My father, David Pasternak, was born in Storojinet - went to St. Louis in 1914 with his mother, Clara Bitter Pasternak. Dad was 2 years old when he arrived in USA. His father Herschel & brother Max were already in US - we never kept in touch with Max or Max'x family & think they might have stayed in the New York area.

My grandparents were from Storojinet and towns around there. Zadova. The names were Wallach and Schachter or Schacher. My grandfather Feivel Wallach and his wife Minnie (Mendel) Schachter/Schacher came to N.Y. around 1903-1905. Feivel's father was maybe Schmule and he had a few brothers. Kune, Samuel and I think one sister maybe Dora. Feivel and Minnie had a large family in N.Y. and went back to visit 1911 or so. Minnie died around 1920 and Feivel left the children in an hebrew orphanage and went back to Storojinet to get a new wife. He didn't come back to N.Y. and contacted the children in 1939 to ask for help. They tried to contact him but were unable to and he was never heard from again. I think he worked in the garment industry. Any information about the family would be appreciated.

Carp's report of the Jews in Transnistria is an important document. it mesmerized me .Couldn't stop reading it......... It taught me about this devastating and sad chapter in Jewish History, facts that my late parents, survivors of Transnistria, refused to share with us.
I felt compelled to learn about the shoa of the jews in Transnistria and willing to visit the places where so many of my relatives were killed brutally. I plan to go there with my children and grand children so that they will be able to pass on the Heritage of our lost ancestors, so that their memory will live on with us forever. | |

Hello , my name is Vlad Mitric , i'm 26 years of age. My father was born in Storojinetz in january 1943 and fled bukowina to Romania in 1944 with his sister( my aunt) and his parents ( FATHER : ARCADIE MITRIC and MOTHER : ELISABETA MITRIC - born KOSTASUK) . My grandfather ( born in 1901) died in 1950 when my father and my aunt were little children and becouse of that there are little memorys about my grandfather , my grandmother died in 1989 but becouse of the regime in romania ( comunism ) she told almost nothing to her children ( my father and my aunt ) about bukovina and storojinet.
I'm trying to find more information about them , the only thing i know is that they had a general store (BACANIE) and some land , and that my grandfather was an emploee at the Mayor's office in Storojinetz. I also have a document found in my grandmother posessions after her death in 1989 about my grandfather helping some jewish people with money , papers and food to flee storojinet around 1942 Looking forward to any information and contact , and if anyoane needs a contact in bucarest romania , i'll be glad to help | |

