The studies will be financed by The Rabies Challenge Fund Charitable Trust, a tax-exemption organization founded by Maine pet vaccine disclosure advocate Kris L. Christine in 2005, and will be performed by Dr. Schultz at the University of Wisconsin. The University has waived its 48% overhead fee for the studies. The concurrent challenge studies will determine the duration of immunity conveyed by the canine rabies vaccine, with the goal of extending the state-mandated interval for boosters to 5, and then to 7 years. According to Dr. Dodds, “This is one of the most important projects in veterinary medicine. It will benefit all dogs by providing evidence that protection from rabies vaccination lasts at least 5 years, thereby avoiding unnecessary revaccination with its attendant risk of debilitating adverse reactions. " Scientific data indicate that vaccinating dogs against rabies every three years, as most states require, is unnecessary. Studies have shown the duration of protective immunity as measured by serum antibody titers against rabies virus to persist for seven years post-vaccination, and results of a 1992 French challenge study led by Michel Aubert demonstrated dogs were immune to rabies five years after vaccination. Researchers believe the rabies vaccine causes the most and worst adverse reactions in animals and concur that it should not be given more often than necessary to maintain immunity. Adverse reactions to rabies vaccination can include autoimmune diseases affecting the thyroid, joints, blood, eyes, skin, kidney, liver, bowel and central nervous system; anaphylactic shock; aggression; seizures; epilepsy; and fibrosarcomas at injection sites. Dr. Schultz states that “[s]howing that a vaccine for rabies can provide 5 or preferably 7 years of immunity would have great significance not only in controlling rabies but more importantly in reducing the adverse vaccine reactions that can occur in dogs and cats after vaccination." We have a 5 1/2 yr old blk female, who we got at 9 wks, and a 9 yr. old yellow female that was a rescue from a puppy breeding mill that we got last summer. The yellow is the not so popular fox red color. We love them both. We tell the kids all the time that if we'd had the dogs first we would not have had them! LOL!!! I wish we had a large farm so we could fill it with labs! We are not in the country, but we are on a quiet dead end street, and we feel like we are sometimes. We have a huge fenced in back yard, which the dogs really love. Some day, when the kids are out of the house, we are going to get another. (they are 16 and 14 now) We have never had a male lab, we seem to prefer the female personalities. Anyway, we have enjoyed your site, and plan on visiting it often. |

A 6 month old Yelw bitch, a 5 month old Choc bitch who I just get a few weeks ago, and a 1yr. old Choc male how has the sweetest disposition I have ever had. I am intrested in showing my two youngest bitches and have never done anything like this befor. I might be intrested in coming to see your kennels if thats ok and talk w/you about how to get started in showing and what to look for when breeding my dogs. The Blk bitch and the Choc.male are more feild quality Labs and the two other bitches look more like show quality Labs, in my opinion. All of my dogs have excellent backgrounds for their hips. Hi, I have two labrador one black, the other tan the balck one's name is Itybit and the tan one is coco, today we had to take both to the vet they started getting real sick. Come to fine out the black one had hook worms, the other had distemper. My family and i had to make up our mines what to do about the itybit we have always had labrador dog's I love them very much. I have cried all day because the doctor said it was really to late for itybit so i had to put him to sleep. Do you think i did the wrong thing he was my baby i miss him very much. Coco we are trying to save him from distemper please pray for him to make it i dont think i could stand the tought of loosing two dogs at one time.
