| Comments: | Sahodaran Smaraka Committee is celebrating the 92nd anniversary of ' misrabhojanam'. In 1917 Sahodaran Ayyappan organised a function in which Ezhavas took food from the 'leaf' of two pulayas - Mr Ayyar and his son Kannan. All the Ezhavas were ex-communicated by thier village organisation for a long time. Misrabhojanam along with daliths was considered a big sin in those days. The situation is similar in villages of Bihar and UP even today. A survey has shown that a crime is being committed against a dalith every 20 minutes in India. It may be in
the form of denial of well water, denial of permission to conduct marriage processions,beating up for silly reasons, rape or murder. Kerala is heaven when compared with north India. All because of Narayanaguru and his desciples like K Ayyappan. |

| Comments: | I am writing here a different from above. Gulf News. If anybody heard about "Sevanam" in UAE, please write it to me on this e-mail ID.
What I know will write it here. One Peethambaran Mash from Chennai, visited Dubai (Last of 2002) to see his daughter in Sharjah. He realized that there is lot of Malyalees in UAE who is getting 400 to 800 dhs monthly as salary for their heavy duty. To get any relief for these poor peoples from Indian Embassy, he decided to see the Consular General Dubai. He and his daughter got an appointment with the then Consular General Sr. George Joseph. He advised to get some more people who have the same idea and will make meeting. There were 18 people from different part of UAE when a second meeting conducted in Dubai Consulate Hall, and decided to name “Sevanam” an association to help organize the poor people in UAE. Sri Peethambaran Master left UAE after giving advises by written and organized one Unit of Sevanam in Dubai. To surprise Sri Peethabaran Master, this Sevanam made a hit in UAE. Now there were more than 5000 members in this association. But another surprise for master is that, he is no were in the history of Sevanam, but only Vellappally Natesan. On Aug.2003, Sevanam got registration by consulate and celebrate Onam 2003 in a very professionally. In that Onam, Peethabaran Master honored and Vellappally Natesan & Vidya Sagar was the chief guest. But now, Master is nowhere!!!! His name vanished or removed form Sevanam’s history. Who can say who is responsible for this mystery? Write to me. |

I am at present in Abu Dhabi It is by chance I came to this site. When going thru I find many many responses during the previous years. But nowadys it has become less. Is it shrinking like any other activities. I find Mr.Vellappally natesan a courgeous leader. But, his efforts are getting less appalause from the Sree narayana people. Once the Chief minister R.Shankar was a prominent SNDP leader. But now the Chief minister Achuthanandan is hesistant to admmit that he is from Ezhava Community. This is because of the pathetic situation of the community. Situation should improve. As Mr.Natesan insists the Unity of the Community should improve and prominent people should take efforts. What I fould in the Community is that once they find themselves in a satisfied and cool position they never lends back a hand for any support of the mass poor. This is worst phenomenon. As Mr.Natesan once mentioned we are turning to Ezahva Brahmins and this of course spoils the total courage even for strong negotiations by the leadership. |

Did Guru say that he installed idol of Ezhava Sivan in 1888? No proof.There is definite proof for his having said it in 1908 at Thalassery. Congress leader Moyyarath Sankaran nambiar has recorded it in his autobiography. The brahmin who questioned Guru was Mananthala Neelakantan Moosad. Guru said " I am going to install an Ezhava/Theeya Siavan. Is there anything in sasthras prohibiting it ?" Moosad had no answer. |

Recently a temple was established in Kozhikode district for Guru. By worshipping Guru as God their plann is to ignore all his teachings. Guru demolished temples where Kuttichaathan, kandaran and other blood-thirsty and toddy-drinking gods were being worshipped. He threw those idols into canals. Now Ezhavas are re-installing those idols in newly built temples. |

| Comments: | I think the comments of Mr Panikker dt.1st Sept.was unfair. Dr.Kanam Sankarapillai has every right to project Thaikkat Ayyav as a guru of Narayanaguru. Ayyavu taught him yoga and probably saivasiddhantham also. Some said Ayyavu was a brahmin, others said he was a paraya. Both were wrong. Recently reprt came in the papers, the ganaka ( kaniyan)community claiming that he belonged to their caste. This OBC (other backward community)takes the title 'panikker'. They are good in astrology. Narayanaguru had three gurus - Chempazhanthippillai who taught him the alphabet, Kummampilly Raman Pillai Asan who taught him Kavyam, Naatakam and Alamkaram and Ayyavu who taught him yoga. Please dont make Narayanaguru, the guru of Kummampilly Asan. |

The background for Swamiji calling a Kerala a lunatic asylum is related to a mental hospital where Dr Palpu was working and Swamiji just visited before coming to Kerala. Almost all "intellectual" personalities of Kerala and elsewhere are quoting Swami Vivekananda's famous (infamous?)quote with reference to Kerala of "A lunatic asylum" when they try to recount on Sreenarayana Guru and Kerala. I can't see this as a fairness comment. Swami Vivekananda couldn't see any such "asylums" elsewhere in India then? Now in this 21st century, we shall be able to see such many asylums across our country. Had he colluded with the very existing state of truth then? | Comments: | Dr. Kanam Shankara Pillai is not a renowned or recognised Historian. The victory of any great personality starts with the severing of their Guru. The ultimate knowledge starts from there. The disciple then becomes the Guru of their Guru. I think Dr. Kanam may be aware of this. One who go through the biography of Sreenarayana Guru can understand this. Guru's one of the earliest teachers("guru") of Kayamkulam, Kummanpalli RAMANPILLAI ASAN admires Sreenarayana Guru at many occassions during his tenure of 4 years with him. And Ramanpillai Asan had accepted Sreenarayana Guru as his "GURU". Here, I am not trying to belittle or denigrade Thycaud Ayyavu. Sreenarayana Guru taught Yoga from Ayyavu is a fact. It doesn't mean that Ayyavu fully nurtured Sreenarayana Guru. Dr. Kanam and people of his ilk are trying to project Ayyavu in the manner which I have mentioned above. This must be opposed to! |

Mr Nath is not correct here. Proper and improper depends upon who is using the term with what meaning. Turkish, Ethiopians, many Arabs and many others refers to Indians as Hindus even now. Can Mr Nath say they are wrong? In reality, Hindu comes from the word Sindhu (the river). Religious meaning came afterwards. In reality, it is the religious Hindus who are misusing the term. Why does Mr Nath endorse the religious people's usage and then oppose the term itself? When does the term appear in Indian literature? Is it ever mentioned in our ancient epics, puranas etc? |

