My father had searched for years of the burial site of his grandmother who died four months after giving birth to his father. My father knew she had died in Bastrop, but didn't know that in later years that area became Travis County. I accidently learned of that and then found her grave in 2010. She has a tall headstone (which the family always said) with Mrs. A.J. Jones on it. However there were many Gentry's buried in the same plot. I was happy to find your website, but disappointed to not see her headstone. But, of course, I took many pictures. But thank you for leaving the site up.

Thanks for sharing your site with the world. The Caldwell family has lived in Garfield since the 1830s. My great, great grandfather Rev. James Alfred Caldwell, was a Methodist Minister and circuit rider. He was the first pastor at Haynie Chapel UMC. The original Haynie Chapel Church was built closer to the river, but moved to higher ground due to flooding. Although Austin is gobbling up farmland all around Garfield, I still feel like I can go back in time to my childhood memories at Haynie Chapel. Church services, the Cokesbury Hymnal, revivals, ice cream socials, funerals, weddings, girl scouts and 4H meetings all happened just across the road. Haynie Chapel was a central hub for gatherings. What wonderful memories! I hope to be buried by my family there some day. Thanks for keeping this website up.

The two Boatright graves mentioned with confederate markers did fight in the confederate army. However, they did not die in the war. James B Boatright is my 2nd great-grandfather. As this is a family cemetery, there are many Boatrights as well as their descendants, cousins, and other relatives. I am in the process of applying for a Memorial Medallion for James as he was here during the Republic of Texas. Charles was as well, and I will apply for his as soon as I get his war records in. I have the census showing that he and James are brothers. James was born about 1839 and Charles 1843.

I have visited this cemetary several times in person and now appreciate your effort to allow me to remember my family's heritage through this virtual album. I remember my family first visit here with my grandmother while I was young and later took my children with my mother. My grandmother was originally a Johnson and her parents (mother- E.J.(Elizabeth Jane)Johnson in your older graves section and father- Joseph "Joe" Johnson), her grandparents, and her great-grandparents along with baby brother, Kenneth Johnson (Elizabeth and Joseph's son whose gravesite is seen in your infants and children section)and a sister, Pauline. My grandmother told us Kenneth died from burns due to pulling a pot off the stove. Joseph Johnson's mother was a Caldwell who married a Johnson from Ireland, thus bringing the two families together. Elizabeth's mother(a Paige)is buried just outside of the Johnson's fenced area. Thus the presence of the Paige's in the cemetary. A funny story about the Reverend Caldwell's family is when the Reverend died Mrs. Caldwell would put milk on the porch when she knew the Indians were coming in hopes of protecting her home and family. One night she was not aware of their arrival and did not put out milk so they crawled down the chimney and drank the milk inside and left without harming the family. These gravesites and the adjacent church represent a beautiful legacy of faith, family and strength. I saw on my grandmother's face how important this heritage was to her and her strong desire to pass this down to her family. Thank you so much for your time and effort to record this so beautifully through your website.

I came across this site while searching for some information on my great-grandparents. You have a photo of a Childress grave on the site showing an older grave, James, and a recent burial, Irene. They were my grandparents and I wanted to fill in the gap for the missing date you had: She died January 27, 2000. I realize the point of the photo is to show the recent burial but I thought I'd shoot you an acutal date. I also wanted to ask if that photo is available and if so, request a copy? I can be reached at the e-mail address provided.

Your site is lovely - the photos and captions really convey the beauty of the cemetery - your care and love in creating this site is evident. My mother is a direct line Haynie and I have been trying unsuccessfully for several years to buy a burial plot for her at the Haynie Cemetery. They say since she does not currently live in Garfield Texas she is not eligible for burial there. Our Haynie limb is Rev. John Haynie's son Spencer Fletcher Haynie. My uncle and her brother, the Rev. Walter Booth Haynie, was accidentally allowed to purchase several plots for his own family a few years back but once they realized he did not live in the area, they made sure that others were unable to do the same (I tried to purchase a plot for my mother who lives at a nursing home in Smithville, Texas). If you have any suggestions or know of a way that we could buy a plot for her, please let me know. Thank you. Sincerely, her daughter and also a direct line Haynie, Lynn Reinhardt (281 447 3756)

I found your pictures very interesting and beautiful. I wish that we could stop the 'perpetual care industry' from taking over all of our cemeteries so that we would continue to have these types of cemeteries available for everyone to enjoy. Perpetual care in most cases is extremely impersonal and most are poorly cared for. Keep taking these inspiring pictures for everyone to enjoy. Thank you for you efforts.

