Fort Dodge issued a recall of RabVac 3 TF serial number 873113A rabies vaccine on May 25, 2006 after a vaccinated dog contracted rabies (The Charlotte Observer http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/business/14786163.htm also http://www.dogsadversereactions.com/RabvacRecall.html). According to the recall letter, this batch of vaccine "was released into the veterinary market in November 2004 and expires June 29, 2006." Concerned pet owners can call Fort Dodge at 800-533-8536. This link http://wyovet.uwyo.edu/Diseases_2006.asp takes you to Wyoming's State Vet Lab website, which posted the recall letter--click on the appropriate icon.

The Rabies Challenge Fund

Two world-renowned giants of veterinary vaccine research -- Dr. W. Jean Dodds of Hemopet and Co-Trustee of The Rabies Challenge Fund and Dr. Ronald Schultz of the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine -- have volunteered their time to ensure that critical 5 and 7 year rabies challenge studies are conducted in the United States. The studies will be financed by The Rabies Challenge Fund Charitable Trust, a tax-exemption organization founded by Maine pet vaccine disclosure advocate Kris L. Christine in 2005, and will be performed by Dr. Schultz at the University of Wisconsin. The University has waived its 48% overhead fee for the studies.
The concurrent challenge studies will determine the duration of immunity conveyed by the canine rabies vaccine, with the goal of extending the state-mandated interval for boosters to 5, and then to 7 years. According to Dr. Dodds, “This is one of the most important projects in veterinary medicine. It will benefit all dogs by providing evidence that protection from rabies vaccination lasts at least 5 years, thereby avoiding unnecessary revaccination with its attendant risk of debilitating adverse reactions. "

Scientific data indicate that vaccinating dogs against rabies every three years, as most states require, is unnecessary. Studies have shown the duration of protective immunity as measured by serum antibody titers against rabies virus to persist for seven years post-vaccination, and results of a 1992 French challenge study led by Michel Aubert demonstrated dogs were immune to rabies five years after vaccination. Researchers believe the rabies vaccine causes the most and worst adverse reactions in animals and concur that it should not be given more often than necessary to maintain immunity. Adverse reactions to rabies vaccination can include autoimmune diseases affecting the thyroid, joints, blood, eyes, skin, kidney, liver, bowel and central nervous system; anaphylactic shock; aggression; seizures; epilepsy; and fibrosarcomas at injection sites.

Dr. Schultz states that “[s]howing that a vaccine for rabies can provide 5 or preferably 7 years of immunity would have great significance not only in controlling rabies but more importantly in reducing the adverse vaccine reactions that can occur in dogs and cats after vaccination."

More information on The Rabies Challenge Fund and the 5 and 7 year challenge studies it will finance can be found at: WWW.RABIESCHALLENGEFUND.ORG .

Comments:Hi there,

I really enjoyed visiting your web page. We had a wonderful yellow lab named Muffin for 12 years and we had to put her down this week due to cancer. Needless to say, we are heartbroken. She was more than a dog...she was a joy to us. We're not ready for another dog just yet but we always said, once you have a lab, you'll never want any other kind of dog. I'll save your website to my "favorites" and visit again when we are ready for our new friend. Your puppies made me smile. Thanks.

Comments:you have beautiful dogs! We have really enjoyed your site, in fact several times. We are lab lovers also. We have a 5 1/2 yr old blk female, who we got at 9 wks, and a 9 yr. old yellow female that was a rescue from a puppy breeding mill that we got last summer. The yellow is the not so popular fox red color. We love them both. We tell the kids all the time that if we'd had the dogs first we would not have had them! LOL!!! I wish we had a large farm so we could fill it with labs! We are not in the country, but we are on a quiet dead end street, and we feel like we are sometimes. We have a huge fenced in back yard, which the dogs really love. Some day, when the kids are out of the house, we are going to get another. (they are 16 and 14 now) We have never had a male lab, we seem to prefer the female personalities. Anyway, we have enjoyed your site, and plan on visiting it often.

WAS RAISED WITH "HEINZ 57's, LOVED THEM ALL TO DEATH. THEN IN 1989 OUR COCKER DIED (13YRS) AND HUBBY GAVE ME A CHOICE OF A LAB OR A GOLDEN, I TOOK THE LAB AND HAVEN'T LOOKED BACK YET. OUR FIRST WAS STOLEN AT 7 MOS, THEN I JUST HAD TO HAVE A DOG. IN 1991 I FOUND "BO", THE VERY BEST DOG I HAVE EVER HAD!!!HAD TO PUT HIM DOWN IN 1997, CANCER, YUK !!! NOW WE HAVE CISCO, HE'S ALMOST 4 YRS., HAD SOME TROUBLE WHEN HE WAS 6 MOS - 12 MOS AS TO WHO WAS GOING TO BE "ALPHA" GUESS WE BOTH WON THAT ONE, HE'S STILL HERE AND SO AM I. WOULDN'T CHANGE HIM FOR THE WORLD. HE'S SMART, QUICK AND VERY LOVING. I TELL HIM TO GET ANY CERTAIN TOY FROM THE TOY BOX (THEY ALL HAVE NAMES) AND HE GETS THE RIGHT ONE EVERY TIME. SORRY TO GO ON SO LONG. I JUST REALLY LOVE MY DOG AND LIKE TO SHARE HIM WITH ANYONE WHO WILL LISTEN. I MAY CONTACT YOU ABOUT ONE OF YOUR OLDER DOGS WHEN WE ARE READY FOR A NEW ONE. HOPEFULLY THAT WON'T BE ANYTIME SOON. BUT I THINK THE NEXT TIME WE'RE READY FOR AN ADULT DOG AND NOT GOING THROUGH ALL THE PUPPY STUFF, GETTING TOO OLD I GUESS. HUBBY WASN'T RAISED WITH ANY ANIMALS AT ALL SO I'D SAY HE'S DUE FOR A REST. HE WOULDN'T TRADE CISCO EITHER THOUGH. I THINK I CONVERTED HIM TO A DOG LOVER. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME ANYTIME AND I PLAN ON VISITING YOUR WEBSITE AGAIN. GOOD LUCK WITH THE TWO NEW EXPECTED LITTERS. GOLD BLESS AND HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS. CINDY
