rachel fretz Friday, February 11th 2005 - 02:36:30 AM rfretz@hotmail.com Sometimes when I watch your shows I feel like a little bony cat who needs to crawl up on stage and spill her guts. But by the time I get there, your drummer has already saved me the trouble by spelling out, by virtue of his, well, startling virtuoso...everything I would've said; that I couldn’t say at the time. But I heard. I heard everything. And I'll remember that show. Come to San Francisco. I won't be so bony. I won't even have to crawl. I'll listen and I'll love it and I'll go home so much happier than when I walked in. Once again.

wayne Sunday, November 7th 2004 - 01:52:26 PM The web address is exactly right, Here Kitty Kitty ROCKS! They did it again last night at the teen center in Santa Cruz. Sputterdoll opened with a kick-ass set, Frooty flavors played, and then Here Kitty Kitty took the stage and rocked. They were fast and loud, and fast. And loud. Thank you, Here Kitty Kitty, it was great fun!

wayne Sunday, October 24th 2004 - 07:50:49 PM All Hail the Triumphant Return of Here Kitty Kitty!!! After several weeks on hiatus, Here Kitty Kitty returned to action last night at Chris’s Club in Vallejo. Playing an all girl (except for Dave and Dennis Ly from Sputterdoll) show to benefit breast cancer research, Here Kitty Kitty was second on the bill after Sputterdoll and were followed by Velvet Fury and The Tricks. Chris’s Club is a bar/pool hall/burger joint with a regular crowd that didn’t look very much like your typical punk gathering, but who embraced the evening’s event, including the pleasure party and sex toy raffle. Sputterdoll started the night off right on time with a twenty minute set that featured the vocals and bass styling of Rio Gache. Drummer Bernadette Cordova added punch and some lead vocals. Guitarists Dennis Ly and Lizzie were slightly obscured by the combination of Gache and Cordova, but overall the set was energetic, upbeat, and a good start to a great night. Here Kitty Kitty picked up where Sputterdoll left off and rocked the house, which included many people from as far away as Sacramento and San Jose as well as the locals, with a collection of favorites. The humor that is the hallmark of an HKK show actually bubbled over in the form of a joke told by Mikala—something about a boy, his babysitter, and some cider. At one point I think I heard Aricka start Wild Thing, which would be a good cover. Their introduction to Unfriend had the sisters pointing fingers at each other and saying it was about a really mean person. The set included Broken, Daddy’s Girl, Unfriend, Last to know, Destroy, Blitzkrieg Bop, Firecracker, Down on Me, Be my Baby, and Lucy Gray. It was well received and inspired dancing among fans, old and new. Velvet Fury was a trio of nurses, Nurse Ratchet/La Tigressa, Nurse Code Blue/La Tuka and Nurse Dahlia DeathStrike. Another band featuring a bassist/vocalist, though this time with a more balanced sound, Velvet Fury played a sexy set that showed its Latin roots in the Spanish lyrics of many songs, and the musings of nurse Ratchet about Argentinean boys. The final act of the night was The Tricks, from Vacaville. They were a tight; powerpop band whose set included covers of Madonna and the Ramones and who at times sounded like a hybrid of the two. Vocalist Jen holds the attention of the audience with her charismatic and full motion approach to singing. Jamey (guitar), Holly (bass), and Megan (drums), provide plenty of energy to round out the Tricks sound. It was good to see Here Kitty Kitty again, after some well deserved time off, and to hear the music. Once again a good time was had by all.

Milt Tuesday, August 31st 2004 - 02:35:11 PM vikingman10@juno.com Hello, was wondering when you guys might make it back to the bay area? The east bay to be exact, out in Concord? There are a few places that you could play at, like the Cadillac Ranch, Bourbon Street or even the Time Out. The first 2 places would be the best. I've been dying to see you since that gig in Berkeley on the Girl Powder Tour with Simon Stinger at Blake's. Missed most of you guys, but what I did catch I thought was amazing. So please come back to the east bay soon. Peace out.

I Was There Sunday, July 18th 2004 - 12:03:37 AM Johnny Vs is on Santa Clara Street about two blocks west of the SJSU campus. A late night hole in the wall grocery store is a couple doors west and the light rail goes past a half block east. Inside, Johnny Vs is a small bar with a tiny dance floor in the rear and an upstairs. The bar has about eight stools and there is seating for eight at two booths across from the bar. There are special little spots for a DJ and an ATM machine, past the dance floor is the staircase and further back are the restrooms. The staircase is narrow and takes a turn on the way up, upstairs is hot, and there are only a few people up there. When the place fills up with dancing people and red-hot amplifiers it will be burning up. At the top of the stairs is a booth to the right and past the booth is another room. Straight ahead is the bar (the upstairs is even smaller than the downstairs). To the left is the rest of the room, the “stage” is only detectable because the sound system is set up at that end of the room. There is no platform because the ceiling is only about seven and a half feet. To the left of the stage is the green room. I saw Mikala playing on a spinning chair in there while the Nixie Tubes were playing. The Huxtables were unable to play, so Captain Dano and the Nobodies were added and the Nixie Tubes and Here Kitty Kitty moved up in the line-up. There was a delay in getting the show started but they did put a couple industrial strength fans to work and the place cooled off quite a bit. The first band up was Captain Dano and the nobodies, the nobodies were really nobody, so it was only Dano. Dano covered some of the worst songs ever and one Eric Clapton song. He had a barstool and sang and played guitar. He sounded like a Rastafarian jukebox from the eighties. He was not unbearable but he did nothing to pick up the crowd. Well, not very much anyway, he did have some support in the crowd and they were vocal. The Nixie Tubes came on and the energy level went way up. I had seen these guys in the bar earlier, preparing for the show. They are a power trio, and they make a lot of noise. They played a hard rock set complete with guitar solos vaguely reminiscent of Jimmy Page. The vocals were handled mostly by the guitar player, but the bass player added quite a bit as well. They were an excellent band to set the stage for Here Kitty Kitty. And now that the stage was set, it was time for the band we had all been waiting for. Here Kitty Kitty set up quickly and got onstage. The crowd roared at the first strumming by Aricka of her guitar and from that point on the audience was almost as much a part of the show as the band. This is Broken started a set that also included blistering versions of Walk of Shame, Lucy Grey, Last to Know, Time and others. A highlight of the set was their rendition of Be My Baby, which is their contribution to the Bombs Over Santa Cruz compilation CD. They called Joe up to the stage to play guitar so Aricka could sing Happy Birthday to Kavon, and were called back for a rare encore. For the encore, they played Blitzkrieg Bop. The crowd was delighted, either because of or in spite of the somewhat unconventional efforts of a guest vocalist. The show was over way too soon. It always feels that way when the band and the fans get so close during a concert. It is never enough. Here Kitty Kitty is a guaranteed good time out, always having fun and spreading it out to their audience. The room cleared out and the people filtered through the upstairs and downstairs bars and out onto the street. For a minute, the atmosphere seemed a little cleaner and the whole world was a little better. Then reality returned. Well, at least the world was better for a little while.