On the other hand, I have also read and disagreed with M.K.Gandhi's Why I Am a Hindu. My acquaintance with these writings has inspired me to write this essay explaining why I am not a Hindu, though I was born in a Hindu family. The Meaning of "Hindu" The word "Hindu" is a much-abused word in the sense that it has been used to mean different things at different times. For example, some people even now, at least some times, use the word "Hindu" as a synonym for "Indian". In this sense of the term, I am certainly a "Hindu" because I do not deny being an Indian. However, I do not think that this a proper use of the term "Hindu". There are many Indians such as Muslims, Christians, Jews and Zoroastrians as well as rationalists, humanists and atheists who do not call themselves "Hindu" and also do not like to be described as such. It is certainly not fair to convert them into Hinduism by giving an elastic definition of the term "Hindu". Besides, it is also not advisable to use the word "Hindu" in this sense from the point of view of clarity. The word "Hindu" may have been used in the beginning as a synonym for "Indian" [1], but, at present, the word is used for people with certain definite religious beliefs. The word "Hindu" belongs to the category of words like "Muslim", "Christian", "Buddhist" and "Jain" and not to the category of words like "American", "British", "Australian", "Chinese" or "Japanese". There are, in fact, many Indians who are not Hindus, and on the other hand, there are many Hindus who are not Indians , for example, those who are citizens of Nepal, Sri Lanka and some other countries. In the religious sense, the word, "Hindu" is often used broadly to include Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs in addition to those who are described as "Hindu" in this most restricted sense of the term, that is, the adherents of Vedic or Brahmin religion. For example, the expression "Hindu" is used in the Hindu law not only for those who are Hindu by religion but also for persons who are Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs by religion. This, again, is too broad a definition of "Hindu". If we consistently use the word "Hindu" in this sense, we will have to say that Japan is a Hindu country! The above definition of "Hindu" is clearly inadequate from a philosophical point of view. Buddhism and Jainism, for instance, explicitly reject the doctrine of the infallibility of the Vedas and the system of varna-vyavastha, which are fundamental to Hinduism, that is, if the term "Hinduism" is used in its most restricted sense. Therefore, clubbing together Buddhists and Jains or even Sikhs with those who believe in the infallibility of the Vedas and subscribe to the varna-vyavastha is nothing but an invitation to confusion. Though I agree with Buddhism in its rejection of god, soul, infallibility of the Vedas and the varna-vyavastha, still I am not a Hindu even in this broad sense of the term "Hindu", because as a rationalist and humanist I reject all religions including Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. However, in this essay I am concerned with explaining why I am not a Hindu in the most appropriate sense of the term "Hindu", that is, the sense in which a person is a Hindu if his religion is Hinduism in the restricted sense of the term " Hinduism". In this restricted sense of "Hinduism", Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism are excluded from its scope. I also maintain that this is, at present, probably the most popular sense of the term, and every body should, in the interest of clarity, confine its use, as far as possible, to this sense only, at least in philosophical discourse. Radhakrishnan, for example, has used the term "Hindu" and "Hinduism" in this restricted sense when he says in his The Hindu View of Life that, "The chief sacred scriptures of Hindus, the Vedas register the intuitions of the perfected souls." [2] Or, when he says that "Hinduism is the religion not only of the Vedas but of the Epics and the Puranas." [3] Basic Beliefs of Hinduism Gandhi, too, has used the term "Hindu" in this restricted sense, when writing in Young India in October, 1921, he says: I call myself a sanatani Hindu, because, I believe in the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Puranas and all that goes by the name of Hindu scriptures, and therefore in avatars and rebirth. I believe in the Varnashram dharma in a sense in my opinion strictly Vedic, but not in its present popular and crude sense. I believe in the protection of the cow in its much larger sense than the popular. I do not disbelieve in idol-worship. [4] One may be tempted to ask, at this point, whether all the beliefs listed by Gandhi are really fundamental to Hinduism. In my opinion, (I) the belief in the authenticity of the Vedas and (II) the belief in the varnashram dharma are more basic to Hinduism than the belief in cow-protection and idol-worship. [5] Though it cannot be denied that, in spite of attempts by reformers like Kabir, Rammohan Roy and Dayanand Saraswati, idol-worship is still practiced widely by the Hindu masses, and there is, at present, a taboo on eating beef among a large number of Hindus. In any case, I am in a position to establish the fact of my not being a Hindu by asserting the contradictory of each of the above statements made by Gandhi: In other words, I assert that I am not a Hindu, because, I do not believe in the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Puranas and all that goes by the name of Hindu scriptures, and therefore in avatars and rebirth. I do not believe in the varnashram dharma or varna-vyavastha either in the sense in which it is explained in Hindu dharma shastras like Manusmriti or in the so-called Vedic sense. I do not believe in the Hindu taboo of not eating beef. I disbelieve in idol-worship. However, while explaining why I am not a Hindu, I will concentrate mainly on (I) the belief in the authenticity of the Vedas, and (II) the varnashram dharma , which I consider more fundamental to Hinduism. Besides, in the concluding section of the essay, I will briefly discuss moksha, which is regarded as the highest end of life in Hinduism, and some other Hindu doctrines like karmavada and avatarvada. The infallibility of the Vedas First of all, let me explain what do I mean by saying that "I do not believe in the Vedas", and why I do not do so. The schools of ancient Indian thought are generally classified by orthodox Hindu thinkers into two broad categories, namely, orthodox ( astika) and heterodox ( nastika). The six main Hindu systems of thought -- Mimamsa, Vedanta, Sankhya, Yoga, Nyaya and Vaisheshika -- are regarded as orthodox ( astika), not because they believe in the existence of god, but because they accept the authority of the Vedas. [6] Out of the six orthodox systems of Hindu thought, Nyaya system is primarily concerned with the conditions of correct thinking and the means of acquiring true knowledge. According to Nyaya system, there are four distinct and separate sources of knowledge, namely, (i) perception (ii) inference (iii) comparison, and (iv) testimony or shabda. Shabda, which is defined in the Nyaya system as "valid verbal testimony" is further classified into (i) the scriptural ( vaidika), and (ii) the secular ( laukika). Vaidika or scriptural testimony is believed to be the word of god, and therefore, it is regarded as perfect and infallible .