Married Mabel Lacey (also from England), had 3 sons: Robert, Arthur and Richard. I don't know any connections beyond that.

Comments: I've stumbled on the comments section of the Hobday website, but can't find or access the main site. Can anyone help me out?

I live in Edina, MN. My Grandfather was John Hobday (Jack)from Le Sueur, MN; my father is John Hobday (Jack) from Shakopee, MN; I am John; and my son is John Andrew Hobday (Andy). Interestingly, I ran into another John Hobday from Berkley Springs, WV a few years back. His father and grandfather were also John Hobdays. I have been to visit him and his father twice over the past few years. I've also had contact with a John Hobday in Sandpoint, ID, as well as a John Hobday somewhere in England who had two kids (same as me) and was a computer programmer using one of the same development languages as I use--ironic to say the least.

I'm sure there are more John Hobdays out there. Would love to hear from you or any of the other Hobday cousins.

Comments: MESSAGE FOR CJ MCKENDRICK

CJ, regarding your inquiry about William Alfred Hobday, M.D., author of the book ACCESSORY AFTER THE FACT, I have tried to contact you at the e-mail address you left below, mckendrick@adlephia.net with no success.

William Alfred Hobday, (1850-1918), was a brother of my grandfather, Edward James Hobday, M.D. William was the eldest child of Alfred Hobday (1824-1884), a Lithographer, of London, England, and Eliza Carville. Eliza's father, James William Carville was a doctor as well. William emigrated to the US in the 1870s to study medicine at the University of Buffalo. He graduated in 1881. My grandfather followed in his footsteps, attending the same medical school, graduating in 1885. William and my grandfather practised medicine in Chicago for a time in the 1880s. In 1889, William was in Minneapolis, and in 1891 he was married and living in Hurley, Wisconsin. William married a Hobday woman, no relation, from Augusta, KY, Anna Hobday. In 1907, William and family were living in St. Mathew's, Kentucky. In 1910, William was in Goldfield, Nevada, where I assume he wrote ACCESSORY AFTER THE FACT. In about 1917, William was an invalid, in a wheelchair, but still practising medicine in Palms, California. He died in 1918, along with the thousands of others, in the Great Flu Epidemic. He was buried in Grave A, Lot 107, Blk2, Woodlawn Cemetery, Santa Monica, CA. I recently found a descendant of his Virginia Carville Jauregui, vcarville@yahoo.com. My family history files with more information are at http://worldconnect/genealogy.rootsweb.com, database 1844_a Also, jpegs and bio of William's grandfather, William Armfield Hobday, a portrait painter, can be found at www.genealogy.com/genealogy/users/h/o/b Just scroll down to my name, Roger A. Hobday, and click.

All the best

Comments: My mother who recently passed away was a Hobday from Le Center, MN USA, daughter of Nick and Dorothy (Guertin). Although I do have cousins who still reside in Le Center, they do not have the Hobday name and I believe that it has died out there despite Nick coming from the family of 11 (only the youngest of that family still survives in Minneapolis at the age of 98). The descendants have all moved elsewhere, mostly in Minnesota.

Comments: Hello,
I would like to say to all the Hobdays looking for their relations in Norfolk that they are quite "far of". Alot of us live in Africa and Australia. We are decendants all of us from a very rich and prosperous family. Some of who moved to foreighn countries through the decades. We are a family full of Lawyers and ecspecially Doctors and vets. I would like to grant a well done to all those curios about their origins and who took action. You have done well and I am sure you are or will be successful in your life as a Hobday. Once again well done for showing some want for knowledge that could help you to understand one another.
excuse any spelling mistakes I have never really grasped english grammer.
Kind regards
J.Hobday
P.S.
The e-mail address is a relations so if for one or another reason you write I may take up to a day to reply for it is not very easy to "get hold" of my emails.