Thank you for putting up such a nice stie. Have you seen any Stevensons buried there? I am looking for James Miles Stevenson (may be Jim or J M) born in 1836. Also possibly a Martha A Stevenson born in 1842-43 died after 1920. I'm pretty sure Jim would have been buried in Del Valle or somewhere nearby. Or are there any other cemeteries in that area?

You know, when I searched an old friends name. I really never thought anything would come up. But to my surprise, his name was right there on your web site. I was a good friend to Ricky Joe Carnline. We were actually childhood sweethearts. We met when he was 10 and I was 8. We were very close from that point on. He was a wonderful, caring, loving person. And he so enjoyed life. He has been on my mind a lot lately. So, I thought just maybe I might be able to pull up something that may help me find his family. We have lost touch since Ricky's death. And I would love to be able to sit and talk with them. If you might have any information on how I might be able to contact them, I would greatly appreciate it. Though I am sure you don't seeing that you don't know how he died. I just thought it's worth a shot. FYI....Ricky did die in a car accident. It was an aweful thing. He and his roommate were racing to see who could get to thier apt. first. Wee, they went different directions, and unfortunatly met up at an intersection. You can figure out the rest from there. I can't bring myself to say anymore about it. Thank you for any info. you might be able to share with me. Misty---

What a wonderful memorial. I was searching my husband's name, Brian Bertram, when your site came up. I was really pleased to see the cross. One of his brother-in-laws made that, one of his sisters and his mother and her boyfriend decorated it. The young girl in the picture with him was one of his sisters, the older lady his mom. The sides were also decorated with photos of other family members and one of our son, who was born 10 days before Brian died. He died as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident. The cross was starting to fall apart so we have replaced it with a headstone. It has an angraved eagle taking flight from a cross. The beer cans were left by one of his brothers. The flag once decorated his room. One of his sisters left the pompom. He had three sisters and two brothers. Thank you for leaving this up. It may be the only reminder of the cross. I do not know who took it down or where it is now. Erin Bertram

I have photgraphed several different cemetaries. Two here in Texas where i live, and two in Pensylvania. A few people criticized my work as morbid, but many other people found it beautiful. I prefer to work in black and white. It's strange to stop and think how different life was many years ago, and sometimes i wonder if these people have families that know the grave exist. The oldest graves i have seen were those of men who died in the american revolution.

I thought your photo essay was very nice. I thought I'd turn you on to a some more cemetaries. I was down to Gru ene one summer and happened across a very nice cemetary. It was near the Rockin'R tube and raft rental(all the more reason to go). It had a quaint little chapel on the premesis. There is a grave I remember covered with shells. It is ancient. Now then, if you'd like some culture with your grave hunting, come to Fort Worth. We have some very nice cemetaries here. They come in many different tastes and sizes. We also have them for all wallet sizes. Seriously now, Oakwood Cemetary on Grand Ave. is one of the oldest. It over looks a bluff of the Trinity River. There are cavalrey soldiers buried there. But if you are intrested REAL history, check out Pioneer Rest on Samuels Blvd. It has alot of city founders. Maj. Ripley Arnold is buried in the back down the main road on the right.OOps! didn't mean to turn your sociology assignment into a history lesson. If you like sheer beauty and money in your cemetary check Greenwood @University and White Settlement. It would be the Needless Markups of the cemetary world. There is also Skyvue being the Wally World. Didn't mean to blur your vision. Hope you enjoy my e-messege as much as I enjoyed your photo-essay.-----melli

Hi, I found your site well organised and planned, but I have only one suggestion: The sides of the web page should be symmetrical, I think. It is quite unusual to see a merging from a rose ornament into the black colour (which looks good!) from the left, and a rather rough cut in the ornament from the right. My opinion is that it would look more smooth and "in piece" if both sides were symmetrical. You can use Adobe PhotoShop to do it. Good luck in your studies.

I think it is pretty interesting to have a site where people can visit and learn about the history of some people, and if needed liks to other web sites that can help people obtain information needed. Thank you.

I thought your website was very detailed and well thought- out. Although I have never visited this cemetery in person, I feel like I have been there now.