[7] Mimamsa or Purva Mimamsa, another orthodox Hindu system is "the outcome of the ritualistic side of the vedic culture". However, in its attempt to justify the authority of the Vedas, Mimamsa elaborately discusses different sources of valid knowledge. Naturally enough, among the various "sources of valid knowledge", Mimamsa pays greatest attention to testimony or authority, which, too, is regarded by it as a valid source of knowledge. There are, according to Mimamsa, two kinds of authority -- personal ( paurusheya) and impersonal ( apaurusheya). The authority of the Vedas is regarded by Mimamsa as impersonal. [8] As mentioned earlier, according to Nyaya, the authority of the Vedas is derived from their being the words of god. But Mimamsa, which does not believe in the existence of god, declares that the Vedas like the world, are eternal. They are not the work of any person, human or divine. The infallibility of the authority of the Vedas, according to Mimamsa, rests on the "fact" that they are not vitiated by any defect to which the work of imperfect persons is liable. [9] Thus, orthodox Hindu schools like Nyaya and Mimamsa regard the testimony of the Vedas as infallible, though they give different reasons for doing so. Well-known orthodox Hindu theologians like Shankar and Ramanuja believed in the authority of the Vedas. Manusmriti, too, upholds the infallibility of the Vedas. As pointed out by S.N.Dasgupta, "The validity and authority of the Vedas were acknowledged by all Hindu writers and they had wordy battles over it with the Buddhists who denied it." [10] The point worth noting is that though popularly Hinduism is a theistic religion, it is not essential to believe in the existence of god for being an orthodox Hindu -- belief in the authority of the Vedas is more important. When I say, "I do not believe in the Vedas", what I mean is that I do not regard the testimony of the Vedas as a valid source of knowledge. In other words when I say, "I do not believe in the Vedas", I do not mean that each and every proposition contained in the Vedas is false. It is quite possible that one may find a few true statements in the Vedas after great amount of patient research. But I assert that the truth or the falsity of a proposition is logically independent of its being contained or not contained in the Vedas. A proposition is true if there is a correspondence between the belief expressed by it and the facts. Otherwise, it is false. So, a proposition contained in the Vedas might be true, that is, if there is a correspondence between the belief expressed by it and the facts, but it is, I insist, not true because it is contained in the Vedas. I categorically reject as invalid every argument of the form: "The proposition P is contained in the Vedas. Therefore, the proposition P is true". Besides, I also assert that some propositions contained in the Vedas are certainly false. For example, according to Purusha-Sukta of Rig Veda , Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras originated respectively from the mouth, hands, thighs and feet of the purusha or the creator. I categorically reject this statement as false. I maintain that varna-vyavastha is a man-made social institution and it has nothing to do with the alleged creator of this world. I also reject both the reasons put forward in support of the infallibility of the Vedas. I neither regard them to be "the words of god" nor I consider them to be eternal and impersonal. I believe that Vedas were conceived, spoken and written by human beings. The question of their being "words of god" simply does not arise, because there are no good reasons for believing in the existence of god. The existence of an omnipotent, omniscient and benevolent god is totally inconsistent with the presence of suffering and evil in this world. It is impossible for god to exist. Read these too! First, I wish to make clear that I have no quarrel with Mr. Ramendra Nath for declaring that he is not a Hindu. He has listed four reasons for declaring why he is not a Hindu: "I do not believe in the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Puranas and all that goes by the name of Hindu scriptures, and therefore in avatars and rebirth". "I do not believe in the varnashram dharma or varna-vyavastha either in the sense in which it is explained in Hindu dharma shastras like Manusmriti or in the so-called Vedic sense". "I do not believe in the Hindu taboo of not eating beef". "I disbelieve in idol-worship". As it happens, I am fully in agreement with the above statements. I do not believe in the existence of any God or soul. Therefore the question of scriptures as divine revelations, rebirth and avatars is moot. I do not believe in the caste-system. I have eaten beef. Again, since I do not believe in God the question of worshipping anything--idols or otherwise--is moot. Nevertheless, I still call myself a Hindu. However that is a completely separate matter. Mr. Ramendra Nath has discussed in length why he rejects the Vedas as infallible. Since I have no disagreement with him on these grounds, I am skipping it. He next attacks "varna-vyavastha or varnashram dharma". If it had been a simple exposure of the evils of this system, again there would be no problem. But what I essentially find troubling is that he does not present a balanced appraisal. He rejects emphatically the story in the Vedas that the Brahmins are created from God's mouth, the Kshatriyas from his arms, Vaishyas from his thighs and Shudras from his feet--plainly this story appeared later to account for a reality that was already present. He dismisses evidence that originally it was nothing more than a functional division which ultimately hardened into a rigid system backed by the religious authority of the Brahmins and the military might of Kshatriyas as something unimportant to the issue at hand. After all, today the Hindu social system functions quite well in the metropolises where the rules of purity and impurity regarding caste are no longer important. Also when he discusses the evils from which Hinduism has traditionally suffered, he ignores the good that is in Hindu Dharma as well. In particular his criticisms against Manusmriti or Manusamhita is one-sided. Above all he ignores the entire picture to concentrate on certain negative aspects only. To put it plainly, I think his account is biased. II Ramendra Nath charges that Ram kills Sambuka, a Shudra, because he was performing tapasya or ascetic exercises which are the province of Brahmins alone. Certainly the story is there. But what he does not mention is that the story belongs to Uttarkanda (lit. "later chapter"). Along with the story of Rama's adventure, every child is also taught that this chapter was added much later and that Valmiki's Ramayana ends with Rama's coronation. In Valmiki's Ramayana itself, we have two very important stories: that of Guhak and Sabari. Guhak is a Nishada king of Sringaverpur who is described as Rama's friend as dear as life, with whom Rama stays while going to the forest (Ayodhyakandya, chaps. 