Comments:Each year, beginning about late June, the humpbacks leave Antarctica to migrate northwards to their tropical calving grounds, especially in the Pearls Archipelago , Panama.

The first groups to be seen in Panama are usually the newly pregnant females, followed by the immature whales of both sexes, and then come the mature males and females.

The humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is aptly named from the Greek ‘mega’ meaning ‘great’ and ‘pteron’ meaning ‘a wing’, because of its huge winglike flippers. It is the fifth largest of the great whales. Adult females grow to 19 metres, slightly longer than adult males. A mature humpback may weigh 40 tonnes.

Humpbacks are generally blackish with white underneath and at the sides.

From July to October , you can see them in the Pearls Islands, Panama .

You can rent a catamaran with Las Perlas Sailing , the best way to see them .

Comments:Hello,
I am currently working as a helicopter pilot in the Solomon islands. This morning on a flight back to base camp I saw three small, baleen whales in classic feeding behaviour, accompanied by a number of large manta rays. They were blue/grey on top and white below, moderately long pectoral fins, I didn't pay any attention to their dorsal fins soory, too busy watching the amazing feeding in the crystal clear coral lagoon water. I want to say they are
dwarf Minkes but they have fairly blunted heads rather than the more pointed head I am used to seeing on Minkes. They are long and tapering with a shape from above very much like a very small blue whale. I will try and get some photos later today if they are still around. Of course today was the only day I left my camera behind.
I have a significant amount of experience sighting, watching and identifying whales as I live and fly in Tropical North Queensland (Great Barrier Reef). I found Migaloo the white humpback for the first time in 4 years off Cairns, I've watched humpbacks being born, teaching their babies to breach and tail-slap, but I can't figure out what these whales are. I didn't think Minkes fed in the tropics?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Brendon

I am using FinEx, Fin Scan and Darwin to aid with the photo identification process and was wondering if anyone knew of any other software that has been developed so a concise comparative study can be made within my PhD.

Name: Luna's Friend
E-mail address: LunaShallBeFree@Yahoo.com
Comments:Luna Needs Your Help!!

Luna was born in September 1999, in the US waters of the San Juan Island's off the coast of Washington. In July of 2001, Luna showed up in Nootka Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. He was a baby, alone and stranded.

Resident Orca that live off our shores do so within a family structure, called Pods. Their whole lives are spent together. Luna’s pod, the L Pod, spends their summer near the San Juan Islands.

Since Luna has been without his family these nearly 3 years he has been lonely and in danger. He socializes with people, boats and float planes all of which have harmed him in one way or another. Now is our chance to help Luna go back to his home waters and his family, but he needs your help to go home!

On April 05, 2004, Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and NOAA Fisheries announced plans to attempt to reintroduce Luna to his pod in May. At a media conference in Vancouver and a public forum on Orcas Island, DFO and NOAA Fisheries discussed the plan. Canada will lead Luna’s capture and move, while the United States will lead post monitoring.

Beginning in May, DFO and NOAA will try to locate the L Pod. If they are close to Nootka Sound, DFO will attempt a “soft reunification” to lead Luna out towards the open waters into L Pods acoustical range. DFO and NOAA will use the resources from existing sightings networks and their own reports to try to locate the L Pod. The chance of finding the L Pod near Nootka Sound is slim however.

If L Pod does not appear near Nootka Sound by mid-May, DFO will focus on the “capture, move and release” plan. This plan calls for a capture of Luna in Nootka Sound and placement in a seaside net pen for medical screening, which will take about 5 days.

Although not confirmed, it is expected that Luna will be moved by truck to the southern tip of Vancouver Island. There has not been a decision on where Luna’s southern net pen will be located as DFO is still consulting with scientists about the best location. It will have to be within acoustical range of the Southern Residents orca population.

Once Luna is in his southern net pen, a tracking device will be placed on him. He will be released when he makes contact with his family. The US Navy will assist in satellite tagging and tracking so Luna can be followed.

The Canadian and US governments have committed a combined amount of $200,000 (US) to help finance the project. The total cost to transport Luna, including in-kind donations, may be up to $500,000 (US). The Vancouver Aquarium (Vancouver, British Columbia) and The Whale Museum (Friday Harbor, Washington) are now accepting donations from the public. Both organizations will assist with the move and monitoring programs.

Please, make a tax deductible contribution to the "Luna Fund" and help Luna get back to his family.

In the United States: The Whale Museum's "Luna Stewardship Fund" will soon be online at http://www.whalemuseum.org/index.html or call: 1-800-946-7227, ext.24

In Canada: The Vancouver Aquarium's "Help Rescue Luna" fund is online at: http://www.vanaqua.org/mmrr/luna/ or call: 1-800-663-0562
(US resident's can also donate through the Aquarium's online site)

For more information on Luna's story, please visit: http://www.ReuniteLuna.com

Background information on Luna is also at: http://www.vanaqua.org/mmrr/luna/background.php

Details of the plan and other documents can be found at the NOAA Fisheries web site: http://www.nwr.noaa.gov/mmammals/whales/L98/index.htm

Please send this request to everyone you know. Funding MUST be secured before L Pod arrives. WE NEED YOUR HELP!!

Thank you!!