Comments: I have a new email address so thought I should sign in again. My family came from the Oakland (near berkeley springs) West Virginia area of the US. The earliest Hobday I have been able to trace is William Hobday who was born about 1790 in that area. I have traced his daughter in law's (mrs. William Hobday Jr. ) family back to Governor William Stone of Maryland in 1649, and his father in law Thomas Graves of Jamestown.
My great grandfather Henry Hobday emigrated from West Va. in about 1872 to St. Josephs Mo. where I believe he died about 1876. My grandfather Duris (should have been spelled Darius as was the name given to him by his father) H. Hobday wound up as a Miner near Salt Lake City and later in Eureka Nevada. There he married Dorothy Roberts Tregonning. He was eventually sent to Copperopolis California about 1910. I currently live at Donner Lake in Truckee California, and am retired from the University of California Davis. My wife is Pamela, and I have a daughter Heather Griffin who has twin sons - Tyler and Austin.

Comments: Hello:

Here is bio of my gr gr grandfather William Armfield Hobday that may be of interest:

Memoir of William Armfield Hobday, Esq.

William Armfield Hobday, the eldest of four sons [Not true, second eldest], was born at Birmingham in the year 1771, where his father [Samuel Hobday (1746-1816), Engraver and spoon maker] carried on the trade of a Birmingham-ware-man, and realized considerable property [fortune about three million pounds in modern terms]. He early displayed a talent for drawing, which was encouraged by his being sent up to London, when yet in very boyhood [1786], to be placed under William [Joseph] Barney the Engraver, with whom he continued six years, during which period he incessantly coiled for his master in engraving and drawing, much to his disinclination, as it afforded him no opportunity for any time to himself, being ardently desirous in handling the brush rather than graver; and such was his enthusiasm, that we have heard him state he used to purchase secretly candles and wood, and set up to work after all the family had retired. This luxury, however, he was soon obliged to forgo, as his master discovered it; upon which a disagreement ensued, and a friend of his fathers immediately took him away before the expiration of this time, as Barney had broken articles of agreement, which were, that he was to teach Hobday drawing and painting. While in his apprenticeship, he became a student of the royal Academy and the manner in which he went about it is curious. Full of youthful enthusiasm, and conceit of mind, he took with him a small portfolio of drawings, and boldly knocked at Academy door, and Carlini, the then keeper, who informed the youth that he must first make a drawing from some work in Academy; which he did, by taking the `Discobolus,' upon which he immediately obtained his students’ ticket: in his profession of drawing outlines for engraving having given him great facility in handling the crayon, and knowledge of the human figure it greatly facilitated his progress; so that in three months from his entrance he became entitled to be admitted to the life Academy, where he studied laboriously. Biography should act as a beacon in our path through the passage of life; and the career and final close of Hobday should teach a lesson to all, but more especially to youthful artists just commencing the great business of life. It is well known that the attendant circumstances of genius, with few exceptions, are obscurity and poverty, which impels them onto achievement of great works. After leaving Barney, Hobday at once commenced portrait-painter in water-colors in small and miniatures, in Charles Street, Middlesex hospital; and besides the income derived from his father, a large and superior class of persons supported the dawn of his career. He thus lived amidst all that was brilliant and fascinating in society. Young, handsome, and engaging, his painting became more of an amusement than a study, and he passed his time in a whirl of fashion and revelry. He then felt not what is to experience the bitter pinchings of want, nor to look with heart-sickening oppression to the support of the morrow. As every day he entered more into the meshes of life, so was his enthusiasm for art been constantly diminished. At this time to, while in the heyday of youth, when passions rule supreme, and reason but quietly succumbs to the dictates of caprice and temptation--he married! [His bride was Elizabeth Dorothy Ivory] There is not one truth more pre-eminent among the golden maxims of Sir Joshua Reynolds than when he said, and artist is ruined if he marries. By this fact Hobday laid the foundation of vexation and turmoil for hereafter, which, as a Millstone around him. However, he was not so regardless of his art; he had not yet so completely cast off all feeling for it, as not still to continue his studies at the Academy; but then he never completed any of them. Among the few now surviving who were his contemporaries as students at the Academy, is the present president, whose career has been one