50-52). Shabari was a practitioner of asceticism. Rama's first question on meeting her was, "Have you conquered all that disrupts tapasya? Has your tapasya increased?"; from her hands Rama accepted food and her soul ascended to heaven (Aranyakanda, 74). Nishadas are an 'uncivilized' forest-tribe who include the Chandalas among them. Shabari is the feminine of shabar, the hunter community. Manusmriti states that Nishadas are the offspring of Brahmin male and Shudra female (an obvious afterthought)--they are what we call today 'untouchable'. The shabars are designated simply as 'mlechha,' completely outside Vedic/Hindu society, yet Shabari performs perfect tapasya and goes to heaven blessed by the avatar. The story has often been offered as proof that neither birth nor gender is important in performing tapasya and going to heaven. The apparent contradiction between Rama's behaviour towards them and towards Sambuka need not puzzle anyone; the Sambuka story was clearly added later to strengthen Brahmin hegemony. My question here is why does Ramendra Nath ignore these points which are known to any ordinary Hindu? The answer became clear when I looked at his citations. He was simply quoting from another person's work rather than from the Ramayana itself. Apparently he had not bothered to read the text he is criticizing. Next Ramendra Nath speaks of a certain episode in Mahabharata. Certainly the story of Ekalavya is true. Because he was a Nishada, Drona refused to teach him. The text explicitly states that being nishada he was 'asprishya' (untouchable) and it is never allowable that he should be put on a par with the general populace. Obviously social stratification has taken place since Ramayana. When Ekalavya learnt on his own, Drona made him cut off his finger. However, Ramendra Nath places undue emphasis on the fact that Arjuna is his Khastriya student. Drona asked for this terrible sacrifice because he did not wish anyone to exceed his favourite Arjuna, who had promised to give him whatever Drona desired materially. Caste here had nothing to do with it. More importantly, Ramendra Nath ignores those portions of this epic which obviously belong to earlier stratas and which show a far more humanitarian stance. The grandmother of both Kauravas and Pandavas (of whom Arjuna is one) is only a fisherwoman. She had a liaison with a Brahmin (which did not make the latter an outcaste) and gave birth to an illegitimate son who became a sage himself and the writer of Mahabharata. If she wants to marry into a respectable wealthy family, to be a fisherwoman who ferries passengers on a boat and who has a bastard child is definitely a handicap yet today even in developed countries. Nevertheless, she marries a Kshatriya king, her sons become kings and she is never reproached because of her sexual misconduct. How could such miscegenation and its placid acceptance by the population (which includes Brahmins) have been possible unless the varnavyavastha in ancient times was very much a fluid system? We also have the story of Dharmabyadh. A Brahmin had gained power to work miracles by his penance and became arrogant because of this. When a woman seems to ignore him, he becomes enraged. But the woman demonstrates that merely by carrying out faithfully her duties as a housewife she had gained even greater power; she tells him that only a man who controls his sensual instincts, never hates another person, thinks of all human beings as his own [kin], tells the truth always, and never wanders towards unrighteousness--is acknowledged as a Brahmin by the gods. He is then sent to a meat-seller known as Dharmabyadh to learn what dharma is, as he is ignorant of it. The meat-seller says, "I follow my ancestors' livelihood; I tend to the elderly; I always speak the truth; I never show hatred for anyone; I give to charity as far as I am capable; I never speak ill of anyone; I eat the leavings of the gods, guests and servants [I eat after all these have eaten]". It is these simple things that has elevated a meat-seller above the powerful Brahmin (Vanaparva, 205-213). Yuddhistira (the son of the God of Justice) is asked what is the cause of being a Brahmin. He declares that neither birth nor learning makes a Brahmin, that only proper conduct does. Even a Brahmin learned in four Vedas cannot be considered as a Brahmin if his conduct is evil. [However it must be noted that performing proper rituals is also included in the passage as the mark of a Brahmin (Vanaparva, 312).] In another place he is asked by a serpent who a true Brahmin is. He answers, "The person in whom resides truth, charity, forgiveness, courtesy, rejection of cruelty, austerity, is a Brahmin". The serpent argues that the Vedas have given every varna their dharma or law. "Therefore truth, charity, forgiveness, non-violence, rejection of cruelty, and compassion based on Vedas is noticed even in Shudras. If even in Shudras these symptoms of Brahamandharma appear, then Shudras too can be Brahmins". Yuddhistira's answer is, "In many Shudras symptoms of Brahmin appear, and among many of the twice-born, symptoms of Shudras appear. Therefore it is not that to be born in a Shudra family makes one a Shudra or that to be born in a Brahmin family makes one a Brahmin. The persons in whom such behaviour [the qualities mentioned above] ordained by Vedas appear are Brahmins and those in whom they do not appear are Shudras" (Vanaparva, 180). From such episodes it is obvious that the ideal was a high one and low castes were honoured by society if they were virtuous. Critics would say that the reality does not often match the ideal. True. But where is the paradise on earth where there is no discrimination on the basis of class, irrespective of the law? I do not see why varnavyastha should be singled out with special virulence. It is simply that some countries have made greater progress in doing away with systems like feudalism (which was held to be reflection of cosmic hierarchy) and slavery (backed by the story of Noah and his sons) while India is starting to catch up. Ramendra Nath argues that Gita too teaches every caste to do their Dharma. Certainly if in these "enlightened" times a soldier like Arjuna would refuse to fight on the battlefield when the war has begun, the government would punish him and he would be called "deserter" and "traitor". Again Shankar is pointed out as supporting the caste-system. This is essentially true. But why does Mr. Ramendra Nath slight the entire Bhakti and Tantric traditions in both North and south India? Did not the practitioners of these traditions, many of them Brahmins themselves, try to do away with caste? In such movements, outcaste teachers and Brahmin students were common. Varkala rly station to be renamed Sivagiri rly station: Nitish Kumar Wednesday December 31 2003 10:50 IST THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Union Minister for Railways Nitish Kumar has said that the Varkala railway station will be renamed as Sivagiri railway station. He was inaugurating the valedictory function of the platinum jubilee of Sree Narayana Dharma Sanghom at Sivagiri near here on Tuesday. The Varkala railway station would be developed into a model railway station with modern amenities. The Centre was awaiting the consent of the State Government for this, he said. The Minister said that the Thiruvananthapuram-Kurla Express and Netravati Express trains would be provided stops at the railway station. He denied reports that the Ernakulam-Thiruvananthapuram Inter-City Express would be cancelled. Earlier, Meghalaya Governor M.M.Jacob inaugurated the 71st Sivagiri pilgrimage. Varkala Radhakrishnan MP delivered the keynote address at the function. V.S.Sivakumar MP, Varkala Kahar MLA and Prathapavarma Thampan MLA were among those present. Seminars, meetings and cultural programmes would be held as part of the pilgrimage. The pilgrimage would conclude on January 1. |

