Good luck in your efforts.

Comments:I was north of the border last week and met Linda Neil at Coatbridge, now I am looking at your website with amazement. I am descended from
Mary Marshall,b abt 1817 Linlithgow, daughter of
Alexander Marshall and Christian Scott.
Married 1838 in Shotts to George Smith,
their son Alexander Smith married Margaret Buchanan 1864 at Baillieston and their daughter
Mary Marshall Smith married my Grandad James Elias Kerr 1901 in Paisley. Its a small world. I have pedigree of Christian Scott, but still a bit uncertain if I have right ancestors of Alexander Marshall. There are Marshalls still farming in the area. A Marshall was given a land grant at Kirk O Shotts just after the reformation.

Comments:Great site, incredible amount of work you must have put into all the research, tremendous job! Long shot but, my wife's mother is a McCloskey of Philadelphia, Pa, staunch Presebyterian background, 'Daughter of the Revolution" as it is termed there, her ancestors documented resident in 1776. I thought there might be some connection given your surname, do you have any related antecedents who migrated to Pennsylvania in the 18thC? It is common in the US for many Gaelic names to have been rendered in English, so MacBhloscaidh/McClosky may have been McAskie at some point, plus I notice you have some relations who ended up in that part of the world. Either way, I enjoyed your site, you have a fascinating and well documented family connection to Castlederg. More power to yez,as they would say in my native Dublin and may you and your kind prosper and be happy from there forever.. thats from a man reared on family tales of Uncles in the flying columns. Men who fought with Tom Barry at Kilmichael & Crossbarry, and Oul' Granny Burke who would brandish a dusty Webley at us when we were bold, that, it was told me as a child, she and her brother (my Great Uncle Seamus) took by hurley from a Captain of the Kings Own Yorkshire Light in Westport, Co. Mayo in September, 1921. I am also a man who grew up with the brute horror of Ulster in the 1970's and 80's, that return to the 1600s. It saddens me to hear the echo of the 400 year hate still resonate in the Great Province.

Comments:It is believed our Lowther Family is related to the Hoods.Thomas Lowther and Jane Johnston had a son Walter Johnston Lowther. Walter was born 1828. He is said to have been raised by an aunt on the family farm, Drumnobuoy. The farm ws granted to the family by the Prince of Orange and was on the estates of the Duke of Abercorn. Walter is also to have had a neice, Jane Hood and he named one of his children Mary Hood Lowther. Do you know of a connection. One of his daughters wrote that she can remember playing with a sword belonging to Captain Hood, maybe James Hood. We think that the Hood's settled on land in Northern Ireland at Drumnoboy - Strabane, Tyrone Ulster. Maybe coming form Winchester.

Comments:Hello my name is Greg Caldwell, I am trying to search my Caldwell lineage and am at a roadblock. My grgrandfather was Zachary Taylor Caldwell b. 1849 in Chulafinnee AL. His mother’s maiden name was Margaret Louisa Striplin. She was married to William Franklin Caldwell b. 15 Aug. 1822 in S. Carolina. This is all the information I have on him:
Resided in Fish Head Valley, in the vicinity of Chulafinnee, AL. "W.F. Caldwell was about twenty-five years of age then, and had the confidence and endorsement of his people." According to the slave schedule, he owned one mulatto male. A soldier (presumably Rebel, although one source believed him to be a Union sumpathizer!). W.F. is believed to have died of pneumonia in Tennessee during the Civil War. Regardless of the direct cause, Margaret Louisa Caldwell was left a widow on the twenty-third day of December in 1863, at thiry-five years of age.
That is as far back as I go on the Caldwell line, any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thank you,
Greg Caldwell

Alan McCaskie lives just outside Castlederg and his family were originally from the Whitehouse area in the Parish of Ardstraw. By the way Ardstraw is one of the Largest parishes in County Tyrone.I am presently Researching the Harpur/Orr families from this area. Jane Orr was born in !833, the Daughter of John Orr and Mary Watson from Priestsessagh. There was a James Orr that was a witness at her wedding in 1853 at Drumclamp Church or Ireland at Crew Bridge, in the parish of Ardstraw. This was possibly a brother of Janes. My grandfather, Joshua McCaskie, came to Chicago at age 3 (about 1889) from the Glascow(sp?),Scotland area. He was one of 11 children and had platinum blond hair and blue eyes. The other 10 children all had red hair. We attended a big McCaskie family reunion about July 1966, which was held in Francistown, New Hampshire, USA, at the summer home of my great-uncle Bob (McCaskie or possibly Caskey) and his wife, Emily. I grew up in Illinois (Chicago area) but now live in Glendale, Arizona. My husband is also of Scottish descent and my mother-in-law's maiden name is Gordon.

