mabel Golton (1883) who was a sister to Samuel John Golton. Chris's copy of the family tree shows that Sam had brothers Robert Gustavus (1876), Henry James (1877), Ernest William (1882), Walter Frank (1885) and sisters Ellen Agnes (1875), Isobel Jane (1881), Edith Mabel (1883) and Hilda Winifred (1887). I'm copying this note to Chris as I'm sure that he would be able to fill in your missing details for you (and much more)! Best regards. Howard Golton Derby, England |

| Comments: | My grandfather was Samuel John Golton, born 1880 Pokesdown Hampshire, England. He was the son of James Golton and Agnes Kerley. So far all the members of his family that I have been able to find are a sister Ellen Agnes, brothers Robert, and Harry. I also have a postcard sent to me in May of 1950 from an Aunt Doreen, I don't know what relation she was to the Golton's. The address at that time was 2 Cromwell Rd. Pokesdown, Bournemouth. She talks about my grandfather not knowing the place now. If anyone has any information regarding Samuel's family please let me know as I have been trying for some time now to find out all the information I can. |

| Comments: | Here's a bit of fun information. The well known Newfoundland song "Lukey's Boat" is about a Luke Gaulton from Brookfield, Newfoundland (my great great grandfather). For those of you who know the song this might be interesting : ) |

| Comments: | In out family history we have an Alfred Gotten/Golten/Gaulton depending on who wrote his name(from England) who married one of my ancestors a Margaret Stokes in 1843. I am guessing he was born about 1820's. I would be intereted in knowing if you have anybody in your ancestral line that came to Newfoundland. Sincerely Terry |

| Comments: | In case anyone is interested: I am preparing a small booklet about the Goulton family of Husthwaite (a place 5 km north of Easingwold in North Yorkshire) where they built the large house called Highthorne in the 1660s.
The earliest Goulton event in this district is 1600. The family established itself at Husthwaite from the 1620s. (The surname also appears as Golton and Gowlton). In the 1680s the family divided into two, when Christopher Goulton remarried and moved to his wife’s place at Bessingby (near Bridlington). CG’s eldest son remained at Husthwaite, and the direct male line there finally died out in 1815. CG’s eldest son by his second marriage Thomas remained at Bessingby but his son Christopher settled at Beverley, where he was a well known attorney. His son Thomas was still active at Beverley in 1815+. That’s as far as I intend taking the story. |
