I was 23 yrs. old at the first hospital birth (Summer Dawn, 7 lbs.) and 38 and 40 yrs. old at the second two home births (Sage Gabriel 8 lbs. and Kenzie Michael 7 lbs). My youngest boy was born in the caul after 2 1/2 hours labor. |

| Comments: | How excellent to find a sane, responsible alternative to the cold and clinical world of what is termed "safe childbirth." My husband Wendell and I are thrilled at the exciting options that are now open to us. We have been married 15 years and have 5 children and I, much like you, have almost despaired at ever being able to reach for the finish line of becoming a midwife.
I went back to college when our first child turned a year old. Since I wanted to attend college part time (in order to devote the majority of my time to my growing family), I found it impossible to become a nurse AT ALL because of the full time schedule required at the colleges that were affordable to us. Instead of pursuing my dreams, I obtained a degree in psychology (which disappionted me with its liberal anti-family, anti-child, and anti-God foundations). Later, I studied music and found it much more helpful in curing most ills. Still, though, I wanted MORE. I've always loved science and helping people but as far as being able to make a difference in the world, I've had the options of either spouting out nutty Freud's opinions or singing my "patients" to sleep. Not a very appealing cure, huh? I think you can imagine my joy at having found your website. I REALLY DON'T WANT TO BE A PROFESSIONAL COLLEGE STUDENT! Wendell and I haven't yet decided which route we will take, yet, but, even if I DO have to go back to school again I won't mind a bit because, this time, the dream is at the end of the line. Thank you so much for the info. I'd love to hear from you if you get the chance. You sound like somebody I'd like to know. P.S. I live in Southwest GA. Do you have a list of midwives that I could potentially apprentice under? Our area is really hurting for medical help. Our healthcare workers are leaving the area and those remaining are SWAMPED. All midwives I know are hospital-oriented ONLY. Too bad. Our area is very poor and many are unable to afford medical care at all - let alone a hospital visit! Several of the nurses I know and went to college with have an incredible predjudice against poorer patients. I have witnessed many instances of sub-standard care and incredibly rude treatment of poorer patients. One nurse at a hospital where I was a patient even spoke loudly about an old man who obviously was poor and on public assistance. "Rachael," she said, I make over $30 and hour and our E.R. doctors make in excess of $100 per hour. These people are on medicaid and it might pay $15. Let 'em wait! They make me Sick!" "Well," I replied tongue in cheek, "If you're sick you're in a good place for it! But, let me ask you something if I may." She hesitated. "Okay." she replied. "You're making in excess of $25 per hour with a 2 year degree, right? That's quite a chunk of change for our town, isn't it? Are you getting paid for every hour that you work?" I asked. "'Course!" she said. "Well, if you are getting paid and the doctors are getting paid, what are you complaining about? Don't you think that the hospital expects you to earn your salary? Well then get over there and care for that gentleman. I believe he's waited long enough, don't you?" |