of undeviating success and elevation, by reason of his steady adherents to his art, from which no allurement but the polished and elegant pursuit of literature has withdrawn him. From the period of his [Hobday's] commencing portrait-painter to the time of his departure from Bristol, --on reference to the early catalogs of the Royal Academy, we find that Hobday numbered among his patrons of powerful phalanx of the nobility and higher classes of Gentry. For Lord Howard J. Walden, an intimate friend of George III, he painted many pictures and portraits. Lady Wilson, of Charlton, in Kent, was another firm and most liberal friend. Indeed, such high connection, and the really not ingenious-like paintings of this time, held out that promise to his friends, that it was not too much for them to expect they should one-day behold him bearing proudly the honors of the Academy. During this time, he started as candidate for the gold medal, the subject given then being ' Coriolanus'. Shee also was a competitor; and Hobday's talents being greatly in repute, particularly as a draughtsman, the students were naturally full of anxiety for the result. He worked hard at it, gave it all the study and power of which he was capable, and his friends felt certain that he would be successful. A short time before the day for trial, his fellow student Shee called upon him to ask if he positively intended to send his picture; but if so, he should withdraw his own. Hobday replied in the affirmative, and other gave up the contest. Unfortunately, just act this time Hobday received a letter from Birmingham, stating that his father being dangerously ill, his immediate attendance was requested at home. Off he posted: -his father recovered; but the day was passed; the prizes were given, and Sir Martin Archer Shee obtained the gold medal. He [Hobday] often expressed his regret at this circumstance, as having a most powerful influence on his after pursuits, as throwing a complete damper on all future efforts in that line, and he then sunk into a mere portrait-painter. Of the picture, it certainly showed considerable powers of composition, good drawing, and moderate pretensions to color. It represented Coriolanus seated under a tent, surrounded by his guards, with powerful expression of action and features, and his wife and family in mourning advancing, and he stretching out his arm to check their approach; the action of the hand was faulty, being perpendicularly raised, and stiff and theatrical, instead of an horizontal position; the thumb expanded to its utmost width, in opposition to the fore finger* The impetus which the genius of Reynolds gave to the fine arts is vividly apparent in the habits and customs of society, and altered style of painting adopted among artists,--though many without genius caught the superficial splendor of his greatness; yet this was more tolerable then the deformities of Hudson, and everything then it was a-la-Reynolds, as it now is a a-la-Lawrence. Those who possessed talent at all, certainly, by imbibing the style and general character of Reynolds, inspired a charm into their works, which otherwise would not have yawning abyss. Upon that Hoppner based the superstructure of his style, and his genius was strong enough to preserve him clear of mannerisms. The manner of Hobday at this time was spirited, well drawn, and generally pleasing; but it would not bear examination; he wanted the easy grace of nature, an eye for colors; while he preserve the resemblance, the character of the individual was not marked; it lacked elevation of feeling which is the poetry of art. his small portraits in water-colors, and miniatures, were tastefully composed and delicately painted; these certainly are far preferable to his paintings in oil. It was his practice in watercolors to make out at first the features in blue with repetition of small lines, like miniature painting, afterwards heightened with carmine and light red. *(this picture, among many others, was sold for a mere trifle, at the sale of his works and effects, a short time previous to his death. A Mr. C., a gentleman whom Mr. Hobday painted, mentioned to him that his daughter was very fond of painting, and so learned was she in connoisseurship, that she could at first sight tell the works of every particular master. Mr. Hobday, like Lawrence, was quite a Lady's man, requested to see the young lady; she came, and on looking about his painting-room fixed her eye is on this picture of Coriolanus-- "Ah! There's a beautiful Ruebens!" exclaimed she. And then turning to a portrait in an antique dress, by Hobday, "that's a Vandyke." Whether perfectly astounded at her ignorance, or from a feeling of reverence to the sex, he made no reply; and the young lady left him with increased stock of vanity, and the father a thousand times more delighted at the thoughts of his daughter's great perception and discrimination.) Soon after his marriage he left Charles Street, and removed to No. 9, Holles Street, Cavendish Square, where he commenced a style of living which even his liberal supplies from his father, and the no