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM(Kerala, South India): M P Appan, noted poet and recipient of Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, teacher, social and cultural activist passed away early this morning at a private hospital here. He was 91. For the past three days, he was in the ICU of the KIMS Hospital. The body was brought to his house at M P Appan Nagar in Vazhuthacaud. He is survived by wife Sumathi Amma and children Ayyappan and Kala. The cremation would take place later in the evening. |

By Ingrid von Teslon-Dennison, President, World Service Authority The World Government of World Citizens celebrated its 43rd birthday on September 4, 1996. It was World Government Day! On September 4, 1953, in the City Hall of Ellsworth, Maine, before an audience of approximately 100 people, a new government was proclaimed by the stateless world citizen, Garry Davis. (The Ellsworth Declaration is available through the World Service Authority.) Creation of this government had been mandated by over 750,000 individuals all over the world, exercising their sovereign right to claim a new fealty called "world citizenship." These individuals had expressed their will by enrolling in the International Registry of World Citizens, founded by Davis in Paris on January 1, 1949. The new government was based on what the founder called "common world laws." These laws, Davis explained, were derived from three holistic principles: One God or Absolute Value; One World; and One Humanity. The new government was immediately endorsed by the wisdom guru, Nataraja, of Travancore, South India, the first disciple of Shri Narayana Guru, one of India's greatest sages of modern times. In his Memorandum on World Government, Nataraja Guru wrote that "the World Government came into being (in principle at least) at longitude 63' 25" west, latitude 44' 32" north, on Sept. 4, 1953. Utter necessity was its justification. Very special states of stress, both personal and global, ushered it into being when a stateless person was forced into a closed territory against his own will or consent. . . . There was no government to represent him or stand by him. The World Government had therefore to be conceived as though 'immaculately,' though neither illegitimately, disloyally, nor dishonorably." From that humble beginning, the World Government has evolved in ways already known to readers of World Citizen News. Swami Saswathikananda drowns in Periyar River KOCHI: Swami Saswathikananda, former head of the Sivagiri Mutt at Varkala in Thiruvananthapuram, drowned in the Periyar River at Aluva near here yesterday morning. He was 52. The Swami was swept away while taking bath at the Adwaitashram Ghat. He had come from the state capital to take part in the meeting of the Sree Narayana Dharma Sangh. Fire force personnel fished out the body from the river and rushed to the Aluva Government Hospital. Later the body was brought back to the ashram, where a post mortem had held. Swami's body was then taken to Varkala Sivagiri Mutt from Aluva. Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam president C K Vidyasagar and general secretary Vellappally Natesan were among those who reached the ashram on hearing the swami's death. Natesan declared holiday onTuesday for all educational institutions under the SN Trust management. Sivagiri Mutt, hallowed with the life of Kerala's saint-social reformed Sree Narayana Guru, is the spiritual head-quarters of the powerful Ezhava Community. Swami who took Sivagiri Mutt to the pinnacle of glory Swami Saswathikananda was a spiritual leader who took the Sivagiri Mutt, the main pilgrimage centre of the followers of the Sree Narayana Guru, to the pinnacle of glory at the international level. The 52-year-old Swamiji, in fact, dedicated his life for the growth of the Sivagiri Mutt and the centres connected with the life organiser, he was very amenable and sophisticated and had wielded considerable clout among his followers and others. He was at the helm of the Sree Narayana Dharma Sangham for quite a long time as its member and general secretary. He was born in 1952 at Kuthumkallumoottu, near Manacadu in Thiruvananthapuram. As a boy, Sasidharan, who had later become Swami Saswathikananda, was well versed in Upanishads and Sree Narayana literature. After his education at Varkala, Swami Saswathikananda undertook a pilgrimage and covered all the holy places, including the Himalayas, in the country. After returning from his pilgrimage, he joined the rank of sanyasins at the Sivagiri Mutt and got himself ordained to priesthood in 1977 by Swami Brahmandanda, the then head of the Sree Narayana Dharma Sangham Tust. Swami Saswathikananda's organisation skill had played a great role in making the annual pilgrimage to Sivagiri a major mela for the followers of the Guru in Kerala and elsewhere. Under his leadership, Sree Narayana literature also flourished. Swami Saswathikananda became controversial a few years ago in the wake of court litigation and consequent police action at Sivagiri in 1996 following disquiet at the Sivagiri ashram where he led one of the warring factions. Sivagiri in gloom; Mutt inmates and populace still to recover from the shock SIVAGIRI: The holy Sivagiri hills stand numbed and shocked by the untimely departure of Swami Saswathikananda. The inmates of the Mutt and the people are Varkala are struggling to come to terms with the reality of the untimely departure of this holy saint, who shone as the spiritual light of the Mutt and the populace here. Finally, they grievingly accepted the fact. Within moments, black flags came up along the National Highway from Kalambalam to Varkala, in all the roads and junctions. Vehicles with yellow and black flags grievingly announced the departure of Swami. As soon as the news spread, without anyone's call, shops started downing shutters. Varkala town and surrounding areas, which had woke up to a fresh morning was suddenly pushed to gloom. As most of the prominent sanyasis of the Mutt were in Aluva to attend the to attend the board meeting of the Dharma Sangom Trust, only a handful of them were present in the Mutt. As usual the Maha Samadhi prayer and Sharada Puja was over and the Mutt was preparing for the Guru Puja when the shocking news came. With that all the prayer activities in the Mutt came to a stand still. The Guru Puja was performed as a mere ritual. Immediately, the Mutt inmates under Swami Sudhananda started preparations at the Panjajanya auditorium for the arrival of Swamiji's body. Other ingredients necessary for the samadhi like camphor, sandal and flowers were kept ready. Condolences are pouring in to the Mutt from across the land. Minister, M V Raghavan was the first to call up. He immediately contacted the chief minister and got in touch with the Aluva Advaita Ashram. Ministers, Babu Divakaran, Kadavur Sivadasan and K M Mani also got in touch with the Mutt. By noon, the volunteers of various Sree Narayan institutions and general populace started flowing into Sivagiri. Meanwhile, by 3pm, the Dharma Sangom Trust president, Swami Swaroopananda, treasurer, Swami Parananda, board member, Swami Vidyananda came to Sivagiri from Aluva. They started early to make arrangements for keeping the body for public darsan and to decide upon the place for the samadhi. Samadhi will be at Adivaram The samadhi for Swami Sashwatheekananda is being readied at the 'adivaram' (Valley) near the Sivagiri hills, beside the samdhi of former Dharma Sangom secretary, Swami Sree Narayana Theertar. The samadhi rituals will take place between 10.35 am and 12.15 today. The samadhi place is just 50 yards away from the room where Swamiji stayed. After the news reached the Mutt, all the preparations were made under the leadership of Sivagiri Yuvagana Vedi volunteers. They went across the land announcing the news and hoisting yellow and black flags all along, and distributed the multi colour portraits of Swami. The body will be kept at the Panchajanya auditorium for public darsan. This team of youngsters was at the forefront in construct the yellow coloured mandapom and the samadhi pedam. As soon as the news spread, people from all walks of life including from the political and social spectrum started flowing into Sivagiri. Post mortem confirms death by suffocation ALUVA: The post mortem report has confirmed that Swami Saswatheekananda's end came due to drowning. The preliminary report given to the police states that the end came due to suffocation after excess inflow of water into his lungs, the rural S P, Varghese George told 'Kerala Kaumudi’. No injuries inside or outside the body that suggests any doubts about the death are visible. A small bruise was seen on one side of Swamiji's head. Police stated that this was not the reason for his death and it could have occurred accidentally. The body was taken out from the body by 9.50. Instantly, the body was lied down on the steps of the river and emergency aid was given to the body. It is assumed that the bruise might have occurred during this process. At the time of the incident, the SNDP Aluva Union president and noted surgeon, Dr. M N Soman was present at the ashram. The primary aid was undertaken under his supervision. By10.10am, Swamiji's body was brought to the hospital. By then he had passed away, the duty doctor at Aluva Hospital, Dr Anila said. Later, she conducted the post mortem. He was an encyclopedia of knowledge: Vellapalli Natesan SIVAGIRI: I just remembered the stances sung by the poet when Sree Narayan Guru became a Samadhi. The soul of the poet's sorrow over that irrecoverable loss was this: The community is orphaned. Swami Saswathikananda's departure is a big loss for us. We have to think hard about how to recover from this loss. There is no loss else who has spread Sree Narayana messages to this world like him. I cannot describe the effect of his Samadhi on my life. I was leading as life as an industrialist. I had the opportunity to view from a distance the activities of the community and Sivagiri. It was Swami Saswathikananda who brought me to the S N Trust and SNDP Yogam. He consistently encouraged me. I could read from his encouragement the message that it is the necessity of this time for me to come to the leadership of the community. He was an advisor, philosopher and guide to me. Now, I feel that I am left alone. Swami was able to give a solid support to me. When I used to encounter crisis situations constantly, I used to maintain my mental strength all due to his presence. Now, who is there to console