"No, Papa please!" She pleaded and tugged on his vest. He opened
the door and took a brown leather strap off the hook. Tears came to her eyes.
This was not supposed to happen! "Papa... You have to listen to me!"

The Doctor ignored his daughter, closed the door and continued
toward the study towing her by the hand. He was feeling more in control
knowing he had his daughter's attention.

"Papaa!" Mary pleaded. There was no answer, and a broken sob
escaped her. Something was wrong with her father! They had an agreement!
His story about always listening to her and never getting angry! The story
about Abraham Lincoln and how he always listened to his children and
explained things to them even when he was in meetings with important
people, they could always talk to their father! Her mama and him had always
used that story and listened to her when she had something to say. What she
wanted and needed the most was her father to listen to her and her Mama to
help her! Mary looked behind her, hoping for Gina's help. She saw her
standing by the kitchen counter wringing her hands on her apron and
worriedly watching them both. Mary anxiously looked to the portrait of
Lincoln hanging on the wall in front of her. As she came closer to it, itseemed as though Lincoln was staring back at her with sorrow.

The Doctor could not listen to his daughter. He must have her obey
him at all times willingly or unwillingly, and he was going to make certain
she did. He couldn't tell her what Black Coat Rudi threatened him with; she
wouldn't understand. She was putting her own life in danger by what she
said and with her conduct in school. One thing he knew for sure, Black Coat
Rudi's punishment would be far worse than any punishment he may possibly
give her. The Doctor sat down in his chair.

Mary stood in front of her father, her mind tormented with the
situation she was in. Nervously, she put her hands behind her and tried
holding back her tears. Looking up briefly, she saw Gina in the kitchen still
wringing her hands on her apron and wished she were standing next to her.
Mary nervously eyed the leather strap in her father's hand and wiped away
tears that were falling down her cheeks.

Her father's tone of voice was harsh. "This behavior you have shown
me in school and in this house will stop this second. You will listen to me
and mind me, and if I hear one more outburst you'll be over my knee for a
good dose of this strap. Am I making myself clear?"

Mary's face turned red in embarrassment knowing Gina was listening
from the kitchen, and she reluctantly nodded.

"You were disobedient in school today and tomorrow morning, you
will give the teacher your assignment and apologize to her for your behavior.
Do you understand me?

The Doctor waited for her answer. Mary wiped away more tears and
cleared her throat, then lied nervously, "Yes Papa. I understand you." She
felt sick to her stomach from her lie. She was not going to turn in that
assignment or apologize to anyone. She knew she was right. Her father lied
in school saying she was ill and the teacher lied about it too, so she would
lie.

The Doctor relaxed a little. His daughter was finally listening to him.
"We all agreed not to do anything to draw attention to ourselves. You have
gone against that agreement today and you will not break our agreement
again. Freedom and its ideas are not survival in this country and you will
never speak of it or write about it again until I give you permission to do so
and that is final. I will not discuss this any further with you, and don't ask
me to." The Doctor stood from his chair and pointed to the stairway. "Now
go to your room."

Mary's heart sunk in her chest from her father's words and she sobbed
in despair. He wasn't listening to anything she had to say, and her heart was
broken. She took one step towards the stairway, turned back towards him
and sobbed, "I won't do it! I just can't promise you what you want... I will
not write these things the teacher wants me to, not for you, or her. It's
against what I know is right... You taught me all of what I know... it's part of
me and how I think. Hitler is telling us lies. Don't you know that? I can't
stop knowing what I know, can I?"

The Doctor opened his mouth in shock and gasped. He became
terrified and angrier. This was exactly what he could not have her say or do
any longer. She had to obey him no matter what. He growled, "Within
seconds, you stand right in front of me and disobey me and now you tell me
you will disobey me in the future putting us all in more danger?...I am done
talking." The Doctor sat down on the edge of his chair and readied the strap
at his side. He pointed to his knee. "Come here or I will bring you here!"

Mary gasped and backed away from him. Her stomach ached and her
heart pounded in her chest. She did nothing wrong; but he did. Her own
father had betrayed her after she had trusted him. He had broken his promise
to listen to her. Every emotion she had was gone except one, and she felt her
face turn red in anger as hate welled up in her, and it was greater than she
had ever felt towards him in her life.

Mary glared into her father's eyes in defiance. He was waiting. She
wiped away her tears. He had betrayed her and shattered her belief in him,
and the pain was razor-sharp. Holding back more tears, she continued to glare at him then put her shoulders back and stepped forward boldly. Her
father's blue eyes were locked onto hers as she stepped to his side and
stopped. She saw his eyes narrow. He was waiting for her to obey him. To
make him wrong, she set her jaw tight, intentionally broke eye contact with
him, and willingly leaned over his lap.

Gina's heart felt heavy when she saw Mary's defiance towards her
father and watched as she leaned over his lap. Knowing what was coming
next; she turned around and faced the kitchen counter. She felt helpless.
Gina heard the Doctor's harsh low voice. "You will mind me, and you will
do as I say. Do you understand me?"

The house remained quiet except for the clock ticking the seconds
away and Mary choking back her tears. Mary didn't answer and Gina knew
she wouldn't. Her shoulders sagged while she tried to hold back her own
tears when the sound of the leather strap and Mary's sobs broke the silence.
She understood why Mary needed to obey. She had to. They could all be
sent to a concentration camp if she didn't.

Mary ran up the stairs and screamed through tears, "I hate you Papa!
And I never want to see you again!" She slammed her door in rage, opened
it, and slammed it again. Tearing the sheets and blankets off her bed, she
threw them across the room while screaming obscenities in every language
she knew towards her father. The framed photograph of her mother on her
dresser caught her attention. She picked it up and hesitated, then threw it
against the wall. Glass shattered, and Mary was stunned into silence. She
looked behind her. She knew her mother would have been up the stairs and
in her room right now with her wooden spoon scolding her in English. Her
mother warned her more than once about throwing things in the house,
shouting, and slamming doors in anger. Mary knew she would not have
tolerated her behavior for one second.

Mary looked at the shattered remains of the photograph on the floor
and fresh tears poured down her cheeks from the loss of her mother. She
wished her mother would somehow appear in the room so everything could
go back to how it was. No one would listen to her, and everyone was wrong.
She knelt down on the floor and gently picked up the remains of the
photograph. She held it close to her chest as she lay on her bed and cried into her pillow from loneliness, anger, and shame. She knew she was right and
she was not about to turn in that assignment or apologize to anyone. She had
lied to her father and didn't care. It was all his fault and she hated him for
refusing to listen to her and punishing her.