less large income derived from his paintings, could not support without difficulty. Still, however, he was not a man who would ever retrograde, even if he saw before him unfathomable young at this of misery and destruction--thus deeper and deeper encumbrances thickened around him; still "forward!" Was his cry to the moment of his death. He furnished his houses on a most splendid scale, with every species of costly cabinet work, and servants in liveries ushered in his visitors and patrons, with all the obsequiousness of fashionable life. Amidst all this concentration of folly and lavishness, a letter put him terribly in consternation, containing a notification from his father, that he intended to pay him a visit in London. The old man, having continually advanced in large sums of money, felt anxious to know how it all went, and his son became no less anxious to devise some means of concealing all the symptoms and appearance of imprudence and high life. One out of the many extravagant things which he had, were a set of chairs and settees, of figured damask seats, silver and gold pattern, with the cabinet work of French white and burnished gilding! These he had immediately covered with flannel, thinking that his father would not be curious enough to look beyond the surface of things. The father came, and was astonished at the magnificent of the place, at the same time expressing his regret at his lavishness; he remarked the coverings of the chairs and settees, took one off, and their costliness staggered his senses, exceeding anything he could imagine; he himself being a plain, homely, country trades man. He then informed his son that he would supply him with means so far only as his share in extended, no more; the rest must be reserved for the other part of the family; which resolution his father kept: and at his death [Samuel's] Hobday's claim was small, having previously much drawn on his share [this statement is not accurate. Other members of the family also drew large advances on their inheritance is, usually for business reasons. Williams brother, Edward, in fact, drew much more in advance than William did. This statement also implies that there was a "falling out" between William and his father, which continued until his father's death. This also is untrue. William continued to visit his father and the family every two years, as was his habit, and in the course of that time painted many family portraits. He was, in fact, quite proud of his father and of his father's accomplishments and respected him very much.] nothing shows more the thoughtlessness of his life, the utter absence of all mind and prudential feeling, than his wild projects after this rencontre with his parent. He ordered extensive alterations to be made, built a superb gallery and painting room, and seemed determined to outdo his brother-artists. It had been his custom to take an annual trip to Bath and Bristol; in this year (1804) he did not for go with his usual journey. It was the height of the war; and when at Bristol he met with so much business, in painting portraits of officers, (for their friends, both in oil and miniature,) embarking for the seated war, and miniatures of parents and others for the officers, that, notwithstanding the alterations and improvements which had been made in his house in Holles Street, at a vast expense, he determined at once to settle at Bristol: consequently he sold his house in town at an immense loss, and entirely gave up his connections, and finally left Bristol , wherefore about 14 years, he resided, prosperous and his profession, but still as thoughtless and extravagant as ever. Upon an average, during the very successful seasons, he generally had six sitters a day, an hour to each; and his price was three-quarters twenty guineas, and for a miniature ten guineas. It may naturally be expected that a man so fortunate would have realized an ample fortune, sufficient at least for the maintenance of a gentleman in comfort and respectability; but no, still he was clogged with difficulties. The year 1817, when he again took up his abode in London found him all but a beggar in fortune, and mannerist in his art. An ingus fatuus seems to a have fastened itself upon him, and dragged its willing victim into every path and intricacy of difficulties and blindness. What can more show it than his conduct now? Unmindful of his former Follies, he once again launched out into the same extremes at this time, by taking Winchester house, Broad Street, city. He had left Bristol, because of decline of business, the war being an end, and thought to improve his fortune in his fame by the in residing in London. But he found that 14 years of absence was an estrangement which lost him his recognition in the Academy, and his reputation in London society. At Winchester house he continued to reside till the year 1822, when he sent out circulars, stating his intention of removing to 54, Pall Mall, premises then held by Mr. Porter the auctioneer. Here he resided till 1829, when his bankruptcy took place. In 1826 he was in

Comments:MESSAGE FOR CJ MCKENDRICK