me? The knowledge imparted by this holy saint was a big asset for the activities of the Yogam. At every stage, we used to clear our doubts from him and get his advice. Also, he took care to point out the elements that shadowed over our opinions and actions. He had the right to do that. Recently, we went to the Gulf together. He enlightened the Sree Narayana community there. Everyone would attentively listen to his thought stirring discourse. Swami Saswathikananda was one disciple of Sree Narayana Guru who was noticed globally. He never deviated from Sree Narayan visions. He always had only this in mind. He traversed across the land to spread Guru's messages and got results of that endeavour. The decisions he took along with the Yogam during the critical moments of Sivagiri were historical ones. He brought disciples to Sivagiri from across the globe. Thus, Sivagiri virtually became a religion for sanyasis across the world. All famous leaders in India have visited Sivagiri. That is because of him. It was like a hobby for some people to trap him in controversy always. But, Swami never bothered about this. Even after many controversies, he strived for the unchangeable good. I believe, through this he was able to reinforce dharma. But now, we are pained when we feel that he is no longer among us. Who is there to advise us? There is no saint who has the knowledge like him. His departure is a irreparable loss for the Ezhava community and other backward groups. The important thing about him is that anyone could approach him with their problems at any time. He was much above divisive politics. That is why, he was liked by all communities. Swami invited me to the S N Trust when I was engaged as a contracterd in Kanichukulangara. I tried to move away from his persuasion. But, he did not leave me. But, I obeyed his advice. Then, he guided me throughout in all my activities. Swami has his own strong opinions, which can't be changed by others. His views on Guru and Guru Dharma were derived out of intensive thoughts. It is because of his different viewpoints that many did not accept him. But, that never bothered him. Everyone respected his deep devotion to Guru. He was like an encyclopedia of knowledge. After I visited my places for the activities of the Yogam and interacted with many people, I realised that everyone accepts him as a true preacher of Sree Narayana visions and a true disciple of Guru. From Sasidharan to Swami Saswathikananda Swami Saswathikananda was born in an ordinary Ezhava family in Kuthumkalumoodu, Manacadu in Thiruvananthapuram in 1952. His pre-ashram name was Sasidharan. He was the eldest son of Sri. Chellapan of Pazhanchira Kayikara family. His mother, Smt, Kausalya hailed from Varkala. Sasidharan had two brothers and sisters. He came to Sivagiri in his childhood itself. His mother, Smt. Kausalya's father's eldest brother, Swami Kumarananda was a close disciple of Gurudevan. Later, he became the president of Dharma Sangam Trust. Sasidharan's took his education at Sivagiri. Along with his schooling at Sivagiri School, Sasidharan also worked as priest in the Sharada Mutt. By 15, he had mastered the Upanishads and Gurudeva literature. At that time itself, the saints of the Sivagiri Mutt noticed the spiritual qualities of this active boy. After passing out SSLC from the Sivagiri school, he was an inmate of the Sri Krishna Ashram at Purrnattukara. Sasidharan was a pet of Swami Eshwarananda, the then President of the Ashram. From there he reached the abode of Thriprayar Yogini Amma. He returned to Sivagiri by the advice of Yogini Amma. Sasidharan first passed Pre Degree course and then joined for B A at the Sivagiri S N College. During his third year, in 1972, the Bhrama Vidyalaya was started in Sivagiri. He joined the Vidyalaya in the first batch. He completed the seven-year Bhrama Vidya education under the guidance of eminent Sanskrit scholar, H M Shastrikal and language expert, Prof. E V Damodaran. He was considered as a brilliant and diligent student. This course opened the doors to the intricate world Sanskrit and the enlightened world of Gurudeva darshan. After education, for over one and a half years, he wandered around holy places in the Himalayas. After returning to Sivagiri, he was bestowed with sainthood from the president of the Dharma Sangom Trust, Swami Bhramandanda in 1977. From then on, he was known as Swami Saswathikananda. Later, he became Dharma Sangom Trust member, general secretary and then president. It was during this period he became noticed at the national level. A deep enthusiast and expert in science and all other areas, he took care to impart Guru Deva visions and teachings to the masses in the simplest form that even children can understand. A human ocean mourns the departed soul amidst prayers Swami Saswathikananda's samadhi witnessed by thousands in tearss SIVAGIRI: Bestowed with a tearful salutation, the holy, enlightened preacher of non religious spiritualism, Swami Saswathikananda yesterday became a 'samadhi' with the blessed soil of Sivagiri. He came at the age of 10 and became the adopted son of Sivagiri, grew up in a saint who reveled in the glimmering glory of enlightened sainthood. The moments were heart stirring when Sivagiri received this glorious soul, who set down in a flash of light. When restraint shed down, even the saints wept. Sivagiri grieved this untimely departure. The mild breeze spread around the fragrance of camphor. At the 'samadhi sthanam', salt and sand filled up Swami's 'samadhi'. Witnessed by thousands who filled up Sivagiri with tears, the samadhi rituals started by 11 in the morning yesterday. There was no instance in the recent memory of the new generation when Sivagiri was filled in such grief. The land of restraint was for a moment pushed into sorrow and mourning. Even Mother Nature wept occasionally with drizzles. The atmosphere was gloomy and dark. Sivagiri prepared itself to take back that saint. The samadhi for Saswathikananda Swamikal was placed beside the Maha Samadhi of former Dharma Sangom Trust secretary, Sree Narayana Theertar, a few yards away from Swami's abode. Thousands paid homage to the blessed soul of Swami Saswathikananda who left us all during a dip in the banks of Aluvapuzha at the Advaita Ashram. Swamiji's cadaver was kept at the Panchjanyam auditorium here for the public to pay their last respects. Right from dawn, thousands flowed into the auditorium to get a glimpse of this enlightened saint. The sustained inflow of the grieving polity moved through the barricades into the hall. As day broke out, Sivagiri was vitually a human ocean. Emotional scenes of grief went on for hours. People from all walks of life flowed into offer their homage. Through the long queues, thousands walked in, many crying inconsolably, some prostrating before him and touching his feet and others moving on after offering floral tributes. By 10.15, the devout, disciple of Swami, Congress leader, K Karunakaran along with daughter Padmaja, arrived to offer their last respects. When he came, the grieving crowd went out of control. The sanyasis helped him through the crowd to the podium. For a few moments, he stood there bowing grievingly before the holy saint. Then he kept a wreath, paid floral tributes and returned back. Then came opposition leader, V S Achuthanandan to offer his homage. When chief minister, A K Antony came to pay tributes, the air was filled with emotion. He stood before the saint bowing and offered a wreath and saluted the holy soul. Then, eminent personalities from a wide spectrum of political and social life, led by SNDP Yogam general secretary, Vellapalli Natesan and Speaker Vakkom Purushotaman and a host of ministers, legislators and political leaders along with 'Kerala Kaumudi' Chief Editor, M S Mani led the crowd in paying their sorrowful homage to this enlightened saint. From the time Swamiji's cadaver was kept for the public to the time when he was taken for samadhi, the sanyasis of Sivagiri recited prayers all throughout. The crowd assembled at the auditorium repeated the stances of the prayer. By 10.30, the 'deivadasakam' was recited and the body was taken to the samadhi sthanam. At the make shift podium near the samadhi sthanam, the chief ministers, his ministers and other prominent persons lined up to witness the rituals. The samadhi ceremonies were conducted under the supervision of Dharma Sangom Trust president, Swaroopananda, secretary, Sampoornanda, treasurer, Parananda and other sanyasis of the Sivagiri Mutt. Swamiji's body was wrapped in yellow coloured cloth bag and was immersed into the specially built cabin where the samadhi was rested. The samadhi rituals was completed when this cabin was filled up with camphor, vermilion, salt and sand. The first bunch of vermilion was offered by Antony, Vakkom, Vellapalli Natesan, Vidyasagar, Basheer, Krishna Kumar and M S Mani. After that, the sanyasis offered prayers by reciting devadeshakom. Even after the ceremonies, the ocean of masses stayed put at the samadhi sthanam. They offer floral tributes at the place. The samadhi ceremony will culminate with Moksha Deepam and public feast on the 11th samadhi day. Hundreds flocked at the Periyar shores chanting Deiva Dashakom ALUVA: The Aluva Advaita Ashram, which passed off a day full of grief and sorrow, saw unprecedented rush of pilgrims. Even as the samadhi rituals of Swami Saswathikananda was going on in Sivagiri, a large crowd assembled at the ashram and stood staring at the Periyar with tears. Some wept, some cried inconsolably, while some others chanted Deiva Dashakom and returned back with a heavy soul. The inmates of the ashram were immersed in the grief of Swamiji's departure. The bed-ridden madathipathi, Swami Thriratnatheerha, who had suffered injuries on his left leg while pulling out Swamiji's body from the river, was in grief. Right from day break, there was a steady inflow of pilgrims into the ashram. They got down to the steps of the river banks where Swamiji passed his last moments. They converted it into a pilgrimage by shedding their tears in this holy water where Swamiji had his Jalasamadhi. At the Gurumandiram in the ashram compound, they sat together and chanted prayers for his soul's peace. Special guru pujas were conducted. Many of them attained solace by dipping in the water which received the holy life of Swamiji. No other activity, other than the pujas took place in the ashram yesterday. The ashram school and bookstall remained closed with yellow and black flags hanging over the buildings. |