What a wonderful resource! This site is a source of reflection and connection. My maternal grandmother and her family migrated to the United States from Storojinet in 1910. The family name was Hutterer. According to my grandmother Rose Lax (nee Hutterer), the family moved to Storojinet from Kuty. My great grandfather Jacob Hutterer was in the lumber business and had a saw mill and land around Kuty. When my great aunt fell in love with the "wrong man," the family sent her to the United States to "get over" him. Though she was supposed to return, she didn't, so the family sold the business and went to New York. My paternal grandfather Avram was from Storojinet. He came to the US in the late 1800's. Before his death, he told me that "Rothberg" was a named assigned upon his arrival in the US, but I do not know what our original family name was. I know his wife's name was Clara (Chaya) Neuman and his father's name may have been Eli Nathan.
Has anyone been successful at finding vital records? Are they kept in Storojinet or Chernowitz? Both my grandfather and father have now passed away and this important family information is lost to us. As I am now getting older (60), it is very important to learn about my family history so that I may pass it on to my children and grandchildren. HE LEGACY OF THE KURZ FAMIY
My grandfather Kurz Meier (Leib) was born in visnich 1906, His mother's name was feige , and his father's name was moishe(mo'zes). Meier had twelve brothers and sisters . As far as I know one sister named Papy survived the holocaust and came to Israel . ( During the 70's we lost touch). My grandfather had marrid klara haia to the house of Klinger of strozinich born in 1907 , her mother was called Shprina to the house of zomer , her father moishe owned a little farm on the river bank .She had tow more brothers , Jacob and Zvi Hersh who was murdered in the Holocaust ,even though he had the permit to stay in strozinich and maintain his job as a blacksmith he chose to be together with his family , he was shot to death along the side way . My father Moishe (Mo'zes) was born in the year 1940 , they used to live in Noywalld st. in Strozinich . My grandfather worked as a baker , and grandmother sold milk proclucts in the city of chernovich . During the war they were sent to Breshed Transiteria and there they were forced to do hard labor in a Concentration Camp . After the war they came back to Strozinich and from there they went to Bucharest there they had met again following immigration in an illegal immigrantship called: "Pen York and pen Kresent", they had been arrested in the island of Cyprus by the British army , and finally they had reached their final destination Haifa , Israel in 1948 . Meier continued his work as a baker in " Ahdoot Bakery " in Haifa . Meier Kurz died at 1975 at the age of 69 , Klara (Klinger) kurz diseased in 1992 at the age of 85 . My mother name is Grete, and her parents were called Ziamu Lagstein and Regina Zaidman. The Lagsteins were related to Zaidman, Blond, Kurtsman and Shtiglitz families. My father was born in Storojinetz in 1938 and his family had been in that town for generations.The birth name of my father was Deutsch and his mother was a Sonnenshein. They were transported to Transnistria (Budi) in 1941 where both my father, grandmother, his aunt, uncle, and cousin survived over the next few years. I have in my possession many photos and documents that belonged to my grandfather, Serezin Herschdorfer, born Aug 1, 1901 in Sambor, Poland. I have learned that his father, Lazar Herschdorfer,was employed at the Juridical cadastre since 1905 in Storojinet.
My grandfather attended primary and secondary school in Storojinet. He became a Romanian citizen when Bucovina was occupied by Romania. He married Elisabeth Mayer, who was also from Storojinet. Elisabeth was the daughter of L. Mayer, who was the chief of the technical Cadastre at Storojinet. Elisabeth Mayer was born in Suceava, Bucovina on Nov 19, 1904. My father, their oldest son, Cornelius George Herschdorfer, born April 23, 1931 in Campina, Romania, was fortunate to leave Romania with his father, mother and sister in 1939. Prior to my father's death in 1997, he received communication from Dan Arad, in Isreal, whose relatives were also Herschdorfers. I have been told that my father's grandparents and other relatives became victims of the holocaust but I have no further information. My mother Bertha Walzer and all her family were from Ciudin which I presume was near to Storojinet, because my late mother always spoke about it. She married my father Ichil Schwartz in Botosani, Romania where we lived until after the war. But my grandfather and aunt Hedy Schachter were murdered by the Romanians in Ciudin while my uncle Moritz Schachter survived Transnistria. | |

Efrosina Michaelina Miron was born in 1899 in Storozhinets. She worked in one of the garment factories in Storozhinets as a young girl. At the end of WWI she was sent to live with a Jewish family in Winnipeg Canada until it was safe to return. To my knowledge she never had any further contact with her family.

My deepest regrets to those who have suffered and endured their extreme losses of family members. I never knew much about the Holocaust but now that I do, I wish I hadn't read the book titled "no one awaiting me" by Joil Alpern because my heart broke as I read on and on. What a beautiful site! Although I only know of one relative by marriage who was from Storojinet, I thoroughly enjoyed the site. My uncle Max had moved to the US in the early 1900's, but he had a few siblings who survived the war and went to Israel, including Feivel Rosenberg who moved to Haifa. Feivel's children Arye Rosenberg and Rina(?)Rosenberg Alboim moved to Jerusalem many years ago and lived in Ramot Eshkol. I have a vague recollection of the daughter's name being Rina, and I think her husband was Yossi. You may want to track them down. | |