Comments:Am new to this genealogy game! However, I have read some of the McCaskie family tree[s] and can easily relate to quite a few names thereon - my grandfather was 'RJ'Smith of Ballyduff House, Lifford, Co. Donegal - which incidentally he did not build. It was, I believe, built by Sir Edward Burgoyne and is mentioned in a Penguin book 'Houses of North-West Ulster'- unsure of the exact title. I will peruse the family histories with which I am familiar and add to - or delete from - as appropriate. What a fascinating lot we are! My father was Robert Smith and after graduation from Trinity College, Dublin he took over the farm at Ballybogan from his maternal uncles John and James Caldwell, both of whom were bachelors.

He was married to Maraget BAIRD, also of Co Tyrone.

Their known children were:

John, bc 1825
Agnes, bc 1833
Margaret, bc 1834

John married Sarah Ann STARKEY in 1860 in Co Derry

John & Spouse, Margaret & Spouse, & Jane migrated to Australia at various times between 1840 & 1860

There are few, apart from my immediate relatives, with this particular McCaskey spelling left in Northern Ireland. My father was Sydney son of John or James originating from Castlereagh in Belfast.

Comments:Visited your site in April. Still excellent. 1901 UK census has my great-grandfather, John Kelly DORAGH, and his wife, Ada, living at 20 Olney Street Liverpool 4. John DORAGH was born at Erganagh in 1872, one of 8 children. The children were all born either at Dunrain (now spelt Dunrevan) or Erganagh.

They had 2 boarders, John K CALDWELL 24 Grocer's Manager and Robert W CALDWELL 19 Grocer's Assistant. They were listed as born in Ireland.

Is it possible that John Kelly arranged to look after them in Liverpool because he knew the family in Erganagh?

John Kelly's older brother Thomas, b1872, owned a grocer's shop in Liverpool city centre. At the moment I am trying to check a possibility that John Kelly also owned a shop by 1901. Perhaps the Caldwell brothers worked at one of the shops.

I hope this may be of some help to the Caldwell branch.

How exciting to see our Queensland Donaldson Page up and running. Hope together we can fill in the gaps and eventually produce a page as interesting and informative as the rest of your marvellous Web-site.

Many thanks for all the hard work and long hours you've so cheerfully put in assisting me to find my GGGrandparents George Donaldson and Anne McBrien. Reading of Anne's Garden was a dream. Can't wait to re-visit Donegal.

All the best, Judy

Comments:My father-in-law, David Craig, came from Ardstraw. The Craig family may have been one of the 16 who came over from Scotland to settle the Castlederg area. David Craig snr and his son James Craig are listed as seatholders at Castlederg 1st Presbyterian Church in the late 1870s. This David married Mary Leitch, and is the ancestor of "my" David. One of his sons was called Christopher, and there is another Christopher in the previous generation, born in Ardstraw in 1830, son of James Craig and Nancy. This James Craig is the earliest known ancestor. Can you shed any more light? - Many thanks for your excellent and informative website.

My grandfather in the very early 1900's researched a very thorough geneology of the Brown's, the Gailey's (not sure of spelling) also of Creevy and the all the associated branches of the family tree. The story you have in your site of John Brown who was lost at sea sailing for America and his wife who eventually returned, was my great aunt Peggy Brown (formerly Gailey). I know the details of that story as it was passed down to my father.

Comments:Heather, this is a wonderful site! I can tell you have done a lot of research! It caught my eye because my mother is the cousin mentioned in the obituary for George Noble Coey. As a matter of fact, I have a box of pictures and a bible with many of the Coey/McAskie/Noble names recorded in it kept by George's mother, Lolita Johnston Coey. In looking at these pictures, I get excited to put names to them. I think I can't help fill in some blanks for you and you can help by giving me such information on my mother's history. I look forward to a long and rewarding relationship. Thank you for coming into my life.

Thanks very much for the directions to Whitehouse. I should be able to locate it easily, since the B50 road between
Castlederg and Drumlegagh(Drumquin) is only a few miles long.
My mother's Whitehouse-Ardstraw Parish ancestors Robert Baird and Phebe Galbraith Baird and their young son, Joseph
emigrated to Maryland, USA in 1822. Documents show quite
a few Galbraiths from Whitehouse in the early 19th
century. Unfortunately, there are no records of any
subsequent contact by our family with relatives, if any, who might have stayed behind. Take care, Andy