The Indian religions include Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism and all other religions which took origin in India. If you take the word in its narrow sense ( meaning only Brahminism or the vedic religion) Ezhavas are not Hindus. Only Brahmins, Kshathriyas, Aishyas, Sudras and panchamas are Hindus. Ezhavas do not belong to any one of these five groups. |

Thanks for the comments. First of all, having political ambition is not a bad thing in itself, if there is a clear objective. The problem with the recent (not just the current) leaderships of SNDP is that they are drifting without a reasonably serious and decent agenda. | Comments: | Well, MP Purushothaman is Madras based industrialist and liquer baron! Obviously he thinks God can be bought (recall late Samba Sivan's famous Kathaaprasangam - "Vilakku Vaangam"!). No wonder he wanted to come to Guruvayor to see God and to have the marriage of his daughter there. The insults bestowed upon the bridegroom has been cooly accepted and forgiven by the bride's father.
Guruvayoorappan is valued at 5 lakhs now. I think Guruforum wasted a lot of pages defending these backboneless fellows!!! As Sukumar Azhikode said then, it was just alot of 'bahalam' and nothing else. Hope these guys stop quoting Guru's and SNDP's name! |

| Comments: | The debacle at Shivagiri, everyone has to be blamed. First of all, one cannot expect the current politicians (including Antony) to be honest and to have a sense of history. Gurukulam also seems to have lost the direction and objective and seems to have moved far away from the common man, and guru's own ideals. Gurukulam was a place of learning (real Gurukulam) to start with. But later stages it became an abode of 'sanyasins' who have nothing to do with the common man's causes (Common Man in Kerala) in this world or the world beyond us. If I recall right the Gurukulam in Bangalore suburbs (John Spears was here) had enormous property (donated by the Maharajah of Mysore where Dr Palpu was the palace physician) which was mostly occupied and stolen by some vested interests in recent years. Is SNDP and Kerala People aware of this? Can someone elaborate on this? |

