My father was Raymond E. Sumrell of New Bern, NC. He fought in WWII. Are there any veterans that fought along side him still alive. Is there anything they can tell me about my father back when he was so young. I only knew him as a great father.

I noticed you have a message from Raymond Sumrell, dated Jan. 2005. He passed away in July of 2004.

Well Done,

As he enlisted about the same time as your uncle and spent time in San Antonio and Seething I imagine his experiences were very similar to what your uncle described in his letters. Thanks for sharing!

Brown Welles, Earl's only child who never knew her father, and I will be eternally grateful to you. Earl was from Geneva, NY. He married my grandmother, Laura V. McLeod, who was from Florida. If there are any of his family members out there, or anyone who knew him, I would love to hear from them. We know so little about him and would so like to know more. God Bless these men and so many others who gave their lives for the country they loved.

Comments:First off, my most sincere respects to Lt. Buxton and all who served with him; we are fortunate that they fought and won that war.

This web site is a very nice tribute to your uncle and his crew. It is well done.

My dad is the only surviving member of a Navy Patrol Bomber crew that flew missions over China during WWII. They flew the "navalized" version of the B-24 bomber called the PB4Y-2 "Privateer".

Dad was a radar tech and would be assigned to fly with various crews, depending upon the anticipated mission needs. On May 1, 1945, dad was on other duties when his primary crew went on a mission and failed to return. They were listed as MIA until after the War.

Eventually, the wreckage of the bomber and the crew remains were located in Ling Shui district of Hainan Island, China. Each one of the crew were returned to the States for burial; I have located and visted each on of their graves.

We are so very indebted to these men.

Best regards,
Dave Deatherage

Comments:I did a search on "Curtis AT-9" and it eventually led me to this website. In letter four of "Transition Training" there is a picture of Alex Burhart. I was the copilot on Alex' crew. We did 30 missions in the 389th BG, 567th BS, stationed in Hethel, England, about 8 miles SSE from Norwich.

It has been a long time ago, but I believe that I remember the name Buxton. We went through RTU at Pueblo, CO, in June and July of 1944, and I believe that his crew might have been there at the same time.

Reading some of the letters brought back some memories of stories from my Dad and "Buxton" always just Buxton. I did not realize they were not together in England - only in training out West. Alex survived the war after flying 31 missions over Germany and just passed away last November.

I am often amazed at what they did at such a young age. They were brave and remarkable young men who changed the world.

Comments:Very nice tribute to a fine officer. I was a Bombardier on a B-24 and arrived in England just a couple of months before Jack, just in time to fly in the Invasion of Europe. We completed our missions and turned our aircraft over to another crew which was shot down after 2 or 3 missions. I am very sorry your Jack was lost; there were so many fine people who never came back. God bless them all.

My father was an Italian Navy Medical Officer in WW2, he survived to Taranto's bombing and after 8 sept. 1943 changed to Air Force Italy and fought against germans, saving the life of 2 american soldiers a newzealand officer and one juif, near Anzio, hiding them in a cellar hidden below an old house, taking the risk to be shooted by german SS.
Seriously wounded in action, left the service and retired in feb.1945

Comments:Hello Sue,
My name is Regan De Nio and I am also the granddaughter of 2nd Lieutenant John Lowell Burkhead and the youngest daughter of Johnnie Jean Burkhead Osborn. I cannot express to what a gift it was to view your website, a website that held answers to all of our questions; a whisper from the past. Thank-you. Even though I have never truly meet my grandpa, I know him. He has been alive to me and my sister our whole lives due to our Mom, a woman who never met him. She kept his memory alive through portraits on the walls, old letters from him to our Nannie (Felva) and talking to us about other peoples' memories of him. Collie (my sister) and I did not grow up with him, but in a strong sense we actually did--he was always there. So, I firmly believe this plan that did indeed carry "our percious cargo" has a legacy that will continue to live on and for that I know they are proud. For John Lowell his legacy lives on through his girls, Johnnie (daughter), Collie (granddaughter), Regan (granddaughter), Emma and Ava (great-granddaughters--Collie's girls). As for the third generation, Emma, Ava and the future great-grandchildren of John Lowell Burkhead, they will also grow- up with him and the brave heros who flew in the B-24 on August 16, 1944.

Comments:My uncle was a tech sargeant in WWII and was shot down over northern Italy, Bolzano-Bozen March 29, 1944. His name was Michael Kocherhan and unfortunately he was to be sent home as he had finished his last flight. However, he volunteered for duty on another flight because of a sick air crew member. He was only 19. I am putting together a site as this one in his memory.
