| Comments: | I just saw the Hanneford Circus in a documentary about flea markets. Now I realize that the elephants were being displayed to advantage, and a lot of people believe it's not a circus unless there's an elephant or two, but even if you do not beat them or anything, it puts a huge amount of stress on an elephant to make them perform like this. It's really disgraceful. At best you should only keep an elephant for a year or two. Don't make them perform, just have them walk in the parade. And then you should retire them to The Elephant Sanctuary. |

After PETA filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) about severely underweight elephants traveling with the Hanneford Family Circus, inspectors found that Liz, a 36-year-old Asian elephant, is so thin that her ribs, pelvis, and spine are protruding. Liz also has deformities of one front leg and one back leg that make walking difficult. Although it appears that Liz may not be performing at the moment, Hanneford still hauls this ailing elephant from venue to venue, and witnesses have seen her chained by two legs, unable to take a single step in any direction.
I really hope you stop this. In my view this is animal cruelty. |

| Comments: | I have just seen a photo of one of the elephants you own, her name is Liz. I was appalled at the condition of this wonderful creature. It is plain to see she is malnurished. Please consider relinquseing her to an animal sanctury where she can live out her life with proper food and medical care.
It is reported that you are under investigation for animal cruelty and neglect. If you can not afford to take care of these animals than maybe you need to not have so many and that would cut back on expenses. Just please give up Liz to a better life. I am encourging through every means possible, everyone to boycott your circus performances until you can treat your animals with the kindness they so deserve. |

These beautiful creatures should not be shlepped around in a circus and it's clear that this particular elephant is not being cared for properly. Maybe she is not being "abused" but making her live this way is abuse. Please send her to an elephant sanctuary where she can live out her remaining years in comfort and peace. I have read an anrticle on PETA`s page about your treatment of animals - elephants. They are starving, and look very sick. You should be ashamed, you have no heart. | Comments: | I got to meet mark and his family. My son worked for him as one of the riders and side by side with mark. I had the greatest time when I was in Miami watching my son and the karoly family working. He was in the video of the horse butt stunt mark did. I got to go the the farm in florida where some of the animals were kept. Being around them was a a memorable moment in my life. Not many people get to do the things I was allowed to do in florida. I miss that family................ |

Their Animal Trainers, beat, Poke, Prod, and scream at their animals until they are so frightened and hurt they do stupid circus tricks. Don't attend any Circuses put on by these people. They need to have their animals removed and are currently under investigation. Don't condone circus animal abuse by attending this circus. |

I've never seen circus elephants look so happy while working. The Knie (Swiss) Cirque got nothing on ya. Those animal right folks should catch your show, and take of their blinders.

| Comments: | Hi! I was doing a web search and stumbled across your site and boy did it bring back memories for me. I used to live in Ft. Lauderdale and would visit the Swap Shop on weekends and Thursdays where we would sell some stuff. (My now ex-husband, and my daughter who was just a baby at the time) I used to LOVE the show and had most of it memorized as I watched with wonder the tricks the elephants would do. I now live in the Tampa/St. Petersburg FL area and I miss not being able to see the show over and over again. George Hanneford III, YOU ROCK! I can still picture you ending the show with the handsprings and standing - arms raised - to applause. One day I'll try to get back just so I can see the show again. Is it true that one of your elephants was used in Smokey & the Bandit Part 2? If so, which one? It was that search that brought me to your site as I love (and have always loved) elephants. When I was little, I wanted one of my own! You are the luckiest man on the planet to have and be able to care for 3 of those beautiful animals. | Comments: | As a young child My Dad would bring me to the circus every year during the thanksgiving week when there were here in new orleans. At age 16 I wanted nothing more than to join the circus. with my moms blessings I contacted Tommy hanneford and less than a week later found myself in sunny sarasota florida working for the royal hanneford circus. Now at age 40 I continue to love the circus life and while I can not speek for all circus acts I can say that the hanneford animals are much loved and well cared for.
As a animal lover myself I would not see it any other way. As for life in the circus, the days are long, and the work is hard! but the rewards are great! | Comments: | I would like to respond to Saddened 14 year old from Florida his comment is below. First off cited 7 times in my opinion is good. Please tell me of one nursing home that has not been sited well over 50 times in florida and those are people or perhaps a resturaunt that has not passed health inspection it's first time. Or even a building that has not been sited by a fire marshall. Fire marshall's come every yer to inspect the a building and seem to find something every year does that mean the one from the year before did not do his job or the fact that they are there to generate money and don't want to lose their job. Walk into any nursing home in florida and they will have atleast 15 lawsuits against them (this is common)
and thats a good nursing home. Saddened 14 I don't know what your parents do for a living but please ask them if their business gets inspected every year what were the violations, there are always violations or there would be no need for the inspector. So in my opinion 7 violations is very good. Name: Saddened 14 year old from Florida Comments: I read on a website that this specific circus has been cited 7 times - Hanneford Family Circus has failed to meet minimal federal standards for the care of animals used in exhibition as established in the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has cited Hanneford Family Circus several times for failure to provide proper food, veterinary care records, and secure enclosures. Now what exactly is up with this? dont you think animal abuse by using hooks and beating them to get them to perform tricks only stimulating to an obviously immature and ignorant mind is fun? It simply amazes me that you can continue with this! there are many circuses on this earth that do not use animals in their acts, and yet they maintain a well known reputation for being entertaining. It just seems that it is so quite humorous, that such ignorance is still around america. And it is such a riot to see that the ft. lauderdale swap shop could care less! this truly shows the type of "humanity" found in florida. Continue your acts, but know inside of your hearts what you are doing is wrong, and you could easily let the poor creatures you force into tricks be free. have a good day, and even though the most likely outcome of this is that you will simply brush it off, as i am sure you do many other things, god bless. |