The Guru Who Fought For Human Dignity M P K KUTTY DO you shun a person because he belongs to another caste or faith? Do you discriminate between people on the basis of race, ideology or nationality? Do you judge others on the basis of their gender, age, status, colour or possessions? What if others discriminate against you on any of these grounds? You feel hurt. You feel pained. It is unjust as well. Of all such discriminations, caste distinctions based on birth constitute the gravest assault on human dignity. Many in the past have raised their voice of protest against this evil. Today the country, particularly Kerala, pays homage to Narayana Guru, who lived during late 19th and early 20th centuries. A social reformer, born of a low caste, he taught people the oneness of the whole human race. Born into the Ezhava caste, he lived at a time when casteism with its attendant practice of untouchability pervaded society. Those days an Ezhava could not get closer than 64 feet to a Nair who was considered superior to an Ezhava in the caste hierarchy. The Ezhava in turn, would resent it if any Pulaya or Pariah -- still lower down in the hierarchy -- got closer than 100 feet to him. No wonder India witnessed so many reform movements against the caste system. Sri Narayana Guru, educated in Sanskrit and the Vedas, not only preached against the caste system but set up the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP) to propagate his ideals. Promotion of education among the downtrodden and reformation of religious practices and customs were high on his agenda. In his great endeavour to uplift the downtrodden and give them respectability in society, he had to face severe personal and institutional resistance. His doctrine, "One caste, one religion and one God for men" is justly famous. But the stress on "one religion" did not mean that he questioned the validity of religions other than his own. His effort was to show that all religions had the same goal and enshrined almost similar values allowing no discrimination between one person and another. Whichever be the religion, it suffices if it makes one a better person, he held. Nationalism and racism based on cultural, linguistic and racially identified groupings, compete closely with religion in separating one person from another. In defence of "imaginary lines" or borders and in attempts to expand their territories, we trundle out our war machines and fill the beautiful earth with violence and blood. It is the most wasteful expenditure of earth's resources and its end, self-inflicted suffering, he concluded. Along with Tolstoy and other visionaries, Narayana Guru too held that this planet of ours is rich and generous and if loved and cared for, is well able to provide for all its beings. Only greed, fear and ignorance cause us to separate ourselves on the basis of quite superficial differences. They compete and kill instead of letting us joyfully share the gifts and bounty of this beautiful planet. It is, however, doubtful if the long campaign by the guru or others like Mahatma Gandhi and Ambedkar have eliminated the scourge of caste from the Indian mind. All of them have become idols to whom society pays lip service. Politics of power, elections and elevation of people to positions of prestige and honour in society still hinge upon caste. It is still one of the biggest stumbling blocks in the path of progress and national unity. The recent debate, making a distinction between casteism and racism, on the eve of the Durban meet on racism only revealed our lackadaisical attitude and our tendency to gloss over this evil. The founding fathers of America affirmed the equality of man as a basic principle of existence ordained by God. Their "Declaration of Independence" stated as much: "We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness..." We need that spirit and vision today. Narayana Guru, by his life and example, spoke for the oppressed. He worked for an egalitarian social order. Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore who met him in Kerala expressed their admiration for his work. They, too, had laboured to drive home the truth of the equality of man. Until we learn to accept and honour one another without considerations of caste, creed or colour, we must consider their labour as incomplete. |

Any definition of religion must include the common features of existing religions. One such definition is " the body of persons adhering to a particular set of beliefs and practices". According to Narayanaguru, Hinduism is the common name given to eleven different religions- Vedic religion, Puranic religion, Sankhya religion, Vaiseshika religion, Meemamsa religion, Saktheya religion, Advaitha religion, Dvaitha religion, Visishta advaitha religion, Vaishnava religion and Saiva religion. The constitution of India has included Buddhism , Jainism and Sikhism in Hinduism. |

| Comments: | It was interesting to read the comments about Gurukulam. I recall Prof KP Urumese's (Head of Dept of Sanskrit and Malayalam, St Thomas College Trichur,1973) recollection on his student days at Gurukulam. Urumese learned Sanskrit at Gurukulam went on to become a Sanskrit scholar and had most of the scriptures by heart, which he quoted freely in the class room. During his time at Gurukulam there were 'high-caste' and Christian students besides ezhavas. For lunch 'high-caste' students did not take the food from Gurukulam (though they wished!). But being a Christian, Urumese had no such taboos and enjoyed the free food alongwith the Ezhava students! |

Thanks for bringing up this issue. Shivagiri issue is a very complex one, made further muddy by the interference of political parties and vested interests. Guru indeed did not belong to any organized religion and Guru's vision was far beyond any community or religion. On the other hand, because of existing social structure during His time, Guru did indeed call for the uplifting of the downtrodden communities within the 'religion' we all call Hinduism. Guruforum adopts a special stand for Shivagiri. Even without the current (last 5 years) conflicts, we believe that Gurukulam departed from Narayana Guru's original vision and objectives. Guru never wanted 'passive sanyasis'. Guru's vision was undoubtedly a place of learning (which indeed it was to start with. Gurukulam departed from the common man and his problems. And even great names like Nataraja Guru and Yati were more of a high-brow and appealing to only higher echelons of society (by way of education and wealth). We very much doubt whether this ever was Narayana Guru's intention! Besides Shivagiri what is the state of other important Gurukulams in Ooty, Bangalore etc? We do not have enough material and knowledge at the moment to comment further on this ... may be at a later time.
